Trouble w/ wrt54gs

I've been having trouble connecting my wrt54gs router.  Here's the lowdown:
-The cable modem is connected to the computer itself through a USB port rather than an ethernet connection.
- After talking to tech support, I ran the ethernet cable from the modem to the router, and ran another ethernet cable from the router to the computer.
- After connecting the ethernet from the router to the computer, the internet connection dies.
Any help?
Thanks

Hi ,
The tech as done the physical connection perfect.
Follow the steps to make your router work.
Launch an Internet browser.
b) On the Address bar, type 192.168.1.1, then hit Enter.
c) A login screen will appear.
d) Type "admin" for the password and leave the username blank or empty then hit Enter.
Go to "Mac address Clone" a subtab of setup tab, click on clone your PC's Mac, then save the Settings.
After that remove the power from the router and the cable modem, and then after 10 sec replug the power 1st into the modem and then into the Linksys router.

  • Trouble converting WRT54G v6 to access point

I want to use my WRT54G (version 6) as a simple access point - I have another router that connects to the internet and which has a DHCP server.  I read several other threads that said this could be done by 1) changing the WRT54G IP address to, say, 192.168.1.2; 2) disabling the DHCP server; and 3) connecting the WRT54G to my network using one of the LAN ports, not the Internet / WAN port.
I did the above and it's not working.
Home LAN: DSL modem connects to BEFSR81 router in a wiring cabinet in the garage; CAT5e runs from the BEFSR81 to several jacks around the house where I have a desktop PC and a laptop, both running Windows XP.
    What I did:
    1. Take WRT54G fresh out of the box and plug in power.  I.e., factory defaults.
    2. Connect my laptop to the WRT54G with a patch cord, connecting to a LAN port.
    3. Use http://192.168.1.1 to configure the WRT54G:  change IP address to 192.168.1.2; disable DHCP server; disable uPnP.
    4. Disconnect laptop from WRT54G, connect WRT54G to my wired LAN, using a LAN port (not the Internet port).
    5. Using the desktop computer on the LAN observe that http://192.168.1.2 (the WRT54G) is reachable and still has the above configuration, and observe that the desktop can still reach the internet.
    6. Connect the laptop to a second LAN port on the WRT54G, observe that it gets an IP address from the BEFSR81, observe that the laptop can ping 192.168.1.1 (the BEFSR81) and 192.168.1.2 (the WRT54G), and can reach the internet.  Looking good so far!!
    7. Unplug the laptop from the WRT54G and try to connect wirelessly to the WRT54G (using the default SSID of "linksys", no security).  Using the wireless software on the laptop observe the "linksys" SSID appears, so try to connect to it.  Status shows "associated", then sits for a minute or so and gives up, assigning Windows XP's standard bogus client IP address 169.254.85.4, indicating did not get an IP address from DHCP, and wireless connection is no-go.  Repeat several times, and also try "ipconfig /renew", all to no avail.  Laptop can connect wirelessly to another access point using a different SSID, so laptop wireless stuff is known good.
    8. Very sad...  Any advice?

Thanks Cekimball.  I might have a similar problem and would like to ask the same questions.

  • Game Hosting trouble w/ WRT54GS

I have the WRT54GS router and I can't host games on Warcraft. I can join them, though. My IP address never changes on this computer and I've opened ports 6112-6119 to forward to this computer. It still won't let me host games. Can anyone help?

If I rememer correctly when I use to play those games it had something to do with DMZ....maybe someone else can expand on this.

  • PLEASE HELP i have trouble with WRT54G port forwarding with linksys

Hello guys, i play a game called populous, and since im on a router i cannot host the game, when i used to have a d-link all i would do is have to set up the port to my ip with the udp. but ever since i have swiched to linksys that doesnt work, the ip on my portforwaring is the same as the one on my computer the port is correct and the udp is set, i also have no fire walls on and it still doesnt make a differance, Someone in the game suggested that there is a local ip i need to get? is that true or is there another setting i need to set up in my router page?

Yes that happens if you write replies to your own posts. Many regulars here only answer their "own" topics (i.e. to which they have answered before) and new ones which don't have replies, yet. If you write a reply to your own topic chances are your are not read unless during some random browsing...
Regarding your problem it is impossible to say anything unless you give the exact settings you have on your router. Please post the full settings you have for port forwardings, port triggering and DMZ. If you have UPnP forwarding in your router (I don't think you have) post those settings, too.
Otherwise I suggest this checklist for troubleshooting port forwardings.

