Trouble running rewire on Mac Pro

Hello,
I am trying to set up a rewire configuration on my new Mac Pro and am running into a very strange error. I am familiar with Rewire and had Logic 7.0 running with Live 5.0.3 on my older G4. Both synched tightly and were relatively easy to setup. Logic runs as the master and when you boot Live it detects this and goes into slave mode. On G4, no problem. On Mac Pro, I am getting a very strange error. On this machine I am running Logic 7.2.3 and Ableton Live 5.2.
Here is what the error says:
"Live has detected another active ReWire master application. No Rewire slave applications will be available for use with LIve unless you quit the current ReWire master application and restart Live."
When I read this error, I think... DUH! Of course Live detected another rewire master, I'm trying to sync it as a slave!!!! So this error really doesn't tell me anything other than the fact that Live cannot be the master app. On my older machine, when Live recognized Logic as the master, it automatically went into slave mode. Documentation on Live's website corroborates this. Also, Live 5.2 is suppose to work on Mactel machines. This error occurs anytime I boot Live with Logic running.
So I continue to search for a solution on this. I've read that Logic revamped the Rewire engine in 7.2.3. Has any setup changed that I should know about? I have also gone to the Rewire site and downloaded the latest version of Rewire 1.7 which is suppose to be compatible to Intel.
But over and over again, I get this irritating error message. When I click OK and boot Live up, it runs as standalone without going into slave mode.
Oddly enough, I was able to get Logic to sync to Live using the IAC bus with Live acting as master. This is a good start to finding a solution, but I really prefer to work in Logic with Logic as the master and others as slaves.
Anyone have any insight into how I can get this to work? Maybe new Logic settings? Anyone know if Live 6 is functioning correctly in this manner?
Thanks!
G4 Dual 1.2 / PB 1.5 / MP Quad 2.0   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   3GB on MP

Just a couple things to try:
Start Live first, the Logic.
Start Logic, create your rewire plugin instance, then open Live. Try this with and without the IAC bus enabled
My setup is PT 7.3 with Live (digi version) so I really don't know about the settings in Logic or the full version of Live..
Pretty weird.. sounds like version incompatibility to me..

  • Power Supply Temperatures Running Hot! Mac Pro shuts down.

    Hello,
First I will give machine/hardware specs of interest:
    2 x 3 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon (pre 2009)
    8 GB 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
NVIDIA Quadro FX 5600 (running 2 displays)
    Apple RAID Card/Controller
    SMC Version: 1.25f4
*venting dimensions around computer: top=18", left side=3", right side=3" and back=18".
    Software of interest currently running:
    OS X 10.5.8
    iStat Menu
    SMC Fan Control
My machine has been shutting down spontaneously and I suspect either CPU or power supply overheating. In the 5 instances this has occurred, the room was very warm (AC was not on) and I was running HandBrake with CPU at full and an iStat reading of 145 F. Ambient was 77 F and I was not reading power supply temps at the time. I figured for sure this must be a CPU overheating issue. However, just a few hours ago I had another shutdown. The room was warm again but I was not running Handbrake, but StarCraft II. I have played a lot of Starcraft II with no problems until tonight.
I decided, this time, to check the temps on my power supplies. Power supply 1 = 147 F, and #2 is at 178 F. After many hours of searching forums I have concluded that these are crazy hot temps! I immediately installed SMC Fan Control to attempt to increase the fan speeds. I was successful in increasing all fans except the power supply (stuck at 599rpm). I have now turned the AC on in the house and the Ambient is down to 70, PS #1 145 and PS #2 169. All of these temps are a result of and idle machine running a browser.
The following may or may not be an issue, however, leave no stone unturned. I currently have 12 external devices running on USB. 4 WD passport drives, 1 DVD writer, 5 WD powered drives plus the keyboard and mouse. Also, the Mac Pro is plugged into a small UPS.
In all my forum searches, I just can't seem to answer some basic questions:
    1. Can an overheated power supply shut the system down?
    2. What are optimal (normal) running temps for Mac Pro's? (everyone seems to have opinions, but there doesn't appear to be a technical specification anywhere).
    3. I thought the fans, especially CPU fans, were supposed to kick in when the heat rises. Why are mine staying at minimal rpm's?
Finally, does it look like I need new power supplies? Fans?
This machine was put into service in March of 2008 and has done very intensive rendering for the film industry...long nights...rendering for days sometimes. It has been retired for over a year now and is used at a lesser degree.
Thanks for reading this long post! I appreciate any input you can provide!
    Other iStat reading of interest:
    Power Supply 1 voltage = 12.28 V
    Power Supply 1 current = 26.44 A
    Power Supply 1 power = 316.75 W

Also, the Mac Pro is plugged into a small UPS.
    Put your peripherals on that.
Don't share the same circuit for A/C as the Mac Pro, and put the Mac on 1300VA UPS at least.
As for all those external drives.... I'd consolidate into a good SATA case or two.
And yes in summer run with 3 of the fans up around 900 rpm.

