Trouble sharing printer from OS 10.3.9 to Windows XP

I have a G4 running OS 10.3.9, and there is an HP 6MP printer attached. It is on a network with a mess of Windows XP machines, and I want to be able to share the printer with them.
I did all of the standard steps (enable Printer Sharing, etc), and set up a password protected guest account.
// Start of Microsoft jargon
When I set up a Windows machine to have access to the printer, I go to the "Show Workgroup Computers" window, and open a connection to the G4. To do this, I select the guest account on the G4, and enter the related password. I then drag the icon for the printer to the "Printers and Faxes" window, and select the driver for the printer.
// End of Microsoft jargon
This is the rub: if the guest account has Admin privleges on the G4, there is no problem and I can print just fine. However, if the guest account is a standard account, then after I setup the printer on the Windows machine, it's status is "Access denied, unable to connect".
Does anybody know a way around this problem? The obvious approach is to give the guest account Admin privileges, but that defeats the entire point of having a Guest account.
Dual 500 MHz G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Hi David
How about you don't use Guest account at all, just tell the XP where to find the printer connected to your Mac, by specifying an address, as described in the following link, where there is much discussion of printing from a PC to a printer connected to a Mac:
http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20040208122655345
Afterthought: By activating File sharing are you invoking Guest log on? Perhaps try just having Printer sharing only.

Can you see the CD ripped songs in iTunes itself? Can you then right-click and select "Show in Windows Explorer"?

  • Can't print to Windows 7 shared printer from Mac OS Lion

    Dear all,
I would like to share my experience battling to figure out how to print to Windows 7 shared printer from Mac OS Lion. Myself had this problem and looking throughly in internet without success. But finally I figured out the solution by myself, hope this can help other Mac user with similar problem.
OK, when I try to setup my new MacBook Pro with OS Lion to connect with my Canon MX308 printer attached to desktop with Windows 7 Ultimate,
    1. I simply select System Preferences>Print & Scan.
    2. Then looks for the + sign just below the box to add a new printer.
    3. From the option toolbar above, I select Windows. I have connect this MacBook with my Windows Network, so the workgroup will appear to the left column.
    4. After I select this group, the computer list will appear in the middle column
    5. Then after I select the computer which my printer connected to, my printer sharename will appear in the right column
    6. Last step is to select the printer I want to use.
    7. After that it will automatically put your printer sharename to the "Name". And then I select my printer driver at "Print Using" and find my printer manufacturer which is Canon MX300 series from driver lists. Finish!
My printer appear in the Printers List. But the problem is everytime I try to print there will be error message saying "ON HOLD Authentication Required".
This problem start to kill me, I search all around for similar problem, but the solution was never worked for me!
Until just now I figured out accidentally for the solution.
THE PROBLEM LIES ON MY PRINTER DRIVER!!!! Although I have downloaded the most update driver from Apple site and Apple Software update said there is no more update for my system!
The solution for my problem is Gutenprint Printer Driver! You can download this driver at http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php, then select for the latest driver gutenprint-5.2.7.dmg. Install this driver!
Then back to Print & Scan in System Preferences, then right click on Printers List box, then choose "Reset Printing System..." to clear the previous failed printers.
After that, repeat the above step 2 - 7. Only for the last step I need to select the Printer Driver for my Canon MX308 for the driver name : "Canon PIXMA MX300 - CUPS+Gutenprint v5.2.7"
Now I can sleep as a baby knowing that my printer make a friend with my new Macbook Pro! Hope this will help others!

I have the same setup but with a Canon MX850.  This did not fix my problem.

every time I print on Mini2 its always asking for a user & password before Printing. How can we fix it.
    I tried
    - lpd printing = "authentication required"
    - reset printer settings ang re-install printer = "authentication required"
    - replace sharename in windows7, reinstall printer in Mini2 = "authentication required"
This stuff never happened to Mini1.

