Mid-2010 15" MacBook Pros - the bad NVIDIA GPU
I would uninstall all Symantec software, but...
If you're having frequent kernel panics with your 15" mid-2010, or intermittent screen problems, the problem is, more than likely, the faulty NVIDIA GPU found in a number of those machines.
Here's just a sample of a kernel panic log that points to the faulty NVIDIA card:
Kernel Extensions in backtrace (with dependencies):
             com.apple.GeForce(6.4.0)@0x82ac4000->0x82b7afff
                dependency: com.apple.NVDAResman(6.4.0)@0x834a0000
                dependency: com.apple.iokit.IONDRVSupport(2.2.1)@0x82fd3000
                dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(2.6.5)@0x7a802000
                dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily(2.2.1)@0x8301b000
             com.apple.nvidia.nv50hal(6.4.0)@0x83c05000->0x84019fff
                dependency: com.apple.NVDAResman(6.4.0)@0x834a0000
             com.apple.NVDAResman(6.4.0)@0x834a0000->0x8378dfff
                dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(2.6.5)@0x7a802000
                dependency: com.apple.iokit.IONDRVSupport(2.2.1)@0x82fd3000
                dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily(2.2.1)@0x8301b000
Here's the "official" Apple take on the issue - but the very real kernel panics need not be preceded by 'Intermittent black screen or loss of video'... in fact, you might not experience any video problems at all. Although video problems can certainly be a portent of things to come…
So what can you do? Print out a copy of your kernel panic and a copy of the Knowledge Base article and take them, along with your machine, to your local Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. The unfortunate thing is that many people have passed the “three years from date of purchase” now and Apple is not honoring the free logic board replacement for many users. Some dealers seem to be making some exceptions for those past the three year mark, but don’t count on it…
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • MacBook Pro mid 2010 goes to sleep right after booting

Hello and thank you in advance to anyone that can help me. I have  a MacBook Pro mid 2010 and I recently spill tea on the computer. I took everything and dried out everything hoping and praying that it will start again. I put everything back together and it started but right after starting (like 15 seconds after)  the monitor goes to sleep right away. But here is the weird thing; I have Windows 8 installed on bootcamp, so if I start on bootcamp, it starts with no problem. I am actually writing this from my macbook but on bootcamp. Any ideas why it goes to sleep on Mac but in Windows seems to be working just fine?

Power or other problems related to unexpected system sleep, shutdown, lights or fans call for an SMC reset. Read all the steps.
    Before Resetting the SMC
Try each of the following steps in this order before you reset the SMC. Test the issue after completing each troubleshooting step to determine if the issue still occurs.
Press Command + Option + Escape to force quit any application that is not responding.
Put your Mac to sleep by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Sleep. Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.
Restart your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Restart.
Shut down your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Shut Down.
Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if it's not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time. The power adapter indicator light will cycle off / on once.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.

  • My MacBook Pro (mid 2010) won't startup correctly in my admin account, but works fine if I use the guest account...

My MacBook Pro (mid-2010) suddenly stopped working when I was overseas, but I managed to fix it when I returned back to the States after I reformatted and erased the disk, then installed Yosemite. I lost most of my files but didn't really care, though I noticed that some pictures from iPhoto had survived and were in the Trash folder.
I thought I could copy/paste them back into iPhoto, but it wouldn't let me since they were still in the trash. I started getting an error message for EACH PICTURE saying it couldn't be copied because it was in the trash, and when I realized that I'd have to click "ok" 644 times (once for each picture), I tried to restart, then shut down, and eventually forced a shut down by holding down the power button. This is where the problem started...
After trying to startup again, I was able to login to my admin account, and the desktop image would load, but I'd get the spinning rainbow wheel and the computer would remain frozen like that from then on. I tried to repair the disk (there was nothing wrong), and even re-installed the operating system again, but still the problem persists. BUT, if I login with my guest account, everything works fine.
I'm guessing it has something to do with it somehow being frozen on those error messages for those 600+ pictures, but I have no idea how to fix/unfreeze it. Any tips or suggestions?