I like FF but am concerned whether it will run on my mac pro running snow leopard, since the download information says it is a windows program.

Snow Leopard being Mac OSX 10.6
You need to download the version for Mac, not the .exe which is for Windows.

  • Geforce 9800 GT Running On Early Mac Pro (EFI32)

I arrived at this point from another thread, which is here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8988306#8988306
To make a long story short, I now have a 9800 GT running safely on my early Mac Pro.
It is a single GPU solution and it works reliably under both Mac OS X and Boot Camp Vista Ultimate 32 and is the fastest GPU (according to the Open GL benchmarks) I've ever seen on any Mac Pro. Absolutely no artifacts under either environment and the Crysis series is easily handled in Boot Camp. Still testing though...
Here is the specific GPU that's now installed:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814187026
The dual fans make it insanely cool. It's also quiet and while perhaps a useless observation, its setup of copper heat sinks and connectors, etc., appears very practically done while also being a kind of attractive arrangement as well.
My 9800 GT is a reflashed PC board by bruinmacs:
    http://shop.ebay.com/merchant/bruinmacsW0QQ_nkwZQQ_armrsZ1QQ_fromZQQmdoZ
As for installation to replace my also very fast 8800 GTS, I had to remove the side rail (two screws) and the daughter board (small lcd display) from the standard 9800 GT so it could fit in the lowest slot. The small lcd is not helpful for us Mac Pro owners.
I don't know for sure, but I believe this board by bruinmacs will run in any Mac Pro (it is PCIE 2).
    FYI...
    Cheers,
    tyvol

    Thanks for the reminder hatter...
I think that you are correct that the ROM's on these reflashed PC GPU's should be targeted to either the EFI32 or EFI64 Mac Pro version.
I forgot to mention that in addition to reflashing the 9800 GT with their ROM update for my EFI32 Mac Pro, bruinmacs also first increased the ROM to 128k.
Don't know for sure (bruinmacs would, though) but it seems to me that with the proper EFI32 or EFI64 ROM reflash, this 9800 GT could work in any current Mac Pro.

  • Fans running fast on mac pro

This quesiton has been brought up many times before, and I've tried the suggestions everyone has offered in resloving the problem of fans running fast on a Mac Pro. In my case they started running fast after Sleep, Restart or after Startup. I have a 2007 Mac Pro and have reset the PRAM and SMC in the past and these, along with updates from Apple, seem to have resovled the problem. Recently, however, I began to have this trouble again and went throught the motions of resetting PRAM and SMC. I even reinstalled my OS Lion to see if that would resolve the issue, but to no avail. So this is why I am writing. In an effort to give someone else a heads up to a new problem I incurred that hasn't been brought up in any discussions on the subject to this point; that I can find, anyway.
About 8 months ago I had one stick of Ram blow on me. I sent it back to OWC and it was replaced no problem. Then I noticed a month ago that all the RAM on my lower riser, except the replacement stick, had blown. Again, all were replaced and this is when the fan issue arose. I tested the RAM on the Upper Riser in the lower slot and they worked. I put the Ram from the Upper Riser on the Lower Riser Board to make sure it worked, and they did. I did this, however, after thinking I had blown the Lower Riser Board and ordered a replacement...glad I did. I now had 8 sticks of Ram in the Upper and Lower Riser all working well, but had a computer that sounded like a 744 just before take off. After numerous attemptst to fix the problem and searching long on the internet I decided to try the New Riser Board I had bought. It workded. That Lower Riser Board, for what ever reason, must be foul somewhere/somehow. I now longer have the problem.
So, I suggest you follow all the advice of those who have written before me because their suggestions worked initially. However, if you've had blown RAM recently, or maybe are about to and this is an indicator you have a Riser Board problem, you just may want to check your Riser's one at a time in both slots to see if the fans run fast while Board is in and the other is not.

  • Final CUt Studio 2 will not run on my Mac Pro & Macbook Pros simultaneously

I was under the impression that the licensing contract for FCPS2 allowed for the software to be installed and run on a desktop and a portable machine simultaneously. Am I wrong? I purchased Final Cut Studio 2 legally, and have installed it on my Mac Pro and my Macbook Pro, but if I try to open one of the FCS apps while one is running on the other computer, I get a protection error message and have to shut down the app. Does anyone know a workaround to this other than shutting off airport on one of the machines?

