Trouble Restoring to Vista Factory Default

I have had a Thinkpad T61 (6460-66U) for just under a year now. When I first got it, it was pre-loaded with Vista and came with XP Pro recovery CDs. Since it only had 1G of RAM in it, I opted to burn out a Vista Recovery DVD with the ThinkVantage tools and reinstall to XP. Recently I upgraded the laptop to 4G of RAM and would like to give Vista another try now.
Unfortunately, the Vista Recovery DVD I made does not seem to be working. It boots to the Rescue and Recovery 4 screen, where I click on Restore your System->Restore My hard drive to the original factory state->I do not want to save any files.
I then chose to start the process, get the warning about not powering down during the recovery. I clicked on Okay, and a few seconds later I get a requester asking to reboot to complete the installation, with no work done. When the machine reboots, it returns to the already installed XP and makes no attempt to install Vista.
My XP restore disk does work, at the point where the Vista recovery process did nothing, formating the hard drive and copying files over for the fresh install before askling to reboot, at which point XP installs fine.
Any idea what's happening here, and what solutions are available?

How many discs did you burn? A self made set of recovery discs for a T61 with Vista should be a total of 3 discs, 1x boot cd and 2x recovery dvd. Maybe you only created the rescue disc?? More information can be found here

Error message: itunes-restore phone to factory default on iphone 3 "we're sorry, we are unable to continue with your activation at this time".

Attempting to restore Iphone 3 to factory deafalut, to finish "unlocking" the Iphone 5.
Moving the phone from one cellular carrier to another (in this case Rogers to Bell in Canada).
Rogers "unlocked" the phone on their end for $50.00, sent an email to Apple requesting serial # to be released from their network, and to provide "unlocked" status.
Next step was to restore phone to "factory default" in I tunes, and wait for phone to reset and show "unlocked" status.
Upon phone resetting in Itunes, after the "factory default", received the following error message"
"we are sorry, we are unable to unable to continue with activation at this time Please try again, or contact customer service".
I contacted Apple customer service whom confirmed that the phone is showing as "unlocked" in their system.
New carrier that I am attempting to hook phone up states that the phone is still locked.
What is the solution or workaround?

Resolution
Perform the following steps if you receive one of the messages above:
Restart the iPhone.
Try another means of reaching the activation server and attempt to activate.
Try connecting to Wi-Fi if you're unable to activate using a cellular data connection.
Try connecting to iTunes if you're unable to activate using Wi-Fi.
Restore the iPhone.
If you receive an alert message when you attempt to activate your iPhone, try to place the iPhone in recovery mode and perform a restore. If you're still unable to complete the setup assistant due to an activation error, contact Applefor assistance.

How to restore back to factory defaults?

I need to restore the laptop back to factory defaults which is Windows Vista but all I have is the disk that came with the laptop which says product recovery for windows xp.
The system backup is turned off and system restore has not solved the problem.
Can anyone tell me how to get it back to factory defaults with vista?

Can you please tell us which notebook model you have exactly? I presume the Vista recovery image is saved on HDD. Usually it is saved on second partition in HDDRecovery folder.

How can the artist view pictures in music be updated in IOS 7? My device (Ipod Touch 5th) used to have the artist pictures but when I restored it from factory default, it only used the pictures from the album.

Please help. I have updated to the IOS 7 and there was a cool feature in the Music app wherein when you view an album artist, i think apple updates the picture of that artist from their gallery. But when I decided to restore to factory defaults, it never came back and only uses the picture from the albums.

I have the same problem. After a full restore my iphone 5 does not display the artist photos, but it does show the correct album covers once i go into that group. Instead i get a grey box with diagonal writing saying the band name but no picture.

Pages, Keynote and Number apps missing from OS X Yosemite after restoring it to factory defaults

Recently my macbook pro OS X Yosemite experienced some problems, so I decided to reset it to factory defaults. Now, everything works well, except for the fact that built in apps Pages, Keynote and Numbers are missing: what can I do? The App Store says I need to pay for them again, but I clearly remember (and checked again on the apple website) that the apps were built-in and not purchased. Is there anyway I can get them back without paying for them, since I clearly already have?