Can the use of SATA3 instead of SATA2 hdd lead to some issues with my macbook?
I can try to find and buy new SATA2 sdd hdd but they are expensive and I'm not sure it will fix the restarting issue.
SATA3 is backwards compatible with SATA2.  That is not likely to be your problem.
Based on what you have done, I suggest a reinstall of the OSX.
    Ciao.

Can you upgrade to this version and see whether the crash stil exists?

I have Windows XP Service Pack 3, I am having the same issues whether I use Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, or Mozilla Firefox. My HP Pavilion Desktop has 504 MB of Ram and I am using high speed internet connection. Because it was crashing so much, I used the uninstall program for Flash player to uninstall Flash, I checked my registry and removed anything I saw that was Flash. I then uninstalled Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox, then I reinstalled the most recent versions from their websites. I did the same for FlashPlayer and Shockwave Flash. I went to the Adobe website and had them check to see if it was working and it shows I have FlashPlayer 10.3.181.36. The page that shows  which version of flash player goes with Windows XP states that I should have 10.3.181.34 (This is what I thought I had before I updated, I was having the same problems). When I went into my computer to see what version I have, it shows 11.5.9.620 Activex and both Flash Player and Flash Player Object is listed as 10.3.181.34. My firewall for Windows is set to medium. I also am running Norton Internet Security. It takes anywhere from 3-6minutes for some of my games to load, and I have to refresh at least 3-4 times in order to play. When I do start to play it freezes frequently and I use escape to free it up. This has been going on for a month. I have no idea what to do. I am not very computer savy and I have been learning as I go.

  • How do I connect my MacBook Pro Mid 2010 to a VGA monitor

I have a MacBook Pro mid 2010 that I would like to connect to a VGA LCD monitor. It connects and I get the mac book screen saver but no desktop icons or tool bar. Am I missing a setting?

External screens are designed to work as extended displays for your computer's display. It means that menu bars and desktop icons won't appear, and you will only see windows if you drag them to the right part of the computer's display.
To change this, you have to activate video mirroring > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5019

I have a 15' Macbook Pro, mid 2010 running Mavericks. I want to upgrade the hardware by increasing the RAM to 8GB and replacing the HD for a SDD one. What would be the best way to install mavericks on the new HD? I have the original OS X CD.
From what I read, I have 2 choices: 1. to install OSX and then upgrade to Mavericks, but I'm not sure if this would be possible (to upgrade directly from OSX to Mavericks); and 2. to use a software called Super Duper.
I wouldn't like to have to use a third party software to do this, so the question is: is there a better way to install directly the Mavericks not having to use a third party software?

Install the new drive in the computer.
Install the old drive in an external USB or Firewire enclosure.
Boot the computer from the Recovery HD on the external drive.
Use Disk Utility to partition and format the new internal drive.
Clone your external drive to the internal drive.
How to replace or upgrade a drive in a laptop
Step One: Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Step Two: Remove the old drive and install the new drive.  Place the old drive in an external USB enclosure.  You can buy one at OWC who is also a good vendor for drives.
Step Three: Boot from the Recovery HD on the external drive.  Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager appears.  Select the icon for the Recovery HD then click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Step Four: New Hard Drive Preparation
      1. Open Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your new hard drive (this is the entry with the
mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of
the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive
is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  Otherwise, click on the
Partition tab in the DU main window.
      3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from
the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended
(Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to
GUID  then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and
wait until the process has completed.
      4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the
drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main
          window.
      5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the
Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to
          return to the Erase window.
      6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several
hours depending upon the drive size.
Step Five: Clone the old drive to the new drive
      1. Using Disk Utility still opened.
      2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
      3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
      4. Check the box labeled Erase destination.
      5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the
          Destination entry field.
      6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the
          Source entry field.
      7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the new internal drive. Source means the old external drive.
Step Six: Open the Startup Disk preferences and select the new internal volume.  Click on the Restart button.  You should boot from the new drive.  Eject the external drive and disconnect it from the computer.

