Trouble using wifi exclusively.

Hello there,
I am totally new to the forums here, but I got my first blackberry ages ago, since then I have worked my way through an 8330, a curve, and eventually a bold 9900.  I loved them all, but I had a couple of issued, with the bold that had me stray over to a Galaxy S4.  Now with the Q20 on the horizon and the large availability of apps not available on its predicessor (namely skype), I really want to come back over.
The problem I was running into on my 9900 is that I work offshore and we don't have network coverage as soon as we get on the helicopters.  When I started doing this my 9900 seemed to operate just fine on wifi alone except that I had no text or voice.  But then about a year and a half ago it just stopped connected to anything requiring a blackberry enterprise services, namely yahoo messenge and BBM.  I am not sure if this is a problem with the phone or just the way that blackberry works now.  I would hate to buy a new Q20 and then find out I can't use it offshore because it operates the same.  So I am really hoping that someone can shed some light on this and that I just had a bit of bad luck with my 9900, not working the way it should.
Any insight you guys could offer would be greatly appreciates, keeping in mind that I am overseas as we speak and have no access to that handsett for about 2 weeks, but I am happy to take any advice under advisement.
Cheers!

BB10 does not require any kind of specific BlackBerry data plan so it will do everything on wifi with exception of phone and sms.

  • [SOLVED] Trouble using WiFi

I haven't had problems with this before, but then again, I don't use WiFi a whole lot.
ArchLinux simply cannot use WiFi, even if it's connected. I'm not sure why that is. I am connected using the GNOME interface and what I assume is NetwokManager, although I'm not sure. I have done a lot of Googling but I can't seem to find any solutions, mainly because I don't know what is causing the problem.
Any ideas on what to do? How to diagnose the problem? How to fix it?

I know I needed to give some information, but my question also was how to diagnose the problem. I had no idea what to do still. Also for some reason GNOME seems to have stopped detecting WiFi networks as well. Not sure why that is, I've not changed any settings.

im having trouble using bbciplayer on my ipad it says i need to switch to wifi but im already connected can any one help? I ve uninstalled/ reinstalled  switched it on and off what next?

Did you try downloading the movie from iTunes on your iPad?  I know it takes longer but I'd try that.
Also try to reset all settings.
Settings > General > Reset. Reset all settings.

  • TS1398 After upgrade to iOS 6 i am not able to use wifi.

Connected, but no wifi traffic (at home).
After upgrade to iOS 6 i am not able to use wifi. I am connected to my home wifi but no trafic is coming through (safari, skype, twitter, app store). I have even tried recovery of my iPhone 4S using iTunes as well as using iPhone. But without effect.
Can not connect at all (at work).
    Thank you for helpfull advice.
    Vladimir
Please do not give me advice like:
    switch proxy to auto
turn the flight mode on and off
turn the iphone on and off
    release the ip
    recovery the network settings
    recovery firmware
I have tried all these, but did not work.
    PS to apple:
I really did not expect this kind of trouble. If I would want to waste my time "repairing my device", I would buy an android phone!!!!!!

This helped me solve the problem:
I have changed the security from TKIP to AES and now my wifi works fine /sofar/.

  • How can you manage data usage when cellular data is off, but you are using WiFi where your WiFi provider charges for data use?

I spend quite a few months each year in Canada where I use a Telus Cellular Hub device which is also my WiFi Router.  My iPhone 5 has Cellular Data set to "Off" which insures I won't be charged via my Verizon Wireless Service Provider for charges while in Canada.  Trouble is Telus, Rogers and all the Canadian Internet Providers charge for all Data going through their Systems.  Again, My Cellular Data on the iPhone 5 is turned off, but I use WiFi for such things as checking the Weather, or FaceBook, or searching the Web.
I believe that things may be happening in the background from various Apps that use quite a lot of Data.  It could be that iCloud is part of the issue with things being backed up automatically.  It also could be that Apps like AP or other News Apps are sending large amounts of Data in the photos associated with their New Stories, etc.  I typically turn off the App Store "Updates" such that they don't automatically load.  The FaceBook works now posted videos play when you are just scrolling through the News Feed.
I have been trying to fine an article somewhere which focuses on this specific problem but unfortunately many if not most articles are about folks worried about using Cellular Data while in a WiFi environment when their Cellular Data is turned on.
Does anyone know of a fairly comprehensive article about what settings on which Apps might reduce the Data Usage when Cellular Data is turned "Off" but you are going through a Service Provider who charges for all Data Accessed even when you are using WiFi?

