Trouble saving files in Illustrator

Only recently I'm having trouble saving files in AI. It will take forever or just crash while saving especially when saving as a .pdf. Has anybody ran into this? I'm wondering if it's a recent thing all around or just me. I've been using this for almost a year now and have no worries until now. Please help!

things to check for:
Check disk for errors
Do a defrag
Check you fonts for corruption
Check your preference file for curruption (easiest to just replace it)
Check for enough drive space for the file itself plus the virual drive space need for your OS.
think if any other programs are showing signs of file errors.
As a last resort try reinstalling illustrator.

  • Saving files in Illustrator

    Hello,
Rookie question: I have had someone doing work for me in Illustrator (CS5) and she has saved all files as .pdf. There is not a single .ai file on the machine. She says there is no reason to save as .ai because Illustrator will allow us to open and edit the .pdf files anyway.
    Is this correct?
Also, can a file be created in Illustrator and ONLY saved as pdf (I would think it is necess to save the .ai first and then create pdf later)?
    Thank you for your help,
    Chris

When you save an Illustrator file in AI format with the option Create PDF Compatible File turned on (default), two entire versions of the artwork are written into the file: one as native AI content, the other as "dumbed down" PDF content, "cordoned off" as if in a "black box" for use by other programs which cannot open the native AI content. The file is given a .ai extension, and should show an Illustrator icon in the OS. When you try to open that file with Acrobat, it is the dumbed-down Acrobat stuff that opens, not the native Illustrator stuff. Similarly (and often not realized), when you import that file into InDesign, it is the dumbed-down PDF content that is actually imported, not the native AI stuff. InDesign cannot import an AI file if the PDF version of the content is not included.
Inversely, when you save an Illustrator file in PDF format with the option Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities turned on (again default), two entire versions of the artwork are written into the file: one as "dumbed down" PDF content; the other as native AI content, "cordoned off" in a "black box" for use by Illustrator. So this just flops the whole thing. The file is given a .pdf extension, and should show a PDF icon in the OS. But when you open that file with Illustrator, Illustrator checks for the Illustrator-native content and opens that.
Back when this nonsense was implemented, it allowed Adobe's marketing to claim that "PDF is now Illustrator's native format."
Many designers, seemingly proud of their esoteric knowledge that this confusing crap is going on, seem to think it somehow "clever" to therefore save every thing as a PDF, because "After all, it contains the AI-native content, too." Doing so is bad practice, because as you've discovered it just creates confusion for downstream users who don't understand why they get properly editable content when they open one "PDF" with Illustrator, and why they get dumbed-down garbage when they open another PDF.
    My advice:
If the file is intended for later editing in Illustrator and/or for archiving, don't play games with downstream users; just save it as dang Illustrator file. Yeah, if you're not worried about needlessly bloated file size, go ahead and leave the PDF compatibility option on.
If the file is considered finished, and is intended for delivery as a PDF, just save it as a PDF. If you don't intend for the recipient to edit it in Illustrator, turn off the Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities option and thereby significantly reduce the file size. Yeah, if you just don't trust yourself to deliver a properly print- or press-ready PDF and consider allowing some unknown dweeb with an unknown expertise level at the printing house to muck around with your file at the last minute some kind of "safety net"—go ahead and leave on the Illustrator Editabilty option if it makes you feel better.
My practice is to act like I always did before this silly smoke-and-mirrors stuff was implemented. I think and work in terms of "working files" and "delivery files". I save the working file in AI format, and leave the silly embedded PDF option on jus because it's default, unless I'm sending it to someone and want to minimize file size. When I save as PDF, I turn off the Illustrator Editabilty option because I don't intend for someone to edit it in Illustrator. (If I did, I would...duh...send an AI file.)
In other words, I basically pretend that the smoke-and-mirrors doesn't exist, and I don't try to be "clever" about it. I save what I think of as a native AI file in .ai format. I save what I intend to be a PDF file in .pdf format.
For more esoteric fun & games, we can later talk about the equally nonsensical idea that PNG is the "native format" of Fireworks.

