Trouble with DVD+R DL discs in T500 Optical drive

Hi - This is a T500 (2242CTO)  running W7/64 - I've downloaded the latest Roxio Creator Business Edition and was able to burn a 4.5GB folder to a DVD+R DL disc using its Data Disc function, no problem.   After completing the burn, i closed Roxio and inserted the DVD into the drive to try and read the contents, and after the drive spun up, I briefly saw the [correct] disc label (in Windows Explorer), then the drive went into Powered Off state (device manager reports the drive has been "prepared for safe removal").   It won't power up either by ejecting the tray or by right-clicking and selecting "power on".  It won't even power up if I physically eject the drive and re-insert it.
Other formats, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R and DVD-RW seem to work fine.
I have to re-boot the machine to get the drive back, and while rebooting in this state, W7 hangs in the shutdown process and I have to force a shutdown with the power button (I've had no shutdown hangs otherwise).
Btw, the drive is a mat**bleep**a dvd-ram UJ862A, firmware revision SB04.   I'm actively searching for info about this drive and firmware, in the meantime if anyone has any insights they would be more than welcome.   Thanks!
(PS:  I tried to put "Mat**bleep**a" in the "Tags" field of this message and got an error about the word "s**t" being not permitted in this community!!)

Yes, the forum's smut filter can be a little too agressive at times!  ;-)

  • Trouble with DVD-R recovery discs

Hello, It's only now that I saw that DVD+R is suggested for burning the recovery disc set. A bit too late for me, since I bought several DVD-R to produce my set. Here's what happened: Each disc was created with difficulty; the burning process failed on every other try. But in the end, I finally got the 4 DVD-R's that the program said were burned and verified correctly. Now, when I tried inserting each disc to make sure the notebook was able to read them correctly (the contents were supposedly verified, after all), to my horror I saw that the first two discs were not being recognized. However, my patience was rewarded when after a long time, suddenly an Explorer window pops up showing the contents of the disc. Taking advantage of the situation, I immediately copied these contents in a folder in the desktop. It took me long to do this process for the contents of the first two discs that were having trouble being recognized. Later on I also copied the contents of discs 3 and 4, which was a lot quicker. Now, I have four folders in the desktop with the contents of the corresponding recovery discs. The question is: could I use these contents and burn them onto DVD+R's this time, so as to have a working set of recovery discs? Thank you very much.

    Hi @anthony_s
    Thank you for your query.
I understand that you created your recovery disk on the incorrect type of DVD and the do not work.  You have copied the contents to folders on you desktop and would like to know if you can now create new recovery DVDs on the correct type from the folders.
No that will not work.  I suggest you contact HP support and advise them of the events and inquire about obtaining a recovery kit.

  • I need to install osx I have the snow leopard disc but my optical drive doesn't work.

I made the rushed decision to completely scrub my Mac and reinstall the software again. I bought the computer about 4 years ago from a student at my university who was leaving. When I got it lion was installed already. Now I can use the install disc as my optical drive is broken and I can't recover from the internet as it wants the apple I'd from the original person. I can't find an uncorrupted file to USB boot my machine . has anyone got any ideas before I bite the bullet and get my CD drive repaired .

Purchase an external CD/DVD optical drive.
There are cheap ones (under$50) that'll last anywhere from a year to three years or more expensive(over $50 and higher) that will last much longer.
Not all optical drives are Mac compatible.
Most Mac compatible drives you will only find to be purchased online.
Here are two on Amazon.com that are cheap and Mac compatible

  • Audio Probelms with some DVDS/BLU-RAY discs when using optical out to Audigy 2

I have my PS3 connected to my Audigy 2 ZS soundcard via optical?cable to play 5. sound on my PC sound system (Klipsch Promedia Ultra 5.). I have finally successfully played discrete 5. sound with some DVDs. I have changed my optical out setting to bitstream in the DVD/BD menu (XMB) and selected optical with everything checked in (XMB). So far, The Matrix, The Matrix Reloaded and Minority Report have worked in proper 5. (not stereo matrixing). Both Dolby Digital and DTS tracks (I know it works because it sounds twice as good as Dolby?Digital) ?work in Minority Report. The problem is... Jurassic Park (DTS) and my Blu-ray MIssion Impossible 3 have no audio (probably more too). The STRANGE part is if I fastfoward both films by .5x (so that audio plays in FF) I can hear audio. When FF by .5x the display signal on the top of the screen changes from DTS or DOLBY DIGITAL: Multi Channel to DTS or DOLBY DIGITAL: 5..
What is with that? Also I still do not get audio in any games, Resistance (Blu-ray)?or any game demo but I do get the audio from the game display screen (XMB). Please if anyone has?any?useful advise or information it would be greatly appreciated.

