Trouble using networked printer

I am a new iMac user with quesiotns regarding netowrked printing. Any advice/explanations would be appreciated.
I am using an Epson RX580 printer which is physically connected to a Windows PC. I am able to print from the Mac over a wireless connection through a Belkin router and the PC. I was running into trouble with print quality when printing photos (faint pictures) as well as text (dot matrix quality) from the Mac. I checked on the Epson website which advocated NOT using the Gutenprint drivers. I downloaded the latest driver from Epson's website. However, I do not know how to find that driver to identify it as the one to use. In the Print dialog box, I chose the Epson SP RX580 driver, which looks like just one of the long list of provided Apple drivers, so I do not know if it is actually the updated driver or not. In any case, when trying to print using this driver, the whole process locks up when I click on Print for some reason, and then I have to do a Force Quit.
My questions:
1. How can I find out if the proper driver has been downloaded and installed?
2. I have read posts on this forum suggesting incompatibility issues with Epson printers and Macs. Is there any truth to this? I note that Epson's website seems to give instructions regarding avoidance of Gutenprint drivers on computers running OS X 10.5, so I assume the Epson printers are ok to use if the right driver is used.
3. I have not tried direct connecting the printer to the Mac, but wonder if my problem may be due to the network situation. Obviously, I am able to print with the Gutenprint driver, so it isn't an issue of the Mac finding the printer, but rather of print quality.
4. I have contacted Epson as well, but am not sure how much help they will be, so wanted to see if I could get any answers from this forum.
Thanks.

I have downloaded the Gutenprint drivers and installed them. I added the printer using "Print & Fax" and clicked on Windows to locate the printer. I can print to the printer now. However, the print quality is still lacking. I have tried to adjust the print settings, but can't get it right. I want to print text docs, but also photos from the Mac through the network outlined above.
In general, I recommend that you use a higher quality setting such as "High" rather than "Standard" for most Epson printers. For photos, I would suggest that you set "Color Precision" to "Best". Also be sure to set the "Image Type" to the proper setting for the job you are printing. There are options for Text, Text and Graphics, Photograph, etc. You may also find that setting the Composite Gamma to 0.8 will improve the output.
Also, my "borderless" photos (4x6) still come out with a very thin border...
Did you set the printer feature to print borderless? What about the setting to Expand to maximum print area rather than Shrink to fit the page?
Any other tips?
There are almost too many settings with the Gutenprint drivers. If you are often switching between text and photograph printing, you may want to create Presets for the different settings.

  • Set up macbook to use network printer

how do I set up my macbook to use a network printer if I have a wireless router that isn't an Apple product?

    Hi Katie,
Is Printer Sharing still setup on the XP PC?
Might try Bonjour for Windows to make it easier to see the Print Services offered by the PC...

  • Applications crash when attempting to use network printer

I just upgraded to Tiger. Now, all applications crash when I attempt to select my network printer (HP laserjet 4600) from the 'File' ->'Print' menu. If the network printer is selected as my default printer, the program closes before the print menu even comes up. However, I can print to this printer if it is my default printer and I use the print icon instead of 'File'->'Print'. I also have a USB printer (Lexmark) which I can print to no problem. I can print to all printers with no problems from Classic applications, and I had no problems printing from either Classic or OS X before upgrading to Tiger. Anyone have any ideas?

Did you run Disk Utility> Repair Permissions after installing the HP driver software? While Repair Permissions may no longer be a useful as it was as a generic troubleshooting step under OS X 10.2.x, it's still essential if you have any third-party software that requires an administrative password to install, especially HP or Adobe software, which are known to trample around placing files with mis-set permissions all over the place.

  • Use network printing

I have à Windows network running. I now have à new macbookpro and i want to use the network printer.
When i use my windows pc I can see that my macbookpro is part of the Windows network, but on my MacBook i cannot see the network, i also cannot Finder the network printer.
How can i use the printer,?

Well please list the Windows PC (version of Windows) you are Sharing the printer and how you are sharing (Windows 7 HomeGroup doesn't work outside Windows). Plus are you telling OS X 10.6.x where to find the shared printer?
Plus read this Windows 7 sharing printer thread and there is a lot of solutions in that thread.

  • Window 7 32 bit excel or word hangs when print using network printer

When trying to print from Word or Excel 2010 32bit, once I click print, there is a drop down menu to select
a printer. When I select the network printer (a HP Color Laserjet 5550), underneath the printer drop down it says "connecting to printer". Word or excel will hang and then show up as "not responding".
My pc is running on Windows 7 pro 32 bit, Word and Excel of Office 2010

    Hi,
I noticed that you replied the similar thread, have you tied to the customer's resolution(Update/Reinstall the 32 bit driver on the network Print Server and then re-install the network printer, and then ran malwarebytes and
    removed malware.)?
Then, we may try to plug the USB cable from your printer into an available USB port on your PC to test if possible.
If the issue still exists, I recommend we go to Event Viewer and collect the Event log. It'll help us to troubleshoot the issue, you could upload here.

  • Using networked printer as scanner

I have a printer attached to our Airport Extreme and I can print off my mac but was wondering if there was way of using the scanner feature within iPhoto?

You can't use any scanner "within iPhoto". It's just not what the app does.
You can use Image Capture with the Scanner (assuming you have the drivers for it, of course) and scan the pics to a folder on the desktop. Then import them to iPhoto.

  • Using Commercial Printer Profiles in LR4

this question might belong in the color management section, but since it deals with Lightroom I'll post it here.
I am having trouble using commercial printer profiles in LR4.  I import all images as RAW files from the camera, and save them as DNG files when done editing.  Generally, the printing services I use want to see JPG files, and I am unsure how and when to apply the printer profiles as I move from a DNG to a JPG, in preparation for sending the job to the printer.
I'm sure the good folks ad Adobe have thought this through, but I'm stuck.
    Thanks!

