Trouble with AOL IMAP

I have successfully set up everything for my AOL account on Mail.app. Now, after a few weeks, I can not find my trash folder from AOL. Mail.app makes its own folder called "Deleted Messages", and does not recognize the AOL trash folder. I can tell they are different folders when I log in through AOL.com. Any help would be greatly appreciated. P.S. I am running on Leopard.

Hopefully Ali b. sees this, but...
Are you using Port 587?
http://masonsklut.com/how-to-set-up-your-aol-or-aim-mail-account-with-mac-os-x-m ail/
If you have used the AOL Service Assistant to setup AOL on your Mac or you get the “can’t send using server” message, you must change the Server Port to 587 in order to send/receive emails within Mac OS X Mail.

Hi, My connection to the AOL IMAP server has suddenly failed - Says "Not Connected" on Accounts page
I haven't changed anything and this just started failing this morning.
I've saw same issue on my Blackberry PlayBook 64GB.
Is anyone else recently experiencing AOL IMAP Errors?

Yes! Same thing happened suddenly to my Z10 this morning. No AOL.

Where can I find the SSl function on the iPad mail - I am having trouble sending out e-mails on my AOL account on the iPad - no trouble with the MacBook Pro?

Under the line where it has the SSL button, is Authintication set to password?  and the line below that, is there a server port number?  A typical outgoing server port number is 25.

  • Apple mail having trouble with AOL mail

Set it all up fine. Mail comes in but sending is very erratic. Set up the correct imap server on the correct port with the correct authentication. First mail after setting up server goes fine but pretty much randomly mails fail to send with the error that the selcted smtp server cannot be used.
Is this a problem with Apple mail and AOL's propriatory lash up of IMAP mail? <Edited by Moderator>
Can't switch to another smtp server since too many internet filters block AOL mails not sent from the main aol smtp server.
    cheers

    Hi Andrew!
Are the settings posted below, what you are using?
    -Account Type: IMAP
    -Incoming Mail Server: imap.aol.com
-Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.aol.com:Your AOL Screenname Here
    -Server Port: 587

  • Does Apple mail have trouble with AOL E-mail addresses?

When I send E-mail to an AOL E-mail address at least 50% of the time I get this annoying “Delivery Notification” failure crap messages back.
I just copy and paste my original message and I keep sending it until I don't get that crappie message back anymore.
Does anyone else have this problem? If so, did you figure out how to fix this problem?
    Thanks.

I had a bit of trouble sending to AOL in the past. It seemed most often when my email addy had the word MAC in it.
My ISP is Macace, and they would frequently get returned. If I used my throwaway yahoo account all was fine. I thought it was somehow linked to how mail.app did things so I went in and did a test via webmail. The email still got blocked.
Do AOL not like Macs? Who knows what is going on. They have a Mac version of their software so it shouldn't be.

    2006-05-23 20:44:36 -0700: Installed "Security Update 2006-003 (Intel)" (1.0)
Now I can no longer open and sign onto AOL. When I go to open the program, it stops responding before it even gets to the sign on screen. I have tried shutting down & restarting my computer several times to no avail. Since it was working before I installed these updates, I'm guessing one of them is screwing with my AOL. What can I do?
P.S. I'm not very experienced on the Mac. Please keep this in mind when giving me instructions. Thanks in advance

Hi azsumrg1rl! And Welcome To Discussions!
Did you Repair Permissions after the updates were installed?
I don't know if that will help with this particular problem, but it is a good idea to do it anyway.
Before you reinstall AOL, try this.
    Navigate to
HD > Users > Your Home > Library > Preferences.
Put the America Online/AOL folder in the trash.
Empty the trash, and restart the iMac.
A new folder will be created the next time you successfully load AOL, but you will have to reset the AOL Preferences.
See if AOL will load now. If it does, open AOL Preferences, and reset the configurations.
If that doesn't work, there are some other things to try.
    Good Luck!

  • Problem with Yahoo IMAP and Mail...

