Trouble with airport extreme computer-to-computer network

i'm sure this is something pretty obvious, but i recently bought an airport extreme card for my iMac G4 1GHz so as to create a computer-to-computer network with my MacBook Pro.
I set everything up as per http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=166640 on my iMac, but when trying to join from my macbook i get "error joining network". Signal level on iMac is fine and the two computers are sitting next to each other.
has anyone any ideas, this is starting to do my head in!!!!
cheers,
stu

Can you "see" the new Wireless Network you just created on your iMac from your MacBook Pro?
Did you specify a channel in the range 1-11 that is NOT already in use by a neighboring wireless network? If you have no idea about that, pick a number from 1-11.
For starters, I would NOT use encryption. Get it to work without encryption, then add a 128-bit WEP password.
Try opening Internet Connect on your MacBook Pro to initiate joining your network.

  • Trouble with airport extreme and express

Hey all. I recently bought a new airport extreme and I'm now having problems setting up a network with the airport express. the airport express that we have is connected to a very old G3 iMac because it doesn't have an airport card and is upstairs. I have so far managed to set up the airport extreme so my G4 iBook and my MacBook Pro are both connected via wireless. The trouble seems to be that I can't get the next step set up as i'm not very experienced with networks and I can't get the express to establish a connection with the extreme. i hope somebody could help me sort out the next step. On a side note, this new airport extreme doesn't allow my xbox 360 to connect to it and i wondered if there is any way I can get it to connect again via wireless, either by changing a setting or the security?
Any help and feedback would be greatly appreciated,
    Thanks.

To continue to use the AirPort Express (AX) to give Internet access to the iMac G3, you will need to configure the 2 devices to use WDS to wirelessly connect. The instructions start on Page 41 in "Designing AirPort Extreme 802.11n Networks" (http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/DesigningAirPortExtreme802.11nNetworks.pdf).

  • Trouble with Airport Extreme and Time Capsule

Just got a new 2TB time capsule and added it to my network (existing Airport Express and Airport Extreme).  All devices are hard-wire back-hauled to Linksys router.  Set up was straight forward with no issues and initiated a time capsule back up without a problem.  Within hours I noticed that the TC was no longer reachable in Finder.. Opening the AirPort utility, I saw that both the Extreme and the TC were "lost".  Still had (green) internet connectivity, but the base stations were showing as off-line in the Airport utility.
Tried rebooting and checking from multiple other devices and no luck.  Occasionally will find them both on-line in Airport utility, but seem to lose one (usually TC) after a short period.  All are running the most up to date version of firmware (7.7.3).  Prior to installing the TC, I had experienced 0 issues with Airport Express and Extreme.
Has anyone else seen similar issues?  Are there settings that need to be accounted for in some way to avoid these frustrating "lost devices"?
    thanks

Thank you for your quick answer, smorkerz. However, I did it and it doesn't work.
I tried to check separately the time capsule and the airport extreme, switching one off when using the other one. The result is that each one works alone but when I use them both, just time capsule appears, works well, and I can't use the airport to print for instance.
    Do you understand anything ?

  • Trouble with Airport Extreme Installation

I also posted this on the Emac forum but decided it'd be best to spread the question around.
I just bought an Airport Extreme card 802.11g. I'm following the instructions, but when I turn it on it doesn't connect to a network nor does it even show up in the System Profiler. One thing I noticed is that it doesn't have the plastic pull tab its supposed to have. Does this tab serve a technical purpose or is it just there to make it easier to remove the card?
Thanks in advance and don't be shy to ask for clarifications.
Additionally, I've pulled it out and put it back in several times to no avail. It never has showed up on the System Profiler.
    Thanks again

One or more of the following is true:
    (1) The card is the incorrect card. Your card should look like this:
    (2) The card is installed incorrectly.
    (3) The card is defective.
    (4) The eMac's motherboard is defective and unable to recognize the card.

Resetting Airport Extreme disabled my home network. Now when i attempt to get to internet with iPad, or iPhone, I see an Earthlink (ISP) window with message: The internet connection is currently in use by another computer (nun.nn.n.nn) Enter your DSL Account logon psassword to switch the internet connection to this computer. If I do that, other messages follow. I am usually able to switch connection, but can have only one device on internet at a time. Tried to correct problem using Airport Utility, but failed.

Unfortunately, there is mass confusion about whether a device might be a modem or a modem/router since the terms are mixed up all the time. Even though a device might have only one Ethernet port, it can still be a router.
    If this is your "modem".......
    http://reviews.cnet.com/routers/netopia-cayman-3341-router/4507-3319_7-30484785. html
It is not a modem.....it is a modem/router. If that is the case, then the AirPort Extreme is not the only router on your network....it is one of two routers, and it should be configured to operate in Bridge Mode.
Does this device appear to be your "modem"?