    Salem, OR.

I called back and spoke to a manager who let me know that the profiles are, in fact, RGB profiles.  So I believe that I should be able to print to JPEG rather than an attached printer, so long as I have the correct printer/paper combination selected in the print dialog.  Do I have this right?
    Thanks....

  • Trouble printing to a network printer

I am having trouble getting me mac to print to a network printer. I can go to add printer, it sees the network and the printer. The mac has the software as a choice, Canon MX320, and adds the printer just fine. But when I go to actually print something, even a test page, it just sits there and says "printing" in the status menu and never does anything. I have also loaded the Canon software on the mac itself, which did not seem to help. Does anyone have any advise?
My mac is connected to a windows computer via ethernet. The printer is hooked to the windows computer. Mac sees the computer and the printer and pretends that it is working, but printer never responds. I don't really print from my mac that much as I use it primarily for FCP, it just would be nice if it could. I have tried to print to a dell on the network and a lexmark, but just thought the problem was that those printers were older and the drivers wouldn't work with the mac. So when I got a brand new Canon and plugged it in, I thought it would be a cinch.

Because you have the printer connected via USB to Windows you cannot use the Canon driver on the Mac. For this type of connection you need to use an alternate driver like Gutenprint or PrintFab. Gutenprint is preferred because it is free and comes with OS X. However the MX series is not yet listed as a supported model, even with the latest version of Gutenprint. So if you wanted to stick with Gutenprint then you would need to find a compatible model to the MX320. Some previous posters have mentioned that the MP150 and MP160 Gutenprint drivers have worked with their Canon.
If you don't manage to get the Gutenprint driver printing correctly you could look at using [PrintFab|http://www.printfab.net] which does cost €49 but does have a 30 day trial so at least you could try it out. And it does list the MX320 as a supported printer.

  • Trying to use HPLJ 1102w as a wired network printer. How do you configure the network settings?

I have an HPLJ 1102W and I want to use it as a wired printer on my LAN. The trouble is, the easy setup utility is geared toward wireless networking and the ethernet interface will not get a DHCP address from the LAN. In order to get an IP address, I have to go through the wireless networking configuration settings. Can anyone point me in the right direction on how to use this printer as a wired network printer?
    thanks,

    Hi,
The HP LaserJet P1102w provide USB or wireless network interface only.
the product do not include any ethernet card, as you may also find by its spesification System Requirements below:

  • Wifi network printing using Canon Pixma MP600R

Hi, we've just bought the MP600R printer to use as a wifi network printer for three macs. An emac, an ibook and a macbook. All the computers are running different versions of the Mac OS from 10.3 through to Leopard (housekeeping!)
Anyway we've read all the troubles with Leopard so are prepared for the problems but the other probem we've encountered is that the first computer connected perfectly well (it has a 10 x 4 operating system) but since then none of the others will communicate with the printer.
Is this something to do with registering mac address with the printer? Has anyone set up more than one mac attached to the MP600R before? Any suggestions gratefully received. Life is too short to be this puzzled. best Livia

    Hello Livia,
I have an MP600R that is being connected to wirelessly via 10.4, 10.5 and XP.
The first step with the configuration is choosing the wireless network the MP600R will connect to. The second step is setting the ip address; either static - which means you enter the numbers, or dynamic -which means the wireless router sets the address. Both of these functions have to be done when the printer is connected to the computers USB port.
Once the printer is connected to the wireless network, then on the Mac's you use the More Printers > Canon IJ Network setting to find the printer and print to it. When you browse the printer will be displayed with its MAC address in brackets.
For those that are not able to connect to the printer, you may find that they are using different ip address to the Tiger Mac and MP600R. Check your network settings on all machines to ensure they are using the same address subnet (typically the first three sets of numbers in the address).
If the addresses are on the same subnet, then there may be something wrong with the driver software. When you go to add the printer, do you see the MP600R after selecting More Printers > Canon IJ Network?

  • Trouble setting up a network printer

    Hello,
I'm having trouble setting up the new printer. It's an HP ColorJet 2600n and it's connected to a Linksys WRT54GS wireless router. According to the limited instructions that came with the printer, I should be able to just plug it into the router and it will work. That's not the case. We have 5 computers that will be using the printer.
    1GHz Imac PowerPC G4
    Dual 2.3GHz PowerPC G5
    Dual 3.0 Xeon Mac Pro
    a 5 year old G4 laptop
    2.0GHz MacBook Pro
All of the computers are up to date with OSX and all other updates. the laptops and the Imac are on the network wireless. What do I have to do to get this printer working? Networking and whatnot is not my area of experise so I don't really know where to begin or what to look for.

the 2600n is a Bonjour-only printer. When you Add in Printer Setup, you just look for it to appear in the Default Browser window and select it.
Because HP installers usually screw up permissions, you should repair permissions (Disk Utility) and restart the Mac(s) before attempting to Add the printer.
I don't have a Linksys router - it is possible it blocks mDNS (Bonjour). Maybe there's a firmware update? I would check several sources before updating the Linksys firmware - they have been know to have negative effects on Macs.
Just checking - do you only have one router or a router plus wireless base station (like Airport Extreme)?

    Hey Falk,
    Thanks for the response.
I can print on a network printer after I changed 'Crystal Reports Job Server' to run under a user account that has privileges to access the printer.
To answer your questions regarding the problem:
    >Can you schedule the report successfully ?
    >>Yes I was able to schedule the report successfully
    >Can you print the report successfully?
    >>NO the scheduled task would fail with the error message as posted above.
