Trouble switching user accounts
In 10.6.2 I am encountering problems when switching between user accounts. Once I get a "semi-transparent blue" screen of death in the middle of a switch. Just now the Finder repeatedly locked up and then wouldn't let me log out. Relaunching the Finder led to repeated spinning beach balls. I've had to force my computer (6-month-old 15" MBP) to shut down three times in the last two days.
Anyone else having similar issues?
So far I've had more problems with Snow Leopard than with any OS X release I can remember.
Some or all of the following may be necessary - try in this order:
1. Try resetting your PRAM/NVRAM ( http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379?viewlocale=en_US ). If everything isn't fixed, then continue to follow the steps here including resetting your SMC ( http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411 ) if necessary.
2. Use Font Book to eliminate all bad and duplicate fonts.
3. Reinstall (or install for the first time) the .6.1 and .6.2 updates by downloading and installing the combo updater ( http://support.apple.com/kb/DL959 ).
4. Reinstall 10.6 using your Snow Leopard install DVD by installing Snow over Snow using the upgrade method. Test your system after returning to 10.6. If is good there, then you may not want to re-install the.6.1 & .6.2 updates - if you do, then use the combo updater again ( http://support.apple.com/kb/DL959 ).
Still no joy, take it to an Apple Store and ask staff there for assistance.

Safari 4 Crashes At Start-Up - Works When I Switch User Accounts - Help!
Safari 4 Crashes At Start-Up - However Safari Works When I Switch User Accounts to a minimalistic non-admin acct with zero log-in items. I'm not sure how to best troubleshoot this. My log in items are minimal- LaunchBar, Google Desktop, CopyPaste Pro - that's about it. I tried deleting some various prefs and plists but don't know how to approach it.
Any suggestions? Thanks (Hawaiian Starman - you helped someone else recently with this problem - I followed your advice but could not duplicate her successful results. The log of my crash is as follows - I'll add a second post if the whole thing doesn't fit.

Monitor settings lost when switching user accounts.
Hi! I just recently noticed that every time i switch user accounts, my monitor settings get corrupted.
There are 2 user accounts in my ibook. One account is used for work while the other one is used for home purposes. The work account has a specific monitor setting which is calibrated to our workstations. The other account has default settings on it.
My question is that when I switch users, the settings for my work account gets corrupted. I also can't change the settings without having to restart the book.
I already repaired permissions and zapped the pram. The same thing still happens.
Thanks in advance!Hello Chuck!
I've had this problem too. Like you, I managed to navigate to do a restart, but nothing else would make the mouse cursor reappear.
Bruce, I wasn't using Biggy, PinPoint or any of the other mouse visibility things, simply the magnification provided by System Preferences.
I put it down to a fault on 10.4.4—a very buggy release— and haven't yet been able to reproduce it on 10.4.5.
I suggest you send a fault report to Apple ([email protected]), explaining all the circumstances. Try always undoing the cursor zoom before switching users (yes, that's a pain too!!!). And if I manage to reproduce the problem, I promise I'll send in a fault report too!

Trouble switching users when Chrome in open.
Hello all. I'm a new to Mac user and have discovered an annoying problem. When I attempt to switch users on my MacBook Air while I Google Chrome open the system seems to get stuck. The menu bar disappears and I cannot access Finder. I can still open other applications (and use them) but I seem to have lost the ability to use the menu bar associated with Finder or even access Finder until after I reboot the system using the power button and logging back into my user account.
Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks.Sorry Becky
It is what it is. And the unfortunate fact is that what it is is a pretty decent shot, but it is far from perfect. Heck, Captivate doesn't even capture and recognize some of its OWN dialogs correctly.
The only workaround I'm aware of is to edit the captions afterward.
Cheers... Rick

Trouble creating user accounts
I am looking for some help in establishing a Administrative user account for my wife. Mysteriously, the dock on the new account contains only question marks (except for Quicktime, Finder & Trash), the application folder is nearly empty, system preferences will not open, the menu bar is preconfigured with item icons that are turned off or unused (ie: Bluetooth, internal modem) --- the whole thing is screwy. Meanwhile, my original Admin account is fully functional and customized. I'm stymied. Any suggestions?
Additionally, is there a way to change the short name on my original user account?
iBook Mac OS X (10.4.5)Delete the new account (see Help), reinstall the 10.4.5 COMBO update, update to 10.4.6, restart, repair permissions, restart, and try again. Something's hosed in the new account creation process.

