Trouble starting Apache after 1022 install

I can not start Oracle HTTP server after a new install of iAS 1.0.2.2 on NT.
I get following error when I try to start:
Syntax error on line 298 of d:/oracle/isuites/apache/apache/conf/httpd.conf:
Port must be numeric
Note the errors or messages above, and press the <ESC> key to exit.
During the installation, when installing Apache, I got some error starting with "a runtime exception occurred..." and i continued.

I am almost sure that these kind of problems comes, because you had some thing left over in your system from the past installations. The best and only supported way to deinstall an Oracle 9i Application Server is to deinstall using the respective Oracle Universal Installer. After the de-installation if there are remnants of Oracle on your system you can follow the steps 2-6 to cleanup the system. In certain cases it is easier to deinstall manually. But to make sure the proper manual deinstall, one has to follow the steps mentioned below.
1. Stop all Oracle NT services. Before one could delete the files in Oracle Home, the user has to make sure that all the services associated with that particular Oracle Home is stopped. To get the services, navigate through Start - Settings - Control Panel - Services. This will list all the active services. Select the services associated with this particular Oracle Home and stop them all, one by one. Most of the Oracle Services contain the word Oracle in the service name. So it is easy to find the Oracle services.
2. Delete Oracle Home(s). This should be done only after performing step 1. Here we are taking the assumption that all the files get installed to Oracle Home. This manual deinstall steps may not be suitable for products getting installed outside Oracle Home.
3. Delete Oracle Directory in Program Files.
Delete the directory and all it's files created under C:\Program Files\Oracle.
4. Delete the Registry entries. To edit the registry, run the program "regedit.exe". Expand the tree a) Delete the ORACLE key under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE - SOFTWARE
b) Delete the registry entries associated with the Win NT Services created by Oracle 9i Application Server. They are under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE - SYSTEM - ControlSet001 -Services
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE - SYSTEM - ControlSet002 -Services
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE - SYSTEM - CurrentControlSet -Services
All the NT services are listed here. As mentioned above, most of the Oracle Services contain the word Oracle in the service name.
5. Delete the path variables created. In Win NT, this can be done by right clicking "My Computer" and select properties. This will open a window called "System Properties"
Select the Environment tab and update the PATH variable to remove the Oracle Home entry or any other entries created for the Oracle 9i Application Server Product you are deinstalling.
6. Finally restart the machine. This is very much required if any NT services are deleted.

Check that you do not run Firefox as Administrator. 
Right-click the Firefox desktop shortcut and choose "Properties". 
Make sure that all items are deselected in the "Compatibility" tab of the Properties window. 
* Privilege Level: "Run this program as Administrator" should not be selected 
* "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" should not be selected 
Also check the Properties of the firefox.exe program in the Firefox program directory.

Trouble starting Apache OHS

New installation of Oracle 11.1 on Dell RHEL/Linux box. Installed Oracle OHS from here into a separate ORACLE_HOME (=db OH/apex).
opmnctl startall starts up opmn but times out on starting Apache OHS httpd. No errors in HTTP_Server~1.log, the last line is simply execing httpd. More surprisingly, no warning/error messages in ohs/logs/error_log, nothing. opmnctl just hangs for a while and comes back with "time out while waiting for a managed process to start". And then I see the opmn process and one httpd process but port 7780 doesn't respond to requests.
Never had any trouble with this before. Everything seems to be setup right but OHS just doesn't want to startup.

No, I am not running SSL. My opmn.xml is the default one, no changes.
OK I found the problem. I did a strace -f opmnctl startall and saw that it was waiting on a blocking read on */dev/random*. Some googling on this shows that an insufficient entropy pool (my poolsize had dropped by 62, below the threshold of 64) is a known issue on headless Linux servers due to the lack of truly random activity like mouse and keyboard movement. All this stuff is new to me, it gets really bizarre, thought I was in a physics class. There are some "entropy generating" tools out there but it looked like overkill to me since I am not running a military grade installation. I simply did rm -f /dev/random;ln -s /dev/urandom /dev/random. /dev/urandom generates random numbers of lesser quality but it doesn't block readers. With this fix in place, opmnctl stopall/startall works fine again. Whew, this was a strange problem.

