and click restore
the next pop up says

this stays on for anywhere from a few seconds to about a minute
then i get final pop up that says
itunes could not restore the ipone because backup session failed
i have tried to deleting the last backup and doing it again. I have deleted itunes and re downloaded and intstalled again and still get the same problems.
I am running Windows7 and the latest itunes 10.5.33 and firefox.
oh i have tried backing up to icloud and to my pc and get same errors on both
any help would be great thanks.

    Hi Alan Parrock,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. Based on what you stated, it sounds like you are not able to restore the iPhone. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help the issue.

  • HT1766 when i restore and back up i loose contacts

i lost my contacts , so restored and backed up, they come back but then i loose them again. !!!!!!

You're attempting to back up more data to iCloud than you have available.  iCloud has 5GB of free storage, and you can purchase more storage if you choose (+10GB = $20, + 20GB = $40, +50GB = $100, all prices for one year of availability).
Manage the amount of data that you are attempting to backup to iCloud using the Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > Manage Storage.

Let me start with the general advise...
When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.
    (1) Bypass Firefox's Cache
Use Ctrl+Shift+r to reload the page fresh from the server.
Alternately, you also can clear Firefox's cache completely using:
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced
On the Network mini-tab > Cached Web Content : "Clear Now"
If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes.
    (2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site, try either:
    * right-click and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
    * Alt+t (open the classic Tools menu) > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
In the dialog that opens, you can remove the site's cookies individually.
Then try reloading the page. Does that help?

  • I'm trying to restore and back up my iPhone 4 it's taking more than 45 hours. What should I do?

I have been trying to restore and back up my Iphone which i have just updated and I wanted my apps, contacts, messages, etc,. all back on my iPhone but its taking more than 45 hours and it's only 16 GB. I have really important contacts that I need to have in my phone but it would take weeks to get them back one by one without using the back up.

As has been said, you may have a corrupt backup on your computer. However, if it is a Windows computer you may also have a corrupt socket layer in Windows. So first try this (after canceling the backup):
Open a command window with Administrator privileges and type:
       netsh  winsock  reset
then reboot your computer and try again to do a backup (right click on the phone's name in iTunes and select Backup from the floating menu).
If this doesn't work you will have to delete the existing backup. Go to iTunes preferences, Devices page.
Note: If you have a Mac first try restarting it, launching iTunes, and back up as described above.

  • Restoring and backing up.

I just got a new iPhone 5sand have had it almost a week, but it won't restore or back up. I have it plugged in, locked and connected to wifi every night and it has not done either a back up or a restoration. I have pretty much everything from my old iPhone but my music won't download all of my music. What can I do to make sure I get backed up and restored?

        Hi Adele1
I'm sorry to hear your having difficulties backing the device up. How are you attempting to back it up? iTunes, iCloud, or Verizon Cloud. Please turn off Wifi and try this:http://vz.to/HDyBiC

  • Restoring and backing up again to Time Machine

    Hi Apple Community,
I recently had to replace the hard drive on my iMac. After the repair, I connected my Mac to my Time Capsule backup and did a complete resotre of my hard drive (approximatley 500 GB). The whole process took about 8 hours but when I was done I had successfully transfered over all my files, applications, preferences, and settings and was satisfied. However, when I attempted tp perform my next Time Machine backup, my computer began a new initial backup of my entire 500 GB of data. I couldn't understand why I would need to do a complete, fresh backup when I had just finished a complete restore. I called Apple and spoke to a Time Machine/Time Capsule Specialist who agreed that my computer was acting strangely and transferred me to an Apple Senior Advisor who would "have access to better tools for resolving my issue." The Senior Advisor told me that my Time Machine was actually behaving properly since backups are associated with unique hard drive adresses not content/settings, so a new hard drive will always require a new full backup. I was extremely frustrated with this response and felt like I recieved the infamous "it's not a bug; it's a feature" excuse.
Does anyone know if the Senior Advisor is correct? If so, it seams like a major flaw with the Time Machine software and means I have to spend another 8 hours backing up my system. Additionaly, the Advisor mentioned that the new backup will create a new sparsbundle file (though I can't currently see it since the backup is still in progress) meaning I will have to delete my legacy backups to save space. If the Advisor was wrong does anyone know of a workaround?
I've actually done several Time Machine Restores before including from an old MacBook Pro to a new one which would cause a similar situation. I can't remember ever having to do a complete fresh backup, but I may have simply forgotten. What I can't understand (but forgot to mention to the Apple Advisor) is that my Time Machine System Preferences show the previous dates for the "Oldest" and "Latest" backups. If Time Machine were truly tied to my hard drive why would System Preferences believe my iMac had already backed up?
Thanks in advance for any help or assitance,
    Jonathan

That's correct, but incomplete.  The full restore (and Setup Assistant and Migration Assistant) were changed effective with Snow Leopard to leave a "trail" in the SystemMigration.log so Time Machine could figure out what happened, and "associate" the new drive with the old backups, and only do an incremental backup.
That often didn't work in Snow Leopard, unfortunately, and was improved in Lion, where it seems to work much more often, but (obviously) not always.
Also effective with Lion is a new UNIX command that allows you to do this manually, but unfortunately it doesn't work if your backups are on a network, for some reason.

