Trouble with burned DVDs

Hi, my iBook has stopped reading burned DVDs or CDs. Also, it does not recognize blank discs to burn new material onto them. It plays commercially bought DVDs and CDs just fine, but when a burned or blank disc is inserted (even ones that it created), it spins it around a few times then ejects it. The discs I've been using do play on other computers, just not mine.
What could be the problem, and how could I fix it? Would you suggest finding an external drive, or doing internal work? In every other way, this is still my perfect computer, and I would love to keep using it to make DVDs.

Hi,
It does sound like the Optical drive Lens is on its way out, I would suggest going with a external DVD burner, as it will be much faster and a whole lot cheaper then getting the internal replaced.

  • Trouble with my DVD/CD drive/slot.

I am having some trouble with my DVD/CD drive/slot. It will not accept any CD's or DVD's that I have tried to insert. I have tried restarting the computer and updating software. Does anyone have any ideas that may help? Thanks

try doing a SMC reset and see if that makes your CD/DVD work again.
if that doesn't work, try a PRAM/NVRAM reset.
if not, make an appointment with apple to have them look at it.

  • Problem with burning DVD's

I have Roxio Toast Titanium and I have a problem with burning DVD's. When I put a blank DVD-R in my superdrive, select the files and go to burn; the advanced recording options will not let me deselect the check in "close disk". It is shaded. But when I use a CD-RW I can and so far the Roxio help has...well has not been help at all. I mean why would I spend the money to buy a software package that lets me do the same thing as the basic OS-X disk utility would let me do? Drag a file, burn it and close the disk from any future use....
Sorry if this does not belong here, I did not see a area for general software questions way back in the main forum area not one here.

    Donald,
    Hi and thank you.
To give you more details on what I am trying to do; I am trying to burn in Mac & PC format. I am mainly trying to back up all my assorted college files (I am a college student), these files are lecture notes in Word with embedded audio recordings, standard Word documents such as essays, etc., spreadsheets, PDF documents, etc. The files I am attempting to burn should not be larger than 4.7 gb and Roxio has not given me a warning that it would be.
I am just frustrated that when I put in a DVD-R or -RW I only have one option, and that is to close out the disk when it is finished burning it. I have also gone to the recording tab, on the menue bar, to uncheck the "close disk" box after I put in a blank DVD and before I select files to burn. The option is shadded preventing me from even trying, which is not the case for a CD!
    Thank you!

  • Free - Alternative DVD apps - trouble with burning

    Hello All,
I am still trying to help my son burn the video.
He made his movie in iMovie; it's 63 minutes long, and he got it into iDVD and made menus and such. When he tried to burn it, he ran into issues, though. Selecting any of the encryption options (even Pro, which is supposed to be able to handle movies that long) led to an error message when burning. After trying to prepare the menus, the message was that encoding the menus did not work (no specifics or anything). Any guesses as to why this is happening? Or can anyone recommend another program (preferably free) that would be capable of burning a movie of this length?
    Thank you! Jim

    What version of iMovie?
Any way you can get iMovie HD6? Works great with iDVD 8/9 since it is .dv format.
Be sure you have set iDVD's encoding preferences to either High or Professional Quality...not Best Performance, which is for movies less than 60 minutes.
Check the settings on the menus and submenus to be sure their durations are not too long. He will have to open the inspector window and manually move the slider to make the menu durations shorter.
Be sure that he did not use unauthorized audio in the menus.
Be sure to set the burn speed to slower....4x or less.
I have not made a DVD from iMovie 8 or 9, still sticking with version 6, but I do use iDVD 8/9 (they are the same), and I am running 10.5.8, too. I have had no trouble with iDVD and do find it simple--just so you know that it does work well. Most of my movies are just under 2 hours, most with many chapters, and most of them 30-75 GB in size.
If you could post the error messages, it might help us find out where the problem is.

  • Problems with burned DVD in iDVD - Works in some players, not in others

Hi, I'm having a strange problem with a DVD I burned in iDVD.
I have a disc image that I made in iDVD and then burn the Audio_TS and Video_TS folders to a DVD.
    I burned to a Memorex DVD+R.
The video pops up fine and plays on my computer after it burns, but if I eject the disc and try to re-insert it, the DVD preview says "Supported disc not found". It did this same thing when I tried it in my Macbook.
It works fine in my standard DVD player, but I also tried it on my Playstation 3 and it did not play.
A few things I am going to try is buring directly from iDVD instead of first making a disc image, and also using DVD-R, although I heard that DVD+R is generally a better format to use.
Someone also told me that DVD+R does not play on macs, which I question.
If anyone has any other suggestions or might know why this is happening, I would greatly appreciate it. It is an important project that needs to be done soon! Thanks.