  • How do i set up time capsule to work with airport extreme base to extend wireless network?

i have a airport extreme base, how do i set up a time machine to extend the wireless network i have with airport extreme? i have also 3 airport express's connected to the same network to extend my wifi all over my house. thanks in advance.

    Much better graphics, thanks.
You can leave the Time Capsule connected by Ethernet from the Linksys and configure for a "roaming" network as mentioned previously.
To do this, open AirPort Utility - Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the icons
Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = Same name as the AirPort Extreme
No check mark needed next to Allow this network to be extended
Radio Mode = Same setting as the AirPort Extreme
    Channel = Automatic
Wireless Security = Same setting as the AirPort Extreme
Wireless Password = Same password as the AirPort Extreme
    Confirm Password
Click the Internet icon, then the Internet Connection tab
    Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Update to save settings and allow the Time Capsue to restart
Then power down the entire network
    Wait a minute or two
Start the modem first and let it run a full minute
Start the AirPort Extreme the same way
    Power up the switch
Power up the Time Capsule for a minute
Keep starting devices one at a time about a minute apart
Now, your computer will automatically pick up a wireless signal from either the AirPort Extreme or Time Capsule, whichever device is closer and providing the stronger signal.

  • Dual N and G Networks with Airport Extreme?

    Hey gang-
Was at the office store looking at some current wireless N routers, in particular Linksys. They claim to be able to run wireless G 2.4 gig and wireless N 5 gig networks separately and at the same time. One suggestion was to run home computers on the G network and media servers on the N network.
So, my question is, can the new Airport Extreme run simultaneous dual networks like that as well?
My plan would be to connect an Airport Express running in 5 ghz N bridge mode to my Tivo and keep the G network for the other computers in the house. Does this sound right?
    Thanks!
    Dave

If I understand you correctly, I can set up my Time Capsule to run as an "N" only connection and extend the network to my Airport Extreme and run that as a "G" connection?
As long as you realize that you will not be "extending" the TC wirelessly with the AirPort Extreme. Instead, you will need to connect the two by Ethernet. To extend it wirelessly, would require setting up a Wireless Distribution System (WDS) between the routers ... which will definitely reduce the available bandwidth and compromise performance.

  • Extend existing network with Airport extreme and 3 airport express.

I want to extend an existing network (thomson TG787v) with an airport extreme (MD031Z/A) with 3 or 4 airport express(MC14Z/A)
The thomson is the router from the provider and must be used. The building is an old mansion with a lot of brick walls
I tried to connect the extreme with an ethernet cable (in bridge mode) and then connect the airport express in a line to have wifi in all rooms of the mansion.
But somehow the airport extremes cannot extend the network.
Can anyone tell me how to setup the apple devices to make this work?
    Thanks
    Bernhard

I tried to connect the extreme with an ethernet cable (in bridge mode)
    This is the correct.
and then connect the airport express in a line to have wifi in all rooms of the mansion.
Apple's "extend a wireless network" feature will only allow you to "extend" the signal one time. So, the first Express would connect to the AirPort Extreme wirelessly and extend the signal.
But, you cannot "extend" the signal a second or third time. Each AirPort Express must be located so that it connects directly to the AirPort Extreme.  In other words, each AirPort Express must be located about the same distance from the AirPort Extreme.
Another way of thinking about his is to visualize the hub and spokes of a wheel. The AirPort Extreme would be located at the "hub".  Each AirPort Express would be located at then end of a "spoke".  As such, each AirPort Express communicates directly to the AirPort Extreme.....not to another AirPort Express at the end of another hub.
You may need to consider installing Ethernet cable to each location where you will need an AirPort Express and configure the network that way.  Performance wise, this is a much better way to "extend" the network.

  • Expanding a network with Airport Extreme

I’m trying to extend (or bridge?) my network using my Airport Extreme. My roommate has the modem hooked up to his router and I think it’s a Linksys router. I have an airport card installed in my G4 desktop and I get a decent signal. The reason I want to hook up the Airport extreme is so I can share hard drives and printer with my Macbook Pro I just purchased. I get a fine signal with the Macbook Pro from my roommate’s router as well. The problem is trying to set up the Airport Extreme so I can access the hard drives and printer. I haven’t seen much on using Airport Extreme to expand a network. I was also thinking about running an Ethernet to the desktop from the Airport since it would be faster than the old Airport card I have installed which I believe is only “B”. I would then like to use Back to Mac to access the desktop from anywhere but that is a later issue until I get the airport extreme setup. Any suggestions on how I can extend the network so I can do this. Thanks.
    James

The only way to do this is by using WDS. Most Linksys devices are not compatible with Apple's WDS but some are. The Linksys WRT54G or WRT54GS (not latest versions v5) are known to be.
You would need to configure the Linksys and the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) to link together using WDS.
One side effect of WDS is that the wireless bandwidth will be cut in half.

