OS Vista - I know- when I can afford it
Errors:
Apple Mobile Device Service stopped working and was closed
followed by
This iPhone cannot be used because the AMDS is not started
YES - I have started and set to automatic all apple related apps in "Computer Management"
YES - I have uninstalled then reinstalled anything that was made by Apple.inc - several times
The iphone will sync with another laptop running vista.

Any better luck with the new version of itunes (9.1.1.11) just released today, doha? (It includes an update to AMDS and the Apple Mobile Device Service, so fingers crossed that might address your issue.)

As stated no matter how hard i try i CANNOT get apps to appear in my sidebar library menu so i can update them through itunes.Has only happened since last update of itunes .Really wish i hadn't updated as i have never had an issue b4.Spent most of day on fone to apple yesterday as the update created an issue that meant i could not sync at all.Anyway thanks to 'james' in arizona we sorted the first piece of trouble the update created .(sortof).

I've looked at lots of posts re this and tried all the suggestions but just cannot get the magic 'apps' category to appear in my sidebar in itunes???
One suggestion was that the apps if clicked on would have an 'update ' button but all i can do is delete them
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated
(running osx 10.7.5 on MBP -slightly tricky cos i also run windows in a 'bootcamped' partition.Mind u itunes etc is in mac partition and has been working fine for the last 10 years!!!!!!!!!)I'm going to assume that you use only one Apple ID so the two things that I can think of are to quite all processes and restart all devices and then try to sync those apps again. Quit iTunes, restart your computer and the iPad and then try to sync the apps again.
The other thing would be to try to reset your iTunes account by signing in and out of the account on the iPad. Settings>Store>Apple ID - tap the ID and sign out. Restart the iPad and then sign in to your account and try again. -
IPhone apps not opening - have tried all the usual fixes
A few days ago I got my iPhone unlocked from my provider (Telstra) as I am about to travel and wanted to put a country specific sim in it. Since then no non-Apple apps have worked.
I have tried (many times) to :-
1. restore from a previous backup (plus multiple syncs) and using different backups
2. delete an app and reinstall it
3. download a new free app (and when that didn't work I deleted it and retried installing it)
4. sign in and out of the app store on the iphone
5. sign in and out of the app store on my iMac
6. de-authorise and re-authorise my iMac
7. wipe the iPhone clean and start with a fresh install
8. And reset the device too many times.
Nothing I have found on any site has worked. I thought the wipe the phone clean would have done it but it hasn't.I have wasted about 20 hours trying to get this thing working again.
If I wasn't going on vacation tomorrow I would be at my provider getting them to fix their mess but I can't.
Can anyone help? Please?

(Apps are active - just won't stay open)Further - the AppleId I am using is the one I first started with years ago - where all my music and app purchases have been made. Signing out of this AppleId and then signing in using my "me.com" address and downloading an app under this address allows the new app (and only the new app) to work. And it continues to work when I sign out and sign back in with the original AppleId.
This is really annoying as I have heaps of paid apps that aren't working. -
I have a 3rd Generation ipod touch that is not recognized by itunes or my computer. My itunes works with other apple devices I own. I cannot reset the ipod touch and can never get to the screen where it is supposed to show a red battery to turn it off. I can't reset it. Have tried to use the suggestions on the apple site to no avail. Any suggestions ?
From my experience, the only way you're gonna get a PC afflicted with this disease to work with a 5th gen nano is to roll back to an earlier version of iTunes. Those affected have been exhausted by this ongoing issue. To update or not to update? And I always say never update unless you have to, and turn off all that auto update mess!
I have two core2duo lappies running 32b vista. My workflow dictates 32b fyi. One is acer aspire running itunes v 11.1 (.0.126), 5th gen nano was originally formatted and works just fine on this machine to this day. My other is the bigger badder lenovo thinkpad and the 5th gen will NOT mount using any version of itunes past 11.0 (.1.12) Windows mounts it just fine. itunes is not having it. no shirt no shoes no service.
I have both a 4th and 5th gen nano. The 4th gen works great on both machines, I even successfully tested it with the latest version (11.1.5) before subsequent deletion on the thinkpad! Weird huh? I think my next experiment might be to restore my 5th gen w/ a Mac and theeeeen plug it into PC itunez.
I'm at a loss on the thinkpad. Scanned for intruders. Cut the Lenovo bloat. Executed system and reg maintenance. Took down msconfig to a safe mode + itunes level to attempt to resolve possible sw conflicts but to no avail. NO NO NO. Every single dang port, every time on the thinkpad. Has me feeling like others might get the same treatment by the next itunes update. :|
So in summary for me:
5th gen nano and thinkpad are a NoGo on 11.1^ last working version for me = 11.0.1
5th gen nano is working on an acer aspire 11.1.0 but no way in the world am I updating
4th gen nano is kicking 5th gen nano's @zz so what would make me want to buy a new ipod? -
Firefox does not prompt to save my tabs nor does it bring them back when it reopens. It does not even bring up my home page. I have tried the suggested fixes in the help section. This still happens in safe mode so I tried disabling plugins etc. - no change.

