Trouble With Disk Mode

Ive had my Ipod 4th Gen (b+w) for about a year and ive recently seen that the amount of songs dont match up with the amount of gig's the ipod has used up. I looked at the notes and contacts and there are folders that i did not make, with encoding and random letters. I try to delete this folders but it says that it "Cannot Delete, Cannot read source"
What should i do so that these random folders dont take up so much room!

dont you have all your files backed up in itunes?
if not, do the following:

  • I am having trouble with disk space,

I am having trouble with disk space, I am always getting the error message that I need to delete files on my start up disk, I am all out of space. I cant even save a file to my desktop without getting the message, Is there a way I can free up space. I am not very computer savvy, being a pensioner I  cannot afford expensive options.  I was familiar with the old apple imac, but I was given a macbook pro for my birthday, and am trying to work it out.  I use it mostly for photos and web.

    Jillian,
I'm assuming this is a second-hand machine.  If it is brand new, get it to Apple because it's their problem, not yours.
First thing you should do is go to Programs: Utilities: Disk Utlity and choose "Repair Permissions."  If you don't have the OS X system disk (a DVD) go ahead and verify the Disk. It can't fix itself, so to speak, but can tell you if there is a problem.  iIf you have the OS X system disk then boot off the disk, go to Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.  Assuming all is OK:
You don't need to download any programs to get started on figuring out why all your space is gone.  Try this first:
Oh, when deleting, especially at first, you may have to move only small folders or even files, of 100 MB or so to the trash, then empty the trash.  As the free space increases, you can trash progressively larger files.  To delete files, the computer needs to create even more files to tell it what files it is deleting before it deletes them.  I know, go figure.;)
It would not be a bad idea, and is in fact a very good idea, to run the disk utility "Repair permissions" after every half-dozen trash/empty trash cycles and then restart the computer.
The basic plan is to search for unreasonably sized folders.
    From the Finder:
Open a window, click in the window and then:
Go to menu item View. (If you click on the desktop instead of a window, you'll get a different set of view options, none of which is the one you want.)
Click on it and move the cursor to the bottom choice, Show View Options (alternative Apple (Command)-J).  Make sure the checkbox "Calculate all sizes" is checked. If it isn't, check it and then click on "Use as default" When checked, it will show you the size of a folder.  If it was unchecked, don't be surprised if nothing seems to be happening as it will take awhile for the computer to calculate the size of, literally, thousands of folders.  But some will start to show up right away. If you open a new window and don't see any folder sizes, Repeat the Show View Options routine above and if Calculate all sizes is checked, just wait.
I've heard you Aussies enjoy a beer or two.  If your Mac has to calculate all the folder sizes, this might well be a good time to have a cold one or two, as it will take some time.
Go to the root level, which is "Computer" or "_Your Disk Name_," generically Macintosh under Devices in the sidebar.
Make sure you are in list view and can have the size column visible.  Click on it (turns blue-grey) and it will sort by size, large to small or the reverse.  Click again to reverse the sort order.
On my 10.6.8 machine, I have
    98 GB under Users.
22 GB under Applications. If you only have the Apple-supplied applications, you probably have between 4 and 6 GB here.
    Library is 24.5 GB
    System is 4.6 GB
Other than a few trivially small files or folders, that should be about it for the root level.
If you have two System files, you shouldn't, and will need to get rid of one.  Ask for advice before deleting one or the other.  If you have a, "Previous System," or "Old System," -- can't remember the language, you can proably safely delete it if you are satisified with how your computer is working.
The Library is a candidate for bloat.  Some applications, especially those that manipulate audio or video, store the bulk of their code, generally resources of one type or the other, in the Application Support folder. For instance, I have a 10.5 GB folder of Live Type in my Application Support folder.  Honestly, I don't know what program it is for, but don't care because I upgraded to a 3/4 TB drive.  In contrast, on my 10.7.1 computer, which has little more than the Apple supplied software on it at this point, uses only 1.5 GB for Application Support.  The support folders will remain even if the program itself is deleted.  As a general rule, I wouldn't bother checking out anything under 300 MB or so.  Any folders over that, you should note for possible deletion _but_ be sure to ask someone with more knowledge about this what it is used for before deleting.  If it is used for some program that isn't on your machine, meaning the program has been deleted, you can safely delete it.  If the program is still on the machine, decide if you will use that program and, if not, delete the program and its application support files.
My next largest folder in the Library is Audio at 2.7 GB.  I have audio editing programs, so that makes sense. You probaby have one also, but shouldn't be over 500 MB or so.
Next is Printers at 1.4 GB.  This is a good place to clear up space.  You'll see folders with various printer brands.  Do you have a Brother printer?  No?  Trash it.  Just keep the folder with your printer brand and the PPD folder and trash the rest.  If you want to get real fancy, open your brands folder and delete the files for every model other than the one you have.
My next largest is Fonts at 490 MB.  Leave that alone. In fact, unless Fonts is something insane like 2 GBs, stop deleting from the Library.
Go to Users.  There could be between one and more than one user.  (Fudge of an answer there.)  There is no such thing as a guideline for user folder size.  Is there a previous user?  If so, check with them and see if you can delete it.  I have a "dummy" administrative - level user that can be used for some esoteric rescue operations and it takes up a trivial 33 KB or something like that while my own account is pushing 100 GB.
You'll see several folders, Music, Pictures, Desktop, etc.  This is stuff you or the previous user have created.  If you don't want it, delete it.  You will also see, aha! another Library folder.  There shouldn't be many folders over 100 MB here except for Mail and our friend Application Support.  I get a lot of mail, rarely delete any, and have carried it over from 10.3 and measures out at 3.7GB.  Still, if its someone elses mail and you don't want it, you can delete it, but again, check with more knowledgable people as there are probably some files and folders you absolutely should not delete, others that you should delete from within Mail, and some you can manually delete.
My Application Support Folder weighs in at 1.4 GBs, of which 1.2 GBs is for Final Vinyl.  That's a lot.  Sneaky sucker stored some untitled audio files in there.  Bye! OK, now the Application Support folder is down to 145 MB.  So, I'd say anything much over that should be investigated for possible deletion.  Close up Library and move on.
Downloads may be very small or very large.  Depends on how meticulous the previous user was in deleting or moving to a more appropriate location.  Ask them if there is anything they want, and if no, delete it.
My Application folder has Zero KB because I always install at the root, administrative level.  If there is anything there, figure out if you want to use it or not.  If not, trash it.
    Overall:
    1) Don't sweat the small stuff.  The days are long gone when searching a hard drive for a 100 K file to delete is worthwhile.
    2) Start small.  A disk that full is going to be pretty touchy, so once you have identified a bloated folder, go inside of it and trash the smaller files and folder, then empty the trash, then delete a few more files, empty the trash, etc.
    3) Don't forget to periodically Repair Permissions and restarting the computer.
    4) If you are unsure about whether a folder or file can be safely deleted, ask someone knowledgable or just knock off for the day and hit it again tomorrow.  Seriously, an unanswerable question you have might well be answered by sleeping on it and attacking it the next day.
    5) As Douglas Adams wrote: DON'T PANIC!
    Best of luck!