The disc image option is within iDVD: File > Save as Disc Image. If you switch to DVD map map mode you can drag your movie to a spot prior to the menu so that the movie plays automatically when put into the player. Under advanced, you can set the movie to loop.... otherwise I think it goes back to the menu when done playing. BTW, all DVDs MUST have a menu it is part of the DVD specification. It is just a matter of whether you see the menu. As far as exporting your project back to tape... you won't loose any quality and your audio, along with your video and any editing to each will export back to tape. However, a MP3 is not generally considered a higher quality file (although perhaps the recorder was closer to the source?). As a matter of fact, if you are editing your audio I strongly suggest using a file sampled at at least 16-bit/48Khz, AIFF (or WAV or anything lossless).
In regards to the slow burn speed: I agree that a slower burn speed is better than the fastest burn speed (due to error corrections ect). However, I would choose a middle of the road burn speed. If my choices are 4x, 6x, or 8x, I would choose 6x. If it is 2x, 4x, 6x, I would choose 4x. And yes, quality of blank media can effect the playback of a disc that played once just fine.

  • Problem with Burning DVD/Audio

iMovie HD version 5.0.2. I have been editing movies and burning DVDs for more than a year and have not encountered this problem before. When I play my latest movie, there doesn't seem to be a problem with the music that I imported in only one of the audio tracks. However, when I try to burn a DVD, the video encoding proceeds as usual but the audio encoding stalls when it appears to be about 90% complete. I have produced movies that are 2 hours long and have not run into this problem. The current movie is a little over 1 hour long, so I don't think the length is a problem.
Background info: As in the past, the source of the movie I am editing is a DVD that Walmart converted from old video films. I CINEMATIZED the DVD which I have done in the past to be able to edit the movie. When I copied the WALMART version of the movie, I only imported/copied the video portion and NOT the audio.
I hope this explanation of my problem is detailed enough. I am not very technologically educated so I am limited in my ability to explain the details.

    Hi
    May be this applies.
    *No audio on DVD disc.*
    Most common origin:
    1 Imported audio from iTunes:
    • In iTunes copy out as an audio-CD .aiff
    • Use this in Your movie project
2 Strange audio formats like .mp3, .avi etc.
    • Change them to .aiff. Use an audio editor like Audacity (free)
    Before burning the DVD:
    • Do a DiskImage (File menu and down)
    • Double click on the .img file
    • Test it with Apple DVD-player
    If OK:
    • Make Your DVD - or -
    • Burn from DiskImage with Apple Disk Util tool - and at an as slow speed as possibly eg x1
    • OR burn with Roxio Toast™ if You got it

    Hi everybody,
    I have a strange problem.
If you could help me it will be great.
I burned a Memorex 8x DVD+R on my DR8-A at 4x speed. This works fine.
So after i look my DVD in Windows Explorer and it shows me the all the files ( i have twenty video files of 200 MO each) of my burned DVD. But i can only access to the 10 first ones. I see the others but i can't copy them to hardrive, i can't  launch them with Windows Media Player (they are movie files).

  • Experience with burning dvds on tibook 400

I'm looking to upgrade my tibook 400 to a dvd-rw drive. Just wondering if the others have upgraded their drives and have experience burning dvds on a tibook. Is it unbearably slow and also are the burns reliable to you get a lot of coasters.
    thanks in advance

I have not upraded a powerbook but I recently put one of the newest NEC superdrives in my POWERMAC G4 466mhz, which is similar speed mac to your powerbook, and can honestly say its exceeded my expectations by some margin. To put the speed in to perspective it can burn a 600mb CDR in about 2 mins. It does DVDs in a pretty reasonable time. I think the speed is more related to the dvd drive, not your processor (although I may be wrong). You also need quite alot of hard drive space as data has to be stored there first.
I use Toast Titanium to burn which seems much more reliable than the Finder and I wholeheartedly recommend. I have had no dvd coasters on the small number ive done, although I used to get lots of cd coasters with the old CDRW which it replaced.

I put in a dvd and when I try to open up the apple dvd player I see this error

Any ideas as to why I'm getting this error

Can you boot back into OS9 and see if the DVD player works from there? If so I guess that would mean a software issue with a component in OSX. Does OSX have trashable preferences in the same way as OS9?

  • Trouble with external dvd

My internal dvd is down & attached a lacie external dvd, but idvd won't recognize it when I try to burn dvd. Is there a preference to choose which dvd I want to use?

