Trouble searching network folders in Lion

I'm having trouble searching my work network folders now that I have installed Lion. It is a windows network and snow leopard was always slow to come up with results but I always knew it was working when the little spinner showed up in the bottom right corner. In lion when I type in a seach term in finder, it shows me nothing and there is no indication it is doing anything, even when I know the file is already there. It seaches my hard drive very fast as that is indexed.

We're having this exact same problem.
Shared files on a Windows server are not being searched by Lion. It was perfectly fine pre-Lion but now nothing is showing up in search results (even files I know are there).
We need a fix for this as soon as possible.

  • Can't search network shares in Lion

We've got several Macs that connect to a Windows Server 2003 network share. I've tried connecting via cifs and smb I still can't search folders on the network share. Browsing and pulling files over to the Mac work fine. This happens with all the Macs that are using Lion. It worked perfectly on Snow Leopard. Any tips on how to get this working?

This has been a confirmed issue/feature with Lion. There is a long discussion going on since months in a parallel discussion:

  • Searching recursive folders over network

I have a main folder we will say called scans. These are all pdf's. Each month I make a new folder in that folder to break them up. So it would look like this...
    Scans>2009-01>file.pdf
in this scans folder I have a lot of other folders! I need a way to search the main folder but also have search drill thru the recursive folders. Did I mention this is over a network? I set up the scans folder in sharing and set permissions. Great but couldn't access the recursive folders... So I command-I and set recursive in the folder permissions and properties. This works but I can not seem to find a way to search in these folders. I would like to open the shared folder "scans" and all of the month folders are there. But I would then also like to be able to search for files typing the name into the search box in finder. Every time I try it defaults to searching the macs drive and not the share.
I also scan from a differn't Mac then they are stored on. the way I have it shared seems to work fine for saving the scan to the network share from the scanning program! That was easy to do but I do not understand why the search does not work right. Does it take time to index or something bizarre like that?
Having this folder shared does it make security holes? What is the best firewall settings for this setup? Two other iMac will access one iMac basically it is the main machine while the others are terminals. They are linked by a Time Capsule in bridged mode to a 2wire router for outside world access.
I know I dumped a lot in one post but I would appreciate help!

Okay more simple approach! How can you search shared folders over a network?

  • Mail+Spotlight Search Not Working in Lion

I've been dealing with this problem for over a month and have not been able to fix it.  Search works fine in Lion on several computers, but on my laptop it still won't do a complete search.  It will only pull up emails from people in my contacts list..... no subject key word searches or people outside my contacts searches..... very frustrating! The searches also don't work in Spotlight, so I can't use spotlight as a backup.
I've tried rebuilding my mailbox.... deleting and recreating the account.... tossing out the Envelope Index folders in the Mail library... Deleting and re installing my search window, etc...... I see lot's of other people with the same issue. It's frustrating when your running your business on your computer and have to deal with a flaw in a new OS..... it was working fine in Leopard..... whats up APPLE?  Please help!

    Glenn,
Regarding adding and deleting the System Drive from the Spotlight Privacy Tab...... I'm following your sequence, but when I come back to Spotlight Search in the menu bar it just works the same.... no mention of indexing. What's interesting is that "Mail" dosn't appear anywhere in search results when a keyword search is performed via spotlight.
Regarding the "enevelope Index Files" ..... I followed the instructions and quit and re-opened mail as instructed.  When I re-opened Mail I selected "continue" and the program began to index the contents of mail for about 30 minutes.  I thought that would would fix the issue, but it's still not working.
I've tried to compare the account setup from my IMAC which works fine to see if I have something setup wrong in the account, but everything looks the same.
I guess I can try to re-index again?  Don't know what else to do?
    Thanks,
    Bill

  • How to Search Multiple Folders?

I am using a new machine with 10.7.2 Lion and I'm unable to do something I used to do on 10.4.11 Tiger, that is, search multiple folders simultaneously in Finder. To be clear, in a Finerd window, I was able to hit command-f and the current folder name would appear along with a button that said "Others." Clicking that would allow me to select any number of additional folders to include in my search. There isn't an "Others" button in Lion! What happened? Did the Lion developers get Lost?

    Greg,
There's one way of doing this that's even easier than before.
Use a Spotlight Search, one of the best OSX features ever. Simply press CMD-space, and you'll get a small window. Type in your search criteria, and Spotlight will automatially list all of the hits on your computer - without even pressing enter.
If you're searching, say, using Safari, CMD-F will let you search for all the hits on the site you're on, and highlight them. Press Enter to cycle through the hits, if you have any.
Otherwise, use Spotlight for your system search needs.