  • Can anyone help with disk mode?

I have read but not the right answer what I had with my ipod problem. My ipod won't turn on and showing disk mode. I try to connected with my comp. still did not change or turn on. Can anyone help me with this?

Try Resetting your iPod. Hold down the MENU and SELECT (centre) buttons for five or ten seconds until you see the Apple logo appear then the menu button to go to the normal display. Have a look at this link as well: iPod won't turn on

  • Trouble with bridge mode and port forwarding

I have a Westell Model 6100F DSL modem in bridge mode into my network and I'm having trouble forwarding ports. Is there any general guidance available to do this. I have set many of my friends networks up to allow port forwarding but all have been on other service providers, mainly cable. (my experience) My network is the only one I have had trouble with.
Basically, my question is, while in bridge mode, does the modem forward all incoming traffic to my NAT router or do I need to apply special port forwarding settings in the modem to allow this?
If bridge mode is the reason I cannot forward the ports, can someone explain how to set the WEstell 6100F back to factory defaults so I can start over.
    Any other suggestions?
    Thanks in advance.
    Paul

If bridge mode is set up correctly, your router should be holding the Public IP address (basically not something that is a 192.168 address) as shown at http://www.whatismyip.com/ and compared against what IP your router has.
If your router has the public IP, all problems lie with either your router or your PC's firewall and configuration. I'd check out portforward.com for some guides on forwarding ports for your router or poarticular application if you need some additional help.

