Trouble using the Voice Separation Tool in the Score Editor.

Hello,
I am trying to change the notes in a piano score from the treble clef to the bass clef and vice versa.
I've tried going under Score Editor>Layout>Staff Styles, choosing piano 1/3 and making sure the channels were set, but it doesn't seem to actually change anything. And when I try to use the Voice Separation Tool, I just get the message: "The Voice Separation tool only works for polyphonic staff styles with MIDI channel assignments."
I am new to Logic and am sure it's something very basic that I'm missing.

I'm not sure what your issue is: add extra notes, convert them to Independent Grace notes, and adjust the positions using the Layout tool as needed.

Is this a new Apple iD? If it is, and you have already set it up, then you have two options:
1. Temporarily put a Credit Card or Gift Card on the account to download the free app. If you put a credit card, then once you have downloaded the app, you should be able to go into your Account preferences and change the payment option to = None.
2. You can download the fee App, and then set up a new Apple ID.

Trouble using the Web-based utility

I have a WRT54G wireless router, V8, firmware 8.0.0. It is Ethernet-connected to a Windows Vista machine running SP1.
I am having trouble using the Web-based utility. I can access it but cannot make any changes. For instance, if I change the settings on the Setup page and click "save", I get a "This webpage is not available"
I tried updating the firmware and got the same message. Disabling my personal firewall has no effect. Resetting the router from the button on its rear panel has no effect. I tried using with both Windows IE and Google Chrome browsers and got the same result.
I have been using this router without problem for months using a a Windows XP machine. This problem may be associated with my changing it to the current Windows Vista machine. I no longer have the Windows XP machine.

I spent a full day unsuccessfully trying to make it work, including numerous Linksys utilities downloaded from the site. I could not conjure any support on Linksys chat, and the live body on the Linksys tech support line wanted to charge me $29 for his help.
I finally succeeded by purchasing and installing a Netgear wireless router ($44, Staples) that came up flawlessly the first time. The Linksys device is in my trash.

Feature Request: Voice Separation Tool during Scroll in Play

Have been using the voice separation tool to make coherent piano parts after being played in via midi. Ideally it would be great if Logic had some 'intelligent sensor' which automatically detected the "logic" of what left and right hand would do.
It gets really tedious dragging the Voice Separator tool through the piano score especially if it is a long part, so I had the idea to try and use View>Scroll in Play NOT in Page edit mode but with the score running in a straight band across the screen. I figured if you slow the tempo down a bit you might be able to hold the voice separation tool in one place on the screen and 'surf' or skateboard between the notes separating them just by slight adjustment of the mouse as the notes flow by.
Unfortunately this doesnt work because even though you are scrolling in play with the tool, as soon as you click the mouse to make it active, it 'undoes' the connection causes Logic's score to update with the sequencer.
Is there an outside chance of a way around this? ie some unknown linking of windows etc - I would really appreciate a few tips from anyone who has regularly made piano parts with the Voice Separation tool

I don't know if this would help, but for piano parts I've given up using the voice separation tool, cool though it is. Instead, I start with the stock Piano score style (L7 terminology) and adjust the split point to get a reasonable result. Then I select all the notes in the bass clef and hit them with the "+" key (my k/command assignment used to increment event channel +1). This is a very fast operation. Then I alter the existing Piano style by setting treble to ch. 1 and bass to ch. 2. At this point you won't see a change in the score, but now you know that bass notes are "hard-assigned" to the bass clef.
Go through the part again, selecting notes that should be in the bass staff and hit them with +1 to move them down to the the proper staff.
If the part requires more than 2 independent voices (or more than L/R hand), I add additional polyphonic voices to that Piano style as needed (each set to unique MIDI channels) and go through the part in one more pass, selecting notes and assigning them to the appropriate MIDI channel. Using the key commands for "event channel + 1" and "event channel -1", assigned to the "+" and "-" keys makes quick work of this kind of thing.

Voice Separation Tool in Score Editor

Hi- I'd very like to use this tool and have read the manual, and searched this forum for posts on the topic. However - everytime I try, I get a window saying:
*The Voice Separation tool only works for polyphonic staff styles with MIDI channel assignments.*
Since I've played around in the Staff Styles window, either choosing a piano style like 1-2+3, or choosing the piano and then inserting voices, I would have thought that this was a polyphonic staff style. In each case, in the assign column, I assigned Midi channels.
So what did I do wrong ?
As noted in another thread, when I click away the Staff Styles window, my assignments are not saved:- I couldn't find an OK or Save so I used the Cmd+S command.

A polyphonic staff is one where multiple MIDI channels are available on a single staff. So here, "polyphonic" means that you have two or more independent instrument parts, each assigned to its own MIDI channel, but intended to be written on the same staff.
The Piano 1+2/3 selection is just such a staff style. Channels 1 and 2 are available on the top staff, meaning that you can display two independent parts on that staff (on ch. 1 and 2, natch). The bottom staff will display notes on channel 3.
The concept of a polyphonic staff style that provides for the display (in this case, Piano 1+2/3) of three independent lines written on two staves. This differs from a staff style that has three actual staves assigned to ch. 1, 2, and 3 respectively. That would not be a polyphonic staff style; it's just one that has three staves, each capable of displaying a single part. Note that a "single part" does not mean a monophonic line. You could display chords or single lines on any given MIDI channel.
For example, you could use the Piano 1+2/3 to display the following:
*top staff*: top part (channel 1) = piccolo, secondary part (ch. 2) = flute
bottom staff: (channel 3) = cello, playing double-stops (chords)

Implicit in this example is the idea that the top part will display two independent monophonic lines, the bottom part displaying chords, but intended for one instrument. And per the defaults for that staff style, the piccolo part's stems are up, the flute's down.

