Trouble updating original iPhone

I have the first iPhone and I am having a lot of difficulty trying to update it. It currently is version 2.2.1 and iTunes tells me that I can update my phone to version 3.1.3, but whenever I try to do so, it doesn't let me. The first time I ever tried updating my iPhone it went through the whole process, but at the very end, after two hours, a message popped up saying that the update failed. Today I tried again, but when I clicked 'update' it only said that iTunes was already updated and nothing about my iPhone. After several more tries iTunes froze numerous times and did not recognize my iPhone when I plugged it in.
Is this because you can no longer update the original iPhone? Or is it something else?
I read about backing up and restoring the iPhone, and I was able to successfully back it up a few hours ago, but I am a bit hesitant on going through the restoring process because iTunes is acting up right now.
Any sort of help would be appreciated.

Sorry to hear your having problems, and I'm not sure what the cause might be. The information I have is that 3.1.3 is the latest version of the iOS that you can run on your iPhone.
The only thing I can think if is if there is not enough free space on your iPhone, that could be causing issues with the installer.

When I use the tutorial to upgrade my phone, it tells me to go to Software Updates which is not available which is not available on my general settings.

That is only a feature of iOS 5 or later... If you have iOS 4... See Here...

I am having trouble updating my iphone software. The instructions take me in an endless loop. Says sync is complete, but update does not occur.

I have updated Itunes, backed-up iphone to itunes, but can't update software. When I click update, it takes me back through the syncing process. I have synced wiht Itunes 5 times now and still no update to my iphone software.

When you connect and it says "backing up iPhone" at the top of the iTunes window, there should be a small "x" to the right of the message that will stop the backup. It will then allow you to progress to syncing and updating the iPhone. Once you're updated, try the backup process again to make sure that everything is ok.

Unable to update original iPhone to OS 2.1

I updated iTune to 8.0, dock my iPhone and click "Check for Update". The message came back saying "The version of iPhone Software (2.0) is the current version". iTune does not show the OS 2.1 available, any idea?

This happened to mine the first time as well. I think you just need to check again or remove it from the dock and put it back and it should find that there's an update.

Here is what worked for me:
My usb hub, being usb2, was too fast. I moved the wire to a usb port directory on my pc. That is a usb1 port which is slow enough to run your snyc.