  • Trouble with viewing mode MONITOR

There is a way to use viewing mode MONITOR  in WPT (web publish tool) with my front pannel minimized??
I used WTP to create a web monitor, it display snapshots every 60 seconds. It works fine if my FP is maximized. But if I minimize the FP, the web monitor only displays a gray square.
How can I use a web monitor when FP is minimized???????
    Raymundo Cassani

    Hi Eric.
Thaks for your answer. About the workarounds  that  you  post.
Keep the front panel window open.
    Programmatically
adjust the front panel position to detect when the window is minimized
and then compensate for the position change.  See the attached VI
(written for LV 8.5) as an example of this workaround.
1.-  I can´t use this because I must minimize the application.
2.- I tried to use this one, but I didn´t find the control`s position to compensate the change.
I solve this trouble using a 3 way:
1.- I ask for FP. State.
    2.- If FP.State = minimized, I set FP.Transparency = 100 and FP.state = maximized.
3.- I get the image using FP.get image method, and save it.
    4.- Return FP.TRansparency to 0 and FP.state to minimized
for the publishing I didn´t use WTP, I wrote a html file (attached as a .txt file) that load the image created every 20seconds

  • I am having trouble with sleep mode for my macbook pro

My Macbook pro 13" is getting old, about late 2009.
    Sorry if language confusing you.
Ok, Normally when you are turn your screen down osx will automatically get into sleep mode and when you open the screen it will be back as usual.
Lately since 2-3 months ago til now I am having problem with that, when I am turn my screen down everything is fine I mean no horrible noise or anything that warn you like this mac is having problem and turn to sleep mode as usual BUT when I am turn it back on my monitor screen is blank, black screen for awhile I mean not less than 5 minutes also no respond to anything then my mac will auto restart and show up the dialog "This mac has restarted because unexpected problem blah blah blah" something like that. Sometimes I can't wait that long so I hold down the turn off button then turn my mac on again.
Not everytime this problem show up just it seems this problem start show up more frequently.

Ok I got the answer from google, just resetting PRAM or something and now everything is fine.

  • Trouble with panning modes, volume levels the same on mixdown...

First of all, I don't think the explanation in the manual is comprehensive, I get what they're saying but it seems there's some quirks.  Maybe someone can help me sort this out.
Left/Right Cut  (logarithmic)  Vs. -3dB Center
    Stereo Panning Mode
Select Left/Right Cut  (logarithmic) to pan left by reducing the volume of the right channel, and pan right by reducing the left channel volume. The channel being panned to doesn’t increase in volume as panning gets closer to 100%. Or select Equal‑Power Sinusoidal to pan left and right channels with equal power, so that a hard pan left has the same loudness as both channels together.
^I understand that, however, I have some questions and it could also be a setting issue on my end or a software malfunction.
Previously when mixing, Switching between these modes under preferences>multitrack before mixdown used to make one mixdown louder/softer then the other, this no longer occurs, the mixdown volume is the same even if I switch modes then make a new selection and re-select the clips for mixdown. It is supposed change the volume of the mixdown, correct?  Or am I wrong?
Secondly, under "advanced session properties" the settings: Left/Right Cut  (logarithmic)  Vs. -3dB Center  seem to have the opposite effect as with the mixdown settings, in "advanced session properties" the -3dB settings makes the session have less amplitude.
Where as, before the mixdown setting stopped working, I do believe that -3dB made the mixdown louder and the Left/Right Cut Logarithmic made it less loud, is this right?
Maybe I'm just confused, anytype of clarification would be greatly appreciated as I don't feel the manual is that clear on this issue.

I think that most of your confusion is probably caused by not restarting Audition (yes, the whole thing) after you've changed the setting each time - if you don't do this, it gets very confusing, and doesn't work.
If you want to see exactly what's happening in each case, then the best way to do it is to record some -3dB tone, and pan that in both modes. It's then very clear...

  • Trouble with recovery mode.

