Trouble with Finder window

Hi,
My finder window suddenly stopped opening. Also noticed that my ABOUT MY COMPUTER doesn't open up as well. Any suggestions?
MacBook Pro Mac OSX, 10.7.5 4GB
Thanks

Hi dtsering,
Happy Holidays!  Have you tried restarting your computer to reset your Finder application?  If you did, and are still having an issue, then restart the computer in Safe Mode.  Then open Finder and the "About My Mac" menu from the Apple logo.  Restart your computer as normal and you should be back in business.
OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode? - Apple Support
http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262
What is "Safe Mode"?
Safe Mode (sometimes called Safe Boot) is a way to start up your Mac so that it performs certain checks, and prevents some software from automatically loading or opening.
Starting up in Safe Mode does several things:
It verifies your startup disk, and attempts to repair directory issues if needed.
Startup Items and Login Items are not opened during startup and login on OS X v10.4 or later.
Together, these changes can help resolve or isolate certain issues on your startup disk.
Starting up in Safe Mode
Follow these steps to start up into Safe Mode.
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup sound, press and hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be pressed as soon as possible after startup, but not before the startup sound.
Release the Shift key when you see the Apple logo appear on the screen.
After the Apple logo appears, it may take longer than usual to reach the login screen. This is because your computer is performing a directory check as part of Safe Mode.
To leave Safe Mode, restart your computer without pressing any keys during startup.
I hope this information helps ....

  • Trouble with finder / spotlight ever since i installed lion.

Lion seems to have caused trouble with finder / spotlight ever since it was installed. Finder is struggling even with basic tasks (moving files)? This occures even when to other programmes are running. I have checked the VM for mds in activity monitor and this is constantly running at around 670MB, which is what I think is affecting finder. Is there any quick fix?

Disconnect all wired peripherals except the drive in question. The drive should be connected to a built-in USB port, not a hub, and it should have an external power source. Make sure the USB cable is securely seated at both ends. Boot in safe mode.
Test. Same problem? Connect it to a different built-in USB port. Same problem now? Try a different USB cable. Still the same?
After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode.)
If you have the same problem with the drive in all the above tests, then test it with another Mac, if possible.

  • Trouble using Finder window to look at image/movie files

I know I'm doing something wrong...
I'm using the Finder to look at image and movie files
If the files sit in a folder that is a few layers deep, then it's really frustrating to look at
The space for the icons are all small
I have to maxmise just to look at properly
    It's super frustrating
    Am I doing something wrong?
    Thanks
    Omar

    Hey Omar,
I was able to find a couple of tips that should make your Finder experience better. First off, I'd check out the following article that goes over the different viewing options in Finder:
OS X Lion: Choose options for viewing items in Finder windows
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH3919
If you're having trouble seeing the details of the icon because they're too small, choose View > Show View Options, and then try adjusting the sliders for "icon size." You might also want to try using the Cover Flow view option. With it you can easily see live previews of images, documents and movies, and can thumb through them quickly.
I'd also look over the general Finder article that goes over some tips for usage:
    Mac Basics: The Finder

  • Having trouble with finder????

ok i have two accounts on this mac both have administrative rights, i use mine and i can get into the other so heres the problem i log in and everything is fine then sooner or later the finder just wigs out, buttons start to disappear like the back, forward, and action, in the left pane of the finder the icons like applications and Macintosh hd black out, and when you click on the finder or hdd it wont open and the Macintosh hd text blanks out I've tried to repair the disk and it did fix all the errors, but not the problem. Before i read that sometimes its just the account that has the problem so i deleted my old account and made a new one that still didn't help the problem. I've also looked in the console and every time i click on the finder icon it comes up with "Finder failed to load a resource -- the binary is corrupted" i dont know what the problem is please help
Power Mac G5 Quad   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

A message about corrupted binaries from the Finder would have me booting from the OS X Install disc to run Repair Disk on the boot HD (per Using Disk Utility and fsck), and if that didn't fix the issue, an Archive and Install. You'll need 5 GB or more free space on the HD to do an A&I.

  • Fighting with Finder Window sizes

Is there any way to set and keep the size of Finder Windows and the width of their columns? The windows keep coming up very small and the columns very narrow. I keep resizing them, but if they get closed I have to resize them all over again when I next open them. It's a terrific waste of time. Is there some way to set a default size for the Finder Windows and their columns?
    Thank you.

    Daniel
Yeah, that's a real pain in the * and the number of clicks/mouse movements necessary to find anyy file, every time, was giving me serious RSI (repetitive strain injury) problems, which was affecting my work. Especially on the small screen of my MacBook. I therefore reverted to the once-superb Mac OS9 hierarchical filing system, which requires NO mouse clicks, involves NO columns, facilitites lightning-fast back-and-forth movement, and speeds up my work. Thanks to Classic Menu, this earlier and much better navigation system was brought back. Anyone can install it and need never look at those pesky columns again ! Give it a try anyway.

