Trouble viewing photos in iPhoto

Hi,
I recently bought a new MacBook Pro, and although I'm using iLife '09, I have had a similar problem using an older version of iPhoto on my old MacBook Pro.
I have copied all my photos from my external hard drive to my new laptop. However, when I open iPhoto, although all my albums show up as expected, most of them are empty and don't display any of the photos, even though the photos are saved under the iPhoto directory. I have no problems viewing these photos on Finder. I keep trying to import them again, but still cannot see them on iPhoto. I am only able to view some of my most recent albums, and a few random older ones.
I am completely lost. Does anybody have any advice or suggestions?
Thanks!

1 - iPhoto is not a photo viewer but a photo management system
2 - you never make any changes to the iPhoto library including copying photo to it - it does not work and may corrupt the library
3 - you can not import photos to iPhoto from the iPhoto library - you import photos form your camera or form disk files that are not in the iPhoto library
Have you watched the iPhoto tutorials - http://www.apple.com/findouthow/photos/ - and practiced with a small library? iPhoto is a very powerful photo management system but it does has a learning curve

  • Trouble viewing photos within iPhoto '08

I have to say I am fairly new to a mac and the way it manages my photos. For some of my photos in iPhoto, when I go to open and expand them (for editing, for example) there is just a big exclmation mark, I guess this is some type of error. It is obviously having trouble looking to the correct folder on my hard drive to where the photos are stored. My question is, what is the difference between 'Data' and 'Originals' folders when I browse in iPhoto? I don't get it because my photos ARE in those folders, or both, but iPhoto is having trouble showing them in the application. I hope this makes somewhat sense and maybe someone here has had and dealt with a similar issue. This very well (and probably is) user error on my part since I'm still not fully familiar with this application. Thanks.

When you import a pic to iPhoto the app copies the file into the Library - this copy goes into the Originals Folder.
iPhoto also makes a thumbnail for display in the iPhoto Window - to speed up the process of working with the pics. This thumbnail is in the Data folder. The thumbnails are typically less than 50kb in size.
Standard Warning: Don't change anything in the iPhoto Library Folder via the Finder or any other application. iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.
The ! or ? turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
Have you altered, moved or renamed anything in the iPhoto Library Folder?
If you haven't, then try rebuilding the database. Hold down the apple and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
FYI: Should you want to access you files:
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
    *For Users of 10.5 Only*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
    *For users of 10.4 and 10.5* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • Viewing photos in iPhoto '11

I don't know if its merely a setting that needs adjusting but when I view photos in iPhoto a large proportion do not fill the entire screen as they did in iPhoto .09.
Can anybody help me fix this issue??

VERY frustrating not being able to view the photos filling the screen. It's a way to get us to buy another program. I don't understand why Apple takes away features that are valuable and necessary.
Why did Apple do this? I have to use Photoshop to see the photos in a large format - very inconvenient.
There is enough information to answer the question. Why can't we see our photos like we did in version 9???
There must be a competitor to iPhoto out there that will fulfill this need.

Having trouble transfer photos from iphoto to ipad mini.  Any suggestions?

What problems are you having ? You should be able to sync photos by connecting and selecting your iPad on the left-hand side of your computer's iTunes, and on the right-hand side there should be a series of tabs, one of which should be Photos - if you select that tab you can then select which photo folders (or iPhoto albums/events) to sync to the iPad. There is a bit more info on this page. You will need to sync all the photos that you want on the iPad together in one go as only the most recent photo sync remains on the iPad - synced photos can't be deleted directly on the iPad, instead they are deleted by not including them in the next photo sync.

  • Can't view photos in iphoto but I still can in Preview

Recently I changed some of the folder names of my photos in the iphoto library, but now when I want to view them in iphoto they are blank. I can still view them through Preview mode if I go through Finder, but that's a hassle. Also, the photos that I didn't change the folder name I can still view in iPhoto. I use iPhoto 5.
What should I do in order to get things back to normal and be able to view my photos in iphoto??

