Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts or Users & Groups on 10.7) and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.

after yesomite upgrade my iPhoto wont upgrade and open
Try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete the contents the following folder: User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: For Mavericks and Yosemite, go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:
where you can check the Show Library Folder checkbox. -

IPhoto wont open library after upgrade
I just updated to iLife 11 and iPhoto will not open. I get the following message:
You can’t open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto.
This library must be upgraded by the iPhoto Library Upgrader application before you can use it with iPhoto. Please reinstall iPhoto from your iLife disc.
Where do I get the iPhoto Library Upgrader application from?James:
Make a temporary, duplicate copy of the library and try the three fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache files that are located in your Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select options #1, #2 and #6.
Fix #3
Rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
Hopefully one of these will work and you won't have to resort to Fix #4, starting over with a new library and importing the original files from the current library. -
Having trouble updating to latest Mavericks update
Is anyone having trouble updating their older iMac to the latest Software Update? I am getting a hanging "Preparing OS X Update" screen that goes nowhere after much waiting. Tried downloading again and still not installing.
Hello TripletDad
If the update is not taking, then reinstall OS X Mavericks. As a precautionary, I recommend backing up before you go through with that reinstallation, even though it will not erase anything.

9.2 wont upgrade library
I get this message everytime I open I photo
The photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto.
I click upgrade and it wont do anythingTry trash that file:
Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder.
(On 10.7: Hold the option (or alt) key while clicking on the Go menu in Finder to access the User Library)
(Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
What's the plist file?
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101. -
IPhoto just "upgraded" library and "erased" everything
MacBook Pro Retina 15 (Mid 2012)
Yosemite 10.10.1
2.3 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory 8GB
iPhoto 9.6 (910.29)
Library: ~42,000 Photos (~177GB)
I keep my library on my external HD and have been meaning to make a backup just in case something like this happened.
The other day, I opened my library and everything was fine. Then it froze up and I shut it down, I don't remember if I force quit or not. When I went to reopen iPhoto there was the gray loading icon in the middle and the pointer turned into the pinwheel. I let it run for a little and then nothing happened so I force quit. Tried again.
Ended up holding CMD + OPTN when opening iPhoto to do a rebuild but it never seemed to work.
Got home, cleared space on my ext HD to duplicate my iPhoto library. Opened iPhoto again when I had free time during the snow day yesterday and it brought up a message saying that the library or iPhoto needed to be upgraded and it won't be compatible with previous versions or something like that.
iPhoto opened and it was empty! So I checked the iPhoto file/folder and it still said 177GB so I knew my photos were still there.
NOW I was able to do a proper rebuild and I worked my way down to that through the four option provided by iPhoto.
End result: All photos (assumed because it says ~42,000+) are now in a Recovered folder in iPhoto but all Albums, Events, Faces and any other form of organization is missing. I don't want to have to redo the past 4 years of organizing.
Also, I still have the iPhoto library copied (pre-rebuild albeit post-damage.)
I have also downloaded iPhoto Library Manager and it manages to show the Events and albums but they have nothing in them. They all show "(0)"
I would like to recover the file(s) that organized my iPhoto library. Please help! Thanks. No backup unfortunately. Is there a way to dig for a file that contains the Albums, Events etc. data?
Here are the dialogs that have popped up when trying to Repair then Rebuild:

Updated to latest iTunes version now library is gone
Help
I updated my iTunes this morning to the latest version 7.1.0.59
Now ALL the songs in my library are gone. Why did this happen and is there NO way to get the songs on my iPOD back to the iTunes library????Well, it's possible that it's in a different location on your computer than "My Music".
You might want to try searching your computer for "iTunes" (a lot of results might come up, but just look for a folder called "iTunes", not all of the installation files).
If that doesn't seem to turn up anything, then the best idea would be to transfer the content from your iPod to your computer.
First, you'll need to prevent iTunes from automatically syncing with your iPod and deleting everything off of it.
To do that, follow these steps:
1 - Open iTunes.
2 - Connect your iPod to your computer.
3 - Basically as soon as your iPod begins to display "Do Not Disconnect", begin to press and hold the Shift and Ctrl keys on your keyboard together simultaneously.
Continue to hold these keys for about 20 seconds after your iPod is showing up in the Source List in iTunes.
After you've done this, click on your iPod's name in the Source List, and under the "Summary" tab, tick the "Manually manage" option for your iPod. Click the “Apply” button in the bottom-right corner to save your changes.
Now onto the transferring.
There are a few different ways to copy your iPod's songs to your computer, but probably the most straightforward method is to download a third-party program that can copy the songs from your iPod to your computer.
I would suggest that you try YamiPod. It's free, and I've heard it recommended a lot.