  • MacBook Pro attempts to place a NON-EXISTING disc into its optical drive several times, immediately after being opened & woken up, every time...

About a week ago, my mother tried to place a DVD into my MacBook Pro while it was still closed & sleeping. Of course it didn't anything, but allowed her ignorant self to push the disc quite far into the disc drive. Once opened & woken up, the disc drive responded & operated normally, allowing my family to enjoy another great episode of Hanks & Speilberg's Band Of Brothers... UNTIL, the following day I opened it up & it began to make that "sucking a disc into its slot" noise, quite a few times before quitting... It hasn't damaged my MacBook Pro to my knowledge, I even put the DVD back in to insure that the drive hadn't been broken, but continues this process EVERY SINGLE TIME I try to open up & utilize my top-of-the-line Apple product. I've tried to restart/shut down my notebook, but this hindrance proceeds to linger. Also, I've began to worry that the amount of times the optical disc drive performs this mechincal process could cause future damage. Furthermore, it's a bit of a nuisance when trying to stealthly get on my MacBook Pro at night and end up waking up everyone... I have also upgraded to OX X Mavericks 10.9.1, could partake in the problem at hand? I would greatly appreciate suggestions & hope someone knows the direct solution to this problem!
Thank you for your time Apple Support Community, I truly appreciate it...

Damage was done when your computer fell.  Your warranty if you have one and Apple Care do not cover accidental damage.  Your only alternative is to take the computer to an Apple store or an AASP.  Whichever is more convenient for you.
NOTE:  If you are out of warranty and purchased the computer with a credit card, discuss the warranty issue with the credit card company which you purchased the computer with.   They are the only ones who can at this point cover the computer after it goes out of warranty with the manufacturer (Apple).
If you have Homeowners insurance, place a claim with them.

  • Mac mini dead, system disc stuck in optical drive

    My mini has died:
less than two years old, light comes on but there's no chime and no sound of the optical drive engaging or self-testing or whatever it is usually doing at boot-up.
I have tried everything I know of:
    • re-setting PMU
    • re-seating the ram
    • replacing the hard drive
    • using a different mini power supply
    • swearing at it
If I remove the ram and power on it hoots so it can at least tell if ram is present....
At first it chimed/light on but (intermittently) nothing more would happen - no sound from optical drive. When it did boot (1 in 3 attempts approximately) it would run without any malfunctions and diagnosis software couldn't find anything wrong.
Progressively less successful start-ups, then start-ups without chime, now nothing.
The techies I have spoken to all say "logic" board is "highly illogical".
Last time it started I put in the OS Install/Hardware Test dvd to run the next time it would boot but its dead now.
Is there any way to manually eject a disc like with the paperclip hole in the larger style of drive?
I have the mini's case removed but I can't see one...
I'm very disappointed, all my previous macs have kept working for five years or more!

I've been using macs for more than 16 years, I've taken many apart to replace RAM, processors, PCI cards and hard disks. I'd like to think I know what I'm doing...
The problems predate my opening the mini up.
Today it booted up long enough to run the Hardware Test!
    (still no chime)
    No problems found!!
It restarted again, enabling me to install the OS on the re-formatted hard disk!!!
After that, I restarted (no option to eject the DVD disc) and it's dead again!!!!
Here in Australia I think "service" just means replacing the motherboard, which is more than the thing is worth...

  • Long boot time when there's a disc in the optical drive

Windows 7 waits for the DVD-ROM drive to spin the disc when I have a CD in the Optical Drive.
This causes Windows 7 to take much longer to boot when I have a CD in the drive, because it takes about 10 seconds until the DVD drive starts to spin the CD.
Is there a way to make Windows 7 not spin up the dvdrom drive on boot?
    Thanks

  • Cannot load any Disc into my optic drive.

Need some help about my optic drive.I cannot load any CD or DVD into the slot.It seems like something was inside the optic drive. Can only load in a few mm of the disc inside the slot.Anyone please help.

The Optical drives in these computers include a sheet metal "shell". In some cases, handling by holding the Mac in one hand near the DVD slot can cause a bned in the top plate, so that the drive top plate blocks the DVD-entry slot. This can preclude inserting a DVD into the slot.
In the US, the solution is to make an appointment at the genius bar for a FREE evaluation and drive-straightening session.
In other parts of the world this may not be free, and/or you may choose to do this yourself.

  • Disc stuck in optical drive.

My problem is pretty lame. A friend of mine gave me this mini-cd-thingy asking me to check the content of it on my macbook, but once I inserted it I realized that it probably is too small to even be noticed by my optical drive, and so it was, and so it's stuck inside there now.
How on earth am I going to get it out? I tried ejecting, poking and shaking it out, but nothing works. Gezez, how stupid.

