Trouble viewing compilations under 'artists view'

I'm using itunes 11 and having trouble viewing ALL of my compilations when I'm viewing itunes in the artists view.  It will show 14 of the 61 albums I have designated as being part of a compilation.  If I switch to the songs view and use the column browser and select compilations under artists, all 61 show up correctly.  I can't figure out what gives.  I've made sure that the compilation box is checked off, tried having no album artist listed, having the album artist listed correctly, and having it listed as various artists.  Nothing seems to make a difference.  Help!

Here's what I do. You may find it helpful.
In general I don't use the "compliation" check box unless the album is truly a compilation of multiple artists. For albums I enter the actual artist's name in the Artist field for each track. Then in Album Artist I put "Various Artists" (without the quotes). I do not enter anything into the Sort Artist or Sort Album Artist fields. In Artist view iTunes then shows these albums under Various Artists.
For albums that are no compiliations of artists, but might have guest artists on one or more tracks I enter the main artist in the Artist field followed by "(with other artist name here)" (without the qoutes). In Album Artist I will put the actual artist's name. I do not select the "compilation" check box in the album's Get Info > Options panel.
See if that helps you.

  • Why can't I select just one album under artist view and listen to it from beginning to end anymore? Why would you change that?

Why can't I go under artist view in music app, select 1 of multiple albums by a specific artist and play the whole album from beginning to end? Why would you have it automatically shuffle between songs from several albums by the same artist automatically? How do we change this back to previous function because this is sucking big time for a music lover.

I agree this is a really dumb change and I really hope Apple changes it back to the way it was.
In iOS 6 and earlier when you were in the Music player and selected ARTIST it would show a list sorted by artist. When you selected the artist you wanted, it would show a list of their albums.  Then you could select the album and see the list of songs.  In iOS 7 after you select Artist, it displays the album and every track, so you have to scroll down through not only the album but every track on that album.   That was a really stupid change on Apple's part.  Makes no sense.
Here is the list of albums under iOS 6.x...
and here is what is looks like under iOS 7.0
In iOS 7.0 you have to scroll down through all the songs to see the other albums.  That can be a really pain if you have a large music collection.
Please Apple change it back to the way it was!!  This didn't need to change!

  • Is there any possible way to set your itunes to just show the album name without the songs included in the album in artist view. and then be able to select the album to expand all the songs. this would be ideal as I have many albums under certain artists

I use to use windows media player. The layout was great. It would have icons (one of the album artwork inside the folder) for the artists. you could click on the artist and it would have the icons for all of the albums (similar to itunes) however it would not have all the songs included in that album listed underneath or within it. you had to click on the icon for the album to go into that particular album to view the songs. In my personal opinion this was much easier to search for a particular album especially if you had many albums under one artist as I do. I collect live concert recordings for several particular bands. It would be really nice if itunes would allow you to contract the songs names within each album under artist view and have some way to exand them or open a seperate album folder when clicking on the album name through artist view. is this even possible. does anyone know a way to allow this is happen. you would make a serious music collector very happy. I know this is a crazy request but for people who are serious music collectors like myself with over a TB of music it is much easier to consolidate each individual album under each individual artist for faster searching/viewing needs

You are describing an iTunes problem, not an iPod touch problem. Try posing in the iTunes forum.

  • Not all songs appearing in Artist view

I have an issue where under Artist view, which is what I normally use to browse songs on my iPod, not all of the songs that are stored on my iPod appear. So far, it appears that if I have an artist with songs under only one album (and tagged as such) and also a few miscellaneous songs that aren't tagged with album name information, then when I select that Artist under the artist view, it automatically opens the album and only shows those songs. When I hit menu to go back, it just goes back to the listing of all artists I have, instead of giving me an "All" option that will allow me to see the additional songs that I have. If I want to find those songs, I have to scroll through the list of 3500+ songs under the all songs listing, which obviously takes forever, even scrolling quickly.
I have verified the tags on all 3500+ songs, and have reset/reinstalled and deleted/reloaded all software and songs, multiple times.
Is this a bug? If not, how can I get these songs to show properly under the Artist view?

