Trouble using multiple xboxes through 1 router
My roommates and I have a WRT54G router set up with 3 xbox 360's (all wired). The problem is that we keep getting an error message due to strict NAT. However, when only 1 box is connected to live our NAT is open. When a second xbox is turned on the NAT changes between moderate and strict.
I've read a lot of posts on the subject of strict NAT but none of them really deal with multiple xboxes. We've never had a problem with our connection when multiple computers are accessing the internet, only the 360's.
Is there a way I can fix this? or are we just running too many boxes and there isn't much we can do? if that's the case can someone recommend a better router to use with 3, 360's? I would certainly appreciate any help we can get.

My brothers and I have this same issue. We have 3 xbox 360's and only one can get NAT fully open for one and strict/moderate for the others. Which is correct because port forwarding can only be done for ONE IP address.
You can not port forward the same ports to three different IP's. That defeats the whole purpose.
Talking to xbox support is useless at best. So my next call will be to Linksys. I have scoured the net and only get threads stating the obvious on the issue.
So, if anyone has more than ONE xbox working behind a router and has OPEN nat on xbox live for ALL of them, please share.

This is trivial to do - just don't use Finder aliases.
Aliases are Mac OS X-specific and UNIX-based applications like apache don't know how to deal with them.
The solution is to use symbolic links, the original UNIX equivalent of the Mac's aliases.:

$ ln -s /Volumes/User1Drive user1
$ ln -s /Volumes/User2Drive user2
...</pre>
etc.
This will create a symbolic link from user1 to /Volumes/User1Drive. Now when anyone hits /user1 on your server they'll given the content on /Volume/User1Drive.
There is an alternative solution which doesn't use directory paths, but hostnames. It's possible to configure Apache's virtual hosts so that 'http://user1.server.com/' is based on /Volumes/User1Drive while 'http://user2.server.com/' is based on /Volumes/User2Drive, and so on.
This takes some configuration in DNS to point all the hostnames to the same IP address, but it's another option that can scale without the need of more IP addresses. -

Lots of trouble using multiple photoshop files in FCP 6ont
Hi, Eric here. I haven't been on this forum for a while (maybe that's a good thing!).
I'm working on a project that is incorporating photoshop (layered) files. There are 6 pictures on top of each other (each a different person, with the background cut away in Photoshop).
When I work with one of these files FCP runs a little slow. 2 or 3 files and it runs real slow. 4 or 5 files and it starts crashing every couple minutes. Now, it's at the point where the project literally won't even open. It opens for a brief moment, then before I can do anything it crashes. Other projects still open as normal.
As far as I know, my computer is not at fault (ie, 1.5 GB SDRAM, Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5). The computer is almost 5 years old but is running fine otherwise.
Is this normal or are there some settings I can change, something to upgrade?

EricThanks Randy. I did read the thread. I am zooming them but only very slightly. Like 12-15%. All resolutions are 300dpi I know that.
I'm anxious to try deleting the CMYK file from the timeline/project... IF IT WILL OPEN!!! This is the worst it has been. I've had this happen but usually at least after a restart the timeline will open. This time nothing. Honestly, I don't know if the project will ever open again, but I'll keep trying.
Otherwise, assuming PS files are 300 dpi, RGB, and not too large, is it common for FCP to get this bogged down when working with them? Just doesn't seem right.

A user is having trouble printing. Print jobs take FOREVER when they used to speed through (despite linked images, etc)
These are just some notes from our troubleshooting:
User was trying to print out InDesign document however during the flattening phase, the computer would stall and would not print out the document.
The document does not print out using double sided or single sided.
The first time I went out, all I did was a system restore and uninstalled mcafee security plus because we're on a university network and sometimes the firewall blocks network printing, and that worked. She tried to print again later and it went back to taking 30 minutes for a print job of about 19 pages. These print jobs used to take about 5 minutes at the most to print entirely, but they queued up immediately, versus now, it takes about 5 minutes just to get to the printer.
Further troubleshooting that I did on a separate day:
Printer was printing fine in November - problem started at some point this month (December)
Printing is fine elsewhere, including in Adobe Acrobat
I was able to print one page just fine - it had no images (tried to print the same page later, took forever)
Some of the images are very large (100MB+) photoshop files (again, they were there before and it printed fine) - these images are linked (with no link errors)
She prints to a network printer, but there's no firewall on (again, printing is fine elsewhere)
She's essentially printing with the default settings, she just centers her print, instead of the default layout.
Now even printing with the default print set (not changing any print settings at all) doesn't work. Jobs take 30 minutes. I can't figure out if it's file specific or where the problem is. Since she has no custom settings, my next option is to just do an uninstall and reinstall, but I'm worried that the problem will still be there. I was starting to think that maybe the file is just so corrupted from all the force quits that that's causing the problem, but... I'm running out of solutions.
Any help?I have only worked doing layout for one business in my past. In that job our department would sometimes experience slowdown in printing from time to time. However, we began to see extreme slowdowns over a month period. It was finally tracked down to two things. One was something about the RAID array going bonkers. The other was some of the CAT cabling going bad. It only affected large print jobs and copying large files through the network. Even so, it was not 100% of the time. Sometimes things went along smoothly.
Point is, have your IT people been invited in to experience the issue and see if anything in the network is causing at least latency issues?

Only you know what is on the disk.. if you have been running TM to the TC then it will have your backups.. are they important?? Otherwise it will be what you..or others in the house have copied to it.. is that important?
If the first aid has failed the disk then it could be a good idea to erase it.
Does the disk mount in finder so you can see the main directory? -

View Solution.OK, good. Uninstall all HP software from Start > All Programs > Hewlett-Packard. Then restart your PC.
Now, get the latest software for the 4500 from the "Support & Drivers" link at the top of this page and install it. Restart your PC.
Finally, from the same link on this page get the latest software for the b209 and install it.