Trouble starting CentOS after installing XE

After tackled XE on Window XP and 10g DS, I moved on to Linux. I installed CentOS 4.2, and everything seemed to work fine. Then I installed 10g XE with Start XE when CentOS boots up. Everything seemed to be fine, and I was able to login through the XE home page as system. Then I turned off the computer and went to sleep. Next day when I started the computer, my CentOS wouldn't boot. It stopped after:
Checking SWAP Spaces [OK]
The cursor was blinking...forever! The sad thing was I had to switched the power off to stop everything. I am a newbie to Linux. Did I miss something? Somebody help please?!

I don't run CentOS (but I admire this OS as being one of the best). When your boot-screen comes up, I assume it offeres you a choice between Cent and Windows. However does it ALSO offer a choice for Cent in "safe mode" or "rescue"? If so pick that and see if you can at least get into CentOS.
One note... on a lot of Linux systems they set the 'timer' on the boot screen to like 5 seconds... meaning if you don't make a choice it boots to the default (usually the first choice.) The way to stop the clock is to use the down-arrow key immediately when you see the boot-screen pop up.

and you have to hit a F key. Select "resuce' or "safe" etc. if given a choice. Hitting any F key should stop the timer.

IPhoto won't start up after archive & install

Hi all.
Recently I had to perform an archive & install after the System>Library>System Resources folder got trashed. I did this as it sometimes gets corrupted and cause the iMac to constantly wake from sleep. Previously the folder always restored itself, but not this last time. See this old thread for more details:

My wife actually did the archive & install. We had been running Mac OS X 10.6.3, reverted back to 10.5.6 and then I upgraded back to 10.6 (the iMac came with both OSes) and then downloaded the combi update to 10.6.3 again.

It looks like something is missing. Any ideas as to how to fix this?
Also we now seem to have doubles of many Apple apps, originals that were saved from before the archive & install and new ones from reinstalling the OS. Perhaps this is related to the problems? The other apps I have tried so far seem OK though.

You need to re-install iPhoto as it is missing that iLife Slideshow component.
To re-install iPhoto
1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2. Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name
3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.

G5 won't start up after RAM installed

I added 2 512meg Kingston RAM to the computer on Thursday. No issues, worked fine on Friday, and this morning. (I will have turned the computer on and off several times over the three days).
Whilst running Nikon Coolsan V and cleaning up the finder, the computer froze. After a few minutes I did a restart by holding start button.
Computer will not restart. The computer will not start with the Tiger CD or in Target mode.
I reset SMU, no change.
I removed the new RAM, reset SMU again, computer still will not start up.
Attempted to reset PRAM, but nothing happened, and computer did not restart.
The computer powers up, makes start up noise, etc. as per normal for about 5 seconds, and then nothing happens.
I have also tried removing all the the RAM, and installing again in pairs. No change.
At this point the computer does not even spin up to the apple screen (which it did the first few times after the crash).
It has two internal hard drives, both of which should be bootable.
Any ideas or suggestions?

You need Disk Warrior from Alsoft. Your directory is kaput.
Pull the data cable, pull the drive. A damaged directory can actually prevent booting from DVDs.
When a system freezes, don't just assume you can reboot and go back to work.

MacBook Pro Won't Start up after leopard Install

I installed leopard on my MacBook Pro 2.0 GHz Intel Core Duo. Well at the end during the restarting phase it took forever to restart and my power was running out so not sure if it restarted or batt went dead. After recharging i turned on mac and wont boot up past the apple with dots hovering it. Don't know much about macs so if you could help it would be appreciated.

You installed Leopard on battery power? That's a real big no no. A very risky gamble at best.
If your battery died during install, you may well have totally hosed the system.
After recharging i turned on mac and wont boot up past the apple with dots hovering it. Don't know much about macs so if you could help it would be appreciated.
See if you can boot into the Leopard DVD (hold down "C" on boot) and after the language screen, on the top left will be a menu. Select Utilities, run Disk Utility and repair your HD and permissions.
See if that gets you somewhere.

looks like you are trying to mix/match 32 and 64bit apache and php. need to use both at the 32 or 64.