It's not your Mac, but your internal HD that appears to be new.  If you restart the backup, once it finishes, you'll still have the old backups, but as if they were on a HD that's no longer connected to your Mac.  You'll need the procedure in #E3 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting to see or restore from them.

  • How can I get Back all of my data after restoring and back up ? I lost my data and I did back up

when I did restore and update .. I lost all of my data , then I pressed to back up buttom , when I try to restore data , its disapper . is there anyway to get back all data lost ?

If you are backing up to your computer, check iTunes/Edit/Preferences/Devices, if there are nay other backups listed.
Since each backup replaces the old one if not used to restore from, your data might be lost since you seem to have backed up a phone without any personal data.
Check this article about how to restore from backups:

In that order? Backup should come first, then restore.

  • Restoring and backing up an external hard drive

I have had a WD My Book external for a few years and it has been working great up until yesterday. This is what is showing up.
As I am typing this it is no longer grayed out, I am in the process of copying and pasting to the new 3TB External. This is freaking me out... For future reference what do I do in the restore tab if anyone can help.

Your iPhone's backup, which is created and maintained by iTunes stores data such as most iPhone settings, email account settings, contact info, SMS messages, notes, recent calls, call favorites, photos available in your iPhone's camera roll (you shouldn't depend on your iPhone's backup alone for these photos, which should be imported by your computer as with any other digital camera), and 3rd party app settings and data created and stored by a 3rd party app.
It isn't necessary to backup your iPhone's backup. You can manually update your iPhone's backup at any time without syncing, and the same when connecting your iPhone with iTunes on another computer. With your iPhone connected to iTunes and without syncing, control-click on your iPhone and at the menu window that appears, select Back Up.
Maintaining a backup of your iTunes library is much more important - copying the entire iTunes named folder to an external drive or some other external media used for backup purposes.
Since the iPhone is designed to be synced with a supported application on your computer for contact info and calendar events, you should maintain a backup of the supported application on your computer for this data. Photos transferred from your computer to your iPhone are not included with your iPhone's backup, so these photos should be included with your computer's backup along with all other important data.
When syncing an iPhone with iTunes on another computer, only iTunes content on the iPhone will be erased first, not all data on your iPhone such as contact info and calendar events. When selecting photos to be transferred to your iPhone from another computer, all photos available on your iPhone that were transferred from another computer will be erased first. If you don't select to sync contact info and calendar events with a supported application on another computer, contact info and calendar events on your iPhone will not be touched.

  • Restoring and backing up my 2nd hand computer

I own a macbook pro....i bought it from my uncle who previously owned it. I want to back up all my files and restore it to original factory settings. how do i save all my data and a few of my programs? It is running slow, and i know there is too much on the memory from the previous owner, i never reset it when i got it and want to do so now. but i do not want to lose all my programs like CS5 and all my documents and photos. How do i do this?

Firstly, get yourself an external drive. Or two of them. Then copy all your files off to them both. Copy them. Dont use any program to do the 'backup'. Take everything off the machine that you dont wish to ever lose.
Secondly, do get the original system software that the MBPro came with. If the original MBP came with CDs then you should have them ready. Including their serial numbers.
Thirdly, note what all application software you want to use or keep versus those you dont need or want. Get their respective serial numbers. Identify their website sites and how to get a legal copy registered if anything were to happen (like a hard disk failure). If your uncle has bought any specific software, do remember that it will probably be registered in his name. If you have bought any software that you have added to the machine after getting it from your uncle, you should have these ready too, their serial numbers, relevant email ids, etc.
Once that is done, take a Time Machine backup. Of everything.
To get it back to its original factory settings may be complicated depending upon what the original OS version was. And what has been updated along the way. Do let us know what system was originally used when the machine was bought, and what you are OS version you are now using.

Tip - You may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily.  Then download and install the iOS update. After you update to iOS 5.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).

  • Disk utility Restore and Back up

when using Disk utility and dragging my source internal HD to the source window and then dragging my external HD to the destination window then clicking on restore.
After this completes can I then boot from the external HD? I have been using DeJuVu with no problems on a lacie ext HD. i just purchased an OWC Mercury elite and did a DeJuVu back up, but the OWC wont boot.
It mounts and shows up on the restart in sytem preferences. I contacted OWC and they recommended doing another back up. They also told me i could do the restore from disk utilities and would be able to boot from the ext.
I am now doing a restore on the imac but still wondering if this will work, if so I could do my cloning of the HD with out using DeJuVu. the only thing I would lose is the ability to do scheduling.
    Thank You
    Dick

I never had any problem backing up a clone using DeJuVu. I always backed up to external sata HD's and a Lacie firewire ext. Also when I used CCC this time it worked fine.
When I bought the OWC Mercury Elite is when I had a problem. After spending a day with there tech dept with no success. I came to the conclusion that only one HD could be booted from there ext 2 drive enclosure. I contacted the the next morning and talked to there senior tech and he confirmed that the enclosure when split using two drives independently that only one was bootable.
I am not sure why you can't get a complete bootable clone. What are the drives and what are you trying to clone to. Ext, internal or your single drive which you have partitioned?
I feel if your cloning you should always do it on a separate drive.
My methods are I never partition and never fill my operating system over half of the drive capacity.
    Dcik
