Trouble w/ wireless connection with iMac G3

I just got an iMac G3 (grape). Its running OS 9.2. I read on these discussions that the best way to connect it to the internet is with the Linksys WET54 ethernet adaptor which I got today. I have a Belkin router with a cable modem on my PC. I have another PC with a USB adaptor. Those all work fine. My problem is after hooking up this linksys adaptor it won't allow me to access the internet on this Mac computer. Anyone have any ideas? I thought all I had to do was connect it all via ethernet, no drivers to install, blah blah blah. And no I never did configure a home network or anything since the USB adaptor just picks up the router signal and I really don't need file sharing. Doesn't this adaptor also just pick up the router's signal or do I need to do something else?

Ok...I already did all that before I ever even posted this question.
Sorry, I couldn't find a reference to that in any of your other posts.
I read another post about the mac changing the IP address on its own and their solution was to trash the TCP/IP file from the preference folder, reboot, then re-do the settings in the TCP/IP and then they got it to work. I don't understand how to do that. If I trash the file, first of all how do you trash it and secondly how do you get back into it once it has been trashed?
Find the TCP/IP preference file in the Preferences folder inside the "System Folder". You can trash this. The file will immediately be created with default values when you reboot or access the TCP/IP control panel.
I was confused by infastructure or ad hoc choice so i chose ad hoc.
That should be set to infrastructure.
When I open the TCP/IP again it keeps giving the IP address as 169.254.4.145 when I put it in as 192.168.2.2.
You should have the TCP/IP control panel set to DHCP. If it fails to communicate with the Belkin's DHCP server you will get an address that starts with 169.
mrtotes brings up a good point. If your Belkin has an access control list (MAC address filtering) enabled you will need to add the MAC address of the wireless interface of the WET11.

  • Zyxel pk500z router/wireless modem loses wireless connectivity with imac

My iMac loses wireless connectivity with wirelss internet from my Qwest  ZyXel PK5000Z modem/router intermittently. Have to constantly reboot the router to allow my Imac and other Mac notebooks nto reconnect to wireless internet connection.

Suggest that you take one or more of Mac laptops down to the coffee place and connect there to check  your performance. If you get a good connection there....as I suspect you will...you know the Macs are functioning correctly.
If the Macs perform well at the coffee place, you need to contact the ZyXel support folks for ideas on why the PK5000Z device is requiring constant restarts.
As you might imagine....on an Apple support forum, we are not going to be able to provide much help with a ZyXel product.

  • Unable to set wireless connection with imac and Canon MX860 printer ...

I recently converted to a Mac and bought a Mac Book, iMac, Airport Extreme, and a Canon MX860 printer. i have installed the canon software numerous times on my iMac to set up the wireless connection. yes, the airport extreme recognizes the printer and i am able to connect to my private and guest networks. the signal strength is good. It's the next part that I'm always stuck at. The Printer settings does not display when i choose More Printers and select Canon IJ Network. I called Apple support and we tried changing my network settings to an unsecured network and it still has the same issue. It was recommended this may be Canon driver issue and advised me to contact Canon. I reset the Airport, changed my network name and password .. i think i tried everything and it still does not work. What was I thinking when i said i wanted to convert to Mac? I can't move forward and connect my macbook or pc yet until I successfully connect the imac. Yes, i installed the latest canon IJ Network tool. of course the USB connection is fine but that defeats the whole purpose if why i bought this printer. please advise how to fix. this is getting very frustrating.

"I ran into the same network installation issue that I've seen in other Canon printers. Canon's network setup forces you to connect by USB cable first. Only after you tell the program that you want to use the computer over the network can you remove the USB cable, move the printer if needed, and if you're using a wired connection, reconnect a network cable. The process isn't particularly difficult, but it's more cumbersome than what other printers let you do, which is simply put the printer where you want it, plug in an Ethernet cable, and install the software." source = http://shop.pcmag.com/shop/product/pcmag/84634068.aspx?SB=6&OB=1
"MAC wireless network printer setup requires turning off firewall, and works fine if you leave firewall off (not recommended). If you set firewall at "essential connections only," wireless networked MX860 won't work. You must add MP navigator and solution apps to your firewall enabled list. Then it worked fine on the admin account, but still won't work on users account which required additional permission settings and selections. After 2 hours it worked fine, but I would've expected better instruction manual for MAC." source = http://cnet.nytimes.com/multifunction-devices/canon-pixma-mx860/4852-3181_7-3352 9769.html
"The only trouble that I have had with this machine is setting up the wireless network. The manual instructions are impossible for me to understand and I ended up having to call for assistance. Which easily solved the problem. And again when I had to reconfigure my network settings it was impossible to follow the logarithm of instructions in the manual. Again I needed to call for assistance. If I need help after the year manufacture's warranty I will be charged for these calls." source = http://www.zimbio.com/InkjetPrinter+Reviews/articles/1932/Canon+PIXMA+MX860+Wireless+One+PhotoPrinter
    Even Windows people have trouble:
"I NEED INTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO CONNECT MY HP LAPTOP TO THE CANON MX860 PRINTER."
"I'm with you. I have my mx860 connected usb to my pc with the printer being shared but my wireless laptop can't find it no matter what I try."
    And, unhappy Vista person:
"I had high hopes for this printer - it seemed to have it all. But the wireless feature never worked, it only worked on my gigabit network for about two weeks (only THREE print jobs including the test print), and never observed it to work via USB - Vista (x64 Ultimate) would throw an error saying it could not attach the device."

