Trouble with "data transfer" from old computer. Cannot open documents. Please help! Thank you.

Apple did a "data transfer" from our old computer onto our new iMac, and we cannot open any of our old documents that were "transfered." When I open them in "TextEdit," all I get is a lot of random letters and symbols. I've tried everything, please help. Thank you!

What old documents, you need to be much more specific. The info we are loooking for is what app created them, what the file extension is etc...

Trouble with transferring iTunes from old computer to new computer.

I have tried twice; once using the iPod and once using an external storage hard drive to transfer my music.
The libray comes over but not the playlists. Worst problem is that now the music "skips" as though it was on a old fashioned record player! Yikes, can anyone help? What have I done wrong?
Equipment specs: old computer = Compac Evo N1020v with Windows XP Professional
new computer = Dell 1505 with Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004

You may/must have had music files stored outside of your iTunes library.
I'd recommend going to the Finder and then via the search box look for files with mp3 aif m4a aac etc. depending on the music format your digital music had. With the list of files shown you should be able to learn which files were stored outside of your music > itunes folder
Chances are they could be burried somewhere under your documents, downloads, desktop, ... we all have different storage and organization habits.
Then when you find the missing files, on the new computer you can do add to library and go to the folder on the other computer where the missing files are - if your systems are networked - or sneak them over using a USB thumb drive or portable hard drive if you have lots of files, or if you like to have an extra backup of that music, copy to optical disc.

Entourage data transfer from old computer

Firewired Entourage Microsoft User info from my PowerBook G4 to the new MacBook Pro>Documents then launched Entourage expecting the old data to transfer. Didn't happen. Even tried to put a copy in hard drive. Anyone know the answer?

It's not automatic unless you manually replace the default user data file that Entourage creates when it's installed. There's an "Import Wizard" under Entourage's File menu. It should walk you through the process. It moves the old data into the new default folder.
The only trouble I had in importing is that, with two HDs and four partitions, I mixed up older backups and the most recent user file that I needed to import. Eventually, my feeble brain remembered where I put it and the import took only seconds.

Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
Or this - Delete the account in Mail and then set it up again. Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Accounts Tap on the Account, then on the red button that says Remove Account.

I had the same issue this morning downloading a pre-order of Alanis, Flavors of Entanglement . I noticed that the only thing that had changed fro me was that I had some song credits for purchasing ticketmaster tickets over the past few weeks. When I went ahead and spent my remaining credits... it downloaded with no prompting or trouble. Maybe the credits issues hangs it up?

Correct, USB local sync was taken away from iphones and ipads with 10.9.1 and 2. We are not allowed to speculate on rumours it might come back in 10.9.3 plus new iTunes. Either wait and see or explore Syncmate 5 beta free trial.

I'm not sure this is what you're looking for, but it might help:
"If you made the Windows partition too small
First, back up all the information on your Windows partition. Then run Boot Camp
Assistant to restore your disk to a single volume. Restart your computer and use Boot

Transfer from old computer (to and from iPhoto 08')

So I want to transfer my old computer's iPhoto Library (which is '08) to my new computer with ilife '08. How do I do this so I don't lose my events and such? I don't want to use the migration assistant when transfering. I could use target disk mode on my old computer, but I am not sure how to import that old computer's iphoto library into the new computer's iphoto library. Thank You.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. First rename the iPhoto library package on the old computer and then copy the entire iPhoto library package to the Pictures folder of the new Mac. Thendownload and run BatChmod on the iPhoto Library folder with the settings shown here, putting your administrator login name, long or short, in the owner and group sections. You can either type in the path to the folder or just drag the folder into that field. That will insure the ownership and permissions is set correctly for the new owner.
Now download and run the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager. It will let you merge the two libraries while keeping the keywords, comments, titles and albums of both. It's the best option to do that. There is a free way to get the events from one library into the other and keep the comments, titles and keywords but it involves exporting each event from one library to a folder with the same name as the event and using the Include titles and keyword option of the export. Then importing those folders into the destination library. It can be done but is a lot of work.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

I have set up several EVENTs for my photos in iPhoto. Now when I click on an Event, I want to arrange the pictures within this event , when I click on the picture I want to move, it does not move, it stays in place. ( yellow fram around the picture does appear ) I clicked on the VIEW tab, selected " sort EVENTS" than I slide over to manually and the word appears in grey rather than black . Therefore I am unable to move the picture to the place I want it to be within that same event. Please be kind and Help, thank you, manfred from jupiter

My version of iPhoto is : " iPhoto 08 " , version 7.1.5 ( 378 )
I set up an " Album " as you suggested and this procedure works, I am able in this new Album to change the pictures around as I want it to be.
However in checking back at the same " Event" Album / Gallery the pictures still remain the old way and do not show the changes I made in the new Album version.
I guess that's the way it will be. Take it or leave it..... or do you have another suggestion ???? Thank you for looking into my problem. Please let me know. Thank you again manfred from jupiter

If you have a rescue email address (which is not the same thing as an alternate email address) set up on your account then you can go to https://appleid.apple.com/ and click 'Manage your Apple ID' on the right-hand side of that page and log into your account. Then click on 'Password and Security' on the left-hand side of that page and on the right-hand side you should see an option to send security question reset info to your rescue email address.

The best way is to connect the two computers together by ethernet or firewire target disc mode and move the whole itunes folder from the old computer to the new.