  • Searching Network Folder Finds Nothing

I just upgraded to a new MacBook (10.5.6) from an ibook (10.3.9). When I connect to a Network folder, I can access all files in the network folder, but when I try to search for files on the network folder, I get no results. I have no trouble searching for files on my machine. Even when I am searching for a specific file name that I know is on the network folder, it doesn't show up in the search results.
    Any help is appreciated.

I seem to have full permissions. I can read, write, you name. My only problem is with searching. If I look in Finder, I see all of the files in the network folder. But, if I try to search that folder, using either Spotlight or Command-F, I get no results. I understand that maybe Spotlight only looks on my machine, but when I use Command-F, it gives me the option to select the network folder for searching. It just doesn't give any results.
For example, I make a file called test.docx and put it on the network folder "New Documents". I can see that file using Finder on "New Documents" but if I were to try Command-F, select "New Documents" to search under, select "Name" "Matches" and type "test" no results are returned.
As you can imagine, this is driving me crazy, because as a practice in my office, we save all of our files to this network folder.
    Thanks again for your responses.

  • Can't view hidden network folders on pc (server 2003)

Hi, sorry if this has been discussed before, but I can't find anything after searching forums/google for 2 days, on and off. I'm a born again newbie to Mac and I'm trying to view hidden folders on my company network. I am able to access the network and gain access to all of my network folders, but not the hidden ones, for example, hiddenfolder$. Is there anyway to do this? My anti Mac boss, doesn't want our work "exposed" to the company and insists they stay hidden, out of sight, out of snooping eyes. Thanks for your help.

I have found two mechanisms that are working for me.
    1) Connect first to a non-hidden share. Authenticate properly to the server. Now, try and connect to the hidden share. It appears that Leopard is failing to ask for authentication from me if I connect to the hidden share first. If I connect to the non-hidden share first, it remembers the authentication and works fine for me.
    2) The directions from this post work for me: http://groups.google.com/group/comp.sys.mac.misc/browse_thread/thread/fe43e0b718 3465a8
    Quoted:
Generally Finder -> Go -> Connect to Server...
    smb://workgroup;username:[email protected]/sharename
    Should work, where:
workgroup: Workgroup (optional if default is
    the correct workgroup)
username: Username (optional if you are prompted)
password: Password (optional if you are prompted)
    server.address: Server NetBIOS name
    -OR- domain.name.com
    -OR- IP address
sharename: Share name (optional if server lets you browse)
I have been able to omit the workgroup/domain in my case with success, and just supply the username and password.
My current theory is that is that Leopard is just not asking for "authentication", so the two mechanisms that work for me appear to force the authentication to happen in a different fasion.
Good luck. I hope it works for you.

  • Windows Server 2008 - password protect network folders

I was tasked to password protect a few folders that are being shared in the network.  The folders are stored in the server (that i have admin access) and anyone in the network have full access to the folders and the files inside those folders. The computers linked in the network have different OS - 3 running vista, 2 running xp and 1 windows server 2008.  Anybody in the office can use the computers without being prompted for a password (except the server) and the folders are accessible through any of those computers.
    The following are my questions:
    1. Is it possible to password protect folders shared in the network? If so, if someone wants to access those password protected folder through any of the computers connected to the network, will they be prompted to enter a password to be able to access it or the system will just say "access denied?" If so, please give detailed instructions on how to do it.
    2. If it is possible to password protect network folders, is it possible to put different passwords on each folders? If so please give detailed instructions on how to do it.
    3. If it is not possible to do any of the mentioned above through windows, is it possible with the use of a third-party software? If so, what are those third party software?