  • Unable to open and view photos in iphoto

I am unable to view my photos in iphoto, or from anywhere else on my computer.  iphoto looks normal but is running very slow.  My thumbnails are all there.  I will click on a thumbnail, but the border turns from yellow to light blue, but the photo does not open for viewing, editing, or slideshow.  I have a MacBookPro, MAC OS X 10.6.8. iphoto version 8.1.2
I have tried to open photos from my external hard drive without success.  Also, I can't attach a photo to an email.  When I attempt any of these things, this type of error message pops up:

  • Can't view photos in iphoto

I recently got an I phone 4s. So I updated to Lion on my macbook and the latest version of iphoto so I could use photostream. Initially iphoto worked fine. But now all of a sudden, when I open iphoto the events or individual photos simply show a black square with their titles but no photo. However, I can view my photos in finder when I try to upload a photo. Any thoughts as to how to fix this? Thanks

  • Trouble viewing photos

I am struggling saving and viewing photos on my Bold 9900. Having trouble since I bought the phone.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

No no...not "Camera", but "Camera Pictures"...
Homescreen > Media > Pictures > Camera Pictures
That should show a list or thumbnails (depending on your settings) of all images taken with your BB camera. There is no use of the  whatsoever in that sequence.
From what you describe, what you have now done is basically no different than launching the camera first...I am attempting to send you a different direction to find out if your pictures exist at all. As you know, there are multiple methods to access the locations where things are stored on the BB...I am attempting to get you to try those other methods, to check and be certain.
    There is also:
    Homescreen > Media >  > Explore
with which you would navigate through your whole Device Memory (since, as you say, you have no Media Card) to see if you can find where pictures are being stored.
There is also using Mass Storage Mode to explore your Device Memory via your computer.
Again, I'm trying to get you to use methods other than what you've already tried -- so that we can figure out where your pictures are being stored...but, using the same method over and over again would not, I would think, be expected to yield different results...hence using different means.

The only other option is to mirror your laptop, if its a 2011 or later model running Mountain Lion (10.8) you should see the icon in the top right

If you have older hardware or are running an older OS there are 3rd party options like airparrot

  • Want to view Photos from iPhoto on TV set

I purchased Composite AV Cable from the Apple Store and was told that this was all I needed to view pictures from iPhoto on my TV. It didn't work because the TV didn't recognize the iPhone , so I returned the cable. Later I spoke to a friend and was told that I also needed a docking station in addition to the AV cable to view pictures on the TV.
Before I drive back to the Apple store, does anyone know if this will work. I have an iPhone 3G and I want to view pictures on an older TV set.
    Thanks,

As long as you have composite input on your TV (and know how to set your TV to use that input, of course), you can view your photos from the iPhone. No need for a dock. But you must +carefully read+ the description of the cable's function, which states, +"Connect an iPod or iPhone to your television with the Apple Composite AV Cable, gather up your friends, and watch videos or slideshows together on the big screen."+
Slideshows, not photos. You must launch the Photos app, select an album (or the Library) then tap the Play button to start a slideshow. That's what is output to the TV, not just whatever picture (or other activity on the screen) is displayed - just slideshows and videos.

  • Trouble emailing photos from iPhoto

I'm hvaing trouble emailing photos from within iPhoto. I'm constantly getting this error message. I've checked the accounts and the usernames and passwords are all entered correctly. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

That's been a problem for a number of users lately.  Go into iPhoto's Accounts preference pane, delete your email account there and then add it back from scratch. Then try again.
If that fails reset your mail client to Mail in iPhoto's General preference pane and use Mail.  Mail has stationary photo templates similar to iPhotos but also saves a sent copy of any emails your send.

  • Viewing photos from iPhoto in Apple TV extremely slow?

Approx 9k photos in iPhoto split into events
ATV connected to iMac hosting iTunes via gigabit ethernet
iPhoto library hosted on iMac's internal SSD drive
..so you'd think it's be as quick as a quick thing.
It's crazy slow to generate the Event thumbnails and then takes forever to start viewing the photos when you choose one.
Any ideas?  Or is this 'normal'?
    Thanks!
    Adam

Ok, I think that what ur doing is on Itunes ur selecting _All photos and Albums._ Try the middle one _All events_ that will put all ur pictures in events like u have it on ur Mac.

  • Unable to view photos in iPhoto unless same day import

I imported and edited a bunch of photos in iPhoto yesterday, but when I went to use them today, all I see are blank thumbnails. When I click on these, there's no picture. I can only see the photos I imported today. Where did all my other photos go? And how can I save them so they don't disappear on me?

    Aneek:
By "no picture" what do you mean? What do you see? If' it's a gray window with an "!" in the middle it means that the library database file has been damaged and lost the link to the original file. That can happen if there's been an interruption while iPhoto is writing to the database file.
You can try rebuilding the library as follows: launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select the first four options. I'm not confident that that will resurrect the library but it's worth a try. If that doesn't work post back and we'll go from there. Also see the tip at then end of my signature.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