Year-old setup, much trouble updating to latest (many attempts so far)
In brief: I'm about a year behind on Arch with a production server that would be a gigantic pain to migrate to a fresh install. Some updates require a glibc that requires a filesystem more recent than the one I have, which I can't update to because I'm still not even up to systemd and such, and I can't update to systemd and such because there are file conflicts with the old filesystem. It seems like a catch-22 to me; I don't know what to do and would really appreciate some direction.
In full: First of all, yes, I know this post about how to get through the filesystem change to /bin, /sbin, /usr/sbin.
However, I am running into some problems that seem to total to a catch-22 when I try to do it.
First of all, my setup is so old that when I run (from the above post)
pacman -Qqo /bin /sbin /usr/sbin | pacman -Qm -
then
pacman -Sy
and then the preceding command again, I have new packages added. In particular:
# pacman -Qqo /bin /sbin /usr/sbin | pacman -Qm -
error: cannot determine ownership of directory '/bin'
error: cannot determine ownership of directory '/sbin'
error: cannot determine ownership of directory '/usr/sbin'

You can see the old initscripts, libsystemd, systemd-tools packages still on my server.
The problem that I am running across is that some of these packages, such as dcore and systemd-tools, are outdated and no longer in the repositories.
If, however, I try to upgrade those, such as upgrading to systemd:

or something other file conflict.
I've tried moving the contents of /sbin, /bin, /usr/sbin to /usr/bin and then using /usr/bin/ln to make symbolic links to replace those directories and then going ahead with
# pacman -Syu --ignore filesystem,bash
# pacman -S bash
# pacman -Su
However, I've tried three or four different ways of doing this (god bless VPS backups) and always end up with a completely broken system that doesn't even boot afterwards.
As a last resort, I tried simply uninstalling all repositories that would leave files in /bin, /sbin, /usr/sbin, symlinking those three directories to /usr/bin, and then trying the update. /lib still gives me a problem, however; I tried moving the contents of /lib to /usr/lib and symlinking /lib to /usr/lib, but once I move the contents of /lib, as expected, nothing works. If I do pacman -Syuf, it all goes straight to fell.
I feel as though I am stuck. Is there something I'm missing? Is there a solution, or will I be stuck migrating to a fresh install? I could really use some advice.

Yes, it is past the /lib symlink upgrade. I got 99% of the way there with the various bin directories and /lib was the very last obstacle, and I just could not figure out a way around that.
However, one of my tries did leave me with the /lib symlink. I don't recall how I get there and didn't appreciate its importance, so I've been unable to duplicate it; since I saw it once, I have hope that there is a solution.
Migrating this server and all its various user data, git repositories, SQL databases, and such would take me a couple days. I got 99% of the way there and hope that there's a way I can get this done in a couple hours, given the right sequence of steps.

Iphoto wont open - library not loaded
I recently had an issue where both Aperture and iphoto couldn't load, the message said "iphoto cannot be opened because of a problem" and then I got the error message below. It didn't even load the app, but bounce it once and then post the error message
Had a poke around, but cant for the life of me figure out why it cant see the Library. I have repaired permissions and tried others, but still not working.
Am i missing something really simple?
Thanks in advance

That piece of support framework needed for iPhoto can't be found or is broken.
Try re-install iPhoto
To re-install iPhoto
1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5: Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows: In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
/var/db/receipts/
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store you can find it in your Purchases List.
If that doesn't help you need to reinstall the OS

Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!

my iphoto wont open since i updated my mac, please help? it says i need to install an iphoto library upgrader which I have installed but still cant see my photos.
What version of iPhoto are you using? 9.6 is the current version.
Do a backup.
Quit the application.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.iPhoto.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Restart, open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.
