Trouble Upgrading to Lion

Help, I have attempted to upgrade to Lion but now on the restart it seems the system has stalled. The pinwheel has been spinning for almost 2hours on my startup screen. Should I power my system off or is this part of the Lion upgrade? How long should I let this go on for before powering the system off?

Trouble upgrading Mountain Lion

I am trying to upgrade from Lion 10.7.5 to newest but I can't get past selecting an app. when the dialog comes up requesting it. I see no "app" for the OS to select.

You go to the app store and, on the first page, take a look at the right column - ML is right there:
Click on it, pay for it, and you can download it. You don't need an app - it's an OS.

Unable to restore to 10.6.8 after upgrade to Lion

After my troubles upgrading to Lion (see Cannot login after Lion Update), I decided to try a restore to 10.6.8 on my TimeMachine.
I inserted the 10.6 upgrade DVD, booted off of it, and restored to a TM backup dated before I even purchased / downloaded Lion. That restore took a few hours and appeared to proceed without a hitch. When trying to reboot, though, I'm never able to get past the initial grey screen with the Apple logo and the spinning gear. I never see the login screen. I've left it in this state for about 5 minutes with no visible progress.
I'm concerned that somehow the 10.7 install's secret hidden restore partition is preventing a TimeMachine restore, which is _very_ concerning.
I have successfully used the method above (booting off 10.6 DVD and restoring) before on this machine (e.g. when upgrading the hard drive). So I have some evidence that this was successful before the Lion install.
Needless to say (and I'm apparently not alone), the Lion upgrade appears to have not only made my system unusable but unrestorable.
Has anyone else encountered this sort of situation? Is there some different procedure I need to use for this kind of a restore?
Is anyone at Apple aware of testing the scenario of restoring to 10.6.8 from 10.7? It would seem important to be sure that TimeMachine worked to restore to a point before the upgrade.

Thanks for the responses. To clarify, I have done just about everything I could imagine to do a clean install and have now spoken with AppleCare for over four hours following their suggestions. This includes:
Booting from the 10.6 install disk, repartitioning the HD with a single partition (to attempt to remove any evidence of the Lion recovery partition from the borked Lion install), and, using the "Restore From Time Machine" option when booting off the 10.6 DVD, restoring a backup
Booting from the 10.6 install disk, repartitioning the HD, doing a clean install of OS X 10.6. This brings me to a clean install; any attempt to at this point do a Migration using either the Migration Manager or again booting off the 10.6 DVD and restoring a backup returns me to the same non-functional scenario (spinning gear forever on system startup)
Booting from the 10.6 install disk, repartitioning the HD, doing a clean install of OS X 10.6, attempting to copy files from my TM images by hand; not really going to result in a usable system state, esp. when it comes to things in ~/Library/Application Support.
This is not an issue of not doing a clean install as far as I can see. Unless every backup on my drive is bad for the last month, this is not an issue of a bad backup, since I've now tried many of them. (The less pleasant scenario is that FV / TM backups are silently writing unrestorable backups). Unless the reparitioning does not remove the Lion recovery partition, it is not a question of the Lion recovery partition lying around. I have asked several folks about whether the Lion QA process included attempting to restore a 10.6 OS. I have no answer on that; I would be disturbed if it didn't include such a step; making sure you can return to a previous known good state after an install is pretty fundamental.
I'm at a bit of a loss at this point. I've tried everything I can think of to get back to a known good system state after following best practices on backups and suggestions from AppleCare. As far as I can see, my TM backups are unrestorable and there's been no indication of this the entire time I've been relying on TM as a safety net.

I have the entire CS4 Master Collection on this machine.
Have not tried the other programs yet.