Hi All,   First time on this forum and am finding it very interesting (sorry about the proposed as answer above.. hit the wrong key).
I found this topic particularly interesting and am looking to do a similar thing but seemed to have gotten around it quite easily (if I am on the same lines as greggync777 that is).
My problem is this I have a Home Theatre Network set up in my lounge to several locations around the house with around 8 gb of videos/music/pics etc, all works fine on connected pc's with WMC (all using Windows 7) and all is shared by family for entertainment.
I also have a Seperate workstation where I do my work (video editing) which involves storing considerable amounts of footage and more importantly all the work files/folders all of which is confidential, at the moment is also on a seperate pc which also houses 8 hdd with around 6gb of ever growing video information.
My point is that both these PC's ( HTPC and my WORKSTATION) are a bit too noisy despite having installed the best I can afford fans/Samsung eco green hdd's. My desire is to build a main super server running WHS 2008 (The size/Cooling/Noise etc is not a problem due to where it will be located). My main concern is Security with so many in the family having direct access to the Server so I want to restrict which files/folders they can subsequently access once there.  I want to be the only one to have access to my work from my PC and everyone else denied access.  I have set up a test rig running WHS08 and have set up access with several PC's using passwords for the server etc which was straightforward after creating a user account for them on whs08, therein laid the problem of then how to keep them from accessing my side of the server which is when I hit up on this thread after much searching. Following one of the suggestions above I went to the folder in question (in my case this will be a plus as all my work will be in one main folder with several thousand sub folders) to the security tab/permissions etc and firstly removed access to everyone except the server administrator. I then granted access only to one PC on the network - the one that is my workstation together with a password ( I meant to say upto this point everyone I had given access to the server could access my test folder), went back to my PC and was able to access as normal after entering the password. I then went to every other PC on the network (that has access to the Server) where I am pleased to say all denied me access to my folder. (my work pc by the way is running XPsp3). Not sure if it will work for Greggync777 or if it what he is looking to do but it did for me. I apologise also if I have rambled on a bit for my first thread.
    tks   Dave

  • Search multiple folders and muiltiple files and combine to single file

I want to search multiple folders for muliple files and combine to single file name. The files I'm searching have same format, but where named
differently in each of there processes. Now I want to combine based upon -SearchFor .. I'm having a problem with -Filter $SearchFor
    Code:
    Function Search-Files{
    Param([String[]]$Locations,[String[]]$SearchFor, $AppendTo)
    Begin
    If(-Not (Test-Path $AppendTo)){New-Item $AppendTo -ItemType File -Force}
    Process
    ForEach($Location in $Locations)
    $Files = Get-ChildItem -Path $Location -Filter $SearchFor -Recurse
    ForEach($File in $Files)
    Get-Content -Path $FIles.FullName | Out-File $AppendTo -Append
    End{}
    Search-Files -Locations "\\servera\public\t1\usa\saleshist\","\\serverb\public\t2\usa\saleshist\",-SearchFor "dodetail-cm.txt","somstr.txt",-AppendTo "\\virt1\Saleshist_data_load_files\saleshdr.load.csv"

I think you might want to use -Include instead of -Filter.  Your -Include parameter accepts wildcards, i.e. *.docx or *somstr.txt
Your command to actually append the content should be:
    Get-Content -Path $File.FullName | Out-File $AppendTo -Append
You had $Files.FullName which might behave unexpectedly, if at all.
Your actual command has several issues.
    Search-Files -Locations "\\servera\public\t1\usa\saleshist\","\\serverb\public\t2\usa\saleshist\" -SearchFor "dodetail-cm.txt","somstr.txt" -AppendTo "\\virt1\Saleshist_data_load_files\saleshdr.load.csv"
You had commas following the lists of locations and searchfor terms, did that even work? Without seeing your source files or your target file I can only advise you so much, but ideally you would import-csv and export-csv.  Depending on the contents,
you may be able to get away with get-content and out-file though.
I hope this post has helped!

  • Iphone 5 keeps searching network problem....

My iphone 5 today suddenly started started searching network,
I took out the SIM card , it still kept searching for network instead of saying no sim or no service.
I reset network settings, then all settings, turned phone on off several times, put back sim in, hard reset it etc.
I haven't restored it from itunes that I will do next but I am wondering if any one had simlar problem.
Taking SIM card out should changed it to no sim or no service but it doesn't do that so that is weird. It doesn't matter which location because I was in my car when it started searching and I came back home still the same.
Another thing is it doesn't give me an option to select carrier manually as that option has disappeared from the settings.

Well I had the exact same problem with my Iphone 5s, I tried many things such as turning the airplane mode on/off, restarting the device and also did a network settings reset. Nothing helped.
The next thing I did was to do a general reset via iTunes to factory settings (Made a backup first. Very important if you can connect to iTunes, it's a MUST). When the phone booted-up again, I had to ''activate the phone. But to activate it, I needed a connection with a network. But that was the whole problem so I was stuck and couldn't do anything with the device.
So I called the Apple support centre. We tried a few things, they all dindn't work. The last option (which worked for me) was to do a recovery (I have no idea what this reset is called)  via the device+ iTunes.
To perform the reset, please follow these steps and hopefully it will work for you as well.
    1. Open iTunes
    2. Connect your USB cable to the computer, NOT to your device yet.
    3. Power Off your device, and be sure that it is Off.
    4. Press the home and hold it.
    5. Connect the USB cable to your phone. You will see a iTunes logo on your device, you can release the home button.
    6. Do a recovery via iTunes. iTunes will now recover the phone.
If it doesn't work the first time, try again. I had to do it twice and luckily it worked the second time.
I hope that this will help, Good luck!