I'm having an issue with my Yahoo IMAP setup and mail on my desktop:
I have set up my yahoo email account with IMAP on both my iphone 4 and with mail on macbook pro.  It has worked fine, all my folders are synced up on both devices and everything runs well except for one small problem.  When I read an email on my Iphone, the mail program on my macbook pro never knows.  Every day I come back to my computer, and all of my yahoo emails remain as "new" and "unread" even though I had checked all of them on my iphone.  Its very weird because the opposite is not true - in other words - if I check a Yahoo email on my macbook pro, then my Iphone recognizes it and will show it is "read" as soon as I read it on macbook pro.
I also have an IMAP work email hosted by gator and a gmail account and I do not have this problem, its only on my yahoo account.  I have tried the following settings:
    Incoming server - imap.mail.yahoo.com
    Outgoing server - smtp.mail.yahoo.com
    Incoming server - apple.imap.mail.yahoo.com
    Outgoing server - smtp.apple.mail.yahoo.com
I have set everything to ssl with ports 465 and 993.  Still keep getting this same problem that my macbook pro does not recognize when emails have been read on my iphone (for only the yahoo account).
Anybody else having this problem or have any suggestions on how to fix??

    http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mobile/comms/mail/imap-01.html
To set up IMAP on your mobile device please use these settings:
    Incoming Server - imap.mail.yahoo.com
    Outgoing Server - smtp.mail.yahoo.com
Incoming Port - 993 (requires SSL)
    Outgoing Port - 465 (requires SSL/TLS)
Username: full email address (for example, [email protected] or [email protected])
Password: the password you login to Yahoo! with.
If you are having trouble setting up IMAP on your mobile device we recommend reviewing your phones instruction manual or contacting your mobile provider for support.
    http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=78799
You can use the following information to configure IMAP with many mail clients. If you encounter difficulties, we suggest contacting your mail client's customer support department for further instructions -- we're unable to provide assistance with configuring mail clients not listed here.
Incoming Mail (IMAP) Server - requires SSL:     imap.gmail.com
    Use SSL: Yes
    Port: 993
Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server - requires TLS:     smtp.gmail.com (use authentication)
    Use Authentication: Yes
Use STARTTLS: Yes (some clients call this SSL)
    Port: 465 or 587
Account Name:     your full email address (including @gmail.com) Google Apps users, please enter username@your_domain.com
Email Address:     your full Gmail email address ([email protected]) Google Apps users, please enter username@your_domain.com
    Password:     your Gmail password
Please note that if your client does not support SMTP3 authentication, you won't be able to send mail through your client using your Gmail address.
Also, if you're having trouble sending mail but you've confirmed that encryption is active for SMTP in your mail client, try to configure your SMTP server on a different port: 465 or 587.

  • Trouble with aim & mail

I am having trouble getting mail to receive my aim mail. it will send mail through the aim account, but i keep getting this error messagage regarding inbound mail - There may be a problem with the mail server or network. Check the settings for account “Aim account” or try again.
The server error encountered was: The connection to the server “imap.aim.com” on port 587 timed out.
I just got a new macbook, after having a powerbook G4. My G4 didn't have this problem with the aim account, so I don't know what else to do.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Noreen

    Noreen,
Port 587 would be only valid as an Outgoing Server, and not for Incoming Servers. In Mail Preferences/Accounts/Advanced what is the name of the Incoming Server shown?
With an IMAP account not using SSL, the Port would be expected to be 143 -- if using SSL, then Port 993.
More info please, including where advice to attempt to use 587 for the Incoming came from?
    Ernie

  • Apple acct not synched with AOL account

I tried to get into my aol account but as usual it wouldn't recognize the password. When I created an apple account it doesn't have any of my history, including season pass purchases. What can I do? I used the same credit card number. Thanks!

I have a very similar problem. Apparently IMAP access is better than POP3. Well IMAP slows my Mac to a complete stop whereas POP3 is seamless. I deleted my POP3 mailboxes after successfully accessing my GMail accounts via IMAP, then it slowed down.
I've deleted the IMAP accounts a few times, but each time a new account is created it forces me to accept IMAP with no option for POP3. The help file also contains no information on POP3.
I get about 50 emails everyday and my usual point of email access has just become redundant, I must now rely on email via my browser and .
I made this change because the iPhone does not sync downloaded emails with Apple Mail. In Mail on my Mac, the one GMail inbox I have setup says there are 11 unread which it eventually shows yet none appear unread. I'll have to rely on web-based email until this is resolved.
Can anyone help with these IMAP access problems?