Can't always connect to remote speakers since upgrading to lion

In one fell swoop I did a lot of upgrading, and ever since I haven't been able to reliably connect to any remote speakers using iTunes on my iMac. From iTunes (or the Remote app on the phone or iPad) I can see remote speakers, but I cannot connect. From iTunes, I just get the stripy progress bar, and it won't ever go away unless I cancel out. From the remote app, it just becomes unrepsonsive.
Context:
I have a iMac with OSX Lion, that I upgraded from Snow Leopard a few weeks ago. At about the same time, I updated iTunes to 10.5 from the last 10.4 release to be able to get the IOS 5 update on my and my wife's phones.
I have an Airport Extreme connected to our broadband, with 3 airport expresses in various places in our house connected on a wireless network to stereos for remote speakers. The iMac is connected to the Airport Extreme via ethernet. After upgrading the OS and iTunes, I got a notice that there was a firmware update for my two most recent airports (the Extreme and one of the expresses). They are running version 7.6 of the firmware, the other two airports are running 6.3.
There has been no change to the physical environment -- no sources of interference or anything like that. I can play music from the Music app on my phone to any of the remote speakers, there is no problem there.
About half the time, if I restart everything (wireless base stations, and then the computer) I can get the remote speakers to work. However, the next time the computer wakes up from sleep mode, I have the same connection problem described above.
Has anyone else experiences these sorts of troubles? I have seen some similar problems with older versions of all these applications and OS's -- and the solution there was to turn off ipV6 -- however, it doesn't look like that's an option now. Is this an identified bug, and is there a fix on the way? Is there anything I can do in the meantime?

Well, after some experimentation and internet-lookin', I deduced that is possibly a wi-fi problem. It seems that many people are having wi-fi problems since upgrading to Lion, and although I'm not connecting directly to my wireless network, it does form a pretty big chunk of my setup describe above.

Essentially what it has you do is to create a new network location, name it, and then renew your DHCP lease. This seems to have worked for the time being.

I just upgraded to Lion and now cannot add attachments to my emails in Safari or use the search window. What gives?

I had been holding off upgrading to Lion because of the bad press, but discovered that I could no longer receive email on my Mac because my iPhone had been moved to iClound by an Apple tech when it had to be replaced, and my Snow Leopard version wouldn't support iCloud. So I upgraded to Lion and immediately began having trouble. First I was told that several of my software applications were incompatible and had been removed. Then I discovered that Safari (apparently the latest version 5.1.3) had lost functionality. I can't attach anything to my emails and the search window is grayed out and inoperable. This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box.
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
As Guest, test. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on some Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.) Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

I have leopard and want to upgrade to lion. I have a macbook about 3 years old and wonder if I should just get a new macbook pro ($$$) instead. Is it worth the headache to upgrade to snow leopard and then lion? How does lion perform on an intel core duo 2

I have Lion installed on a Mini with a C2D processor. The same Mini has Snow Leopard on another partition and there is no noticeable difference in operational speed between the two OS's. But compared to my new MBPro 17" with a 2.83GHz i7, the Mini running Lion is noticeably slower. So if you can afford anew MBPro, then I would get it because you will probably be unhappy with the performance of Lion on the older MBPro. The other benefit of getting a new MBPro with Lion is that if you have any Power PC applications currently on the old MBPro, which will not operate in Lion, then you still have the ability to use them. Many users got stung by upgrading to Lion, only to find they could no longer use the older PPC applications.

I phoned the number above and purchased a license. The process worked fine, the Apple Tech took my particulars, I received an email right away acknowelging my purchase and one from the Tech giving me his details so that I could come back to him if I needed help. But when I went to download Lion it would not download because I do not have the requirements to load it, mine is an Intel Core Duo instead of an Intel 2 Duo or later.
The clerk in the Apple store in Vancouver checked the details of my machine and told me I could load it if I upgraded the memory. But apparently that was incorrect. The Tech I who sold me Lion checked too and said no, my iMac is not capable of supporting Lion. So a plus and minus answer. I did get Lion, but was unable to load it, yours is a 2008 model so you should have no trouble. Why not try the number or the international website above from Steve, nothing ventured, nothing gained. I will just keep saving my pennies toward a new iMac!!

It'll likely replace the printer drivers too since some older drivers may rely on Rosetta, which Lion eliminates. Along with new drivers, you may loose printing capabilities, as I did with a legacy Epson printer. Since you're in the Mac Pro forum, if you actually have a Mac Pro, it might be wise to install an additional hard disk and run the Lion upgrade on that. Try it out and see if you actually get an improvement. If not, you've still got Leopard to retreat to and an extra disk to back up on.