  • Thunderbolt Display connection to MacBook Pro Mid 2010

I got a new display 27" and I have to read now that I can't connect this to my MacBook Pro Mid 2010. Older Displays are not sold anymore said the sales person and it is no problem to connect.
I can't beleave what I'm reading in this forum.
Is it true that Apple is not producing any Displays anymore for Persons how have bought their computer 2010?? I'm using Apple for more than 20 years now but that is now just totaly unaccepable.
    1. The sales person telling me connection is no problem
    2. Apple not producing a screen for "older" Hardware
So please Apple:  Find a solution for it. And please folks don't try to tell me it was written online somewhere hidden in the specs. ok?
    Thanks for a answer ASAP
    Mike

What you've asked is true.  You can buy similar displays from Dell or other manufacturers that will work with your laptop.  Many of the Dell's use the same internal LG panels, so quality is similar.

    Hey Clintonfrombirmingham
I called Apple technical support in Denmark, but with no positive reply.
She couldn't do anything, and said that They had sent a recall Email about the problem and with their offer to repair the Macbook Pro, but I'd never recieved an Email about the problem. She wasn't in power to make an exception. It can't be true that i paid a lot of money, for a product that can't barely stand on its own feets, Apple didn't tell me that the product I was about to buy, would restart every 5 minute. and now when  they know the problem, they wont repair it? it just don't make sense for me. If a car seller discovers that all the brakes in a car he had sold, will crash after some years he will call all the cars back to repair no mater what. i just don't understand how Apple will make good service for their custumers, by extending the warranty from 2 to 3 years, but wont take the computers there is a little bit to old, 4 months will make the difference. i can't believe it.
    What can i do now?
    best regards Oskar

  • Unable to open Bootcamp install of Vista after upgrading MacBook Pro / Mid 2010 to OS Mavericks

    Dear Community,
I am unable able to boot the Windows Vista install (via Boot Camp) on my MacBook Pro / mid 2010 after upgrading to OS Maverick.
Any idea about how this problem can be solved (I don't want to purchase Windows 7 and I don't want to purchase a virtual machine)?
    Many thanks for your support!

    Hello 88,
I haven't resized / modified anything since installing Vista on my System. The problem must have incurred when upgrading from Snow Leopard to Maverick.
    by the way:
I (just) found out that Windows Vista is booting (automatically) when I insert my original "Mac OS X Install DVD" / 10.6.3 (or my "Applications Install DVD") before starting the MacBook. It will - hwr - not boot without above DVDs in the tray...

what's up with the screw job on the Airplay mirroring?  Macbook Pro (mid 2010) too old to have feature included in Mountain upgrade?  Bull!

    Please read:
    http://arstechnica.com/apple/2012/07/mountain-lion-airplay-mirroring-v-airparrot -fight/
Mountain Lion's integrated AirPlay mirroring support only works with the following Mac models:
    iMac—Mid 2011 or newer
    Mac mini—Mid 2011 or newer
    MacBook Air—Mid 2011 or newer
    MacBook Pro—Early 2011 or newer
If your Mac isn't on that list, your won't ever see an AirPlay option in Mountain Lion's menubar.
What separates these Macs from other Mountain Lion-compatible machines is that these are the only models that have support for Intel's QuickSync technology. What confirmed this requirement for me was the fact that my Retina MacBook Pro switched to integrated Intel HD4000 graphics even when otherwise running on the discrete NVIDIA GT 650M GPU. No matter what you are doing or what resolution you are running, AirPlay Mirroring in Mountain Lion requires an integrated Intel HD3000 or HD4000 graphics processor and its QuickSync technology to work, full stop.

  • What logic boards are compatable with macbook pro mid 2010

i'm just curious about what logic boards are compatable with my macbook pro mid 2010?  didn't know if i needed to stay within the same year or if there are others that would work with mid 2010 layout inside the casing.  right now i have 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and NVIDIA GeForce 320M 256 MB and really looking to upgrade this if i can find one online from a mac with a broken screen or some defect with the logic board intact.

Rather than the Samsung EVO, I would get a Crucial M500 series - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Crucial-960GB-Solid-State-Drive/dp/B00BQ8RGL6/ref=pd_sim _computers_5 - they just seem to 'play well' with Macs where some people have reported problems with Macs and the EVO series.
    Good luck,
    Clinton