  • Serious Problems with AOL

I hope Ali B sees this posting. Looks like you are the AOL Whiz. But I will be just as grateful if anyone has suggestions. I am new to posting, and as other newbies have asked, please forgive my inexperience.
When I saw rsw90's dilemma about continuous problems with AOL, it hit a nerve. I have been an AOL member for decades as well, and have had to deal with cross-platform issues and file cabinet incompatibilities as I went from being a MAC man since 1984 to being forced to the Dark Side by business demands and returned to sanity. The problem is that AOL has seriously neglected MAC, and I seek the mercy of the enlightened about how to navigate this minefield.
In August, my file cabinet (AOL 10.3.7) stopped allowing me to save inbox mail to my personalized file folders using the "save to" button. I communicated with some very lame AOL personnel in Mumbai who promised to escalate the ticket, and I never got any sensible help. Then, the file cabinet froze up and shut down my AOL every time I tried to access. AOL help was useless. It was then that they told me that AOL doesn't automatically back up the file cabinet for MAC as they do for PC users and told me to accept the file cabinet was "corrupted" and "unrecoverable" -- something I cannot accept because there were over 20,000 saved e-mails that have serious impact legally.
As it turns out, the signs were there earlier that the file cabinet was becoming unstable due to the storage volume and I could have protected this by transferring or deleting. I could also have been instructed how to back up externally if they had thought to tell me. Another interesting fact is that the corruption only affected my main user sign-on ID, and none of the others.
Nevertheless, I made copies of the file cabinet that was inaccessible in the desperate hope that someone out there could help me move them to another program and open them, or repair the corruption. I learned from Ali B's posting how to install AOL Service Assistant, which touted that it can open corrupt file cabinets in Mail, but I'm not figgerin' well. I did set up the IMAP for my current AOL, but it only imported the file folders from my current AOL File Cabinet (post-crash e-mails) -- none of the contents. It did start importing my inbox, however. What I am hoping is that I may be able to set up a separate Mail account where I can attempt to import the saved corrupt File Cabinet and plan for the big celebration.
    Any ideas?

    Hi stevekinney2!
You probably have a corrupt PFC - Your AOL Personal Filing Cabinet, caused by an excess amount of stored items.
And I am assuming, that you do not a system backup, correct?
NO guarantees, but try this procedure.
First, If you are able to, open your Filing Cabinet from the AOL Menubar's contextual File menu. If you can't do that while signed on, try signing off, but don't quit AOL, and try again.
If there are things in there that you can't bear to lose, there are a few ways you can save them.
Method 1. Drag the item/items to a New Folder on the Desktop. Name the folder something like Old PFC. This folder can later be placed wherever you wish.
Method 2. Open the item/items, select Save or Save As from the AOL Menubar's contextual File menu. The files will be copied to the Desktop. You can then put them all in a folder, as in method #1.
    Method 3. Open the item/items and make copies in a Word Processing application and again, save to a new folder. This folder can also be placed anywhere you choose, such as the Documents folder, in your Home Account folder, located;
HD > Users > Your Home Account > Documents
After you have verified, that the Email transfer was successful, sign off, and quit AOL.
Go to: HD > Users > Shared > America Online: HERE, you'll find (Your Screenname)'s Filing Cabinet.
Move that file to the Trash, but DO NOT empty the Trash. If this procedure does not rectify your situation, you can replace the new PFC with the old one. But I wouldn't recommend it.
Load AOL, Sign-on and see if it's fixed. If all is well, and you've made the copies of important data, there's really nothing in the old PFC that you need, so you can empty the Trash.
I've never had this particular problem, but I seldom keep more than a few items in my AOL PFC.
If I want to keep an article of mail, I use method #3.
If that doesn't clear it up, sign off and quit AOL. Pull your AOL Your Screenname's Favorites folder, which is located:
HD > Users > Shared > America Online: HERE, to the Desktop.
When you relaunch AOL, a new Your Screenname's Favorites folder will be created.
If the problem is corrected, you can drag the old copy of Your Screenname's Favorites, that is on the Desktop to the Trash, and empty it.
If that doesn't do it you can replace the new Your Screenname's Favorites with the old copy of Your Screenname's Favorites, that is on the Desktop, but again, I don't recommend it.