Using SG300 directly as a router?
Hello, I am building a new home with several Cat6 ethernet ports wired throughout (at least one to each room) and I want to connect them all through a rock-solid reliable gigabit switch like the SG300 or SG200. I am also going to use wireless N (something like the E4200) but I would prefer not to use the wireless device as the router since I want a solid, reliable connection from my ethernet-connected devices and the Internet and I honestly don't trust consumer-level devices like the E4200 to be reliable without dropping my connection. I have computers that need a constant VPN connection and I have other computers that do bittor...umm, network intensive activity that usually bring wireless routers to their knees
So what I would really like is to connect the internet cable modem (Ubee) directly to the business-class switch (SG300 or SG200), and have that business-class switch do the routing and NAT to my entire network, and I'd just use the E4200 as a wireless access point. I'm not a network admin and the idea of the CLI scares me, but I can probably use it to at least switch the SG300 to Layer 3 mode...that looks simple enough. I'd definitely want to use a web GUI for everything else. From what I've read, the SG200 is a Layer 2 device so it couldn't be used as a router, but can the SG300 in Layer 3 be used as a router connected directly to the cable modem? Will it support NAT and UPnP and all of the other features that the E4200 would (minus the wireless of course)? For example one thing I will want is to be able to have multiple XBoxes connected to the switch all with an "Open NAT".
If the SG300 can't do this, what's the best rock-solid business class device that I can connect directly to the cable modem that will support things like UPnP and NAT?

Self Assigned IP from my macbook pro to xbox through ethernet...
I live in a college dorm and i have been using internet sharing through an ethernet cable to connect to xbox live and it has been working fine for months now, but has now recently decided to make everything difficult and it continuously just says self assigned IP address cannot connect to internet. Every video and forum I have tried reading generally refers back to something involving the router however in this case my wifi is working no problem its just the ethernet cable going to my xbox that has the self assigned IP problem. If anyone could help me it would be greatly appreciated, thank you!
It isn't clear what you are trying to do. Why are you connected to the Xbox? Is the Xbox suppose to share the internet through your mac?
Since there is so little information, I'm going to go through a lot of stuff you might already know.
You have two network interfaces on your Mac. en0 which is the cable and en1 which is the wireless.
IP addresses are assigned through a process called DHCP. When you have a self-assigned address there is no DHCP server.
The DHCP server -may- be on a router or it may be on several different devices such as a Unix computer (or Linux) specifically set up to provide DHCP addresses. Since you are in a dorm, is is quite likely a specifically configured host is providing DHCP.
Your wireless network will get a different DHCP address than your wired network. For example, 128.1.0.0/16 might be the network assigned to the wireless to support 253x253 different hosts (a lot of hosts and the main reason to keep DHCP off of the router). And something like 129.1.0.0/16 would be assigned to the wired network.
The DHCP server for the wireless network WILL NOT provide an address for en0.
NOTE: I have never used Apple's Internet Sharing and I -assume- that when you share that the Mac acts like a bridge.
I also assume that this is what you are attempting to do with your Xbox. This would mean that the Xbox would have to initiate a DHCP request for an address that is forwarded (bridged) through the Mac to the DHCP server. This request includes the Xbox hardware address. Now comes the part that is going to make you cry. MAC addresses are 48 bits and look like AB:CD:EF:12:34:56. The first 24-bits are assigned to a manufacturer and used for specific products. When the DHCP request gets to the DHCP server, it knows that the request is from an Xbox. Your campus may have decided that you've been playing too many games and does not respond with an IP address for the Xbox.
You can check this out by using a tool called tcpdump or you can install Wireshark. If you want to go down this rabbit hole, it is going to require quite a bit of time and you'll end up becoming quite well educated in how networking works. People go to school for years to understand this. :-)
Or, maybe you just forgot to ensure internet sharing was on.
If you have some other kind of wiring setup then perhaps you have a different problem.
BTW, when you plug the ethernet cable from the Xbox into the mac that "activates" it.
By default OSX is configured to use DHCP to provide an address.
If the Mac sends out DHCP requests over the ethernet cable and never gets a response it will then self-assign an address.
A self-assigned address cannot be used to get to the internet.
(But, I understand that it your Xbox that isn't working not the Mac, especially since you were able to post your question here.) -
Is it possible to use multiple proxies simulatneously?
I have access to four different proxy servers within my college. (Squid I think)
Each proxy has limitations on the number of simultaneous GET requests (4 I think. When I set anything higher
in Firefox images don't load, etc..) and allows only http and https traffic. I was thinking if it was possible to use
all/at least more than one proxy at a time to improve speeds.
Does wget/aria2c have this capability? To download segments of a file from different proxies simultaneously instead of just one?
I'd seen the manpages but as far as I can tell they use only one proxy server at a time (usually through environment variables)
In fact I'd be happy if I were able to get good download speeds for pacman updates using multiple proxies.
I've heard of network interface bonding but it looks like a lot of trouble to set it up (kernel recompilation! )

Just thought I'd know all possibilities before compiling kernels and stuff..I don't know if aria2 can use multiple proxies simultaneously, but if you want to download packages quickly through multiple proxies, you could do the following in a script:
generate a metalink for your packages using powerpill
split the metalink into separate metalinks with roughly the same download volume in each one
launch separate instances of aria2c for each metalink, each set to a different proxy
If you try this, don't forget to change the connection settings in the powerpill configuration file (or when you split the metalink) to avoid more than 4 connections per proxy.