  • Trouble with WRT54G

After a good bit of difficulty, it seems I've finally gotten my new router up and running. However, I can only get an internet connection with one computer; the other two computers can't connect. One is wired directly to the router--it's able to detect that it's connected, but can't get an internet connection. The other uses a wireless connection, and can detect the wireless signal from the router, but again, it can't connect. I've already read the FAQ, nothing on it seems to help. Suggestions?

Ok, it seems I was mistaken--the computer with the wired connection can in fact connect to the router. The router only seems to have problems with wireless connections. My laptop connects to the internet just find with an ethernet cable, but can't connect to the router wirelessly. I tried restoring factory defaults and then configuring the router again, but that didn't help. Is the router defective?

From the computer thats connected to the router, Open Internet Explorer, in the address bar, type : 192.168.1.1 and hit enter. Dont type anything in the username, in the password type admin. In the setup page, click Wireless and check the settings there.

  • Major trouble with WRT54G. Help please?

I was trying to open my NAT for better connection with my friends over Xbox Live, so I went to the Live Chat for help with this and I got it open. Maybe a month later it says my NAT is at "Moderate" settings again so I asked what could be the problem and the person I was in chat with suggested I upgrade the routers firmware and then try to open the NAT so I upgraded and then did everything that I was told to do to open it again and now I cant even get on the internet with it. Every page or URL I type in redirects me to my ISP's "hotspot" page. Can anyone help me???

In that case your modem has to be Updated/re-configured.

  • WRT54G ver.7 Cannot Connect ...

I am having trouble using WRT54G on my server. Still i have no internet when i connect my PROLINK ADSL2+ Modem/Router to my LINKSYS WRT54G router. The process is this 1. I run the CD first, 2. I connect the modem cable to the internet port of Linksys router, 3. I connect the LAN cable on the 1st port of the router (from 1,2,3,4) and connect it to my LAN on my server. 4. And continue the instructions from the CD. Still it says that no internet detected at all. I tried to reset my Linksys router several times but still cannot connect. I tried to use Easylink from Linksys.com but still cannot detect any internet connection. I tried to reset my dsl modem as well and no internet connection detected again. I tried to configure some items on my linksys router but i am not successful doing it again. My Linksys router is set in DHCP Automatic configuration then my routers IP is 192.168.1.1 and the other is in default settings. I dont need to use some username and password to connect on my internet because it is plug and play only. If i only use my modem connected directly to my server, there is internet connection but when i use my router there is no connection at all. Is there any configuration can you suggest to make my router functional when i use it?

Well tell me who provides you with the internet service if its a Cable or DSL connection accordingly i will give you the information....all you need to do is check if you are able to go online with the modem if yes then you need to connect modem to the interner port of the linksys router & then from any one of the four ports on the linksys router you need to connect a cable to the pc & you will be able to go online without any issue.

