Trouble updating my first generation iPad version 3.2.2?

So I'm having trouble updating my iPad first generation (version 3.2.2). Whenever I click the Update button it will always get stuck on the "Back Up" process for hours although I already Backed up my iPad (by right clicking my iPad's name on the "Devices" then selecting "Back Up" and it works just fine). I'm doing it on Windows by the way, Windows Xp. Does it have something to do with the version I'm trying to update to (version 5.1.1)? Should I update my iPad to a lower version like version 4.0 maybe? Can I do that? Or is it the computer I am using? What should I do? I'd appreciate any any help.

Yay updated to version 5.1.1! Just updated iTunes and it fixed the problem also, I don't know what happened but all of the apps won't open, so I delete all the apps before updating my iPad and it worked, the update was fast too! Thank you!

I just updated my original iPad 32 GB WiFi to iOS 5.1 about fifteen minutes ago.  But I did it with the system restore feature in iTunes.  So it wiped out everything on my iPad.  But it did work.  Then I restored an earlier backup and all went fine.  Maybe you could try backing up your iPad and then using Restore to get it back to factory settings to see what happens.

  • Ios updates to first generation iPad ?  Is 5.1.1 the end of the line ??

ios updates to first generation iPad ?  Is 5.1.1 the end of the line ??

That's not so good!  I found 5.1 was fairly stable but since upgrading to 5.1.1, Safari crashes frequently and it totally refuses to read some PDF's that have been readable in iBooks previously.
My local Apple Store said the problem was that my IPad (2 years old) is obsolete and I should buy a new one!
I know people have complained about IOS6 because of the mapping - but I would welcome anything that made it crash less!
Maybe related but I used to charge the battery every three days (I just use it for email & web in the evenings).  Since the upgrade, I have to charge every day.  3 hours use tonight and it's down to 20%.
I've completely disabled iCloud (again a shame because I really liked the syncing with my iPhone4s) and the only two apps that are ever active are Safari & Email.
Any ideas?  Should I just accept defeat, eBay this one and buy a new one?

  • I'd like to update my first generation ipad to iSO4

How can I update my first generation iPad to iSO4?

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

  • Is there a problem with the OS 5.1 update for first generation iPads?

Double clicking my home button sends my first generation iPad into a black loading screen. The four finger swipe does the same thing. I haven't found a way to access the open programs without this happening.

    zphelj,
it reads as though you have a corrupted Mavericks installation at the moment. You can try this: boot your MacBook Pro into Recovery mode by holding down a Command key and the R key as it starts up. Once the Mac OS X Utilities menu appears, select Disk Utility. On the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window, select your internal disk’s boot partition (typically called “Macintosh HD”). On the right-hand side, press the Verify Disk button if it’s not greyed out; if it is greyed out, or if it reports that errors were found, press the Repair Disk button. Once the verification/repair is completed, exit Disk Utility and select Restart from the Apple menu to restart in normal mode. Are you able to run the 10.9.3 update now?

  • HT1222 How do I update my first generation iPad without the software update button in the general settings menu?

When I go to my app store the store will load but nothing within the store will load. I haven't updated my Ipad in a long time because the computer died I would use. I have tried different things but can not find a way to update to the new operating systems which is what I believe is causing my problems in the app store.

The Settings > General > Software Update option only appears when you have iOS 5+ installed, if you have iOS 4 then you will need to do the update via your computer's iTunes.
Connect the iPad to your computer's iTunes and copy any purchases off the iPad to your computer via File > Transfer Purchases. You may also want to copy photos and any important documents off the iPad as well e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case. You can then force a backup of the iPad by right-clicking the iPad 'Device' on the left-hand side of iTunes and selecting 'Backup'.
Then start the update by selecting the iPad on the left-hand side of iTunes, and on the Summary tab on the right-hand side clicking the Check For Updates button
    Updating to iOS 5+ : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4972
A first gen iPad should update to iOS 5.1.1 (which is the only version that is 'signed' by Apple).

  • HT4972 Why can't I update my first generation iPad to iOS 5?

Or how do I clear the old iOS and download the new iOS 5?
I have sync'd with my PC.  Is there another way to back it up?
Once done, what are the steps to do the update?

What happens when you use the instructions on the page that you posted from ? You have a recent version of iTunes on your computer, and are you getting any error messages when trying to update ?
To update via your computer's iTunes, connect the iPad to it and copy any purchases off the iPad to your computer via File > Devices > Transfer Purchases. You may also want to copy photos and any important documents off the iPad as well e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case. You can then force a backup of the iPad via the File > Devices > Back Up menu option.
Then start the update by selecting the iPad on the left-hand sidebar (you can enable the left-hand sidebar on iTunes 11 on a PC via control-S), and on the Summary tab on the right-hand side of the iTunes click the Check For Updates button.

You can update the iOS to 5.1.1 max.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily.  Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update.

  • I have a first generation ipad that I gave to my father.  He wants to download a few things and it says that he can't because he needs the new ios update.  When I try to download it it says that I can't.  Is the older version IPADS unable to update?

I have a first generation IPad and it won't let me download unless I update to the new ios system.  When I go to do that it won't let me do that either. What advise can you offer?  Thanks

Maybe a little more info would be helpful. How are you trying to update the iPad? What model iPad it is and what version of the iOS is on it now?

  • First Generation ipad stuck on ios 5.1.1. I am not able to update to a newer version because it believes the Ipad is at its most update version.

    Hello all,
My mother in law has recently acquired a new ipad and has given me her first generation ipad. Very excited! I have run into an issue though... The ipad is unable to update to the newest version of ios and is stuck on ios 5.1.1. Whether I plug the ipad in or try to update via wifi, it prompts me that it is running on the most up to date version.
Has anyone seen this problem before? Can anyone help me fix the issue?
    Thanks,
    Luke

See the chart below to determine whether you can upgrade your device and what you can upgrade to. If you do not have a Software Update option present on your iDevice, then you are trying to upgrade to iOS 5 or higher. You will have to connect your device to your computer and open iTunes in order to upgrade.

  • A. Using first generation ipad ios421 and want to get updated to ios6. I'm not being prompted to update on iPad itself and can't find update in app store. How can I fix this problem?

I'm using a first generation iPad that's running iOS 421. Need to update to 6.1 but am not being prompted by iPad and cannot locate in app store. How do I fix this?

iOS upadates are NOT in the App Store. Also, 1st gen iPads do not run iOS 6. 5.1.1 is the most recent version for that model.
You will need to connect the iPad to a computer running itunes in order to update form anything prior to 5.0. Update over WiFi wasn't available until 5.0.