  • Saved files in illustrator turn into all black when viewing

    Hi All,
I've searched through the forums + google but haven't been able to get an answer on why this is happening.  Sometimes when I save files as a pdf in Illustrator, or receive files from other people the image loses it's colour.
All colour is just black.  I'm attaching a screen shot so you can see what I mean, the colours here are supposed to be a shades of a PMS colour, but instead they're all black.
    Hopefully someone can help!
    Thanks in advance.
    Jo

You should never view any PDF in any other program than Acrobat or Reader. All other viewers support only a subset of PDF standards, so they are not reliable viewer program.
The Word thing has nothing to do with Illustrator or PDF. You need to know,
in which program the Word embedded graphic was created.
how the graphic was saved as. Not every file type, which can be imported on Word in Windows is supported completely on the Mac, like EMF, WMF, but also other file types. (The other way round is also true.)
How the graphic was imported. Some people copy an image or a graphic from a source and paste it via clipboard. Which is not a good way, because it needs several system ressources from the local computer to show up in the host application, in that case in Word. If such a document is opened on a different computer, often even on the same Operating System, those images show up black. The only correct and robust way to import images in Word is via the Insert-Command or button with a compatible file selected.
Another problem might be, that an image or graphic was inserted in a version which creates docx files, like 2007 or 2010.Those versions support more graphic file types than older versions do. But because some people think, it is better to save files as DOC than as DOCX (smae with PowerPoint or Excel) for compability those images get lost and are only represented as black boxes. In my experience it happens often with PNG-24 files. It is never a good idea to save DOCX back to DOC. I inerit only problems with that workflow. (Also when I import files into InDesign I get always messed up with footnotes with this method, several get lost, several change their reference with each other, I have got DOCs where not even 1 of 400 footnotes was on its original place after import to InDesign. But this is another topic, but it is also an argument to avoid this workflow!)

  • Trouble saving files in CS4?

When trying to save a .psd file today after working on an image I got a message saying - Could not save as "_IJD3271.psd" because of disk error. Has anyone any idea what might be causing this to appear and even better how to remedy it. This has just started today as I was working recently on images and saving them without any problems whatsoever.
    Thanks,
    Ian

    Could your hardware be faulty?
Do you work aross a network or locally?
    Boilerplate-text:
Are Photoshop and OS fully updated and have you performed the usual trouble-shooting routines (trashing prefs by keeping command-alt-shift/ctrl-alt-shift pressed while starting Photoshop after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved and making a note of the Preferences you’ve changed, 3rd party plug-ins deactivation, system maintenance, cleaning caches, font validation, etc.)?

  • Opening or saving files cause Illustrator 5.1 to crash, Feb 2011 MBP, Lion

I have the Creative Suite 5.5.  Illustrator starts, but trying to open (.ai or .pdf) or save a file causes it to crash
I have deleted the preferences folder

    Larry,
I did the unintall of just Illustrator and removed Preferences, however following directions the Cleaner Tool would not just clean for Illustrator.  the XLM file it produced did not list Illustrator separately, nor any Suite compenent, just Creative Suite (XLM listed below).  So I just uninstalled the whole suite, rebooted, then went back to the Cleaner Tool.   I tried to used the terminal command
sudo /PDHilman's Path to Adobe Creative Suite Cleaner Tool.app/Contents/MacOS/Adobe Creative Suite Cleaner Tool ‐‐removeAll=CS5
But that gave an error message silent mode only worked for CS5.5 or below and went back to the GUI (odd).  I then used the Cleaner Tool GUI and removed all CS5 - CS5.5.   The log file is also below.
I went into my library and there were still many CS5 - CS5.5 items under Application Support and Preferences!  For example  com.adobe.illustrator.plist.lockfile
I then reinstralled the whole suite.
STILL ILLUSTRATOR CRASHES WHEN TRYING TO OPEN A FILE.
I note, I think the last thing I did before this started was followed some directions to copy Mathematica fonts into my user library so I wasn't missing some math symbols when editing PDFs created with Mathematica.  But that was successful and I was able to open/edit/save them just fine.

  • Saving Files from Illustrator CC layers palette?

Is there a way to save files directly from the layers palette in Illustrator CC? I'm working on a rebrand project with hundreds of logo variations and I'm trying to figure out if there's an automated way to save .ai files from my layers panel (so I can batch them into various file formats using actions)? Thanks.

Ask in the scripting forum. There will be limitations, though, since AI doesn't really have the smartness in that department. You will still have to properly organize items first and do things like explicitly naming them uniquely...