  • Regarding a WRT54G: Firmware and trouble with Vista

    Hey all,
First of all, this is my first post here on this board so please don't have me assassinated if I skipped some board rules/policy. I'm trying to find a solution to my problem a.s.a.p.
My first question is: what's up with the firmware versions and my router's modelname? When I bought the router I got it in a box saying WRT54G (v1.1) with firmware version 4.30.7. As a first step getting the problem described below solved, I downloaded the latest Linksys  firmware for a WRT54G v1.1 from this website. After the firmware update my router now seems to be known as a WRT54GL and next to that my firmware version number didn't increase, it deacreased to 4.21.1. I don't know about you guys but this doesn't seem logical to me. Any explanations? Also the firmware's date seems to be somewhere back in 2006, isn't this a bit outdated for 'latest' software?
Now onto the next subject: the fact that my Acer notebook keeps losing the wireless signal since Vista. The wireless connection between the router and my notebook has always worked very fast and flawlessly when I ran XP SP2. However, as soon as I install Vista, something odd happens. With the same drivers for my wireless chipset (they're for both XP and Vista) either my notebook keeps losing the wireless signal or the router has trouble providing my Vista notebook with a steady signal. For 30 to 45 minutes I seem to have a steady signal with 5 blocks filled on Windows' signal'O'meter and then suddenly I get disconnected from my router for like 10 seconds to 1 minute. At first it says my connection turned from "local and internet" to "local only" and after a few seconds the entire signal is dead and the wireless tray icon gets covered by that little yellow triangle. Without interfering it'll take up to a minute at most and the connection will be back as it was before. However, this minute is just enough to mess up skype sessions, downloads, streams, you name it. To be honest, I haven't got the faintest idea what might cause this. Does anyone of you have?
    N.b.
    - I think I've noticed the issue occuring more frequent during high bandwidth usage like downloading with 2.5 to 3 MB/s but I'm not very sure about that.
    - My notebook hasn't moved an inch over the past years and there are no other devices added in my house that might interfere with the signal.
    - I've tried all the eleven channels.
    - I've set up a dualboot system on my notebook with XP SP2 and guess what, problem is gone when I use XP SP2 again.
    - I'm using an Atheros AR500G wireless adapter.
    - I'm only using Acer's drivers for the wireless adapter, not their useless resources consuming utility that "manages my wireless settings". Which seem to be Acer's words for slowing sh1t down a lot!
    - I'm using exactly the same internet security software with Vista as with XP SP2. Turning this software off won't help in any way.
    Any help is much appreciated!
    Thanks in advance,
    G.

First thing which you can check is the Model number of your Router. Flip the router upside down and below you will find the Model number of your Router and version number. Make sure it is WRT54G or WRT54GL. As you have mentioned that previously the firmware on your Router was 4.30.7, Basically that's the Firmware version of WRT54GL Router.
Since you have already upgraded the firmware on your Router, Have you resetted your Router and re-configured all the settings back on your Router? If not then you can do it now.
While Configuring the settings on your Router you need to change the Wireless Channel to 11.
Now you can try to connect to your Wireless Network and check if you are able to go Online.
The model on the router itself says WRT54G.
I've already resetted and reconfigured the router several times, doesn't help. Also tried all the 11 channels.
And yes, I am able to go online but the problem described in my first post still exists. I don't see why switching channels would solve it anyway since it's clearly a problem caused by the router in combination with Vista, it's not signal strength related. But like I said, I tried all the channels anyway.
Is it possible for a Linksys employee to take a look at this topic? Are there some known issues with a WRT54G and Vista and/or an Atheros AR5005G chipset? Is my hardware and software supported by the WRT54G at all?

  • Trouble accessing the internet on a WRT54G wireless router

I’ve run into a problem setting up a wireless network at my friends’ house. The problem is accessing the internet from the wireless PC that has a WMP11 Wireless PCI Card to a WRT54G wireless router.
The wireless PC is running Windows XP and it sees and connects to the router with “excellent” signal strength but will not connect to the internet.
The router is currently set to WEP 128 bit encryption security. I’ve tried disabling the wireless security all together but when I do that the wireless PC no longer sees the router.
I have no trouble connection to the internet thru the wireless network I have set up at my house when I bring his computer there. But my router is an older Linksys 802.11b so maybe that’s why.
Anyone have any ideas what I should try other than telling him to buy a new wireless G adapter card?

If earlier your Wireless Adapter is working fine with the same network & computer .... try upgrading the drivers of the aqdapter .... from http://linksys.com/download  .... uninstall the older drivers & reinstall newer drivers ....

Having the same problem. And the answer is, YES! I just can't log on w/ my wireless laptop although the signal is clearly there, and I can log on to the wireless network, I just can't access the Internet.

Connect your modem to the internet on the linksys router...Connect a computer to ethernet port1 on the router...
    Hard reset your linksys router...
Press and hold the reset button for 45 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 45 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Check the lights(ethernet port1, power, wireless and internet lights should be lit)...
If you see the above mentioned lights, then, you can re-configure your router...

  • Trouble with my WRT54GS

    Hi!
I just bought a Linksys WRT54GS. I'm having trouble with limited speed when I connect to the router, wireless. It's limited to about 2,5-3,5mbit. When I connect the computer to the router with a cable I get full speed. I've got 5mbit, so it really shouldn't be a problem. Any idea what could cause this problem?
My english is a bit rusty, but I hope you understand.
    Thanks!

Change the channel on the router. This may be a possible case of interference then try disabling all the active firewalls on the computer.