Trouble restoring compaq to factory settings.. please help

I had a virus.. Hp sent cds.. They loaded fine( did it yesterday at about 4pm est) when it came to software loading it was stuck ont the page where it says don't turn of pc.. Yor pc restarts.. And messages may pop up... Says please wait with three green squares moving from left to right... After more than thirteen hours ( and on the advice of an hp agent) I redid the whole process again... Its been about five hours... Still going ... Any idea if this is " normal" any way to bypass this part etc.... An hp agent said he knew someone that took 48 hours to do a full factory restore... Does anyone know how long it should take?? Btw pc is about two months out of warranty so they won't help.. They did ask me to push F9 repeated to check hardware and it all passed.. I am frustrated and about to cry... Please help

If you haven't been able to connect to the iTunes Store:

Playbook is missing time zones after restoring it to factory defaults

Hello,
I recently factory restored my playbook to OS version 1.0.8.6067. After the restore I've found that Canada is missing from the list of countries available under Language tab (current Language set to English). Also, pacific time sone is missing from the Time Zone section under Date & Time.
The following countries are available if the Current Language is set to English
Trinidad & Tobago
US Minor Outlying Island
US Virgin Islands
UK
US
And under the Time zone list only the following are available
Eastern TIme (-5)
Indiana (-5)
Bogota (-5)
Mexico City - Old (-6)
Mexico City - New (-6)
I've restored the device twice with the same restuls as above. Any idea what might ve going on?

I have recently encountered this problem myself. To give a little background, my Playbook was on 2.0 beta and when I recently updated to the full 2.0 I was having some consistency rpoblems with some apps so I did a full secruity wipe. When my playbook came back up it only a few timezones and none of them were anywhere close to where I live. This made no sense at all.
After that I did another secruity wipe, which still did not solve the problem. Then I did a full reinstall using the debrick method using the Blackberry Desktop Software. Again, when the Playbook came back up, it still was missing the proper timezones.
I'm at my wit's end here, and my research has shown that this issue has come up before and I've never seen anyone come up with a conclusive answer on how to fix it. If anyone knows anything at all about this please share as this has rendered my Playbook useless. Manually setting the time is not acceptable because the timzeone will be wrong so any timestamps will be completely off when viewed on other machines or if I sync a calendar then appointments show up at the wrong time.
I am very frustrated but I hope there is an answer here somewhere!

Is it possible to backup and restore a U300s to factory defaults?

I've decided to purchase a U300s. Since it doesn't have an optical drive, and therefore does not come with any installation media, I'm a bit confused how I might backup the disk so I can later restore it to factory defaults.
Is there a way to copy the contents of the internal SSD to a USB drive in such a way to allow booting off the USB drive? Is there any way to restore the SSD back to the exact state it was in when it left the factory?
A little more detail...
I plan on installing Linux on the U300s and have no desire to dual boot Windows. Therefore I will be reformatting and using the entire drive for Linux. However, there are some very rare times when I might need to boot into Windows (e.g. installing BIOS updates). Preferably I'd like to have a USB drive collecting dust somewhere that I could boot off of in these rare situations.
I'm wondering if something like this would work:
Boot a new U300s off a live Linux USB flash drive
Use dd to clone the SSD to a portable USB drive
Install Linux
Boot into Windows from the cloned USB drive as needed
Would something like that work? I'd prefer to do this all from Linux because I have very limited experience with Windows (I can barely do anything) but have been using Linux for 15+ years.

Using the onekey boot recovery software in windows there is an option to backup a factory image of the U300s drive to an external DVD. It's fiddly, but you can use a Virtual DVD burner to accomplish this. I found a free one and set the backup drive size to 8GB or something, then ran the backup telling the onekey recovery to backup to the external virtual drive.
Have a look on this and previous forum pages for some info on how todo this.
Worked a charm
Only problem now I suppose would be recovering from that backup, considering it is far too big to be burnt onto a single DVD. Some combo of virtual drives again and maybe an external USB drive.
Let us know how the Linux install goes.

