Trouble using AirDrop to share files with an older Macbook

Hi all,
First off, I have tried researching this issue on other websites and in Google with no solution. I have a 2012 MacBook Pro running OS X v. 10.9.3, a 2008 Macbook running OS X v. 10.9.2 and I cannot get them to exchange files via AirDrop. Has anyone found a solution to this? Also related, I cannot get either laptop to exchange files with the iPhone 5 or iPad 2, both running current iOS. Though the iPhone 5 and iPad 2 both exchange files over AirDrop and with other iOS devices flawlessly. I am truly at a loss, I have followed every trouble shooting guide I can find. Any help or recommendations would be appriciated!
- Chris

Chris,
if you have a MacBook5,2, then it’s a 2009 model. You can try this possibility from the magical fix department: open up Terminal as your usual user, and give it the following commands:
defaults write com.apple.NetworkBrowser BrowseAllInterfaces 1
killall Finder
After Finder restarts, does AirDrop work any better on your MacBook?
If that made no difference, you can undo the change above with the following commands:
defaults delete com.apple.NetworkBrowser BrowseAllInterfaces
killall Finder

  • Using FTP to share files with 3 Windows computers - Not Working Anymore

My office is trying to share files with a number of computers, both Mac and PC. The files are housed on a Mac OS 10 version 10.6, and I've enabled both AFP and FTP sharing. The macs in the office connect just fine, but yesterday, after three weeks of working perfectly, the Windows machines stopped connecting to the Mac. They get a "The Connection with the server was reset" error. We don't use an FTP client - I just had the PCs connect to the Mac by typing ftp://address in their explorer window.
I've tried restarting all computers, disabling and re-enabling FTP sharing, and I've triple checked permissions, etc. Is there anything else I should be investigating? I'm trying to look into our firewall here, but since our computers are rentals and another company controls our internet access I'm not sure what I can do there. (I tried setting up workgroups, but said company won't give me administrative access over the PCs or access to the firewall, and there's no IT dept to speak of)
As I'm sure you can tell, I'm just a regular old office monkey who inherited the "IT" job with no IT experience, so I apologize if any part of this question is stupid.

I know just about nothing about this, but common dianostic practices include looking at the logs.
Either use Applications -> Utilities -> Console, which has a search function that might make this easier.
Or go looking around /var/log (which you can use Unix 'grep' to do your searching ). Then again, NOT ALL logs are in /var/log, and Console knows where more logs are located.
2 logs that might be a good starting point would be /var/log/messages and /var/log/secure

  • How do I use AirDrop to share files and documents between my iPad and computer?

Even directly plugging in my two devices to eachother I cannot get my documents onto both of my devices unless I go through a rediculously long route to do so. The only reason I got the IPAD was to NOT have to go save afile on my computer, email it to myself, switch to my ipad, open my email, open attachment into Textius (the app I PAY FOR), save it onto the device. I have 26 items to do this to. I can do this faster on my phone because my comuter recgnizes it as a device at least i can drag and drop there! I paid too much money to deal with this ****. air drop doesnt work for me and I would like to understand why in the world it doesnt work between my own devices.

AirDrop does not work cross-platform. Not sure where you got that impression. It only works OS X to OS X, or iOS to iOS.
In the upcoming major software releases this Fall, iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite, AirDrop will work cross-platform, but not right now.

I have lightroom 5.7. Now I have apple TV to connect my Mac to the TV scree. I wish to do a slide show on the TV. However, on the Mac, using ITunes to share photos with the TV, I cannot locate all photo files. What is the best way to save the slide show and put it where the Mac sharing can find it? So far, I made on one folder in Lightroom, put some photos there and I found them easily. Can this be done with a slide show? Please help quickly! Also worried that the photos I put on the new folder are hard to find afterwards, when the show is done. Where do they go when I delete from from the new folder?I am not alone

Not that I'm aware of. You just export JPEG copies to a folder that you can point iTunes to. For instance, I have created a folder in my Pictures folder called Apple TV. And within that folder I have other folders of pictures that I can choose from in iTunes to share with Apple TV. But there doesn't seem to be any way to share a Lightroom slideshow. If you have laid to create a video file that would probably work. Apple TV is a little clunky in my opinion. Some things are a little more difficult to do now than they were a while back. I probably haven't provided you with much help, but just keep experimenting and I think you will figure it out.