Support for external burners wasn't added by Apple until the iLife '06 applications.
Prior to iLife '06, you needed to use a non-Apple patch for external drive support.
Check out http://www.lacie.com/support/drivers/index.htm and see if LaCie DiscRecording Support 1.23 for Mac OS X 10.3.2 or later will do what you want.

  • Trouble with burning only CDs

    I'm confused.
Do brand new unused CD-R disks deteriorate over time? Or do I have a faulty Optical Drive?
I don't burn discs often so I'm no expert.  I've got a stack of CD-Rs (around 50 I think) that I have gradually been working through over several years.  I'm getting towards the bottom of the stack until now I'm looking at the last 6 or 7 blank discs of that stack.
I keep trying to use these discs but my iMac won't even boot them onto my desktop.  To eject them I have to restart my iMac and force them to eject by holding down the left mouse button while the iMac starts up. Disk Utility can't see them.  Up until recently my CD-Rs have worked fine.  In fact it wasn't until I wanted to update my Disk Warrior (DW) CD that a problem began to appear.
I tried to update DW.  All appeared fine.  I used the newly burned DW Update in my iMac.  DW got part way into loading (most of the way in fact) and then froze. I've been using DW and it occassional updates for many years and this was the first time that I had used an Alsoft Update CD and have it fail to boot up. So I binned it and tried again assuming the CD-R was a duffer.  So I burned another copy, tried it in my iMac and it worked fine.
So I had two DW discs. One duff, one okay.
My Dad had a problem with his iMac.  I used the duff disc (just curious, you know). Somehow it now worked fine!
Lately I can't get any of my remaining CD-Rs to appear on the desktop and I have to restart, holding down the left mouse key, to get then to eject.
I bought some CD-RWs.  These worked fine for a while.  So I inferred that the original CD-Rs had degraded to unusability somehow and thought no more about  it.
    Until today.
I was in a hurry to burn some documents to a CD-RW but the process failed on the verification stage. Could reading be a problem but burning be okay I wonder?
All discs work fine on my daughters MBP I noticed.
I now find that only blank CDs appear on the desktop.  Some commercial CDs and ones with home made content get spat out again after the drive spend a minute or two making chugging noises.  Then again other such CDs work fine or work okay the next day.  DVDs don't seem to be affected - mostly. Hybrid SACDs work one day, not the next.
Most confusing, but the trouble I get burning anything reliably makes me think the drive itself could be on its way out.  There are no software settings that I have touched let alone think of.
I wonder, is there any software available that I can use to test the device out?   The Internal optical drive is an OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5630A.

I tried a different brand of disk, but it only copied up to half way through song 9 and not finishing the rest, and gives me the same message. can anybody help?

  • Trouble with mediasmart DVD

After looking at different answers on how to supposedly fix HP Mediasmart DVD after a year of having problems with it, I thought I would be able to use it once again. I uninstalled it from my computer, then used the Recovery Manager to reinstall it. Once done, I opened Mediasmart DVD to see if the problem fixed itself, and when I did, it asked if I wanted to check for updates. After I did that, I inserted a Blu-Ray disc to watch, and it asked me if I wanted to activate my player. I clicked "yes", and it took me to the CyberLink website to download a patch. I downloaded it, then restarted MediaSmart. As I did, it recognized the Blu-Ray again, and asked again if I wanted to activate. I clicked yes, and it returned me to the same webpage. I'm stuck. What do I do? Any help would be appreciated.

  • Problem with burning dvd"s in idvd

I have just learnt from local Genius bar that idvd is no longer supported by Apple {after I had wasted loads of recordable dvds!}. The answer is to download midvd from the apple store - free at present and "share" from "imovie" direct to 'itunes", then drag movie to "desktop", the movie can then be dragged into midvd. I found the whole business of making a dvd  very easy with this new software.

    Note for potential users:
iDVD (and iDVD Pro) only supports MOV files containing H.264 video. Editor codecs (such as AIC and ProRes) are not supported.
    http://shedworx.com/midvd-supported-file-types
It is not an adequate substitute for iDVD.
Why is there no iDVD on my new Mac? How do I get it and how do I install it?

  • Problem with burning DVD

    Hi,
Is there anybody who can help me? I try to burn a lot of photos at DVD (DVD+R), but there are problems. Burning is OK, but veryfying not. Then I get the message "Sector 1 unreadeble" and that's it. I got a new DVD station in my iMac, but the problem still goes on.

Does your iMac have an internal CD/DVD drive, or are you using an external CD/DVD burner?  If it's an external USB burner, do you have *ANY* other USB devices connected to your Mac other than your keyboard and/or mouse?