  • Airport Extreme Problem. Guest network works, but nothing else!!!

An hour or so ago, my network stopped working. My guest one works, but not my main 2.4 or 5 ghz network. I tried the Airport utility but it can't read the configuration file. HELP!!

Please power down the AirPort Extreme and your computer.
Temporarily, connect an ethernet cable from your computer to one of the LAN <-> ports on the AirPort Exptreme.
Power up the AirPort Extreme first, then your computer
Open AirPort Utility, click Manual Setup
Click the word "Status" and a window will open with information about any errors on the AirPort Extreme.

  • How to take advantage of 802.11ac wi-fi with AirPort Extreme?

Greetings. I will be purchasing a new iMac that will support 802.11ac wi-fi and would like to take advantage of this by using the Apple AirPort Extreme but I'm not sure how. I currently have a modem (Cisco DPC3825) from my internet provider, which does not support 802.11ac. If I were to connect the AirPort Extreme to my modem (DPC3825) via an Ethernet cable and then (wirelessly) connect my new iMac to the netowrk, would I receive 802.11ac or just b/g/n still? In addition, when I connect the AirPort Extreme to my modem, will it create two networks (i.e. one network for the AirPort Extremem + my original wifi network) or can you merge it into one network? Hopefully what I'm asking makes sense. Thank you.

If I were to connect the AirPort Extreme to my modem (DPC3825) via an Ethernet cable and then (wirelessly) connect my new iMac to the netowrk, would I receive 802.11ac or just b/g/n still?
802.11ac would be received by the iMac if it connected to the AirPort Extreme wireless signal....and....the iMac was in close proximity to the AirPort Extreme.
802.11ac uses the 5 GHz frequency, and these signals only work well then the router and computer are in the same room or have a line-of-sight relationship  to each other, or very close to that ideal.
In addition, when I connect the AirPort Extreme to my modem, will it create two networks
The AirPort Extreme will create a network with two bands or frequencies.....one  2.4 GHz for "b", "g" and "n" wireless devices and another band, the 5 GHz signal for "n" and "ac" devices.
If you assign the same name to  the AirPort Extreme network that you use for your existing network, and both routers are using the same wireless security settings and password, then everything will act like one "big" network.
If you assign a different name to the AirPort Extreme wireless network, then you will have two different networks....one produced by your existing router and the other produced by the AirPort Extreme.
If you move from one area to another, you will have to log off of one network and log back onto the other network.

  • Creating a bridge with airport extreme (base) and airport express

i am having trouble creating a bridge with airport extreme (base) and airport express. i got the airport express to connect to my network. Airtunes sees it fine. i have an iMac (running Tiger) connected to the airport express via ethernet which i was hoping to get internet on (the iMac doesn't not have built in wireless and i had a spare airport express). now the airport express is no longer visible to the airport setup assistant on that iMac. but, like i mentioned, Airtunes is working fine, and the light is green.
i'm new to the wireless stuff. i am sure i just missed a step. how do i get the iMac to connect to the internet via my airport express bridging to my airport extreme wireless network?
    your help is appreciated.

You can do this with the equipment you have. Configure the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) to act as a WDS main base station and configure the AirPort Express (AX) to act as a WDS remote base station. That will allow you to use the Ethernet port on the AX.
Unfortunately WDS also causes the available wireless bandwidth to be cut in half.

    Diane,
I have added very few apps to my G5. The majority of my time is spent editing photos with PhotoshopCS3. I have software updates set to run weekly and have always kept them up to date. I really believe it's a disk permissions issue...but repairing them doesn't help.
*+Upon installation, I used Archive and Install.+* While I agree that Erase and Install may sound like a good idea, it makes me nervous. I do have everything backed up on a bootable CMS drive, but I'm a photographer and was hoping to not have to erase the G5.
Yes, as I mentioned in the original post, I've downloaded and installed the Airport firmware update. And all software is up to date.
All was working just dandy before the upgrade. Unfortunately now it's sounding like I may have to erase my hard drive and install fresh.
If I do that, is it just a matter then of dragging my photos from the backup disk to the G5? And documents? Etc?? The thought of getting all my photos and important information back on the G5 seems a bit staggering.