This is why your user manual says not to insert any nonstandard-sized discs into the drive.
You might have some success by inserting a thin, flexible plastic card or postcard-weight piece of paper into the drive slot and using it to try to guide the disc to the slot while someone else holds the machine up on edge for you. If not, then having a technician remove the drive, take the cover off it and extract the disc is going to be all you can do. Your warranty won't cover that, nor any damage you or the disc may have done to the drive by then.
Note: It's probably not a good idea to use the machine while the disc remains inside, since starting up, waking, and perhaps other actions cause the drive to spin up and move mechanical parts around. If the disc gets wedged in the wrong place and that happens, you could have worse problems.

  • Big Mini Trouble with DVD and Front Row

    Set-Up
I am trying to use my mac mini as a media centre connected to a 42" sharp aquos 1080HD, for sound i use a 5.1 bose speaker set-up, which is irrelevant to my problem, but the mac interfaces with a yamaha rxv661B 7.1 channel digital home theatre receiver, via DVI to HDMI and sound through head phone to RCA set-up that will soon be upgraded to optical. All connected to the appropriate DVD channels on the recevier, video goes to the TV via HDMI. My set-up has no DVD player other than the super drive on the mac mini, the only other input is a Bell ExpressVu 9200 PVR.
    My Problem
    1. Playing DVDs the brightness on the picture fluctuates in a very regular wave like pulse. What am I doing wrong?
    2. Front Row Crashes the computer whenever I try to access any of the movie files. The files play fine when accessed directly or through itunes but crash the system in front row. DVDs play, and the online movie clips play, and music and picture content are no problem.
Any help would be much appreciated
As an aside does anyone know if youtube will be available to non Apple-TV front row users, as well?
    Mini 1.83   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   12" Powerbook G4

Everything is plugged into a three pronged plug using a relatively sophisticated surge protecting power bar, but you may be on to something, the power bar has a light to indicate if it is properly grounded and that has not lit up since its been in use, perhaps the outlet isn't properly grounded, I live in a recently renovated 100yr old home.
As for the files they are a mixture of mpg, mov and a number of m4v (that might be my postal not a file format) I mean the ipod format, a lot of the video files I produce I put directly into the ipod ready format.

  • Trouble with DVD Studio Pro

I have a project in which I have two seperate clips from final cut pro i am trying to burn to DVD. One is the movie the other is the slide show. I created a project and placed both in. I set up a menu and two buttons one for each clip. I then linked them. In the preview window my buttons work fine, but once I burn it to DVD and put it in a dvd player I cannot get the remote to reconginze the buttons. Any suggestions will help me so much I really appreciate it.

DVDSP is actually very easy to use at the basic level, but it's not a "one touch" system and trying to treat it as such is the source of all kinds if problems. I strongly suggest that you go through the DVDSP user manual to get familiar with how the basics work.
The problem of buttons not highlighting is a common one but simple to fix in the inspector once you understand buttons. This is only slightly harder than chewing gum while walking...
If you're interested, Ripple Training has a nice tutorial on DVDSP that is both thorough and easy to understand. I need to state that although I have no financial interest in that product, I did work with Ripple on the project in the motion graphics and editing so I am biased.
    Good luck!

  • Having trouble with DVD Video files. Please Help! :)

Hi I recently got a film DVD I wanted to take a clip off. However although I can watch the section I want in Windows Media Player, when I import the film into Premiere - some of it is missing! there are 4 files '4-1',4-2','4-3',4-4' which make up the movie. I can load them all in but 4-3 is missing the last 15-20 minutes, even though I know its there - cos this file is the same size as the previous one which is full length. Does anyone know why this would be? The DVD is unencrypted.
Please help - its quite annoying that the small section of film I want is the bit that won't appear! Thank you very much
    Rich

    Based on this one line:
    The DVD is unencrypted.
I was assuming that it was not protected. However, as you point out, some aspects might be, and the OP might not be completely aware of this.
If there is protection, I strongly urge anyone to respect that, regardless of their intended use of the material. Copy protection is there for a very good reason. Regardless of what one might be able to do, they should be 100% ethical, and honor any/all copy protection. This is true for material from a videographer, or from a commercial studio. Should you need to use the material in such a DVD-Video, you should contact the author to get first permission, and then the original source material, that has not undergone the MPEG-2 compression to DVD-Video.
Again, I assume that the OP knows that this is NOT an issue, and will not figure into the problem. In that case, all above does NOT apply in this case, but some other reader might make note of it.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Trouble with installing 10.5 from an external firewire drive