  • Wireless connectivity with iMac G4 flat panel

    Hey everybody,
We are thinking about buying an airport card for our imac G4 flat panel. We live in Ireland and are in the process of switching from a satellite dish-based Internet provider (connected via ethernet cable from the roof through the wall to the iMac) to our cable TV providers for a less expensive connection. The cable modem will be up in the TV room (the only cable CATV point that works), where we will attach a wireless router that will allow Internet access to the iMac downstairs and the iBook anywhere else in the house. Our cable providers offer 1, 2, 3 and 6 MB download speed packages. Here are the questions:
    1) Is the "Apple Part No. M7600LL/E" available on macwireless.com the right one for our flat panel iMac G4 from 2003?
    2) Is there any advantage to the airport card versus using a bridge? If so, which bridge is appropriate and easy to configure?
    3) Which wireless router is recommendable to link with the cable modem upstairs?
    4) Will the connection be strong enough between the router and the airport card or bridge to provide full speed and, possibly, VoIP (saving dough to one day be able to upgrade to a 20-inch iMac! LOL)? The distance is about 8 meters.
    5) If we later upgrade to a new iMac and give our son the flat panel will everything still plug and play?
    6) Which download speed package do we need to make everything run smoothly?
    7) Is it really feasible for a "layperson" to install the card themselves?
    Thanks again for your help!

Forgot to say in my other post. There's no need to buy at that price ($199) and pay for shipping - there are plenty of UK/IE options for buying.
There are also alternatives like Ethernet over Mains electricity (14 or 85Mbps) which may be a better option than original Airport.

My guess is that the security settings on your router and iPod do not match.
For a test, change your router so there is no security.  See if you can connect and get to the Internet. If that works, set up the router with security and use the same settings for the iPod.

  • Lost wireless connection with mx860

i lost my wireless connection with my mx860 - please help, i have tried it all
    thank you

Did you solve your printer connection problem?  I have the same issue.  When I first turn the system on, it is connected.  But after a short time (a few minutes?) it loses connection between Mac and printer, even tho both are connected to my WIFI.  I have to turn the printer and and off to reconnect it to the Mac.  Very frustrating.  I have checked Netgear, Printer and Mac settings and can't find any explanation.

MBPro with 10.8.1.  Lost my wireless connection with X6675 Lexmark printer.  How do I reestablish the connection.  My router is a Time Machine.

  • IMac loses wireless connectivity with Time Capsule

I'm having a problem with my iMac 24" 3.06ghz losing connectivity with my Time Capsule (1 TB), but my wife has a new Dell laptop running Windows Vista and using the TC for her wireless. She does not lose the connection and keeps trucking everytime I lose it. The TC seems to be transmitting fine, but it's not communicating with the iMac. Any ideas?

My wireless network works well, using TC as wireless router, but occasionally Safari will lose internet connection from iMac, while iTunes is syncing with ATV. Strange, I will work along with you to solve this.

  • My Epson wireless printer has lost its connection with imac - how do I reconnect?

My Epson wireless printer is not responding to the print command displaying the message "looking for printer/the printer is not connected" but the printer is on and the wireless connection working - any thoughts please on how to resolve? Thanks

I've found that once in a while this seems to randomly occur. It's happened to me in the last couple of days with my Brother printer. The only way I could get it working was to go through the palaver of setting up the wifi connection to the printer again, using the control panel on the printer to rejoin the network and re-inputting the password.
The connecting can be made easier if it and your router support WPS pairing. Select WPS pairing on the printer and if offers up an 8 digit number that you input in the wifi configuration page of your router.

  • Connection with iMac and Time Machine VERY slow

    People
For the past of couple of days the connection with my iMac and Time Capsule has gone askew. The iMac shows the wireless connection at 5GHz with a transmit rate over 200. However, internet is slow and backing up about 300mb is in its 24th hour and it's only reached 180mb.
I don't understand what may have happened. The two machines have been best mates for a long time and now something's gone wrong. The only thing I did a couple of days ago is install the Update for the Apple Magic Mouse.
On the other hand, my MacBook, which also have the Magic Mouse update, has not trouble with internet speed - wireless, once again - and the Time Machine backups are happening without a hitch.
I bit the bullet and turned off the Time Machine and rebooted it. Unfortunately, it's made no difference.
    Does anybody have any suggestions?