There are a couple of things you could check out that might explain what's happening. Usually two things contribute to songs not appearing under Artist on the iPod, both due to information either in or missing from the Get Info>Info tab against the song in iTunes. 1) the song has no album name associated with it or 2) the song is marked as part of a compilation.
If tracks are missing an Album name in the Info tab, this information needs to be filled in. The no album one is a bit quirky as the songs will appear under certain circumstances but the simplest remedy is just add None or Miscellaneous in place of a title. See this link for more detail: I don't see some of my songs when browsing by artist on my iPod
Also if the tracks are ticked in the Get Info>Info tab as part of a compilation, they will not appear under Artist on the iPod. Highlight a song in iTunes that you know is not appearing correctly on your iPod. Right click on it and choose Get Info and click the Info tab (alternatively choose Get Info from the File menu), if "Part of a Compilation" is marked untick it and afterwards update your iPod, you should find it now appears as normal. Compilations are stored in a separate folder in iTunes so the songs don't appear inside the normal Artist>Album.

  • IPad music app: album count incorrect/too large in artist view

    Hello,
My problem isn't critical, but it is really annoying. My third generation iPad is showing incorrect album counts for artists under artist view in the Apple music app.
For example, I have just one Coldplay album (Viva La Vida) uploaded to my iPad, but the music app reads the following under the album/artwork in artist view: "10 songs, 15 albums".
I have turned the iPad on and off. I have done a hard reset (by holding home and power button down until iPad shuts off and then tirns on again). I have restored the iPad from a back up through iTunes. I have restored it to factory settings through iTunes and set it up as a new iPad. I have erased the iPad using the iPad "settings/general/reset/erase all contents and settings" option. I have synced the iPad with iTunes and utilized the music tab to replace the music on the iPad. I have uploaded the albums through the iTunes store. I have synced them from my computer.
NONE of these options have worked. They all result in incorrect album counts.
This seems to be a problem which surfaced after I upgraded to iOS6, but I am not sure if that is what caused the issue.
Thanks in advance for any help.
    Cubulous

This is some sort of issue with iOS6. There are several threads (and theories) as to why this is happening. But the bottom line is, Apple needs to correct the problem.
One person indicated that the actual number of albums (by a particular artist) in his iTunes Library was the number of albums indicated on the iPad, regardless of the number of albums he chose to sync. In other words, if I have 10 albums by artist "ABC" in my iTunes Library, but chose to sync only 5 of them, the iPad would still indicate 10 albums by "ABC" (because it's looking to the iTunes Library for the album count instead of the number of actual albums that were synched to the iPad). While that theory makes sense, I found it to be somewhat untrue, at least in my case.
What I discovered is, if you rename or make a change to any of the metadata associated with a track from a particular album, then that album is duplicated when you sync, displaying the original album tracks (sans the one or two you changed) under the album name and a second version is created (using the exact same album name) but displaying only the track or tracks you modified. This in turn, increases your album count by one. So instead of showing the entry as just one album, the count now reads two for the same title. To make things even more confusing, if you go back and modify both versions of the album, successully combining the two back into one, so to speak (this can be done by renaming the artist to some other name, synching, then renaming it back to the correct artist), the album will then display correctly (just one "vesrion" showing on the iPad), but the album count remains unchanged (still indicating two). Basically, the count isn't reset, but remains incorrect.
Hopefully, I didn't confuse everyone. But it's difficult to explain. From everything I've read, it appears to be a combination of things; Album count and display, as well as creating additional album "instances" if any tracks are modified.
In any event, I hope they fix it soon. Because if you have a large music library like mine, it takes no time to really screw things up!

  • View play count in 'artists' view???