I was under the impression that the licensing contract for FCPS2 allowed for the software to be installed and run on a desktop and a portable machine simultaneously. Am I wrong?
    Yes, you are wrong.
The license allows for the installation of a copy on each machine but they can not run simultaneously. The intention is to allow users to work with a laptp while away from the main editing machine. If you need the capability running two copies at the same time, buy another copy.

  • HT1338 Has anyone successfully installed Windows XP Mode and Windows Virtual PC software inside Windows 7 Pro inside Parallels 8 inside Mountain Lion running on a Mac Pro built in 2013?

I wanted to ask if anyone using a Mac Pro running Mountain Lion, Parallels 8, and Windows 7 Pro could run XP Mode?
My experience has not been encouraging in that I progress to the end of the final mile, that is configuring XP Mode for first use, then an error message appears saying I should try again, that is I should attempt to configure XP Mode again for the first time use.  An endless loop, with no visibility into the nature of my configuration failure.
I understand my problem is a narrowly focused, microsoft-centric issue, however, I would imagine this XP behavioral Mode running inside Windows 7 Pro is a common goal for many users, so I thought this question was reasonable to ask our group.
    Please advise, and thank you.

    Hello FatMac,
I wanted to let you know that your "requires a patch" feedback looked--at first--like the piece of the puzzle I was missing.  Turned out, however, when I downloaded the 64 bit version of the patch, then attempted to install it under Windows 7 Pro, my installation was first searched, then my patch installation returned a message saying this patch was not applicable to my system. (BTW:my Windows 7 install is 64 bit) This failure to install surprised me because, based on an earlier evaluation for hardware virturalization support, my MacPro does not have virturalization hardware support.  I mean, based on this no hardware support feedback, and based on the nature of this patch, it looked as if the patch should install and set my problem right.
Nevertheless, the patch won't install, and I don't know a way to query or coerce it.  I'm approaching the point of diminishing returns with this problem.  I have two applications (Adobe Illustrator 10 and Framemaker 7.0) which will run, but they don't behave properly, under Windows 7.  BTW: I did make somewhat extensive use of the Windows compatibility tool early on, but nevertheless, FrameMaker 7 simply quits at the worst possible moment, and Illustrator 10 graphics are very often blank black areas where pallettes should be.
Thanks again for your thoughts and help.  I believed we were heading down the right track, but for reasons not visible to me, (the user), the patch that should fix this problem will not install...
If there is any saving grace to this situation, my problem is repeatable.  I mean, it's not on-again/off-again.  When I attempt to configure XP Mode for its first use, the progress bar turns red at the final second, then complains that it could not complete its setup.  Please Try Again recouts its final advice.  (Famous words marking the beginning of an endless loop:-)
Were it not for Illustrator and FrameMaker, I would not have taken us down this dark road.
So long for now, and hope to talk to you all again soon...

  • Can I run the new Mac pro (6.1) with only one stick of ram?

Will that cause any problems. And if not how much will the overall quality be affected. it won't be a permanent solution, but for a few weeks at least. So can it happen? Can I run the Mac pro 2013 with only one memory stick?

    Per this

the 2013 Mac Pro is the only MP that can use a single stick of memory.

  • How Will iMovie Run on New Mac Pro (late 2013)?

Is iMovie v10 ever likely to be upgraded to support the multiple-cores in the new Mac Pro (late 2013) the way Final Cut Pro X does? If not, will a fast iMac run iMovie about as well as the new Mac Pro (late 2013)?

No one here knows what Apples plans are for iMovie?
I think it's fair to say everything will run faster on the new MacPro but I don't think it's a reason by itself to upgrade hardware.
iMovie 10.0.9 runs just fine on my 2010 iMac.

  • Re: Will OS X Lion 10.7 run on 2006 Mac Pro?

I came across this thread searching for a solution to my problem.  I was happily running Snow Leopard on a Mac Pro 1,1.   Then I got this year's Turbotax, which inexplicably requires Lion or later (dunno why they keep doing that, not the first time it's happened).    It sounds like Lion runs ok on this machine, BUT I have a couple PowerPC apps I'd like to keep (mainly, I don't feel like ponying-up to upgrade Photoshop to a non-PowerPC version).
So I think the answer is dual-boot Lion and Snow Leopard.   Fortunately, my HD already has a second empty partition, though it's only 100 GB.   I wonder, should I just put Lion there, or do a clean install with Lion on the main partition (with my home directory), and then re-install Snow Leopard on a second partition ?  I thought I'd heard that it could be problematic to not have the OS on the same partition as one's home directory, and whichever way I do it, that's gonna be the case when I boot up in whichever OS is in the second partition.   Thanks !

