Trouble trying to reinstall Tiger on black Macbook

Hi:
I bought a new 13 inch white macbook - version 2,1. I also purchased a black 13 inch macbook that was used - version 1,1. The black mac didn't come with install discs. I wanted to give the used computer a clean install so I thought I would simply use the tiger discs that came with the new one. Unfortunately, when I try to begin the process, I get a message that says this software cannot be used with this system. Are the factory install discs really specific to black and white models? Or is there a problem because the black model is version 1,1. When Leopard comes out, will I be able to use the store bought version on either of these computers?
Thanks in advance for any info
Bruce

Are the factory install discs really specific to black and white models? Or is there a problem because the black model is version 1,1.
The disks are specific to each MacBook production run.
When Leopard comes out, will I be able to use the store bought version on either of these computers?
Yes.

The first thing you should do with a second-hand computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. How you do that depends on the model. Look it up on this page to see what version was originally installed.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) installation disc, which you can get from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller — not from eBay or anything of the kind. If the machine has less than 1 GB of memory, you'll need to add more in order to install 10.6. I suggest you install as much memory as it can take, according to the technical specifications.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the installation media that came with it: gray installation discs, or a USB flash drive for some MacBook Air models. If you don't have the media, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
To boot from an optical disc or a flash drive, insert it, then reboot and hold down the C key at the startup chime. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, you don't need media. It should boot into Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
Once booted from the disc or in Internet Recovery, launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive — not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In the Partition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive, which is what you should do.
After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. When the installation is done, the system will automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
You should then run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. If you want to upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, buy it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the previous owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed — you have to repurchase them.
If the previous owner "accepted" the bundled iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, and Garage Band) in the App Store so that he or she could update them, then they're linked to that Apple ID and you won't be able to download them without buying them. Reportedly, Apple customer service has sometimes issued redemption codes for these apps to second owners who asked.
If the previous owner didn't deauthorize the computer in the iTunes Store under his Apple ID, you wont be able toauthorize it under your ID. In that case, contact iTunes Support.

  • Trying to reinstall lion os on MacBook

I am trying to reinstall lion on my MacBook air, but it just says its trying to verify details with apple but nothing else happens?
When I boot up the MacBook, a utilities window opens with 4 options to choose from. I select reinstall mac os x and then on the next screen, it says to set up the installation of mac os x 10.7 click continue, so I do that, it then says to download my computers eligibility will be verified by apple, I click continue and it says loading installation information... But doesn't go any further, the wheel keeps turning as if it is doing something, but nothing else happens. Any ideas?

    update:
    1. Called Support... and it didnt really help. basic troubleshooting etc.
    2. continued my testing - restart CMD + R and connect to my office wifi (yesterday was at home) and start downloading the installer. after a while, got the installation popup prompting me to install, click next, then got finally to download the Lion source. However, my connection in office is so slow it was taking 7hours to get the whole thing.
    3. I thought that the guy at the end of the line did something miraculous... I then disconnected and went back home trying the exact same steps... and I was impossible to get it work !!
This is really amazing, the worst piece of crap I have ever seen. Brand new macbook air shipped with Lion installed and I can't get to reinstall the whole system ?!? This is really ridiculous !
Another part is that I tried to install Snow Leopard from the USB key (provided with earlier mba 11") and it can't even get to the installer... that's another point...
Apple, can you get a fix?

    The internal drive has failed.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional — ask if you need guidance.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

  • Trying to reinstall Tiger but my HD won't mount!

My Powerbook would not boot up. It was stuck at a blue screen after the apple on the white background. Ran Techtool passed all tests and repaired permissions. Still no boot
Tried to run Diskwarrior but it would restart while app was loading.
Decided to reinstall Tiger but the installer is not seeing my hard drive!!! Ran disk utility from installation disk (retail 10.4.6)could not repair volume. Message was directory files should be 2 instead of 3.
Tried to mount the disk but was unable. Said to run utility to repair. Whewwww...
Okay, I have everything backed up, now I just want to start over. Should I erase the hard drive and then try to reinstall? Please help!!!

It looks like you're going to have to do that, since DiskWarrior won't run, so you can't tell what might be wrong with the disk. I'd zero out the drive and then restore from your backup if possible; otherwise I'd reinstall from the OS X install discs, then Repair Disk, Repair Permissions, and then update to 10.4.7 using the 10.4.7 Combo Update.

  • Trying to reinstall Tiger over trashed system from dmg; prompted to restart

I am stuck in a restart loop trying to archive and reinstall Tiger on internal drive. It crashed last night. Rebuilt directory with Disk Warrior which created a folder called "rescued items" which contained what looked like system files. I reformatted the drive and copied saved files. Drive is no longer recognized as startup-able.
I have only the Mac OSX Tiger.dmg file, not the disks. The installer on the dmg prompts a restart which lands me back on my external 10.3 drive and no installer in sight. I am further hampered by a stuck superdrive door which I've tried everything to open, including using Open Firmware commands. Trusty paperclip trick no longer works. Gotta find a gorilla next, I guess. Otherwise I would install Leopard, sitting there waiting patiently for me to get my act together.
Should I reformat the drive again and start afresh, or what? Thanks in advance.

Is there something in the Drive?
Have you tried booting up while holding the Left Mouse button down?

  • I am trying to reinstall Windows on my macbook pro.  I downloaded the support files and Windows 7 iso file to a USB drive.  However, when I try to run the setup.exe program I get the message "this program cannot be run in DOS mode."

I am trying to reinstall Windows (would not launch).  I removed the partition and started over.  I downloaded the support files and Windows 7 iso file to a USB drive.  However, when I try to run the setup.exe program I get the message "this program cannot be run in DOS mode."  I was successful before, what am I doing wrong this time?