Thanks for your comments, it is clear you understand my plight.  The trouble is fully understanding what Apps and App Features are transferring data in the background any time you happen to turn WiFi to on (even if you have had it off most of the day or night).  Obviously things like Location Services can constantly be sending and receiving data from my iPhone without any action on my part.  Also if you have things like photo backup on the iCloud then each time you take a photo you are sending a copy out.  All App Updates if set to Automatic also can add up to quite a bit of Data.  Reading the News on AP or scrolling through FB News Feed is actually adding up to a lot of Data.  There could be other culprits that I am not even thinking of.  I don't want to turn Apps like Find My Phone off or turn iCloud off due to loosing the value of such a program entirely.  Again thanks for your quick response.

        csdwarf,
So sorry to hear about the trouble with Wi-Fi! Let's get that working the way it should. Could you provide us some more details regarding where this breakdown occurs? Are you having trouble with turning Wi-Fi on or connecting to your Wi-Fi? Are other devices connecting to your Wi-Fi without issue?

  • Trouble using AirPlay between iMac and AppleTV

I'm running OS X Lion 10.7.5 and I'm having trouble using AirPlay between iMac and AppleTV (2nd Gen).  It used to work fine, but for some reason it just stopped responding.  I can see my media on my iMac from AppleTV and I can see AppleTV from my iMac when attempting to use AirPlay.  However, when I try to pull or push media from my iMac to AppleTV it just stalls and never loads.  AirPlay works fine from my iPhone and iPad with AppleTV - it's limited to my iMac only.
I'm using a Netgear R7000 wireless router and a Netgear AC120 WiFi Extender and as such, I have 4 available wireless networks (2 from the router and 2 from the extender / 2 - 2.4 GHz and 2 - 5 GHz).  My internet access is great and my network performance is good across the board.  All of my software/firmware is up to date (iMac, AppleTV and router/extenders). I've tried all combinations (mixing/matching) all of my wireless networks between devices (iMac/AppleTV) - nothing makes a difference (again, AirPlay works fine between my mobile devises/AppleTV).  Netgear Genie has been making changes to my network settings as new firmware has been installed in both the router and extender.  I'm guessing there is something screwy going on with the network settings on the iMac, but I can't figure it out.
    Anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks!

I'm glad you got it all working. Out of interest, how do you (or your son) connect to the internet now? Is it just a dial-up connection? If it is, I am sure you know that, even if you get the Apple TV to share the connection, the speed will seriously limit the use of many of the Apple TV's features.
The Airport Extreme is a great router but you will need a DSL or cable modem as well as it won't connect to the internet without one. There are many great (and cheaper!) combined modem/routers available if your son wants to get a high-speed network up and running at lower cost. Any other computers, phones, games consoles etc that you may have in the house can then all connect easily.
I hope that I have helped a little and I will look out for future posts in case I can help again.

  • Trouble using facetime on another device with same apple id

    Hi
I am having trouble using facetime with my wife.  I have an iPad 2 and she has an IPhone 4S.  When we try to facetime, we are able to connect for a few seconds and then it drops off.  We are then unable to reconnect.  We both have the same apple Id and e-mail address although I am trying to contact her via her mobile number.  Any suggestions would be grateful received.