Can not restore to factory defaults with cd

I am working on a Satellite A215-S7416 that had a unrecoverable virus problem. Trying to restore back to factory defaults with the 2 restore cd's and I get an error: 0A-0224-0000, Cannot copy files. Is my HDD bad? If it is, how do I get warranty service taken care of?

Here is the exact error from the Toshiba Recovery Error:
An error has occurred.
ERROR: 0A-0224-0000
File copy failed'
Please check (OK) to turn off the computer.
The restore cd's had not been opened up prior to doing this restore. Is there a way to get a copy of these cd's? Thanks.

Preventing users from restoring to factory defaults

Just wondering if it is possible. Right now any standard user with a legitimate password is capable of pressing F8 when loading windows, enter repair and restore computer to factory defaults. Is there any way to prevent ordinary users from doing so?

There isn't really an official way to prevent a full system recovery from being performed. By resetting the system to factory default, I take it you are referring to the F11 system recovery provided by HP which would return it to an out of the box condition.
Since this process takes place outside of Windows, setting permissions or making changes inside windows itself will not prevent this. However, you could make sure you have working recovery disks for the unit and then delete the recovery partition. Removing the recovery partition would eliminate the easy method of restoring the unit to factory defaults since the recovery partition (where the factory reset retrieves the files from) will be missing. However, this is how a user can reinstall Windows should something go wrong and this is why I recommend having the recovery disks on hand in a safe location.
Alternatively, you could also set a power on password for the unit. A power on password is set in the BIOS under security. With a power on password, only someone who knows this password could even get past the BIOS screen in order to reset the system or to boot any device (CD, USB, HDD, etc.). Be sure to remember this password as you would any other password. Keep in mind that this is not without its risks. For example, a forgotten power on password can be difficult to overcome. Due to the secure nature and depending on the unit (desktop, notebook, commercial unit), there may not be an easy or cheap way to get past a forgotten power-on password.
The solution with the least risk, in my opinion, would be to delete the recovery partition. This document details how to do this.

Itunes doesn't see my ipod shuffle and I want to reset it to factory default

I have a 1st gen ipod shuffle, iTunes does not see it but my computer does, I am running windows 7 and I just want to restore the shuffle to factory default

So, I found out how to fix this issue. In "My Computer" right click on the iPod and format it. I chose to format it using FAT and Default allocation size. After that, I opened iTunes and it recognized my iPod Shuffle. It said it wasn't formatted properly but gave me the option to restore it to factory defaults which fixed everything. Way to go Self. that would depend on whether the recovery partition is still there or not.
Press the blue Thinkvantage button on the keyboard just as the laptop start to boot, this should take you to the Recovery partition (if it is there). Then select full restore to factory condition.

Restoring a Blank HD to factory defaults (including the hidden partition) [T400, Vista x64]

Background info:
I'm installing linux, and instead of asking about everything at once, I'm separating my problems into multiple questions.
I plan to remove all partitions, make new ones (adding an extra one for linux) and then use the recover stuff to bring back windows
The main question (this one), is:
If I completely clear the hard drive of all partitions, and then re partition to include one extra linux (ext3) partition, can I use the "Product Recovery CDs" (the 14 cds that I have burnt using the thinkvantage software) to restore the computer to the exact factory default state? i.e., will it:
1) Completely restore vista
2) Restore the hidden recovery partition (I understand the CDs also act as a recovery partition, but there's 14 of them... I don't know how well I can maintain that many CDs, so I'd rather have another copy on the HD)
3) Not screw up the thinkvantage "stuff" (this is my first lenovo, so I'm not sure, but I want to make sure the support software doesn't go nuts once it notices there's an extra partition, etc.)