  • Print to Windows Shared Printer from Mac on wireless network

My set up is: HP Deskjet 1050 410 USB to a WIndows 7 PC. The PC has 4 users, each password protected for login and  public (not protected) folders. The Macbook is running OS X 10/6/8. I have downloaded the latest HP drivers.
I found the printer on the workgroup network and installed it as the only printer on the Macbook. When I send a job to print, I am prompted to either login as a guest or as a user with a password. Either way, I get an eror message "On Hold (Authentication required)" Under Job Info is the following message "NT_STATUS_INVALID_PARAMETER"
THis is an improvement over what was happening before when I could not find the printer in the list and had to manually use the IP address. Even then, I could not print, I would get a communication error.
The first time I installed the printer driver (an earlier driver and earlier release of OS X 10.6) I had no problems printing from the Macbook. It found the printer and printed without any password authentication. Nothing has changed on the PC, the printer is shared with all users on the network, but I can't seem to print.
I noticed many postings with similar issues but I did not see any resolution. Help! (Thanks!)

hey just want to say thanks to you guys... I just this week switched to Mac after 14 years of heavy PC use. Mac's been awesome except for that I couldn't print to my PC based printer... now I can... and I couldn't of done it with out this apple discussion thread about HPIJS.

  • Printing to a Mac shared printer from windows 8

How can I print to a Mac shared printer (OS: 10.8.2) from my Windows 8 PC which is using the same Apple network?
    Matthias

I have tried using Bonjour on for Windows on Win8 however while it finds the printer and can add it no problem whenever a job is sent to the printer a blank page is printed. The Win8 machine can print to the printer fine if directly connected and the same driver is used when printing via Bonjour so one can only assume it's a "communications" issue between the Win8 machine and my Mac Pro which is sharing the printer.

  • Sharing Printer from iMac

I have an HP PhotoSmart C4280 connect via USB to my iMac running OS 10.5.4.
I have shared this printer in the Sharing Panel of the iMac.
My PowerBook sees the printer & can select it, but when I go to print a document it says it is unable to connect to iMac port 621.. then times out.
I have updated all software & restarted.
    Any other ideas?

i have this same problem. i have a "shared" printer (HP aio 5610) that worked before under OS x 10.5.4 and earlier. my host is a mac mini with USB to the HP 5610. i print from the mini or one of my two laptops that connect to the mini via Airport.
now i am using 10.5.5 and suddenly my other laptops (i have a mac book air and ibook) both cannot connect to the HP 5610. they can "see it" for sure but printing times out just like DanofSled says on port 630 with eventual timeout.
these laptops "share" the HP all-in-one via wireless airport extreme network. all worked fine before 10.5.5. only good for printing, no all-in-one functions though (known issue).
i have repaired permissions, reset printers on all macs, reinstalled HP software, installed HP driver pac, reinstalled 10.5.5 via download combo update, switched on and off the printer, used different USB, reset CUPS (a tip i came across but didnt work). i strongly suspect 10.5.5 broke the shared printing.
Satellites can see the HP 5610 everytime i reset the printers.
under system pref/ printers/default i CAN see the HP5610 and the correct location. BUT now it says "Print using: Generic PostScript Printer" as the actual HP driver is not on that laptop.... it can take a long long time (4 min) to allow you to add this printer, but once it does, the Printer shows up in "Print and Fax" under "System Preferences" just fine. as normal i "Add" the printer to the sattelite and theoretically it is now shared. But its not!
the host mac mini still works fine for printing and scanning.
however, now, under 10.5.5 the satellite laptops (airport) wont print. their own (satellite) print queue will accept the job, but it will eventually time out. the host mac-mini will never show the job on its own host print queue. clearly there is no connection.
NOTE: Under the satellites' print queue(s), you can select Printer/Network Diagnostics... and this shows an error at "server", the last light. the message says....
" Network Diagnostics was able to connect to the Internet, but not the server "HP Officejet 5600 series at XXX Mac mini.ipp.tcp.local". This could be caused by problems with the server or an Internet problem between the computer and server."
my printer is hooked as it always was. directly USB to the host Mac-mini, and "shared" via Airport to my two laptops.
anyone know what is up? reverting back to 10.5.X will be difficult

  • Printing on a shared printer from our new iPad on our home network

How can I send a print job to a shared printer on our home network?  The iPad uses this network's WiFi capability.

It depends on the printer. iOS devices can only print directly to AirPrint printers. All AirPrint printers are wireless but not all wireless printers are capable of using AirPrint.
To print directly from an iPad / iPhone you will need an AirPrint compatible printer or another device to act as a print server. That can be a Mac computer running Printopia ($19.95 with free trial) or handyPrint (donation - supported). The Mac must be "on" but may be asleep for them to work. Equivalent PC options may exist but you're on your own finding them.
You can also buy this standalone print server:
    http://www.lantronix.com/it-management/xprintserver/xprintserver.html
These options enable you to use any printer available to your network, even older ones that may predate AirPrint by decades.
Otherwise you will need to buy an AirPrint printer or multifunction device.

