-trouble with Cross Dissolve

Hi
wondering if some one can help , i put a cross dissolve between two clips and can not get it to work, if i put any other tranistaion they all work fine.
why
Thanks

What happens when you try to add a dissolve?
And are you sure it isn't a HANDLE issue?
#1 Transitions "Insufficient Content"
Shane's Stock Answer #1:
You need to make sure that your clips have enough media (called 'handles') at the beginning of the incoming clip and at the end of the outgoing clip for the transition. For example, if you have a 1 second (30 frame) dissolve, your in and out point need to be at least 15 frames from the edge of the clip.
What you are running into is that you are marking an out point at the end of a clip then adding a cross dissolve, say 20 frames in duration. Since the dissolve is centered on the cut, it will start 10 frames before the cut, and try to go 10 frames AFTER the cut...which it can't do.
What you need to do is plan how long your dissolve will be and back-time your cut so that it works.
a full 1 second crossfade reaches 15 frames into each clip. So, if you want to change a cut to a crossfade, there has to be at least 15 additional frames of each clip.
Say you're trying to crossfade from one clip into the very first frame of a second clip. FCP cannot 'create' 15 more frames of the second clip to do a crossfade. If they're not there, you're out of luck.
FCP has to extend the end of your first clip by 1/2 of your transition length, and the beginning of your second clip by 1/2 of your transition length, so those frames need to be in your system. The nature of a crossfade is mixing two clips together.

  • Trouble with Cross dissolve duration

I amediting stils with motion and I can't get my video cross dissolve transitions to extend. they are basically 1 or 2 frames that's it. What am I doing wrong?

Trim your ins and out by an amount equal to the length of the dissolve you want to insert.
EG. 30 frame dissolve: trim outgoing clip by 15 frames... trim incoming clip by 15 frames... butt clips together and add the dissolve.

  • Intermittent problem with cross dissolve and chroma key

It seems that in 1 out of 10 videos I produce in Final Cut Pro there is a problem with the cross dissolve effect and chroma key. What happens is that during the cross dissolve, clip A fades out with a green tint and clip B fades in with a green tint.
Today I am working with two videos that I captured using the same work flow on the same day. One project exhibits the tint while the second project does not. If I import the problematic footage into the good project the tint problem follows the footage. In the good footage, the cross dissolve produces a result that does not have a green tint. If I re-capture the "bad" footage the results are the same.
Has anyone else experienced this and does anyone have an idea how to resolve this problem?
    Thank you.
    Dual G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

In my project, both clips are source clips with Chroma, Color Smoothing and Matte Choker applied. A dissolve from non-chroma clip to chroma clip works fine. Only problem is with two chroma clips. In my dissolve, the error appears as red fringing in the area between the two masks.< </div>
You're using creative shorthand that doesn't help. "Chroma clip" means the clip to which you have applied all of these effects? What masks? Where are you getting the masks?
To understand what's going on with all them itty bitty pixels in a stack of interactive effects, do me a favor: render out a short piece, say 10 seconds of each of your chromaclips as separate movies over transparency using the Animation codec. Reimport them and put them over a solid colored Dissolve between them using different types of dissolves. Post back and tell us (me) what's going on.
I still consider this to be a bug -- nesting adds more steps to the workflow than if this bug did not exist. < </div>
It's not a bug. Your pixels are running down a pathway. It's a question of building the correct pathway and having the correct pixel wranglers with the right kinds of cattle prods.

  • Problem with Cross Dissolve

I have a couple of clips I want to add the default Cross Dissolve between. The first clip is 04;04 sec., and the other clip is 04;12 sec. When I add the dissolve between them, it only comes in at a duration 00;01; while, when I add the same dissolve to the beginning or end of a clip, it has a duration of 01;00 (which is what I want between the clips.)
Since I have enough footage on each clip (right?), shouldn't the default dissolve be applied at 01;00?
(P.S. This same thing is happening at many places along the timeline.)
    Thanks.

    Hi(Bonjour)!
That's because both clips must have some "unused" material to "build" the transition itself.
    We call this "handles".
To get a 1 second transition, the outcoming (the first one) and incoming (the second one) clips must have at least 15 frames of unused material: 15 frames after the out point of outcoming and 15 frame before the in point of incoming one. This is related to the fact that FCE keep the same sequence's duration with or without transition.(iMovie decrease the duration of your movie when you insert a transition).
Instead of cuting your clips as suggested earlier, use the ripple tool (RR) and adjust the clips.