I really hope that Apple will do the right/ethical thing and give recent (within the 8-9 months) purchasers of macbook, macbook pros, macbook air, and people who just bought single OS copies of Lion OS-either a free copy of Mountain Lion or a huge discount price on the OS ($5.00 max ). Let's be honest here....Mountain Lion is the patched up Lion. Apple couldn't release an update large enough to fix the problems with Lion so they instead created a new OS. They know that is the truth.
As someone who just bought a macbook pro that came pre-installed with Lion (had no choice really but to accept that or completly wipe it clean and try to put on Snow Leopard, but I was hesitant to because of being warned not to try that on the pre-installed macbook pros.) I don't feel it is right that I would have to pay for another OS when I was already supposed to have a functional OS included with my recent major purchase. Let's think about it for second: when I got a powerbook g4 around 2004/05 I paid about the same price as this macbook pro i now own. With that I got the lap top, the installer OS cds (a functional OS I might add), manual, stickers, a vga adapter, s-output cord, ac adapter, ac extension cable, and phone cord. With the 2011 macbook pro I got the laptop, manual, stickers, ac adapter, ac extension cable, and cloth to wipe off my screen. I didn't get any s-video output or vga adapter, and I'm actually glad that they didn't give me any lion installer cds because that would have been a waste of optical disc. What came free in a box over 6 years ago (vga adapter display port) is now $30 extra at the apple store. Also, no s-video. So I can't hook it up to an external monitor or tv. (and no, I can't just go and buy a fake one on amazon because I have analog so i would on top of that buy a pc converter box. ) I honestly wouldn't mind buying the converter box... had I gotten a free vga display adapter with my laptop. Also let's compare a minor difference in applecare: back then I got a receipt and a box with some info and a applecare test cd that was good for diagnostic utility testing. while maybe a bit old fashioned, I still like having cds that I can use for testing problems. This time, I didn't get any info box or cds, or a receipt for that matter--well i did get an email saying I had extendedapple 3 year but I never had the chance to make a phone confirmation that proves I am in service. I feel that is a bit risky sending people home without a hard copy of your purchase. They could just claim you didn't buy it. maybe i'm just old fashioned that way. To be clear, i can't compare the actual service of applecare of present day and former because so far I haven't had enough use of it to compare it yet.
What I'm getting at is that with the money they saved on gypping me with included accessories and a function OS, surely they could afford to right the situation by giving me a free copy of the new OS Mountain Lion. I might add, that way back when I had my powerbook g4 I went into to apple's genius bar one day and was trying to get an issue fixed regarding the itunes razor phone I had just purchased (way back before iphone had just come out) the music wasn't transferring from my computer to my phone. The guy was very very nice and he said he couldn't fix the problem with the phone (the usb turned out to be damaged) and he upgraded my panther to tiger for free!
That is an example of good customer service. That is example of keeping loyal apple customers.

I had the logic board in my iBook 800/12.1" (Nov. '02) replaced 3 times. After the 4th failure occured a couple of weeks ago, I called Apple Support and requested a replacement machine. They refused, and were fairly rude about it.
So, in a moment of desperation, I sent an email to Steve Jobs. I did not demand a replacement machine. I simply said that I was extremely displeased with the quality of my iBook and I would no longer be purchasing or advocating Apple products. I wished Mr. Jobs the best of luck in Apple's future endeavors.
Two days later, I received a call from Apple's Corporate Executive Relations team. The woman I spoke with apologized profusely for my troubles with the iBook. She explained the logic board replacement program to me in great detail, and then, without any prompting from me, asked if a new iBook G4 (as a replacement) would cause me to reconsider leaving the platform. **** yes. So, I'm typing this post on a brand new 1Ghz, 12.1" iBook G4
Needless to say, despite the trouble with the machine, and the heartburn of dealing with Apple Support - in the end I'm left feeling fairly impressed with Apple. In the end, they did the right thing, and kept a customer.

i have just bought my first mac and have been told in pc world that i can get a free upgrade to lion, but it would appear that this is only for those in the u.s. and canada. is this true? also from reading the discussions it seems that lion is not a good thing. i am already regretting my decision to go to a mac.