  • HT2275 Sharing Printer from one MacBook to another

I am trying to share a printer from one MacBook to another. One machine is running OS 10.9.1, the other is running 10.7.5. In the "Add Printers" dialog box of System Preferences, no shared printers on my home network are appearing on the 10.9 machine. What do I do to get them to appear?

In System Preferences / Sharing, make sure you have checked Printer Sharing on both computers.

  • Problem to print from a Shared Printer from Win XP

    Hi,
I tried to print from a Photosmart C4180 that is directly connected via USB to a PC on XP and set as a Shared Printer. I am able to see the printer inside the network and add the printer, but unfortunately, the kind is a Generic Postscript Printer, and doesn't recognize that it's a HP Photosmart C4180. I installed the installation disk of HP and well... it didn't improve. Even if I try to print, I received an connection error. The Photosmart C4180 isn't inside the printer list of Mac OS and there, I'm stuck!
    Can someone help me?
    Thanks in advance,

    Hi,
After some searches and helpful info, I finally did it and I will share the steps with you to save time for everyone:
STEP 1: Add the TCP/IP print server service (FROM XP)

STEP 4: Add the printer on your Mac)
    1- Open the System Preferences
    2- Select "Print & Fax"
    3- Click "+" to add a printer
    4- Click More Printers...
5- Click on the drop-down menu Workgroup to select your private network,
once you reach the designated computer, you must enter your username
and password that you use on your XP computer, click OK and then finally
    select the printer.
6- For the printer model, you must select the Photosmart P1100 + Gimp-
    Print.
7- Click OK and you are ready to print finally!!!
    Have a nice day!

  • Finding shared printer from pc

form pc i'm trying to find printer on mac which is on a network. i have another imac which is connected to the network printer, so i know it's on the network.
when i go to add printer on pc and go to select a shared printer by name i type in \\owensmac\\HP_Laserjet_M1319f_MFP
when i click browse, it takes me into the computers on my network. not sure where to go from here?  i'm not 100% sure i'm typing in the name of the printer correctly in the address field
as the name of the printer has spaces in it.
any suggestions or links to go to. i've been on the internet for an hour or two searching for answers with no luck.
    thanks

i tried running the cups admin page  http://127.0.0.1:631 but get this message.
    Web Interface is Disabled
The web interface is currently disabled. Run "cupsctl WebInterface=yes" to enable it.
i'm not to savy on coding so i don't want to screw this up.
when i copy and pasted               Run "cupsctl WebInterface=yes"
Run: command not found came up.
I did another search for the WEB INTERFACE IS DISABLED error and this code came up
    sudo cupsctl WebInterface=yes
not sure wether quotes are included or not and or the word Run
when i typed this code i received a warning about making sure the code was correct and that incorrect code could mess my computer files up.
cups seems to be the way to go with getting the info i need.
    thanks

  • How do i print from an imac (lion) to a windows 7 shared printer?

I have been struggling to get my imac to print to a windows 7 (64bit) shared printer.  my other windows machines work just fine.   the imac finds it as a shared printer but then it just sticks at spooling with 82 bytes in the queue at the windows machine.   i have searched around and tried all the options suggested but have got no further.   Apple support wont help (its a new imac).

    At last after much searching (i see i am not alone !) i found the best solution to my problem;
    insert USB stick
    copy file to usb stick
    remove usb stick
insert usb stick in windows 7 machine
    print file.
crazy and stupid i know but i really cant be bothered trying to find another solution
i had been led to believe apples just worked clearly not the case!
no please dont tell me this is a windows issue as it is not!
windows and linus machines print to the shared printer just fine.