Your screenname sounded VERY familiar to me and then...
Did you ever get SheepShaver/Chubby Bunny working?
Without answering your partition questions (I will leave that to the partition experts), here is my "canned" answer to continued use of PowerPC apps in the modern day:
Unfortunately you got caught up in the minor miracle of Rosetta.  Originally licensed by Apple when it migrated from the PowerPC CPU platform that it had used from the mid-1990's until the Intel CPU platform in 2006, Rosetta allowed Mac users to continue to use their library of PPC software transparently in emulation.
However, Apple's license to continue to use this technology expired with new releases of OS X commencing with Lion (and now Mountain Lion).  While educational efforts have been made over the last 7 years, the fact is that Rosetta was SO successful that many users were caught unaware UNTIL they upgraded to Lion, Mountain Lion or Mavericks.
    Workarounds:
    1. If your Mac will support it, restore OS X Snow Leopard;
    2.  If your Mac will support it, partition your hard drive or add an external hard drive and install Snow Leopard into it and use the "dual-boot" method to choose between your PowerPC software or Lion/Mt. Lion/Mavericks;
    3.  Upgrade your software to Intel compatible versions if they are available, or find alternative software that will open your data files, modify them and save them;
    4.  Install Snow Leopard Server (with Rosetta) into Parallels or VMWare Fusion.  Apple is now selling Snow Leopard Server for only $19.99 + sales tax & shipping; call 1.800.MYAPPLE (1.800.692.7753).    This solution will give you concurrent use of your PowerPC applications and access to Lion, Mt. Lion, Mavericks or Yosemite.

  • OSX Server 10.4.11 Run on New Mac Pro?

Hi, we need to upgrade and older G4 running OSX Server 10.4.11 and just want to make sure that the OS will run decent on a new Mac Pro machine. Does this work, or do you have to upgrade to 10.5?
Thanks. Would love the migration to be smooth, as my IT skills are limited. And if we had to upgrade the OS, I'd rather wait until Snow Leopard came out so we wouldn't have to upgrade twice in a short period of time.

Another potential option is to get the current box serviced; refurbished, as it may.
It looks like we would need to get the first generation Mac Pro to keep our 10.4.11 server software, but I suppose we would need the Intel-compatible install disks too, correct? Know if Apple would send Intel install disks if we were licensed owners of OSX Server 10.4 for PPC?
Um, I'd tend to doubt that. (You did get what you purchased, you've used what you purchased, and you probably didn't purchase the software maintenance service plan, right?) But you can always ask Apple, of course.
We really don't need the latest/greatest performance for our server, it's mostly a file-server. Our ancient G4 (upgraded processor to 1Ghz) doesn't seem to slow us down much, and has been pretty solid until now.
If you're looking for "just a file server", get a NAS (Network Attached Storage) box. There are various NAS options available. For low-volume shared stuff, a Time Capsule can suffice as a NAS box.
And I agree it would definitely make most sense to wait until Snow Leopard was available to upgrade, I just don't know if our server is going to last that long...
If you're not looking for the latest and greatest and a low-end Mac box is an option, an Intel Mac Mini (the latest version has FireWire 800, which is rather speedy I/O) can do quite well for serving up data, and can boot and run Leopard and apparently Snow Leopard. It's a respectable entry-level box, with decent I/O.
I did see something in the Snow Leopard documentation about an easy to use migration application for the upgrade. This would probably be very helpful if it worked well. Did Leopard have something similar?
I've had a successful upgrade from Tiger Server to Leopard Server, but in more recent times I tend to reinstall stuff rather than the upgrade. Cruft tends to build up over the years. Sometimes an upgrade blows up. I utilize a "warm standby" server to allow me to test the upgrades and updates before I go into production.

  • Will an HD 5870 run on a Mac Pro 1,1 under Windows?

    Hey Guys,
Done a search for this but can't find any information. I'm looking into getting a little more life out of my Mac Pro (Quad 2.66, 13Gb RAM, HD 3870) by being able to use it for PC gaming, and was wondering whether any of the latest video cards (like the HD 5870) will still run on the machine under a Windows partition (probably Vista 64-bit, but maybe Windows 7 if I upgrade to that).
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Cheers

The question is what do you do instead of use the 3870, as you don't have 3 aux connectors to work with (and one 16x slot, while you probably can get along fine with 4x or 8x for the 3870).
I would not even give Vista the time of day. But, Windows 7 Pro 64-bit is a 'must' to use more than 2GB RAM; to use both processors. Else, it really doesn't work as well, and Vista isn't worth the effort.
So once you solve the EFI64 boot issue that Windows and Apple now use for 64-bit, you'll be fine.
Then again, maybe its time to cut loses, some people would be happy to be able to run Tiger, and are willing to pay $1k for a system like yours.