My apple tv quit working and I have done everythng listed on Apple's site as well as other help sites and nothing has fixed the problem. I have restarted and reset the apple tv, I have reinstalled itunes and I turned off and reset my router. All to no avail. Any suggetions?
Port is open and router recognizes the Apple TV. I noticed on the web that certain Apple TV's had problems and Apple was replacing the units. I am going to take the unit to the Apple Store and have the it checked to see if it is one of the units that don't work with the latest version of itunes.

French characters fail to display properly (have tried all the regular fixes)
I am updating a website with french characters and they are not displaying correctly. This website has been live for a long time and had no problems, but while updating some wording/punctuation on the development (before rolling it into live), I am seeing that my characters are failing. We recently bought CF Builder 2 and I believe this to be the problem, as I had something similar happen like this - but with an email blast - a while ago (I ended up having another worker develop the code on his PC with a different program).
I have googled this and have ensured the following settings are correct:
window-->preferences-->workspace--->text-file encoding: UTF-8
project-->properties-->general-->text-file encoding: UTF-8
I've also tried putting
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html;charset=UTF-8" >
at the top of my pages and they still display incorrect characters when french accents are used.
Any ideas?

Can't play purchased songs even on an authorized computer. I have tried all the fixes with no help.
I just recently purchased a new computer running Windows 7 64 bit. I downloaded the latest edition of itunes, and transfered all of my old itunes purchases from my XP computer onto this new computer. The problem that I am having is that I am being prompted for my password everytime I try to play purchases on this new computer, even though I get a message telling me that this computer is already authorized to play purchases under this account. Whenever I try to play the song, I keep getting this same message everytime I enter my password. It also seems I am unable to deauthorize the machines that were authorized using one of the old accounts that I made purchases on in the past. When I go into my itunes account under the username and try to "deauthorize all computers" nothing happens, and it still tells me that I have 5 out of the available 5 computers authorized, even after I try to deauthorize all of them. I have mainly noticed the problem on the older songs that I purchased. Most of the recently purchased songs don't re-prompt me for my password when trying to play them. I have tried all the suggested fixes on the support webpage such as deleting the "SC" folder and changing the security slider settings, but the problem keeps coming up. Can anyone offer a suggestion on how to fix this problem and how to try again to deauthorize all computers and then reauthorize this particular new computer running Windows 7? Thanks for the help!

i have a HP laptop, when i try to do certain things that require flash player it tells me i need to install the latest version so when i try it says its already installed. i have tried all the trouble shooting suggestions and it stll isnt working. I even checked the activex filtering and that doesn't seem to be the problem.

Sync not working for long time (have tried all the usual suggestions)
Sync stopped working for me months ago and I have not been able to get it to work again.
I'm using Firefox 26 on two different Linux laptops and want to keep the bookmarks and history synced with them. It worked great for a long time. Then around Firefox 25 or so it stopped working. In fact, I logged into an old Linux system I hadn't used in while that still runs Firefox 24 (or maybe it's 23) the other day and it synced great with my laptop I usually use.
I have tried all the suggestsion in the troubleshooting guide (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-sync-troubleshooting-and-tips). I tried unlinking all of my devices and linking them again. That worked to sync both laptops once, when I first relinked them, but never again. I tried creating entirely new profiles on both systems and that didn't help.
Is Sync just broken? Why does it continue to work fine in older version of Firefox but none of the last three versions or so? Is there any way to fix this?

I am not using a proxy server.
Neither system is syncing with the other. It seems like they are both uploading (backing up) the history and bookmarks properly, but then not merging and syncing the changes from the other system. I know things are getting uploaded, because as I said, my third system that I don't use much anymore, with the older version of Firefox, does merge changes in history and bookmarks from the other two systems.

I have written a vi that parses data out of text files which makes use of the open text file vi. When I compile the vi to run as a stand alone application, The open file dialogue will only accept .vi files for opening. Why is this? Thanks, Russ T.