    Try a restart.
If that doesn't fix the problem, shut down the computer and then power it back up. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application unistaller. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • Tried to reinstall Tiger and now trackpad isn't working

I am getting ready to sell my iBook G4 and got a copy of Tiger to do a wipe and install for the new user. When I first put in the DVD the installation screen started up with a picture of a mouse and batteries. I don't have an external mouse (and never have) and managed to bypass the screen to find that the DVD wasn't recognizing the trackpad. I rebooted into the old OSX and the mouse worked fine. So I tried again to boot from the Tiger DVD and still, mouse isn't recognized. I go through the install anyway thinking that it might fix it. But now the trackpad isn't recognized at all. I've tried resetting the PRAM (I think, I did ctlopt+pr). And I have also done the shiftctl+optpower button (although I might not have done it correctly, I just pressed and held all buttons in sequence for a second and then let go, is that right?). Still it doesn't work. What else should I do? It was working fine under the old Tiger, but the new install isn't. Suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I just fixed the problem by running software update and updating to 10.4.11

  • Trying to reinstall tiger but no install disk

i think my parents threw out my install disk when i moved. no one can find it now. is there any way to reinstall the os without a disk?

Yes, it may be the best method, it is quick and simple. (EDIT: Of course you'll have to re-install all third party software) But I would back up your entire /Users folder. There may be other information there you'll need. Make your backup before you do another thing.
i want to do this because my machine has been acting up ever since i installed about a billion fonts on it last year.
Have you tried dragging ~(yourHome)/Library/Fonts folder to the desktop and restarting? (Assuming that is the folder that you installed your Fonts to)
If you re-install (after getting your new disks) don't forget to apply the 10.4.9 PPC Combo Update. And remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.
    Good luck

  • Flashing question mark, trying to reinstall Tiger but no volume found to install it too.

I was installing updates to this mid 2004 iBook I bought and upon restart I just got tr flashing question mark folder. I tired booting from the OS disc to install, but it tells me there is no volume to install the software too. WTh? It was just working fine 20 minutes ago. It sounds like the HHD engaged but the computer isnt seeing it. Is the hard drive gone or what?

Hello, it sounds like the hard drive has gone to me, the question mark icon you described would be Mac OS X not finding a volume to boot from. It does suggest a replacement hard drive is required, however I have G4 14" iBook that has a problem with a chip on the logic board. A common problem now with old used iBooks. The chip solder becomes departed from the board and eventually effects the iBook's ability to read the hard drive. I am not suggesting this is your fault here, but it's worth being aware of. I personally would replace the hard drive fist and with all luck it will resolve your problem.
    Good Luck

  • Uninstall leopard on my quicksilver g4 and reinstall tiger

I have run into serious problems with leopard on my quicksilver mac. I get the kernal panic. I have tried disk warrior and it shuts down.I tried to reinstall tiger, which ran perfectly in the past. It tells me that I have to upgrade panther to 10.3. and then upgrade to tiger. I had been running Tiger for 2 years but it doesn't seem to know that. I can't get into the computer to do this. I repurchased Panther and tried to reinstall it and it says I can not do that. There was a system error. Does anyone have any ideas for me?

It is very likely that your problem is not with the OS version you are running but with your hard drive. Try booting from an installer optical disk (preferably the Leopard retail one) & instead of running an installer, run Disk Utility from its "Utilities" menu. Try running its "Repair Disk" function on your internal hard drive. If this hangs or is unable to repair all problems it finds, you will probably have to reformat the drive. *Note that this will erase all data on it, so you must have a backup of at least your user files or you will lose everything!*
    Some background info:
Disk Warrior is a fine utility but like any other such utility, you must run a version of it that is compatible with the Tiger/Leopard file system to prevent problems. Additionally, if you try to boot the computer from a Disk Warrior CD, it must include an OS capable of booting your Mac model. Refer to the Disk Warrior web site for more info about this.
If your Tiger installer disk says that you must upgrade the existing OS, it is what is known as an "upgrade" disk, not a full or retail Tiger installer. It would not tell you that you have to "upgrade panther to 10.3" because 10.3 is Panther. It is telling you that it is only capable of installing Tiger (10.4) over Panther (10.3). Thus, if you have any other OS version such as Tiger or Leopard installed, it will tell you that it can't do the install.
All retail & some other installer disks offer several install options, depending on what they find installed on the target drive. See for example Installing Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard for more info about this. The option & target drive you choose determines if the installation is possible or not.

  • Trying to Reinstall AFTER a crash

my computer froze for about 1 hour i had to restart then i got the folder w/? , shut it back down ran disk worrier three time's then it still starts w/ the ? on the folder then after 25 min it finally gets to my desk top but very slow, everything i do is very slow, i tried Disk Utility to fix it but it say's that it can! i even tried to reinstall tiger and my hard drive isn't there. help?

    Hi Ihatespam;
RATS! This is begining to sound like one of those "out of the pan and into the fire" type problems.
The more information you give me the worst it sounds. Do you have any of your data backed up? It is starting to sound more and more like serious hard drive problems. I have only heard of Disk Warrior failling when the hard drive was no good.
For your sake I hope I am wrong and someone else might come with another idea for you. Right now I have exhausted all of my ideas.

Forgot to mention... I don't trust AHWTCD that much, but it's all we've got basically.
panic(cpu 0 caller 0x002DEC28): Unable to find driver for this platform: "Powerbook5,8"
Well, if everything else is right and as you say, then seems the CD/DVD is damaged, or the Optical drive is bad, but if those install disks are CDs then it's not the Optical, only if we're talking DVDs for them... assuming we've eliminated the other reasons it can't find the driver.
Hmmm, I have a set of Install CD's that are miss marked number wise... but you would've noticed that on another install.