I have imported my pictures into aperture, how do I export into jpeg files so i can share files with friends who dont use aperture ?

If you want the same export settings on some or all of the images you can select all that have the same export requirements and export them as a group.
If all the images have the same requirements then you can select them all and run the export command.

No. There is no iDisk with iCloud. You can use one of several third-party alternatives like SugarSync, ADrive, or MediaFire.

iCloud does not provide general file storage and sharing. You will need to find a third-party alternative - this page examines some options:

Since I use Mac os x mountain lion it is no more possible to share files with my pc windows 7. Does somebody know how to solve this problem? I have been answered by an Apple technician that with the new Mountain Lion the problem was with Windows. I am not convinced.

I have renamed my pc and everything is ok with the file sharing SMB. Both my iMac and my pc can share files very easily.

  • How should i share file with other devices such as nokia, blackberry and etc using bluetooth

I want to share  files between other deivce such as nokia but couldnt, could u help me tell how can i share files with other devices???

@AKRBTN: Thanks for the reply and info.
That is a solution, but it really isn't viable.
It is sad that apple refuses to support this.
A simple example: Sitting somewhere with no signal and you want to share a file (photo) with your colleague or friend, who happens to be right next to you.
Or even if there is signal and you don't want to be paying fees or data charges.
Or you may be in a rehearsal studio and need to share that very important file and have no time to go outside and get signal and try to send the file, which then everyone else has to go outside and catch the signal and pay fees.
Anyway, I see that this is a dead end with apple, so I guess I will be back to carrying 2 phones around again.
    Peace,
    SB

  • Unable to share files with Windows

I have followed the instructions on my iMac to a "T", but am unable to share files with the wireless laptop on my network. The ethernet-wired pc can see the iMac fine and does not have to use a password to view the shared files. I must be doing something wrong with passwords - can someone please help? Thanks!

    G'day v3ofushere,
You may need to provide a little more information so that we can assist you!
What version of Windows are you running on the other machines?  XP, Vista, 7, 8 or 8.1?  EDIT: Scratch that - I just saw that it is a Windows 7 PC from the subject!!! (DOH!).
Are your Windows computers on a domain, or are they running as a WORKGROUP?
When you say that you can't connect to the network, does this mean that you are having trouble connecting to file shares?
What are you seeing when you attempt to connect?  Any error messages?  Or is it simply failing to accept the login credentials and shaking the dialog box at you?
    Cheers,
    Rodney

  • Using fusion and sharing files with mac

I am getting a Mac Airbook and am going to be running Fusion from VMWare.  I have an external Western Digital drive that I want to use to transfer my files to the Mac.  Two questions:
    1.  Will the Passport software or at least the files - be recongnized by the Mac?
    2.  Does the Mac share the files with Fusion or do I need separate folders?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
    1. Your Mac will recognize the external drive without any problem if it's formatted with FAT, NTFS or exFAT. Note that OS X can't write into NTFS drives.
    2. Your Mac can share files with a virtual machine if you install VMware Tools onto the virtual machine

  • Still not sure how to share files with my friend's Windows PC?

I went through all the help pages concerning this, but it doesn't seem to help any. On our house internet connection, both our computers use the same IP address. I tried connecting directly to his computer using ethernet cable, but his computer never showed up. Our workgroup name should be the same, his is WORKGROUP but I'm not sure how to officially make mine that. I went to Network in System Preferences and clicked on Advanced... then went to the WINS tab and it has workgroup in the workgroup box, does this mean my computer is using that workgroup name? I'm at a loss and would like to share files with my friend's computer.

    Do you have a router?
If not then sharing files will not be easy.

The add the Mac to the WORKGROUP
Applications > Utilities > Directory Access
    Select SMB/CIFS
    Click Configure
Change Workgroup to match the Windows Workgroup.

If you mean just moving files between a Mac and a PC with XP on it, get a USB flash drive, format it FAT32 (they usually come that way) and copy the files to that drive.