    I have a similar problem to Apom12...
I unplugged my phone in the middle of an update, and it was fine until I plugged it back in. Now, when I push the sleep button, the only thing the phone will do is show a plug with an arrow pointing up to an itunes icon. It wont make/receive calls or show the home screen or anything. When I plugged it into my computer,a message box popped up that said, 'Windows needs to install driver software for your Apple Mobile Device (Recovery Mode)'. Since I didn't have a cd that had the software on it...I looked on the internet for it and could find nothing.
So, the next day I took my phone and my computer to the AT&T store, and since they don't know what they're doing, they had me call the apple helpline. The person I talked to told me to uninstall itunes, and she took me step by step through the process. She told me also that I needed to re-activate my iphone...However, there wasn't internet in the AT&T store, so I had to hang up with her before I could complete the re-installation of itunes.
I just now re-installed itunes, and it works fine, but when I plug my phone into my computer, it still has the same icon with the itunes and the plug. However, the message to install software has changed...it now says, 'Windows needs to install driver software for your Apple Recover (iBoot) USB Driver'
So, I've read several different forums about the recovery mode and how I can get the phone out of it, but pushing the buttons and holding them hasn't helped. The phone is pretty much frozen. I don't know what this (iBoot) business is all about, but apparently, if I plug my phone into a Mac computer then it will be easier to restore it? I don't know anyone with a Mac computer, and it looks like I'll have to drive two hours to get to an Apple store.
Can anyone help me locate the correct software (iBoot) to get my phone working again, or at least give some advice on what I could do next to try and fix my phone?

Hello, Sorry to see your having this issue today.
One bit of advice I would like to offer really quick is. We do not want to disconnect iPhone while it is in the middle of updating. You want to allow it to finish till it says iPhone Activated on the screen and iTunes has stopped informing you of the updated progress. You even want to keep it plugged in when it says iPhone is rebooting.
Now as far as the iBoot software goes. This is typically a special state the iPhone goes into and installed Recovery Mode Drivers. Once the Drivers are installed properly, If you launch iTunes it should say "iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode and needs to restore" At this point you will press the Restore button in iTunes, And agree to any Prompts and sit back and wait till it is finished.
You may get a screen in iTunes that later pops up saying "Setup as New iPhone or Restore from backup" Choose Restore from backup and again sit back and wait and it will soon restore iPhone to that backup file.
Depending on the machine the entire process could take 10 to 20 min. If you have any concerns about the process as if it is finished or questions about the messages feel free to call 1-800-My-iPhone and they will be happy to assist you with the process.
And yes your more then welcome to restore on another PC or even a Mac.
Let us know how this goes for you. Post back if needed

  • Trouble with Laptop-Mode-Tools, AC Plug-In

I can't get Laptop-Mode-Tools to recognize when I plug my AC in, I have options for "AC_" as it says are allowed in the man page and ArchWiki, although there are no examples of just having the prefix "AC_".
However, it says it should behave in the same way as "BATT_" does, independant of the laptop-mode status.
I have LM enabled for AC in laptop-mode.conf, and acpi_listen has output for the AC in/out.   My current workaround is to have it as it is, with "LM_AC_*", but having entries for exclusively battery and AC is easier for me as I plan to always keep Laptop-Mode-Tools enabled.
Is there something I misconfigured, or may I have misunderstood the manual/wiki?
Alternatively, how would I go about debugging? I noticed there was a variable enabling debugging, but I couldn't find where the debugging output occurs.  I am a little new with regards to standard debugging practice.

I'm terribly sorry, I fixed everything I had made bold.  I was trying to make the technical things stand out for people that were just glancing at the post. But you're absolutely right, I should have used more discretion.
As for the configuration, I did not expect it to magically do what I want.  I will provide a more concrete example of what I am talking about, if it helps.
    In /etc/laptop-mode/conf.d/lcd-brightness.conf, I have BATT_BRIGHTNESS_COMMAND="echo 0".  This works: when I unplug AC, 0 gets output to /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness.
However, when I attempt AC_BRIGHTNESS_COMMAND="echo 15" (less than /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/max_brightness, hopefully demonstrating my reading of laptop-mode.conf), it is unsuccessful.  Instead, I currently use LM_AC_BRIGHTNESS_COMMAND="echo 15" as a workaround.  BATT_BRIGHTNESS_COMMAND works without editing /etc/acpid/handler.sh, I was simply wondering why the AC counterpart does not.
I hope I have now supplied enough information now allows us to be on the same page, and I apologize again for the offensive formatting.

  • Trouble with Disk Utility, Erase Free Space

    Hello,
I have (had) a 120GB HD w/ about 53GB free. I had trashed some large files and thought I'd try the "Erase free space" option in Disk Utility.
I ran it per the help file: seleced Macintosh HD, Erase Free Space, using the "Zero Out Deleted Files" option. It got started, created a temp file, then told me it would take about 31 minutes. As it neared completion, I was presented w/ a Dialog: Out of Free space - or smthg to that effect.
Per the help file, which said I might be presented w/ such a warning but that I could ignore it, I clicked "OK".
Then the computer chugged along for another hour or so, never finishing. Finally I clicked the "Skip" button, and it chugged along for another 30 min. or so, never making any progress in "skippin" in the status bar. I finally just quit Disk Utility.
Now I'm showing a completely full HD. I've restared, but the same thing. I've tried to run Erase Free Space again, but it gives an error "Could not create temp file" - I'm assuming b/c it needs free space to do the task, and it thinks there is none. So...
...How do I get my free space back?
    Thanks in advance...