  • Faulty, noisy grey prints from LR 2.6 64-bit, Windows 7 64-bit, HP B9180

I've been using Lightroom for about a year, and recently retired my old Windows XP 32-bit system and built a brand new AMD Quad-core Windows 7 64-bit PC. The C: drive is a brand new Kingston V+ SSD 128GB, supplemented by a 1TB SATA3 WD Caviar Black D: drive. My LR Catalog resides on the SSD C: drive (carried over from the old system), though my photo storage is on a LaCie 1TB eSATA disk. I currently have 4GB of DDR3 high-quality RAM (I do plan to add more) and run a largely trouble-free HP Photosmart Pro B9180 printer via USB 2.0 cable. My catalog and photos are all nicely intact onscreen, but I have the following problem when I use the Print Module:
Prints from Lightroom 2.6 64-bit for Win 7 (a fresh install) come out of the printer as large fields of grey noise (!) They are quite difficult to describe, but they are absolutely not a simple profile problem in any way that I can imagine. That is, the entire printed photo is grey noise (actually quite a bit of chroma noise as well on close viewing) but perfectly white borders if the print is set up for borders . If the photo has any very white highlight or very dark/black shadow areas, those portions do appear in the print as white highlights or red shadows, respectively. Other than those extreme highlight and shadow areas, the print is absolutely unrecognizable, appearing as only greyish chroma noise. ????
This problem is true for all of the follwing situations:
Whether the source file is .JPG or Canon RAW
Whether I print on Glossy Advanced or Plain Paper
Whether I print in Best, Normal, or FastDraft mode (from the printer driver)
Whether I try Application Managed  Color, Printer Managed Color, or no color management at all
The one exception to this problem occurs only when I select the Draft Mode Printing checkbox in the LR Print Module and go on to print in draft mode. In this case only, I can get a recognizable print (a typical draft quality print is made without any other problems).
I do not have problems printing from Open Office, Firefox, or even full photo-output prints from Canon Digital Photo Professional of the same image files (without LR adjustments, naturally), nor did I have this problem printing in LR 2 32-bit on my old XP system (It may have been version 2.5 the last print I made, however).
I have already perfomed a "repair-install" of a freshly downloaded LR 2.6 64-bit installer, yet the problem remains. I have not yet tried to completely remove LR before reinstalling. I have not yet reinstalled my HP 64-bit printer drivers, as the problem was limited to Lightroom.  Happy to post images if helpful (I'm new here, I'll have to check the rules and instructions).
Have not found anyone else with this problem in my searches. Any help would be greatly appreciated, as this is extremely disruptive to my workflow and revenue stream
    Camron
EDIT: Photo of comparison prints: Canon DPP on left, LR 2.6 on right (same image file)

Thanks for the suggestions.  I have tried each idea in the order suggested. Unfortunately I have not yet solved the problem.  In some circumstances, with certain paper profiles and no other color management in place, I get faulty prints but they have large areas of solid color in areas where there is a large amounts of color saturation in the original image. The faulty image below is printed to plain letter-sized paper ar Normal Quality. One clarification I wish to make is that my HP printer driver was not specifically a 64-bit driver, but rather 32-bit/64-bit driver compatable for Win 7.
I may try completely uninstalling LR before reinstalling, instead of a "repair-install" but I am still open to other suggestions.

  • Wireless printing from mixed Mac (10.6) and Windows 7 network

My wife's five-year-old iBook is on its last legs and her demands just don't justify dropping a grand on a Macbook, sadly. I'm looking at a $500 Wintel laptop running Windows 7 Home. Will she be able to print to the printers connected to the AX without upsetting my connection through a MBP?

Mac prints. PC does not. Bonjour Printer Wizard found the printer, so there's some communication between the two (although the printer never came on, but I assume the AX knows what it’s plugged into).
One odd thing is that, after installing the printer driver (downloaded from Brother), Bonjour Printer Wizard listed Brother as a printer manufacturer three times, only one of which shows the HL-2040.
The las time I tried printing from Windows the printer turned on, but did not print.

  • Printing from Editor in PSE 8 on Windows 7

When I try to print from the editor I get a message stating that I must install a printer first.  My printers are installed.  When I go to the organizer I can print without getting this message.  How do I fix this problem?

On a MAC it does seem to stick on the last option you saved e.g. Jpeg if it was a Jpeg image.
For windows, this seems to work:
Find the file PhotoshopElementsEditor.exe using explorer (in the C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 8.0 folder) right click on that file and choose Run As Administrator.
Go back to the editor, open an image, select Save for Web and choose jpeg; then save that file. The next time you run the editor and use the save for web command the jpeg type should hopefully stick as the default.