  • Problem with cross dissolve transitions

I had several short interview clips that I had made into several short Imovies. I wanted to combine the interviews into one longer movie. Each short clip has an intro clip.
The problem occurs when I copy each short clip and paste into the long version. The beginning and end of each clip is clipped somewhat. I think this might be because it's making a new cross dissolve from an existing cross dissolve?
When I remove everything but the interview clip from the short movies then paste into the longer version this problem doesn't happen. Any idea why this might be happening?

If you made the short clips by export the movie with the intro there is probably no extra media available to make the overlap for the transition. Check the preferences for doing the transition if it's set to all or half. That might help you, but it may just not be possible.

  • Problem with Cross Dissolve and Opacity

I've been noticing that Cross Dissolve has been acting goofey for awhile but have overcome any problems by manually adjusting opacity settings.  However, this time I can't get either to cooperate. Notice the line appearing below the phrase "the nutrient recommendation map" in the image below.  This line or a similar line will appear as title either cross dissolve into one another or if they are stand alone and the opacity settings fade them in and out.  The blinking of the lines is sporadic and changes as I make adjustments.  I'll "fix" one spot but they will start to blink at other points in the time line and in different areas.
    Any ideas?

I ask because I think I'm having a similar problem.  Went home and updated PPro to 5.0.3 and still have the issue.
The screen shot here show the first seconds of an HDV30/60 sequence as the video fades in (bottom layer - lasts about 2 seconds).  The top layer is a mask to create the effect of a cinescope camera (no fade).  I've cropped the left for demo purposes.
The bottom layer is regular ol' HDV footage.  The top layer was created using a Photoshop file with 2 squares using the shape tool and colored black.
For pre-view and render, you can see a light-colored hair line around the top mask.  I've applied different effect to remove it, but it won't work.  In fact, some effects make it stand out even more.  I've also tried using other assets from the PSD (PNG, PPro black video, etc).  I also tried the cropping work-around but it did not work.
The screenshot is subtle but it's there.  The main thing is that it can be VERY noticable in the BD-R discs I've created played back on set-top players so I'm really hoping there is a fix for it.  I did notice that it will appear when I scrub with my finger on the left mouse key.  As soon as I let go it appears again.
So PPro is up to date, graphics card is up to date, and I've tried suggested fixes and a few of my own with no luck.  Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Erik

  • Problem with Cross Dissolve: The video cuts out during the transistion

I'm encountering a problem with the Cross Dissolve transistion wherein during the period in which the transition should be happening the video instead drops out.  There's plenty of heads and tails available on both clips, but as soon as the timeline hits the start of the transition "from' clip cuts out, revealing the background or black if there's no background underneath and then the "go-to" clip cuts in at the end of the transition.
    Any help would be appreciated.

I've been having this issue and it's driving me crazy.  It's random, that some cross dissolves work, and others don't.  Seems to affect AVCHD footage.  Adobe seems to be aware of the issue.
The work around that I've seen posted by a forum user "Mitch W" is to apply a GPU accelerated effect to one of the clips in the pair.  The effect can be turned to "0" so as not to alter the video.  The act of doing this, makes premiere see the clip differently, and render the cross dissolve correctly.
Fast Blur, set to "zero", seems to do the trick, and allows it to work with CUDA acceleration turned on.  I did notice that the work around was broken by changing the playback resolution in the viewer window.  In that situation, I had to apply the GPU effect to the other clip in the pair to make it work again.
I don't know what will happen if I change my playback resolution again...

  • Trouble with Cross-References

    FM11 / DITA 1.2
What could cause a particular cross reference to consistently NOT work? I know that's vague. I'll try to give a more specific example:
Let's say I have a collection of xrefs across several XML files in a DITA map. Some xrefs might even point to the same item (usually a <title> tag with an ID attribute). On output to a book with FM components, particular xrefs just will not work (they output as "unresolved"). I can fix it manually in the FM file, but I'd rather it work correctly in the first place, especially since I deal with translation in to several languages, and if I can't get an xref to just work, I have to fix it many, many times.
I've tried deleting the xref and starting again; I've tried changing the ID attribute in case there was some kind of conflict...I still have trouble with that particular xref (and this happens with more than one xref). What else can I try?
Again, I know this is vague. I'd be happy to elaborate on relevant points. I just don't currently have time to write a massive description and I want to get this question out.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi ohnehosen...
Are you up to date on your FM11 patches? It's hard to say what could be causing this problem .. does sound strange.
While this shouldn't be the problem, you might try linking your xref to the container "topic" element (topic, concept, task, whatever is the immediate parent of the title you're pointing at). While in theory you should be able to xref to a title, that's not really the intent, your cross-ref is referencing a "topic" not the title within the topic. The same goes for a figure or table, you reference the fig or table element not the title within those elements.
I'd assume that the code in the FM-DITA plugin was designed to work by referencing the container ,it probably wasn't tested the way you're doing it, and there may be some flakiness that would cause this to not always work.
Give it a try .. let us know how it goes.