I have a family pack of 10.5 and installed it just fine on my macbook. But, I'm having trouble getting my imac DVD player to read the DVD. It just spins and spits it out, and spins and spits it out. The imac is not covered under applecare so spending money to get the DVD drive fixed (which I barely use) is not something I want to do right now.
Anyway, I followed instructions on a this website to install 10.5 from an external firewire drive. (http://iuseapple.com/blog/apple-how-to/advanced-os-x/2007/10/29/how-to-install-l eopard-from-external-firewire-hard-drive/)
But I get stuck and am not able to actually get my imac to boot from the installer. Basically, I am able to use disk utility to create a copy of the disk image on my macbook. That resulting file ends in ".cdr" and it mounts when I double click it.
And I partitioned my firewire hard drive without problems.
I think I'm messing up when it comes to doing the restore. If I try to drag the .dmg mounted file in to the "source" it doesn't work (is greyed out). If I try to drag the mounted .dmg there than it works, but I get an error when I click "restore" (something about scans and images not being found). I tried physically copying the .dmg file onto the partition, but then when I plugged the HD into my imac, I wasn't able to get the imac to boot from the installer.
What am I doing wrong? If someone could walk me through these last steps I'd appreciate it!

Okay I finally got around to creating the bootable disk image of 10.5 using Carbon Copy Cloner. Still my iMac is not booting from the firewire drive!
Here's a recap of everything I've tried. I'm at a complete loss now!
    - I partitioned the HD into 2 partitions-- a 10gig one for the 10.5 install, the then the rest for Time Machine. I make the partition in Disk Utility on my MacBook.
    - I've partitioned the drive a few times-- always partitioning it in APM format (b/c it needs to boot my non-intel iMac).
    - I've created the disk image using "restore" in disk utility. I've again tried this a few times.
    - I am able to boot my MacBook from the disk image I create! So I know the FW drive is able to be used to boot from!
    - Here's what I've tried in terms of getting the iMac to boot from the FW drive. It always just boots to my internal drive instead. Sometimes I briefly see a folder and question mark. I've tried all 3 FW ports. I've selected the install partition at start up in preferences. I've also held down the option key at start up (only my internal drive shows) and I've held down command-option-shift-delete and again I get the question mark and it boots to my internal drive.
    - And I installed Carbon Copy Cloner and made the disk image that way on my macbook. Still, I tried everything and the iMac is not able to boot from the firewire drive!
Since my DVD drive is broken, this is the only way for me to install 10.5! Help!

  • 12" won't read Cds, DVDs OK both internal and external optical drives WEIRD

    Very strange one.
    12" 1Ghz, 1.25gb RAM - Combo drive - 10.5.4; Great condition.
No CDs mount, Audio, CDR all dyes. No mounto at all.
DVDs mount and play fine, shop bought films data on DVD-/+R, all OK
The above is true for the internal Matshita combo drive and for two other external Lacie d2s
One Firewire and one USB both exhibit the same behaviour.
Finder Preferences are ticked to mount both DVD and CD.
Please solve this one, I am going slightly mad. It doesn't make sense to my mind
    Cheers all!

  • DVD/CD-RW drive won't read a DVD+R/DL disc

    Hi,
Has anybody had problems with reading a DVD+R/DL disc on a Macbook with a MATSHITACD-RW CW-8221 revision GA0J drive. A client sent me a Fuji 4X (manufactured by Ritek) DVD+R/DL disc with about 5.43G bytes of data.
I know the drive on my Macbook can only burn CDs, and that seems OK. It is supposed to be able to read any DVD format, though write any DVD format. Commercial DVDs and single layer DVDs seem to be OK, but the DL dvd just spits out after a few seconds. I get the same reaction in Windows vVsta on the Macbook, installed with Bootcamp.
The same DVD+R/DL disc reads just fine on an Acer 3680 notebook with a cheap CD-RW/DVD pop-out style drive. Nero's utility prrogram, on the Acer, says the DVD+R/DL is OK, but notes it is not finalized - which it isn't supposed to be - as the client is planning to add more data in another session. Based on what I've read on OSTA.org's web site, the +R format (unlike the -R format) should be transportable between disc readers without needing to be finalized.
I am glad I have an external hard disk drive to read the files on the Acer and move them to the Macbook.
Has anybody else run into this and/or found a flash update for the Macbook's optical drive?
    Bill

Have the same problem. I've spent last day to find the cause of this problem, but I still have no ideas how to make my MacBook C2D read DVD-R DL DVDs. I was trying to read blank Verbatim DVD-R DL 4x and Verbatim DVD-R 8x filled with data but both are still just spits out after 15-20 seconds. And during spinning the disc MacBook's optical drive emits a few beeps (very quiet but easy to hear).