  • My airport extreme (generation 5) was set up using wifi and has worked flawlessly (on macbook pro 2 iphones and window 7 HP pc)until recently. I have reset to factory defaults over and over but still cannot get on the internet. Any suggestions?

My airport extreme (generation 5) was set up using wifi and has worked flawlessly (on macbook pro 2 iphones and window 7 HP pc)until recently. I have reset to factory defaults over and over but still cannot get on the internet. However I can then take my DSL cord and insert it in a different Ethernet port other than the WAN port and I can get internet on my Mac and iphones but only wifi on my husband's PC.  I hate to spend another $179 if this is just something I'm doing wrong. Please help

I'm having a bit of trouble confirming that the ZyXEL is a combination modem & wireless-N router. If it is, then you really won't get any advantages of using the 802.11g AirPort.
If the range of your ZyXEL is limited, you may find that doing either or both of the following will help: 1) Move the ZyXEL so that it is higher vs. lower in the room, that is away from any closed areas or placed in a metal cabinet, and 2) Changing radio channels. The latter is especially important in you live in an area where there are a number of competing Wi-Fi.
A good utility to find out, is iStumbler. You would use this to find these other Wi-Fi and find which have the strongest signal value. Those that do, you would also want to note which channel they are operating on, and then, change yours to one that is at least 3-5 channels away. So, for example, if you find strong ones on channels 1 & 6, change yours to 11.

  • More info needed about using wifi in high reflective enviroment

I am looking for documents about using wifi in highly reflective enviroments: rooms with aluminium floor, walls and ceiling en very little materials that absorb rf. (cleanroom enviroment)
    Any hints are appreciated.

    Thanks for your reply Mat,
The cleanroom enviroment (ASML semiconductor industry) is a large room about 30 * 60 meter and 7m high. In this room are smaller cabinets (about 20) where the actual work is done. Here you can see some pictures:
    http://www.brecon.nl/images/brecon_brochure.pdf
In full production there are about 120 engineers working with their 802.11b/g equipped laptops.
Every wall, floor, ceiling, door is made with aluminium sandwich panels. We have major troubles getting a reliable wifi enviroment, and also DECT and GSM telefony is hardly working at all.
Right now we have 10 AP's is the large room, and we are contemplating installing 1 AP in every cabinet with low power setting and using attenuators. We are also considering the use of leaky coaxial cable.
Migrating to 802.11N is not really an option since the clients are b/g equipped.
I will upload a plan soon.

  • Trouble with wifi after IOS 6 upgrade

I have an iPhone 4 and successfully installed iOS 6 today.  I am having trouble getting on my home wifi.  When asked to join my network, I click on it and type in my password.  Shortly after typing in my correct password an apple.com login page loads from the bottom of the iPhone but says "hmm, the page you're looking for cant be found".  The only option I have is to push cancel and then it ends my wifi connection with my own home network.  Help please.

        lovethoseleaves,
Oh no! I am saddened to hear that you are having troubles with your MMS pictures. I know that this can be an important thing to be able to do. I appreciate you working with us to get this matter resolved as well. I see that you have spent time working with us, and I know that can also be frustrating. There are a few things we can check though. Are these to any specific numbers or all? A factory reset certainly should've resolved this. We can check into the account set up as well for that if need be. Please share any additional details that you can think of. Thanks.

Hi - you might want to post this question on the Apple TV area - you would probably get a quicker response - if you have a specific question relating to Apple routers then post back here

You need a DATA service enabled by your carrier to be able to send e-mail via thier network.  Do you have a data plan with your carrier ?  If so - is it enabled ?
Can you access internet thru your network (not wifi) ?

How can I transfer an App purchased on iTunes on my pc to my iPhone 4s. I have tried synching but this does not make the app appear on my iPhone. I cant use wifi as my chip was fried on the latest update.

When you tried syncing, did you connect the phone, then click on the phone icon near the top left of iTunes, then click on Apps under Settings in the sidebar, then find the app in question and click the Install button beside it before clicking Sync at the bottom right?