There's probably a huge temp file somewhere, maybe in a folder in your Trash. Do a search for a huge (multi-GB?) file (it might be an image file) that looks suspicious.
The only reason to use erase is for security purposes, and doesn't do anything in the normal course of computer usage. Erase actually writes data to your remaining file space (as you have discovered with no space left) and then trashes that data (or not, in your case).
P.S. In future you should post this kind of topic as a question so people will know it is something that needs answering rather than being a comment.

It's been a month since I ran Disk Utility - it was fine then. Yesterday and today I ran it again and it doesn't make any permission changes.

  • Trouble with Protected Mode whitelisting and file links

    Our system details first: Adobe Reader 11.0.7, Windows 7 SP1 32bit, IE9
We have some documents that contain URLs (file://...) which point to other documents (mostly PDF and DOCX files) on the local harddrive or on remote network shares. Those links work perfectly fine when Protected Mode is turned off - you click on it, IE opens and displays the document (PDF) or prompts you to open/download it (DOCX). As soon as you turn on Protected Mode those links stop working completely and I can see an access denied entry in the AdbeReaderBroker.log. All as expected.
Where it get's weird is that the links still don't work even if I whitelist nearly everything. I can click on them and nothing happens, they don't even generate an entry in the broker logfile anymore. Just so you have an idea, here is my current whitelist used for testing:
    FILES_ALLOW_ANY = \??\C:\*
    PROCESS_ALL_EXEC = \??\C:\*
    REG_ALLOW_ANY = HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Adobe*
    REG_ALLOW_ANY = HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Adobe*
    REG_ALLOW_ANY = HKEY_CURRENT_USER\*
And here's everything contained in the broker logfile (including when I click on links):
[07:07/15:29:57] Adobe Reader Protected Mode Logging Initiated
    [07:07/15:29:57] Found custom policy file: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 11.0\Reader\ProtectedModeWhitelistConfig.txt
    [07:07/15:29:57] Adding custom policy: FILES_ALLOW_ANY = \??\C:\*
    [07:07/15:29:57] Adding custom policy: PROCESS_ALL_EXEC = \??\C:\*
    [07:07/15:29:57] Adding custom policy: REG_ALLOW_ANY = HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Adobe*
    [07:07/15:29:57] Adding custom policy: REG_ALLOW_ANY = HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Adobe*
    [07:07/15:29:57] Adding custom policy: REG_ALLOW_ANY = HKEY_CURRENT_USER\*
So the policies get applied, Protected Mode isn't blocking anything anymore, the links still don't work and now I'm out of ideas. I also tried all of this with the Trust Manager setting "Allow opening of non-PDF file attachments with external applications" turned on, same situation.
I hope someone here can point me in the right direction, maybe I'm missing something completely obvious here.
Edit for people having the same issue:
After some further testing it became clear that the issue only occurs when the PDF containing the hyperlinks is created using the built in PDF generator of Word 2010. PDFs generated with Adobe Acrobat Professional work just fine and can also open the applications directly without opening IE first. I'm not sure about the exact difference in the generated link, Word seems to generate file:// URLs which I can access with right click -> Copy Link Location, something that's not possible for the links generated by Acrobat.

Maybe the information http://samwel.tk/laptop_mode/faq might help.  Particularly #3 and onward.
    I only use powerdown. Thread = https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=134109

  • Trouble with Sleep Mode

My ipod nano is currenty not turning off. After I've charged it and its disconnected from the computer it'll remain on, and when I try to turn it off (either by pushing and holding the play button, or by clicking on the sleep button on the menu), it still won't turn off. It also won't turn off after a couple of minutes on hold or not on hold, and will remain on until the batteries are dead.
    Any insight?

Have you tried Resetting and or Restoring this iPod?
Your message about firewire may be occurring due to a damaged pin on your dock connector or a bad cable. If you can borrow another cable try that.
If none of these steps work you can send your ipod in for service here:

If you buy the Applecare Protection Plan you will extend phone support.