  • Trouble saving files in Audition 3.0

Starting today, I can't save any file I have in edit mode as an mp3.  All the options I have have an asterisk
next to it, which I never noticed before, and my option mp3 read MP3PRO (FhG) (*mp3.)  What does this mean
and how can I resolve this issue?
    Ken

I don't know if you have made a typo but "MP3PRO (FhG) (*mp3.)" should read "MP3PRO (FhG) (*.mp3) with the dot between * and mp3. When you say that you can't save your file is it just the .mp3 format that is giving you problems?
It has been known for the file suffix to become corrupted if someone has mistakenly typed the incorrect suffix into a file name. To make Audition save .mp3 files with the correct suffix do a Save As and fully type in the correct suffix rather than letting Audition add it itself. Ie. if "filename" is what you want to call your saved .mp3 type "filename.mp3" into the filename box. Audition should then save future .mp3s OK.

  • Trouble saving files as jpg or eps in CS3

I recently moved from OSX 10.4 to OSX 10.6 (new computer) and seem to have lost the ability to save photoshop files (CS3)  in eps or jpg format. I can "save to web", which will save small jpgs, but once was able to save jpgs of any size in the "save as" drop down menu. Now I don't have an option there for jpg or eps files. How can I get back the ability to save my files in those formats?

Just to make sure, those files are 8bit and RGB or CMYK (Edit: or grayscale)?

When is sunlight, absolutely. Not a problem with the Droid Ultra but rather all phones.
You ever see the commercial about the Nook devices. The have a special screen to reduce glare allowing you to see your screen in sunlight.
As far as I know, companies have not implemented this on anycell phone.
There are after market anti-glare screen protectors
Check Amazon or eBay, they should be relatively inexpensive.

  • Double file extensions keep showing up when saving a file in Illustrator CS3???

I just installed the CS3 suite and when I am saving files in illustrator I keep getting double file extensions. For example if I save a file named "filename" as a .eps file it shows up in the save window with filename.eps.eps Also, if I click through the possible file types to save it keeps adding them one after the other so if I click. say pdf eps and ai the file in the "Save As:" window looks like this " filename.pdf.eps.ai.ai" Any ideas why this is happening? I keep having to mouse click in the "Save As:" box and delete the extra extension. This is really annoying!!
I am running the design premium CS3 on OSX 10.5 on a mac pro.
    Thanks.

    >Wade... I've seen it... and reported it originally to Adobe. I've since realized it's a 10.5.1 issue. It doesn't happen with 10.4.11, just 10.5.1
I've seen extra periods (.) and extra extensions.
then you and Dave have the same conflict with a third party software, corrupt font, corrupt preference or the like because it is not happening o my Mac Pro and I have the same model Mac as you do and I am working fine in 10.5.1 and only problem I have had with AI CS 3 is when I tried to place a 3D CAD file with the extension .dxf which is not really supported.
I have not seen this even once. Would you like to see screen shots, it honestly is not a 10.5.1 or Illustrator issue on its own. This has to be user specific.

  • Photoshop is Crashing when saving files

Hello, I have been having some trouble saving files.  Sometimes, and usually with the first file, Photoshop will crash when I try and save a file.  It also happens when I try and open a file into photoshop.  Most specifically, when I try and open my watermark file (png).  I have deleted the preferences, and am working on a freshly installed version of Windows 7.  Here is the crash report I was able to retrieve.  I am usually not able to retreive this info, because in most cases, Photoshop just completely dissapears instantly.

    StackHash implies memory corruption.
By and large, during software development, the number 1 reason I've isolated for that is problems in display drivers.  That's not to say it's the only reason memory could be corrupted, but it's more common than most people would think.
What video card do you have, and what version of display driver?
Does the problem persist if you disable OpenGL Drawing in Edit - Preferences - Performance (then restart Photoshop)?

  • Memory Used for Saving Files

My IT person is giving me a hard time because I've used 5.5 gigabytes of memory in the 2.5 years that I've worked here design everything from brochures to ads, etc.  Does that sound like an unreasonable amount of memory for desktop publishing?  His solution is to have me save everything onto 11 discs and have a spreadsheet to determine what projects are on which disk. I have no point of reference - and haven't run into this issue in past jobs.  Between saving files in Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, PDFs and stock photography, the amount of memory seems reasonable to me.  And saving projects on discs sounds cumbersome.
    Appreciate the feedback.

When talking about Memory most people think RAM not hard disk space. 5.5 gigs is a trivial amount of hard disk space to be used for projects in the DTP business. It should take up a trivial amount of space on your hard drive. HOWEVER, all your work if needed should be archived to CDs or DVDs as appropriate. If for nothing else backup. Each project should have its own disks or disks that can be externally marked. BTW, 1 terabyte drives are available for about $100. Tell IT to get a life, get off your back, and buy you a decent sized drive or two.