Why does my mouse pointer keep freezing after I don't use it for just a few seconds? It seems like this started shorty after I installed 10.8.3

This is very very annoing and needs a software fix IMMEDIATELY APPLE!

I have this exact problem as well on my retina MBP 15" with 10.8.4. It's been going on at least since 10.8.3, but I'm unsure about anything before that since I bought this machine brand new in April. It's happened around 5 times during my ownership of it.
I read the solution you found (you mentioned this in another comment) about, but I had none of those LaunchServices/Daemons that people were talking about.
The freezing of the trackpad only seems to occur while using Safari, but it may be because I use Safari a lot that I'm drawn to that conclusion. Anyway, I haven't seen anything in Console.app about it.

This guy also think it's Safari. I suspect it could even be a Safari extension.
I have these extensions installed, all activated:
* AdBlock 2.6.0
* ClickToPlugin 2.8.4
* 1Password 3.9.19
* DuckDuckGo 1.4.1
* Reddit Enhancement Suite 4.1.2
Of these, the DuckDuckGo extension was added last, and it's also my main suspect. It has an "Answer on right click" option in the settings. I don't know if it's possible that it could be interfering with the trackpad or its driver, but maybe.
If that's not it, I'm guessing corrupt caches or something like that.
OK now, this is what I've tried:
* Repair permissions
* Booting with Cmd+Opt+P+R
This is what I plan to try, individually:
* Run a tool like Maintenance to delete all caches and rebuild LaunchServices database.
* Disable Safari extensions individually for a week or two each.
* Switch to Firefox for a while.
* Remove .plist files relating to trackpad. I do not know which these are yet.

Compressor quits upon start up after Shake install...

Hello,
I'nm using a quad G5 with 2.5 gig of memory.
I've been using compressor with the FCP 5.0 suite for a long time. This machine is my livelyhood and it's been just about flawless.
Yesterday, I bought and intalled Shake. Afer a few hours of practice I went back into FCP to do some client work. Having fixed the issues in FCP I naturally went to compress my clients stuff for authoring.
Amost immediatly upon start up the program crashes.
What gives??

I must take this time to express my disapointment that after buying a quad G5, the Final Cut Pro Suite, all the stuff for my production company, and then finally Shake; after all the thousands I've spent, I've still got to spent I've got to spend more to make two programs made by Apple, get along with one another, on my Apple computer. MY GAWD!!
This is crap. Sure I'll buy the upgrade, but I can tell you that Apple has lost first right of refusal when it comes to my next purchase. Very disapointing to say the least.
Again, thanks for the info, I sure wish the 'brain trust' at the Apple Store would have clued me in when I was telling them about my set up and what I would be doing with Shake. I sure wish I could use to Apple programs without getting 'Jobed' into BUYING an upgrade. I sure wish I this delema would not have occured with client money on the line. I don't understand:
My spatial data does not use projection (the SRIDs are 262148).
What is 262148? It is an SRID that isn't in the 8.1.7.4 database.
If the SRID isn't an issue, you might want to make sure the coordinate
system bounds of the geometries match if your data is coming from two
different tables and they both have quadtree indexes built on them.
If the coordinate system bounds don't match, then you can see this kind of problem.

PS 11 Elements keeps crashing in start up (after first install)

I tried clearing the preferences. Not sure if that is working because the program crashes as I am deleting the preferences.
I only have one printer driver

Trouble starting itunes after installation

I've downloaded the latest version of itunes. Message says installed. When I click on the desktop icon I get the following message 'The procedure entry point AVCFPlayerAppliesMediaSelectionCriteriaAutomaticallyKey could not be located in the Dynamic Link Library AVFoundationCF.dll' When I click ok on that message another mesage is underneath that box saying 'Itunes was not installed correctly. Please reinstall Itunes. Error 7(windows error 127)

That error seems to be generated when Apple Application Support isn't properly updated to version 3.0. Try uninstalling Apple Application Support from the programs and features control panel. If it won't uninstall try repairing it, then if that is successful try uninstalling again. If that works then the main iTunes installer should be able to repair the installation.