On the new iTunes 11, under 'Artists' viewing pane, it has the rating, play time etc , but is it possible to view the play count in there as well???? Thanks

They've "cleaned up" the display, but made it much harder to view complete albums with art and all other fields of interest. I quite like the new Artists and Albums views for playback and some tasks, but I really miss the Album List view of iTunes 10. The Songs view doesn't really cut it for me.

  • Turned "Sort by Album Artist" off on iPod Touch 5th Gen so individual artists on compilation albums will show up separately under "Artists" with no succuss.  This worked perfectly on my Ipod Touch 4th Gen.  Any Advice?

I have a 5th Gen iPod Touch.  It is running the latest iOS, and iTunes has the latest update.  I have many compilation albums that I imported from CD.  I want the individual artists and their associated song(s) to show up under "Artists."  I have turned off "Sort by Album Artist" in Settings.  This worked perfectly on my 4th Gen Touch.  Each artist from a compilation would show up under "Artists" with the correct song(s) showing, while still showing the whole compilation under "Albums."  Now, on my 5th Gen Touch, when I try to look at an artist from a compilation under "Artists,"  I get one of the following:  the correct artist and song, an incorrect artist and song, or an incorrect artist with the entire compilation album showing up.  Is this a bug in the new iOS 7, or am I doing something wrong?  Anyone else with this problem?  Any advice?

I have the same problem and I have been really trying hard to find a solution.  No success.
My main problem is this:  For example:  Top Gun soundtrack - I look at Kenny Loggins under artists and I see his albums and songs, plus the 2 songs from top gun.  Then when I look at Miami Sound Machine (also on top gun cd) under artist, I see correct albums from Miami sound machine, but under the top gun soundtrack, it shows the 2 kenny loggins songs instead.  then if I look at another artist from top gun cd, it continues to show the kenny loggins songs.  It doesn't matter which songs i look at, but the first one i start with will always show up on the others.  Funny thing is, if I click on the song, the correct song plays, it just says it is the kenny loggins song!!!  ha ha.   Been dealing with this for over a year now.  Pretty aggravating.   Happens whether I have compilations checked or unchecked on settings.   I have over 50 compilation albums and some are checked, some aren't...they all behave this way.
On Mac, itunes (v 12) it all shows up correctly and works fine.  I have become an expert on ID tags and am very thorough with my tagging.  HAND TAGGING, not some program that does it for you...they are never correct.  I match all my tag info with the info in the iTunes store for each album so it is sure to match.  Has taken a long, long, long time.
Love iTunes match, but this one issue is a real pain.  Anyone with any ideas, I'd love to hear them!  Thanks!

  • De-cluttering tip: Is there a way to prevent a track from showing up under "Artist" while still being able to view the artist info when I play the song by Album?

    I asked this question here:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/15312099#15312099
It was suggested I re-post in this forum, seeing as the problem may be specific to the Touch.
So, I have lots of "compilation" albums that include songs by various artists (for example, Pitchfork's top 500 singles of the decade). I usually select my music by "Artist," and now my ipod is super cluttered, because now I have hundreds and hundreds of artists listed, many of which I only have one or two songs by from this compilation.
One solution: simply delete the artist information for these large compilations, and then the songs from the compilations will no longer show up under "Artists." Problem is, I would like to know who the artists are when I play the compilation (I simply don't want to have the artists listed under "Artists")
Another solution: I could manually delete the artist info, but paste that info on to the song name. For example, a track that once looked like:
    Artist: Nirvana
    Title: Smells Like Teen Spirit
    Album: Best of the '90s
After my editing, would look like:
    Artist: [blank]
Title: Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit
    Album: Best of the '90s
This would solve my problem...but it would literally take hours to do for each and every individual song. Not practical.
Does any one have any other suggestions? It seems like there would be a way to just check a box for what info you want to be listed (ie, I could un-check "Artist," and then the song would no longer be listed by Artist, even though the Artist information would still be retained for reference). Does this option exist?
In the prior thread, someone suggested I mark it as a "compilation" in iTunes. But that did not prevent the individual artists from being listed under "Artists." Someone suggested that I may need to turn "Compilation" to "On" on my iPod. But that does not seem to be an option on the Touch.
    Suggestions?
    Thanks!!