HT3309 Why do settings & preferences reset on new fast switch user account?
I've recently added 2 users to my Mac. Everytime one of them signs out or we switch away from her account to some other user's account, all her preferences and settings erase. For example, she adds an application icon to the dock, then it disappears. Or she sets Mail to not collapse conversations, then it recollapses conversations. I suspect this is a permissions issue, but I don't know how to cure it. Any suggestions? Thanks!
I don't think rename is the problem, but it can mistakenly be done by simply hihlighting that home folder in the Finder & renaming like any other file/folder, but it's a no-no.
Log into one of the Problem Accounts in Safe mode...
Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
Then move these files to the Desktop for now...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
Reboot & test.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive. -
NoClassDefFoundError when I switch user accounts
I've written a program in my own account. It works find. However when I try to execute it using a different account I get the following error:
C:\Bryan\sampledir>c:\j2sdk-1.4.2\j2sdk1.4.2\bin\java ncri.DemoMaker
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: ncri/DemoMaker
I'm using Windows XP. I tried setting permissions of all files to "Full Control" for the account I'm using but it hasn't fixed the problem. Does anyone have any ideas?
Cheers
BryanIt might be that you have a user Classpath for the account that works and a different user Classpath for the other account. If you look at the Environmental Variables, you should be able to see the difference. You probably can make the Classpath a system variable.
To see the Environmental Variables, go to Control Panel, open System, select Advanced tab and click on Environmental Variables. -
Will switching User Accounts on my iPhone 4s delete my aps and data?
I need to remove my iPhone from an existing Apple ID and associate it with another, existing, Apple ID. Will all of my data and Aps dissapear? Is this similar to a complete reset of the device?
If you did not sign out of your Apple ID in theory the new owner could use your account. However, they would also have to know your password in order to use the account.
What do you mean by you can't buy apps on your new iPad? That is such a broad statement. You are not signed into your account in Settings>Store? The new owner tried to use the Apple ID and and your account was disabled?
I would get in touch with the new owner if you have concerns. You will need to work this out somehow. I suppose that you could wipe the device using Find My iPad if it's not too late and all of the conditions for doing so are still in place. -
Using same Aperture 3 library with different user accounts. Suggestions?
My wife and I share the same iMac but use different user accounts. Currently, I have our photos and Aperture library on a second partition with no ownership, allowing us both to access the library and edit, reorganize, etc (I know we need to be careful not to make changes "simultaneously," so we simply shut one instance down before switching user accounts). The trick is quickly becoming the organizational scheme. My wife thinks (and I agree) that Aperture will be able to free us from having to "give in" to the other's way of thinking when it comes to grouping pictures in projects, etc. The only trick is, we can't figure out how to do it. My initial thought is to figure if one photo can exist in two different projects and then just have "hers" and "his" folders. The other thought would be to create two different libraries, but then I'm not sure how we would keep the two libraries "current" if one uploaded photos and didn't tell the other.
So, those are my two thoughts, but I'm sure there are others. I'm open to any and all suggestions.1 Quit iTunes.
2 Drag your entire *iTunes folder* from /Username/Music to /Users/Shared.
3 Log out.
1 Log in on your other account(s).
2 Start iTunes and immediately press an hold the Option key.
3 iTunes will ask to *Create new library* or *Choose existing library*. Select *Choose existing library*.
4 Select the *iTunes library file* in the *iTunes folder* in /Users/Shared.
5 Now go to File -> *Add to library* and select the *iTunes music folder* located in /Username/Music.
6 - iTunes will add all the music in from this account to the main iTunes music folder/library.
7 Delete the *iTunes folder* in /Username/Music
8 Restart iTunes normally (don't hold Option). Everything should be there.
9 Quit iTunes and log out of the account.
10 Do the above steps for all users. Don't do the first 1-3 steps. Start at the second series.
Log into your account, start iTunes normally and all music should be there.
Whenever any of you do anything in iTunes, it will be seen by all since you are using one and the same iTunes library file.
Create a "main" playlist for each user with their own music. Create a smart playlist and set it to Playlist is not the playlist you created above. Select this and it will show you everything NOT in your playlist. Do the same for the others. This will help when adding only the music you want your own playlist.
Note that iTunes can only be opened by one user at a time. If you have Fast user switching enabled, the other users must quit iTunes in order for anyone else to use it. -
Enterprise Role grants in jazn-data fail for AD Provider User Accounts?
Hello All,
I have enterprise roles defined within my jazn-data.xml for my 11.1.1.4 web application. We just recently switched user accounts over to an active directory provider for authentication. So, I have user accounts associated with the active directory provider that are assigned to my enterprise roles. This is working fine because all of my EL expressions of the form #{securityContext.userInRole['EnterpriseRoleName']} are working great.
However, all of the grants in jazn-data.xml for pages that should only be viewable by users with this role are now not working. Users with this role see a "Internal Server 500" error with the message "oracle.adf.controller.security.AuthorizationException: ADFC-0619: Authorization check failed", rather than the related pages. This all used to work when the user accounts were not coming from the active directory provider.
As a work around, I've had to grant test-all view access to all pages, but hide controls and portions of pages that non-authorized users should see using EL like what I printed above.
This can't be right. Why are AD user accounts treated differently by WebLogic Server, when the security context indicates that the user has the proper role?
ThanksHaha... nice one. This is a low-key production app that is internal to this company. I can't have users with AD accounts, who used to have WLS internal accounts when the jazn grants worked, just stop using the application until some solution comes about. It may take days. I don't understand why you would leave such an unhelpful comment and then leave the discussion. Is this a precedence that you want set within your forum? Please help me to understand why this is a bad workaround. I'm just at the beginning of trying to figure out the root cause of this issue. A search didn't reveal any obvious answers, so I thought I'd reach out to my knowledgeable ADF friends on the forum to see if this was something that could easily be fixed.
Back to your comment -- why is this a mistake? I have always used the rendered attribute value to hide navigation points to pages that are supposed to be accessible to users with the enterprise role (e.g. rendered="#{securityContext.userInRole['EnterpriseRoleName']}"). This still works fine in the context of this problem, because the security context is working properly -- it's picking up user membership to enterprise roles. It's the jazn grants that are not working for the AD provider related users.
In this context, if some really smart user guesses the URL of a page I don't want them on because they don't have the role, then why can't I simply set rendered="#{securityContext.userInRole['EnterpriseRoleName']}" on the PGL that presents the body of the page? The content of the page isn't rendered. That's the point of the "rendered" attribute, right? Better yet, I could have a nice message that says that aren't authorized to view the page, rather than put a Java stack trace in their face. Why, then, as a temporary workaround, is this such a bad idea?
Thank you "sameera.sac" for the links. I'd seen the first one before posting and it wasn't pertinent. But I'll certainly research the others you provided.

