Trouble texting with Siri

When I first got my iPhone 5 I was able to send text messages through Siri. Now it just says message failure with a red exclamation mark by the text message. How do I fix this so I can text through Siri?

Turn siri off then reboot phone
Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the home button together until the apple logo appears (ignore the ON/OFF slider) then let both buttons go and wait for phone to restart (no data will be lost).
After the phone restarts turn siri back on and try again

Does anyone know why this might be?

  • How do you start a new sentence when texting with Siri?

Siri is great but i can't figure out how to have it put a period and start a new sentence when sending texts/emails.  anyone know how?  Thanks!

NOPE!!!  If you pause even for a split second while dictating, siri assumes you're done, and message winds up incomplete!!!   Have to start over from beggining and it may still cut you off.  happens to me with almost ANY dictated text longer than 2-3 words.
I have been an Apple fanboi for over a decade, but my 2 year iPhone experience has me wishing I'd stuck to android! :-/

  • Having a problem with the dictation of texts using Siri.

I am using the microphone on the text screen to dictate my message, and then I press done.  Siri completes the translation from voice to text (with fairly good accuracy I might add), BUT when I press the SEND button the message is not sent.  Rather the messaging screen shuts down and it returns me to the home screen.

Siri is still beta. Since Apple doesn't participate in this forum (strictly user-to-user), if you want to tell Apple anything, post it here:

  • Trouble with Siri

Trouble with Siri - Every time I use her, she always states that there is an issue and to try her later. Does she ever work anymore? Anyone else having this issue?

Is your data connection active when you ask the questions? I believe Siri needs either the cellular data connection or a Wifi connection to connect with the Apple servers.
It is also possible that the servers themselves might have an issue at the time of the attempts.

  • Is anyone else having trouble with Siri calling someone from your Contacts on the Iphone 5?

Has anyone had trouble with Siri on the Iphone 5 in dealing with your Contacts.  She gives all of the correct information on scores for the NFL but not if I ask her to call somebody in my contacts. She has no trouble with which movies are playing tonight at my local theaters.
If I ask her to call someone from my Contacts, she takes a very long time and then says something like this, "Uh oh, there's a problem. Can you try again?" or something of this nature.  Any help appreciated.  BTW I download my information from Itunes and also had to change my sim card in order for Verizon to keep my same telephone number.

I have not had this problem. I am new to Siri (with an iPhone 5 upgrade from an i4) and Siri has made a number of calls from my contacts. She asks, which John Doe (if I have more than one), which number (if I have more than one) and off we go.
Maybe, you have some setting wrong.

  • IPhone 4S keyboard dictation does not work - associated with Siri?

I have not been able to get the built-in iPhone 4S keyboard dictation to work. I talk into it, then tap "Done", then the phone "thinks" for a few seconds (the purple dots pulse and I see the network icon on the top bar spinning) and then nothing happens.  The screen I was typing on comes back with nothing added.
Probably not coincidentally, I can't get Siri to work now either - she is "sorry, having trouble connecting to the network."
I've rebooted my phone and even reset the network settings, which doesn't help. I'm surprised the network would be so congested before 9 AM eastern USA time.
So, my question is, does the keyboard dictation tool go through the same network as Siri? Is this why it's not working?
FWIW, I got Dragon Dictation to work fine.
I think it's questionable design to make keyboard dictation work only with a network connection. I can understand this with Siri but not with ordinary keyboard dictation. It's a lot of overhead to go back and forth over the server if you are just dictating text.

My problem is similar with a variation. Siri is working fine. The dictation feature, however, has suddenly stopped working (and I was so excited about it when I started using it - and I haven't used it that much). I don't have text enabled, by the way, so I can't use Frank's suggestion above.
I have a 4-bar 3G connection (I live in Wilmington, NC - the town where my provider has its HQ, so the connection is not the issue). However, when I attempt to use the dictation feature, all I get is a spinning wheel next to the 3G icon and 3 pulsing purple dots, which don't stop until I hit the Home button or some other key. The dictated text never materializes. This makes me quite sad and frustrated. Up until now, I have been unequivocally in love with my IPhone 4S, and I want to be completely in love with it again.
I'd really appreciate a helpful solution.
**An update - Siri can take the dictation that I wanted to use with the microphone icon (she just wrote up a note for me, for example), but I really want to be able to go straight to the application and hit the microphone icon, to use fewer words/keystrokes, etc.