Why not set the iPod to show Compilations?
In Settings select Main menu (or Music menu) and check Compilations. (You can do so for both if you desire.)
Now all of the Artists that only appear in compilation albums won't appear in Artists.
To get to the Artists that only appear in compilation albums open Compilations in your Main Menu or Music Menu (or either).

  • Artists not shown in the "Artists view" on iTunes 11

On iTunes 11, in the "Artists view", the artists list on the left is only based on the album artists.
The problem is that the artists themselves are not shown in this list if for example a track is tagged with different "Artist" and "Album artist".
    How to fix this ?

Go to the Songs view, enable the Column Browser from the menu if needed, then adjust the settings of :
View > Column Browser > Use Album Artists and
View > Column Browser > Group Compilations
to suit your needs. For some more thoughts on iTunes organization see Grouping tracks into albums.

  • Is it possible to view information such as play count on Artist view in itunes 11?

is it possible to view information such as play count on Artist view in itunes 11?

There is no column view for the artist tab in iTunes 11. The songs are chunked up by album, no option for list view, let alone column chooser. Also, everything under view > column browser is grayed out.

  • Thumbnail not showing for artist view on music app

Ever since iOS 7 (now on iOS 8.1.1), the thumbnails in the artist view of the music app on my iPhone 5 sometimes shows up but not for all artists.
I have tried restoring iPhone as new phone without restoring a backup (as I thought the backup may include the problem), restarted iTunes and iPhone, restarted MacBook on OS X Lion. Removed music, re-sync'd. Manually added album covers, re-sync'd.
Al album covers show, but artist view where a promo-type  picture of the artist is usually shown does not work for all artists.
Would have been more reliable if iOS could have simply used the latest album cover as the artist thumbnail.

It's a universal glitch with ios5. With any double album (i.e. Greatest Hits Vol.1 and Greatest Hits Vol. 2), the 2nd album is not coming up under "Artist". It's there under "Albums" and "Songs", but NOT "Artists".

  • Artist view in Music App is not displaying all the albums of an artist.  iOS 5 problem?

In my case, for example, I have 2 albums of Sade.
When viewed in Artist view, only one album shows up.  The other album is missing.
But when I go to Album view, I can find the Album.  And the artist name is correctly labeled as Sade.
Anyone knows why?  I don't remember this before upgrading to iOS 5.

  • ITunes 12: use 'Artist' name in "Artists view" rather than 'Album Artist'?

I.e. if I have an album with artist name X and album artist name Y it seems to sort by Y (the album artist name) in "Artists" view (i.e. the one with the pictures on the left)…is there a way to make it use the artist name (X) instead?
Say artist is "Johann Sebastian Bach", and album artist is "Sviatoslav Richter" (i.e. performer), I would rather it came in under "Johann Sebastian Bach" in the artists view, rather than "Sviatoslav Richter".
…the obvious solution is to switch X with Y, while laborious it does work, however, the problem is then when you have an album were a performer plays a bunch of different composers, this messes things up (breaks up the album in "Albums" and just makes a mess in general)…
In "Songs" view you can just switch between "Use Album Artists" and normal Artists…but in "Artists" view there appears to be no such setting and it seems Album Artist overrides Artist...

How do I get this feature working again? I am reluctant to move to iTunes 10.7 because I don't trust Apple at the moment.

    My suggestion:
    1) Always using MAC AIR with the power plug in.
2)Don' let the power level of battory fall under 30% percentage.
3)If the MAC can't be recharged now, just let it be with power plugged, WAIT...