I have found that both Linux and Mac (unix) are capable of reading "deep" folders while win 32 will have issues, your it people are clearly wrong. I run a network with both win/mac. And as long as the win servers/pc's that have shares are set to allow apple file sharing in their folder properties. And the macs are set to allow smb there should absolutely no trouble with you accessing anything across the platforms, heck, from a Mac to a win pc on some occasions you don't even need to include a "domain" name to log on to, and you can create aliases and make your own shortcuts etc... So you don't have to manually connect each time you boot up etc... But that's all personal preferences I suppose.
All I can tell you is that, I do it on a daily basis managing a small business. So your answer is yes you can.

Getting following Pop up error, since upgrading to Lion on iMac (but not on my iBook).

Since upgrading to Lion on my iMac, I keep getting the following Pop up image error message. Translated in English it reads: The connexion to the server has failed. URL type files are not recognised.
Curiously enough, I upgraded my iBook with Lion also ... and I don't get this problem at all ! It does not cause any trouble, everything is working, BUT it is a Royal pain, as I have to click on OK twice to shut it down and it comes back up again every 10-15 minutes !! Can someone help ? Thank you.

Blu-ray can't communicate with DHCP server since I upgraded to Lion

Hi gang, hope someone can help me out. I have a Sony Blu-Ray DVD BDP-N460 that I normally use to connect to the internet and watch streaming Netflix, etc. with no problems, until I upgraded to Lion. Now, for some reason, I get an error message: "Having trouble communicating with the DHCP server." I use a wired connection directly to my AirPort Extreme, and I also use a Motorola SBV5220 SURFboard Cable Modem. I haven't changed my internet servings on my Mac.
Under system settings on my Blu-Ray on-screen display, it says "Physical connection OK, Local Settings OK, Internet Connection Failed." I've tried umpteen times going through the automated setup on my Blu-Ray, where the system automatically detects settings, etc...everything I did when I first set the system up. And I've tried countless manual setting combinations. No luck. This is really weird because I had no problems in the past...the culprit seems to be Lion because this glitch happened simultaneously with my upgrade.
I am not a networking expert so any help will be greatly appreciated.
I'm running Lion 10.7.1 on an iMac 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 2GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM.

Update: So here's what's happened. I figured I would ditch the Sony and get a $99 Apple TV. I still had the same connection issues.
(FYI my network is now set up like this: Motorola Cable Modem via Ethernet to Time Capsule via Ethernet to Mac. In a separate studio, Airport Extreme wirelessly connects to Time Capsule; Airport Express connects to Extreme via Ethernet cable. For this discussion, only Time Capsule applies, not Extreme as mentioned above.)
I called support, and they had me read my Time Capsule's IP Address, Subnet Mask, Router, and DNS Server numbers to them. Then, they had me manually input those numbers into my Apple TV (via my TV screen), number-for-number, EXCEPT they had me increase the last digit of the IP Address by one (for example, my Time Capsule's IP was 10.0.1.2, and they had me make my Apple TV's IP Address 10.0.1.3).
I assume these settings would work on the Sony DVD. I'm so happy with the Apple TV that I don't even want to go back and try.
Sorry, Apple, for blaming the whole thing on Lion. Not really sure why all this happened out of the blue though.
Hope this helps somebody. I'm a happy camper now. Apple TV rocks.

Upgrade to lion causes frequent forced quits in adobe software

After recent upgrade to Lion OS I have trouble running Lightroom 4 and Photoshop CS 6 Beta. Lightroom 4 frequently crashes upon opening. Photoshop CS 6 is unable to open an image file from Finder, Bridge or Lightroom and also freezes up. iMac no longer recognizes wireess keyboard strokes. Have tried disk utility repairs and various restarts with key strokes to reset but they don't work after a short while. Any suggestions?