How can I use the Formula Editor?

When I click on the "Insert" menu and try to insert a function, every option is grayed out. What additional software is needed to use the function editor in Pages?

I'm nbot sure of what you try to achieve.
The Insert Function menu item is designed to enter functions used in table's formulas.
So it's active only if the cursor is in a table's cell.
Maybe you are trying to draw an equation and this tyask requires the availability of the third product entitled MathType.

Using the UI editor for a class that extends an abstract class

Hi,
At the moment it's unfortunately impossible to use the UI editor to edit a class that extends a certain abstract class. There is a way to circumvent this problem, by using a proxy class. Does anyone know how to create a proxy class for this purpose and how to register it?
Hopefully a future JDeveloper release will solve this problem. Is this a planned feature?

Printing out in the score editor

When I try to print a chart in the score editor, I just don't get the same picture that is on my screen. I wrote a big band chart (15 single staves), and I'm having a ton of trouble trying to get the printout of the whole score so that on each page there's 15 staves. Also, how could I make it so that I can put a title and author text without the text at a large size, but not overlapping into the staves. ANy help would be greatly appreciated!

..Rohan - I am really glad you wrote the above because it reminded me of something crucial you said when I was round at your place ( but which I hadnt until now registered) ... you emphasized checking up on the Midi position of graphic elements in the score. And the difference between the Layout Tool and the Pointer is paramount: Click hold/drag with the Pointer and you can see in the Help Tag the Midi position altering. Click hold/drag with the Layout Tool and the Midi position remains the same but the graphic position alters.
I would be very curious to get your take and that of iS on the following from a workflow point of view:
- what your default mouse button settings are and what kind of mouse you use ( As a result of this discussion I just re-read the very first pages of the Logic 7 Manual which deal with use of the mouse. Is it worth getting a mouse with a scroll wheel? I am very attached to my Trackball Logitech which has no scroll wheel).
- do you keep an Event Float window open.. or do you just set the display preference to show a Help Tag when you click on a graphic object in the score?

How do you draw a tie of two notes in the score editor window

How do you draw a simple tie in the score editor window of Logic Pro 10 ; two quarter notes together, an eighth up-beat accross a bar line into the next measure etc? I can't find the answer in videos, help manual. Please give a step by step how to do it.
It's hard to believe that a program like Logic, that has more information than the New York Public Library, does not have a simple solution for tieing notes. Maybe Logic XI will have one, or "Logicians" can speak to Sibelius for a more "note-worthy" way to solving the problem so that the score editor can be more accessible for editing purposes for those that read and write manuscript. Ties are generally automatically created as necessary. Simply adjust the length of the note in the Score (using DurationBars or the Inspector), or in the Piano Roll or Event list.

Is it possible to change the length of a note in the score editor?

I thought I saw somewhere that it was now possible to adjust the length of a note in the score editor graphically, i.e. by clicking on the note and somehow adjust its length directly to change it from 1/4 note to 1/8 (for example).
I don't want to do this by going over to the "Length" dialog on the left because I hate having to switch from thinking in terms of music notation and then having to think (temporarily) in MIDI ticks per beat, etc.
I must admit that I'm finding it extremely frustrating to simply enter music into Logic in a score....I thought this was supposed to be one of its strengths but it seems to be providing amazing capabilities at the expense of ease of use for beginners.

greetings dh... are you into Key Commands? There are two which will help you do the above in a trice:
• Nudge Region/Event Length Right by SMPTE Frame
• Nudge Region/Event Length Left by SMPTE Frame
I set mine to the simple letter o and n
- I click on a note and press o repeatedly.. it grows and grows longer and longer
– I click on a note and press n repeatedly.. it shrinks and shrinks shorter and shorter
All by little increments
If you keep a Piano Roll window open while you do this, you can see the length do this exactly
man, it is VERY quick and handy for changing the length of notes
It really helps to have a view of the midi Piano Roll to cross check the exact length and position of the notes.
Check out the Key Commands:
• Set Next Higher division
• Set Next lower division
These change the note value in the transport bar near the time signature. Your time signature may be 4/4 but the "grid" on which the notes are appear in the Piano Roll could be displayed in quarter, 8th or 16th notes. If you experiment with these commands, then you can match the note lengths easily to the grid display visually (with the above nudge length commands)
Also - you may like to experiment with the following 3 KEY Key Commands:
1 • Nudge Region/Event Position Right by Nudge Value
2 • Nudge Region/Event Position Left by Nudge Value
This will move your selected notes forward in time or back in time according to the
value that is set in the Transport bar - say it is 16ths .. then each press of the key will move the notes a 16th
or if the value is 8th notes, then each press of the key forward or backwards will move the selected notes forward or back by this amount
... amazingly useful when you are taking a whole phrase and pasting it somewhere else, or if say you started to write a phrase in the Score Editor and you started on the wrong beat.. then you just Nudge back and forth
3 • Set Nudge Value to Division
.. this will in a trice change change the Nudge Value to whatever Note division value is set in the Transport bar