Well...ok... two mouse clicks- but only two

  • Issues with Finder - window 'view type' not sticking, picture backgrounds

Since my upgrade from Snow Leopard, I've noticed a few minor problems with the Finder in Lion.
Can anyone confirm if these are known bugs in Lion?
    1. At random, certain folders will not remember their view type anymore. Some do, some don't. Logging in as root and changing them there has fixed some, but others keep reverting back to a "default". It happens at any point while I am using the system, even without logging out or restarting. I've changed folder view types and come back 10 minutes later and they've changed on me! I used to have this problem with Tiger and Leopard, but not Snow Leopard. Seems it's back with Lion 10.7.0.
    2. Under Snow Leopard I had various JPG and PNG photos used as backgrounds for various folders in icon view. Under Lion, almost all of these backgrounds now only occupy one small corner of the window. They are not being displayed at their full size. The fact that they worked in Snow Leopard indicates there are no problems with the photos themselves.
    3. Various problems with grid layout in icon view. Dragging an icon to it's proper position in the grid will often not "stick". i.e. I line it up perfectly with the grid yet the icon goes flying off half way across the screen to another position. The Finder seems a lot less forgiving than Snow Leopard in this regard.
Since everything was runing perfectly for me in Snow Leopard I assume these are bugs that will hopefully be ironed out in future system updates.

No problem to turn it on again when i remove the connection, but it pops up a window "windows has just recovered from serious error!"
I also have an iPod and iPad, but there is no problem with the connection with those two.

  • Trouble with Find my IPhone on my IPad

I am trying to set up Find My iPhone so that I can find each of my devices with any of the others.  I own a MacBook Pro, an iPad wifi 2nd gen, and an iPhone 4S.  On the iPhone, Find My iPhone can see and locate the iphone itself and the Mac.  My iPad does not show up on the list of devices.  On the iPad, Find My iPhone only sees the iPad itself.  Neither my iPhone nor my MacBook show up in the list of devices.  What is the point of finding a device that you are currently using an app on (therefore it is in your own lap)?  They are all connected to the same iCloud account, and I have shut them down and rebooted them with no change.  Any help would be greatly appreciated, since my paranoia is growing that I will lose something before I get this sorted out.  Thanks.

Thank you for responding! Ok, I'm starting to feel stupid here. The link sends me off to do the basics which I have already done.
Don't what you meanby to do the basics? It an iCloud website to locate, lock, send a message, etc to your devices when you sign in.
I have iCloud on and operating on all devices.  I have find my iphone installed on all devices.  They are not, however, all using the same Internet access.  Do I need to find them and introduce them to each other while they are all accessing the same Internet source?
Are they all using the same Apple ID in iCloud?
Find My iPhone is builtin on latest OSX and IOS, you only needs to turn it ON in Settings > iCloud > Find My iPhone : ON.  The Find My iPhone/iPad/Mac app on iPhone/iPad/Mac is for locating other devices. How can you use FMi to locate a device if that device is gone?

  • Trouble with Initial Windows 8 Restart on 2010 MBP

I just attempted to download 64-bit Windows 8 onto my 2010 MBP via Boot Camp. It is a legal version I got through my university; I downloaded the .iso file onto a flash drive through a Windows computer, and then burned it onto a blank DVD via Disk Utility on my Mac. I also downloaded the Windows Support Software onto a second flash drive. The installation completed and my computer restarted.
When it did, it showed a black screen with the 4-rectangle Windows 8 logo in the middle. It freezes there for ~10-15 minutes, and then shows me a blue screen titled "Recovery" and says the error code is 0xc00000e9. This process can be repeated by turning my computer off and then on again. I have tried removing all external devices (except the burned DVD disk, which I cannot figure out how to eject; the eject button does nothing), with no success. I also cannot switch back to Os X by holding the "option" button at the white screen; my computer automatically tries to load Windows regardless. Please let me know if you have any suggestions; aside from what I have just described, my computer has no discernible functionality.
    Specs:
    MBP 2010
Os X Mavericks (can't remember exactly which version and I can't open Os X to check)
Windows partition: 100 GB out of 500 GB

  • Troubles with reformating Windows iPod to Mac and data loss

I'm completely lost. I've tried searching the support section of Apple.com and I've tried searching these message boards but I haven't been able to figure out what exactly I'm doing wrong...
I have a horrible Dell computer running Windows XP Home... the machine is just full of problems and I have a 20GB HP iPod that was originally formated for the windows machine.
I bought a G5 iMac almost 4 months ago and try as I might I cannot format the iPod to hold any information from my Mac (it just reads the information from my Dell and will copy that to the Mac) and I even lost all of my non-purchased songs on my iPod the first time I tried to switch it.
Does anyone have any information that might help...? Thanks (and I'm sorry for posting what probably is an annoying question!)