  • I'm fed up with Siri

    Hi,
I noticed that there is an entire section for Siri here, but I'm so upset, I felt the need to create my own thread.
I purchased an iPhone 4S for one reason: because of Siri - why? Because I travel in areas where I want to keep my iphone safe in my pocket yet make calls and send text messages without exposing my phone. Phones get stolen easily where I live.
Its pretty annoying that the developers have put in useless stuff like asking Siri: "What is the meaning of life?" yet left out vital stuff like how to understand or interpret names in language that are not in Siri's default language (for example: If Siri is set to US English, it will not understand a French name in the contact list - or vice versa).? I CANNOT believe that Siri requires an internet connection to work! This to me "grand theft" - why not tell us that Siri requires an internet connection before selling it? I travel on the metro where a 3G connection is not available. The GSM part works fine in the metro, but 3G/2G is not always available.
Also, I travel a lot, and travel in dangerous places also. I tested Siri for one ESSENTIAL usage, which it failed on:
    Me: "Call Emergency Services"
Siri: "I cannot find Emergency Services in your contact list"
(I tried a permutation of this, and it still didn't understand).
How annoying. Imagine how convienient it would be do have siri at least know the numbers of all the emergency services based on the country you are in, and put you through. In most emergency situations, you would expect the phone to AT LEAST know how to call the local emergency services, and especially using a handsfree technology.
Here is a list of issues I have with Siri:
    * It should not require an internet connection to tell me what the time is, or even lookup a contact.
    * It should know the Emergency numbers of any country you are in! If I'm not mistaken, isn't this a legal requirement anyway?
    * It should be able to understand a contact's name if their name is in a foreign language to what Siri's language is set to.
Its not rocket science. Siri could have asked me: "What contact name does this correspond to?". I can then select the contact name that this name corresponds to, and siri should know that each time I say that person's name, it should lookup the given contact.
I know this is beta, but these are basic features I'd have expected.
It annoys me that the apple engineers have wasted time adding stuff for responses to questions like "Can you sing?", and left out really important stuff.
I think to make Siri better, there needs to be a setup-wizard that asks you personal questions:
    a) It already figured out who you are in your contacts list but it needs to ask you the following:
    1) Please enter your work address
    2) Please enter your home address
    3) Who is your wife
    4) Who is your boss? etc..
    b) It needs to go through your contact list to sort out duplicates. Google Gmail have this feature. Their GMAIL system can merge duplicates. I would expect this from a smartphone like an iPhone.
    c) Everyone has different accents and not all my friends have U.S. English names - so there should be a way for Siri to map your voice command (of a contact) to someone in the contact list. This should be in the setup wizard.
    d) Apple engineers need to focus on the essential/urgent features one would need Siri for. I don't really want to ask my iphone what the meaning of life is, but if I'm on my handsfree, and late for work, with Siri in my pocket, I really would have liked to know what the time is without expecting her to tell me that she cannot tell me the system time because there is no internet connection.
I really hope the next release addresses these issues.

    Allan,
Please let me summarize the situation for you:
I stated clearly that I travel in places where phones are stolen. The public transport system ask you to not take out your mobile phone in the bus, or metro. Everyone I know (EVERYONE) has had their phone stolen when it was out of their pockets whilst they were using it.
So, I purchased the iPhone 4S ONLY because of Siri - the ability to interact with my phone without taking it out of my pocket. Telling me to "Turn it off" is just stupid. It doesn't solve the problem, and its unhelpful.
As for "ranting" - if you feel that its a rant, why are you here on this thread?? I think I have the right to discuss my problem - that's what this forum is for.
Secondly, it is not rocket science for the app to tell me the time without going to the internet. It WAS THE FEATURE I had on my previous voice controlled phone!! The time is already on the phone! Why is it going to the internet to get the time?
Finally, had I known that Siri insists on an internet connection to function (even for basic functions), i'd never have bought the phone. A GPRS/UMTS data signal is not always available and the requirement to use this for Siri to work would have put me off from purchasing it in the 1st place.
Do you have anything useful to add Allan??