  • PSD with Cross Dissolves look pixelated

At some point recently (last few months) we've found that PSD files that are in FCP will sometimes come out massively pixelated if there is a cross dissolve applied to the beginning of the clip.
I searched and found a person having a similar issue back in January but no answer to his question:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1562664
We've tried various setting for the PSD files but the same issues keep happening. We've also exported the sequence in various ways and same issue happens.
    Anyone else seeing this problem?
    Thanks
    Rob

The OP ignored my question about format, pixel dimensions and monitor, so I'm at a loss as to what else could be the problem.
Possibly CMYK rather than RGB, perhaps?
I've never had problems with PSDs since I learned how to preserve transparency.

  • Please, I need help with cross dissolve!

I've posted this before with no replies and I've done a ton of research online trying to find an answer for this problem, with no luck.  Surely I am not the only one having this problem with iMovie!  When I put in cross dissolves in a movie, some of them are jumpy and have visual flashing and stuttering between clips.  Does anyone know why this is and what I can do?  I am pretty stuck with my projects until I can find a solution. Any help would be appreciated!

In a codec like h.264, it achieves compression by shooting 1 full frame of video. This is followed by 24 or so partial frames which contain information like what has changed since the full frame, the direction of motion, etc. This is called a "Group of Pictures" compression. This compression is great for playback, but is difficult for editing.
For example, in a cross dissolve transition, it needs something like every other frame to create the transition. In a compressed format, all these frames do not exist. They have to be calculated. If you optimize the video clip, all the grames will be converted to full frames, and the cross dissolve can easily get the frames it needs without a lot of calculations.

  • Problem with cross dissolve...Dropped frames.

when i add cross dissolve it dose't work, it says one or more frames were dropped  during playback.

and have you tried rendering it?  Figuring out exactly what's gonna render is not particularly intuitive, so post back if things don't make sense.

  • Trouble with adding dissolves

I'm sure there's an obvious answer to this but I'm stumped. The "EFFECTS" tab has disappeared from the browser and I don't know how I lost it or how to get it back. Can't find anything in manuals about why the tab would go away. I was in the thick of a problem that was never a problem before, which is that I could not add a cross dissolve between a slug and a title clip, it kept coming out as 1 frame of fade between the clips. Now, after trying it by various familiar means, suddenly the EFFECTS tab is gone! HELP! (please & thanx) - Gary

Created in FCE. This is truly baffling. I basically just created the text, white on black, and not knowing any better, stacked them on the timeline to see if that would work... And it did! Except for the strange staggered fade effect. I swear opacity is the same on all. Only filter is a .5 anti-alias on each clip.
I created a menu graphic for this VFX showreel exactly the same way, one text clip atop the other in a stack of 12 clips. They had to be on seperate tracks so that each chapter could have a highlighted text title. I did this in the most straightforward way possible... Background on the bottom track, 2 reel title clips on the top 2 tracks and 10 chapter text/title clips on the 10 tracks in between. When playhead moves across the timeline they all show equally, 100%.
Thanks for looking into it. Now I have two mysteries unstead of one. Doh!

  • Trouble with Cross-fades!

I've inserted some Live Type in between some video footage and I am noticing that it is only grabbing one side instead of two when I try to cross-dissolve the edit. Is there a reason as to why this is happening?

Your LiveType clip probably doesn't have enough "handle" frames to support the transition's duration.  Set an IN point about 15 frames into the LiveType clip then reapply the transition.

  • Trouble with adding dissolves addendum

Okay, I got the EFFECTS tab back, it was unchecked in the window. Problem remains, what I've been doing for awhile now, dragging a dissolve from the browser to the playhead position between clips... IS NOT WORKING ANYMORE! What the heck am I missing here?!

Delete FCE preferences, repair the permissions and re-boot if the trouble persists.