Both your 5 GHz band and the guest band have the same SSID unless you have assigned separate names to them. I think it's much easier to identify them if they have separate names of your choice.
If you have a separate name for the guest 2.4 GHz band, click on the Airport icon at the top of your screen and then click "Join other network". The 2.4 GHz band should appear as a choice and you can connect to it.
I'm using Leopard, not Snow Leopard so I don't know if things display the same way on our operating system. If you want your computer to connect to a given network:
    Click System Preferences, then Network.
Click the AirPort connection on the left and then click the Advanced button at the lower right. You can drag the network that you want your computer to connect to first to the top of the list.

  • Trouble doing wireless sync with IOS5?

My iPhone 4S says it is waiting for the iMac to become "available". The iPhone is set for wireless synch, the iMac is also on the same network, wifi is on for both, and I have restarted the iPhone. Next I tried it with my iPad 2 (updated to IOS5) and it says the same thing. There must be a setting on the iMac that I'm not doing correctly. Help anyone?

I have a very similar situation, and am curious if anyone has the same issue or knows the solution, or if I have an incorrect expectation of how this all is supposed to work.
I, too, have iOS5 on an iPhone 4, iTunes 10.5, 10.6.8 running on an iMac, the 'wireless sync' button selected in iTunes, and all are on the same network (an Apple Time Capsule), and I followed all the initial setup instructions, and the troubleshooting instructions from Apple.
When the computer is awake and iTunes is open, the iPhone and iTunes see each other fine, and the 'sync now' button is active (not grayed-out) on the iPhone.  However, the only way a wireless sync will occur is if I manually select the 'sync now' button on the iPhone, or the 'sync' button in iTunes.  By the way, the wireless sync occurs whether my iPhone is plugged into a charger or not.
I thought the wireless sync was supposed to initiate automatically any time the iPhone was connected to a power source.  Am I wrong about that?  If I'm not wrong, has anyone figured out hot to get the auto-wireless-sync working?

  • Delayed internet connection with iMac

I recently purchased an iMac Intel Core 2 Duo 17" with superdrive, and am having issues with internet browsing. I use a linksys WRT54GS v.4 wireless router with speedbooster to which two other computers are connected, one wirelessly and one directly with ethernet into the router.
The other two computers have no delay issues while browsing but my Mac has unbearably long delay times when bringing up webpages. I am connected wirelessly through airport, but have also tried connecting directly to the router with ethernet which doesn't solve the problem.
However, when connecting directly to the cable modem with the ethernet cable and bypassing the router, there is no problem at all and all webpages come up lickity split. So I know there is something going on with the router and my mac, but the apple support people have said that this particular linksys router is fully compatible with my iMac. I am completely out of ideas, is there anyone that can help please?
    Thanks, marshmelloman

I have the exact same problem, with all of my computers connected to this router (all Windows XP and Mozilla Firefox). I have to hit "refresh" two or three times before it will finally load a web page, even simple ones like www.google.com. It is extremely annoying, and I have not figured out how to fix this. I will post if I figure out a solution to this problem.
If I am downloading a large file and surf the web while downloading, it works fine.

  • Airport express connect with Imac via lan line or can not?

I using IMac with connect to internet with DSL modem router (having 4 lan ports).
Now I put Airport express connect with one of Lan ports from DSL router and still connect my IMac with DSL router via lan line and still connect to internet via lan line (switch off airport function in Imac).
The Airport express is using for provide wireless internet and printer to my other PC.
My Question is can I still set up as above and connect share file to my PC via airport express?
Forget to tell that I'm very newby to mac.

chounws, Welcome to the discussion area!
Yes you can do that. Configure the AirPort Express (AX) to operate in bridge mode (not sharing a single IP address).

  • Slow wireless connection on imac

    Hello,
I'm dealing with a wireless connectivity issue with my brand new imac 27". My imac can find my wireless network but the download speed is very slow (1 Mbps instead of 11 Mbps). I'm working with a Dlink DIR-615 router which is installed in my garage, but my Imac is on the second floor. Putting the imac in the living room showed that the internet speed was fine. But upstairs it was not. However, a Windows laptop that I've put next to my Imac, showed better internet performance (5 Mbps). I understand that maybe there is a problem with receiving a good wifi signal upstairs but then again, why is the internet speed on my pc faster when they are both on the same place ? Is there a good tool for a mac to see the wifi signal strength ?
    Thanks

Oh yes, you can torn Wifi/Airport off if you like.
Macs look for an Internet connection ftom the top of the Interface list.
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
    10.7 & 10.8…
System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
    10.4 instructions...
Is that Interface dragged to the top of Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations.
    If using Wifi/Airport...
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.
For 10.5/10.6/10.7/10.8, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...