Using computer account & user account together?
Hi,
I would like to do it to get more control on preferences.
1.do you get any trouble using user account and computer together? is it doable?
2.Also, is there any faster way then entering mac address by hand in WGM?
ThanksReplying to this since it is related...
We just upgraded servers and our lab clients to 10.5 over the summer. importing the preferences from the 10.4 OD setup, we had dock preferences for the computer lists, that previously combined with dock settings for our user groups. Since the computer lists are now groups in 10.5, is there no way to combine preferences for a user group and a computer group? Checking the checkbox for combine with User's dock in the computer group or user group just adds the generic OSX icon dock to the managed dock.
It just makes it annoying for the different images on the different computers in the school since some might have office 04, some 08, while some apps we had for students on all machines would have the same file path for dock purposes.
We also have a lot of emacs and ibooks still running 10.4, I haven't had a chance to look at dock preference combining for those clients yet. -
Windows moving and shrinking when switching users in Mavericks
My wife and son share the same macbook air. When they switch user accounts, often windows are mysteriously moved and made into a smaller size. Seems like some kind of glitch. Is this happening to other people?
Hi there.
I had a similar problem with the Dock. Try my solution mentioned here (use Terminal to 'kill' the Dock).
https://discussions.apple.com/message/26090676#26090676
Killing the Dock might be enough to bring everything else back into line (your background picture looks similar to how mine used to look -- cut off).

Have to reconnect to airport when switching users
Recently I set up my HP printer to print via wireless rather than USB connection.
Ever since then, if users are switched, or if the computer is waking for sleep, I have to reselect my airport network from the menu.
Under "Network" system preferences, under "Network Port Configurations," Airport is at the top of the list and is the only connection with a checkmark.
In the same preference pane, under "Airport", I have the following 2 options selected:
--Automatically join an open network
--Remember any network this computer has joined
Any ideas how to fix this? Basically just an annoyance at this point--it's not like it drops while you are using it.

On Safari, How do I switch to another user account?
But the hiccup is that I can't launch Safari. I wanna try and test another user account for trouble shooting purposes. But the question is, how do I switch if I can't launch it? Anyone out there in the universe have an idea?
Would appreciate the help.
Thanks!
- MichaelIf you can't launch Safari, that probably means it's crashing on launch. Launch the Console application and look under "User Diagnostic Reports" for crash logs related to Safari, WebProcess, or PluginProcess. Select the most recent one and post the contents -- the text, please, not a screenshot.
These instructions may not apply if you're really on 10.4 as your profile says.