  • Searching through "foldered" Trash on a Firewire drive

I like to keep my Trash nice and tidy and only delete incrementally when I begin to run out of space. This is what I do: every week or so I open up the Trash on my "Trash" drive (the one with the most spare space that stores all my Trash), create a dated folder (YYMMDD), and copy all the "unfoldered" trash from all drives to that new folder. Then I empty the Trash on the other drives.
To remove the oldest folder when I need to (to free up space), I select the one at the top of the Trash and use my favourite Terminal command: +sudo rm -R+. Love that command.
My question is: sometimes I want to search this "foldered" trash. I came across the trick of making the trash visible by +Go To Folder > ~/.Trash+ but that doesn't seem to find items in folders in the Trash on external drives. I tried it once on a file I knew was there, and nothing came up.
Is it possible to search a "foldered" trash that is on an external drive without scripts or other complications?

what cause searching network problem after updating iphone 6 from iOS 8.1.2 TO iOS 8.1.3?

  • Network folders for "other" user

I have managed to set up a lab of iMacs (new) bound to AD via Windows Server. I had users make shortcuts to their 3 main network folders. Works fine. Users can't always get to "their" workstations though so I'd like to set up the "other" user to load those same three network folders on log in, or at least make it easy for them to do it once logged in. As is, the server shows up a finder window's left pane under "Shared" but they have to drill through the whole server to find their own folders.
I'm just a teacher here, though I've made WAY more progress then the IT bozos that get paid for this, they have deferred to me (thank goodness).
    Any help much appreciated.

I followed the suggestion of plugging the EX2 directly into the Windows8 PC, and it didn't work, in-fact the internet stopped working, until I reverted the connection and let windows fix the problem. I did make a minor step with homegroups, as I felt there was no where to turn but to try to get homegroups working once again.  It works, the homegroup sees the other computer, but every second, yes, every second, when you click on the homegroup icon in windows explorer, the window to the right changes from the name of the Windows 8 computer to immediately No other homegroups PC's are available right now, that happens every second, I can time it, it switches every 1-2 seconds between the name of the Windows 7 computer to the error I posted a few words back.  Sharing anything drive on the EX2 so it can be accessed on Windows8, same as it always has been, I don't see the drive on Windows8.  Mapping the drive on Windows7 works flawlessly, except, I have a few files that I know I didn't delete but are not showing up, and I have transcoded folders ? As well I can't share any folder on the EX2 because it's listed under the user nobody and it's restricted to that users control for which I don't have a password for ?

  • Finder problems using network folders

I am using NFS in my setup with an iBook and a PowerMac G5 both using NFS to network to a Linux fileserver. I am having some unusual problems with the Finder. Specifically, when I try to copy files from a local to a mounted NFS folder using the Finder, it can cause the system to hang. Moreover, even when copying a file within an NFS folder to the same folder under a different file name and then deleting the copy, the Finder display often goes crazy sometimes refusing to display any files in the folder or even worse, scrambling the file and/or subfolder names in that NFS folder. The problem seems to be entirely in Finder because when I look at the same folder in Terminal, everything works fine -- there is no underlying NFS problem.
The problem is even more acute when I use the NFS union mount option. What I want to do in my iBook is to union mount a network users diretory on top of /Users -- this way, both local and network users will have their directories available to them in the same place. Union mounts drive the Finder crazy and this can be readily checked. The mount seems to work fine, and the finder displays the union-ed directory fine. However, when you try to look at any of the folders in the directory, I basically get a system folder that is not even in the same directory tree sometimes, and at others, random network folders. Again, when looking at things in Terminal everything seems to work fine.
What is wrong with Finder and NFS? How on earth can Finder have problems displaying a directory structure? I keep having other problems when using GUI based programs with NFS volumes -- random failures seem all too common while the Terminal seems to work fine each time. Is the Apple implementation of NFS hopelessly broken? Or is it just the Finder that has problems. Either way, I am surprised and concerned that a mounted network directory exhibits seemingly random behavior in a GUI. Any help on these issues would be much appreciated.
    Power Mac G5 2.0Ghz Mac OS X (10.4.6)
    Power Mac G5 2.0Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Seems to be new behavior that if you delete a directory you are currently in it jumps back to the root instead of a directory above or after the deleted one. Just press the back button and you will be back in the directory.
