Trouble syncing iPod touch - unknown error (-50)

I'm trying to sync my iPod touch and getting an unknown error (-50). I've tried restarting iTunes, restarting my computer, and restarting the iPod. None of that is working. It was working earlier today, so I'm not sure what happened. I installed some new applications earlier in the day, which are working fine. I was trying to install some photos on the iPod when I first started getting the error.
Any idea what the error is or how I can fix it?
Thanks!

I have plenty of space - both on iPod Touch & my Mac.
One think i have noticed is iTunes will not let me select specific photo albums to include on the iPod. Basically it isn't importing photos. I did recently upgrade to iLife '09
The good news is that it does seem to be syncing in the background even when the warning sign appears - I click OK and it has synced in my absence as opposed to waiting till I click OK then is starts syncing - very annoying.

    Hi msclaude,
Welcome to the Support Communities!  I'm not sure from your post what steps you have tried, but it sounds like you may need to use recovery mode to address the issue with your unresponsive iPod touch.

If you can't update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
You can put your iOS device into recovery mode, then restore it using iTunes.
    Use recovery mode
You might need to use recovery mode to restore your device in these cases:
iTunes doesn't recognize your device or says it's in recovery mode.
You see the Apple logo onscreen for several minutes with no progress bar.
You see the Connect to iTunes screen.
Learn what to do if you see the progress bar onscreen for several minutes.
To put your device into recovery mode, follow these steps:
Turn off your device and leave it off.
Plug in your device's USB cable to a computer with iTunes.
Hold down the Home button on your device as you connect the USB cable. Keep holding down the Home button until you see the Connect to iTunes screen.
When you see this screen, release the Home button. If you don't see this screen, try steps 1 through 3 again.
When your device is connected, iTunes will open. You'll see a message saying that iTunes has detected an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch in recovery mode.
Use iTunes to restore your device. Restoring in recovery mode will erase your device. If you previously synced with iTunes or iCloud, you might be able to restore from your backup.Get more help
Learn what to do if you don't see your device in iTunes for OS X, or in iTunes for Windows.
If you put your device into recovery mode by mistake, restart it. Or you can wait 15 minutes and your device will exit recovery mode by itself.
I hope this information helps ....

    Error 2000-2009 (2001, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2009, and so on)
If you experience this issue on a Mac, disconnect third-party devices, hubs, spare cables, displays, reset the SMC, and then try to restore. If you are using a Windows computer, remove all USB devices and spare cables other than your keyboard, mouse, and the device, restart the computer, and try to restore. If that does not resolve the issue, try the USB issue-resolution steps and articles listed for Error 1604 above. If the issue persists, it may be related to conflicting security software. If the errors persist on another computer and known-good USB cable, the device may need service.

  • Trouble syncing iPod Touch

I tried to sync our ipod Touch to the computer again today.  I hadn't done so since just after it was purchased.  Halfway through the backup, it reported an "unknown error".  However, the hashed bar at the top of itunes continued.    I tried to wait it out, but decided it wasn't going anywhere, so hit the "eject" icon.  It told me it was syncing, and was I sure.  I hit yes, waited a bit, and then pulled the USB cable out of the computer.  itunes wouldn't respond to a shutdown command, so I had to force it down.  Now the ipod won't load all the apps it has, and when I sync now, it tells me I can either set it up as a new device, or restore from backup.  The backup is from before any apps were loaded, so therefore I would have to re-do that.  The options are not defined well.  I believe my choices are as follows:
    1)  Restore, thus reverting the ipod to the last time it successfully synced with the computer.
    2)  Set up as new device, thus keeping the information on the ipod that is there now.
Is that correct, or will #2 do something different?
    Thanks in advance,
    Mark

    You said:
    1)  Restore, thus reverting the ipod to the last time it successfully synced with the computer.
    2)  Set up as new device, thus keeping the information on the ipod that is there now.
You are right for number 1.
However, for number 2, your iPod will be erased.  It will be like it was when you originally purchased the iPod except it will have the latest iOS installed.

  • Cant Restore Ipod Touch - Unknown Error 1604

Can someone please help. I went to connect my ipod touch to my itunes and it told me that the ipod needed restoring and updating. Updated it and clicked restore - tried to restore it and came up with the message "could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1604)." Any help would be appreciatd.

Ok, I've been trying to fix this for 3 DAYS!!! But, I finally found the answer an hour ago and my Touch is sitting next to me happily syncing away. Rather than let someone else go through the pain I've been experiencing I thought I'd share how I fixed this.
After trying all the various suggestions (re-installing, another PC etc.), this is what I did:
When you get the 1604 error click 'ok' but keep your iPod plugged in
Go to 'Task Manager' and find the 'iTunes' process
Click 'End Process' which will terminate iTunes
    (Remember, don't unplug your iPod!!)
    Start up iTunes again
iTunes will then recognise the iPod
Click 'Restore' and you should be ok
Some of the other suggestions might also work for you but just thought I'd give you another option.
Good luck, I know how frustrasting this is!!

  • Trouble syncing iPod touch 4th generation

A few days ago, iTunes began to struggle picking up my iPod when it was plugged in, and then stopped syncing to it altogether - either the syncs were timing out, stopped by 'an unknown error', or I couldn't 'write to this iPod'. I uninstalled iTunes and reinstalled it, and it worked fine for about a day, and now it keeps getting stuck copying 'Safari safe browsing data'. The bar only makes it halfway and then the sync cancels itself, and sometimes, the bar even moves backwards. Any thoughts as to how I could fix with without needing to constantly uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes? Or is it a bug in the update?

    Have you tried:
    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on the router.
    - Reset networks settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
    - iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    - iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    - Does this happen with all networks or only yours?
If only yours then that points to a problem with your network/router.
If all networks that points to an iPod problem an an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
For the future, saying "I've looked through many forums etc for advice, but nothing has been useful." provides us with zero information as to what you tried.

My daughter's ipod touch wasn't operating correctly - apps wouldn't update, locked up, etc.  I attempted to back up and restore, but it won't let me restore, instead citing "unknown error 18", but it's now locked in a half-restored state and I can't do anything with it.

  • Trouble Syncing Ipod Touch 2G?

My daughter has had an Ipod Touch 2G for quite some time now. I sync it with Itunes every few months. I tried during Christmas however the computer is not recognizing it. On the Itunes webpage, it appears that it is now compatable with iOS 4.3.3, and iPod touch (3rd generation or later)-I need to double check the OS but it meets either of these requirements.
If this is becoming a dinosaur, can someone tell me if I can go back to a previous version of Itunes or if I can upgrade her software?

Your only way is if you have the version that was compatible on your computer such as in the recycle bin/trash or in a computer file backup. In that case delete the current version that is in your iTunes App library and replace it with the older version. Then sync.
