Trouble with firewire 800 on Macbook Pro

Ok guys, I've given this thing all I've got and more and i still cannot figure it out. I'm trying to connect a firewire interface for my drum mics to record on my macbook. I first bought a refurbrished interface and it would not sync up to my mac. I figured it was still broken and so i sent it back to the manufacturer. I now have a new interface and I'm dealing with the same problem, I've tried two other cables so i doubt that is the problem, and when I hook up the interface through MIDI it recognizes it so that i know the interface works, but i can't use it until i figure out this whole firewire issue. I've heard that SL has problems with the firewire, but i havent upgraded yet and I'm still running on good old OSX Leopard. As far as I can tell, this seems to be an issure with the actual firewire drive itself and I'm taking it to an apple specialist this afternoon. I'm just trying to get some last minute info on this problem before i accidently replace something that already works.
Any help on this issue is greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Information on the manufacturer's website is sparse. Although it lists 10.4 or above it doesn't actually list 10.5.x or higher and the computers listed are all older models and not intel based. That's the part that makes me wonder.
Everything plugged into the same strip is a good thing for troubleshooting–it means that most likely everything is on the same ground plane and eliminates that possibility from the equation.
If you haven't done so already try resetting the firewire bus per the five steps listed in this document: What to do if your computer won't recognize a FireWire or USB device
If all else fails you could take the interface and MBP in to see an Apple Genius. They may be able to sort it out for you, especially if the problem does end up being on the Mac side.
The fact that the manufacturer hasn't been back in touch is a tad worrisome.

  • What external drives work well with a late 2011 MacBook Pro?  I ask because I just found out the hard way that a Samsung EVO 840 does not.  Also should I avail myself of something that works with Thunderbolt or Firewire?

What external drives work well with a late 2011 MacBook Pro (I7, Lion OS) apart from my Kingston flash and USB drive, and the SD drives that I use in my cameras and recording devices?  I ask because I just found out the hard way that a Samsung EVO 840 does not.  Also, should I avail myself of something that works with the Thunderbolt or Firewire connections?  I'm looking to back up music and video files created and/or processed in Logic Pro and the Adobe Production Premium software suite (Premier Pro, After Effects, Audition, etc).

Hmm, not sure what problems you had installing this drive. The review here gives it good marks for Mac:
    http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Electronics-EVO-Series-2-5-Inch-MZ-7TE1T0BW/produc t-reviews/B00E3W16OU
There does seem to be a lot of prep to make it work:
"1. Preparation to install your new shiny SSD
1.a You will need a migration tool (I used the Sabrent kit USB 3.0 to Sata that was suggested in these review) see link http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DQJME7Y/ref=oh_details_o03_s01_i01?ie=UTF8&p sc=1
1.b You will need to download a trim enabler (mid 2012 macbooks only support native trim with apple brand ssd's) I recommend going to cindori.org and downloading trim enabler version 3.xx. You can do this step before or after the OS migration
1.c You cannot use the Samsung SSD migration software *don't worry Mac has its own imaging/migration utility*"
    Also in those reviews:
" Only down side when using this product in a Mac Mini is you will be required to download and install Trim Enabler so that your drive performs optimally on your Mac device. This is an Apple issue, not Samsung, but it is an extra step you will have to take after you install the hard drive, and any time you perform an OS upgrade." He rant's on.
Personally I only deal with OWC:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/SSD/OWC/
They are very knowledgable and if there's a problem they will gladly take back the item. (Never happened to me yet - 8 years and counting).
Just upgraded my 13" MBP 2011 to 120 GB for $79. Adobe CS 6 opens in 3 seconds! Awesome!
When I was in Chicago I had a pro photographer for a client. She wound up with 4 internal drives in her Pro, 4 external drives and an dual array locked in a steel vault in the basement. All from OWC. OK she was a bit paranoid. Great client though.
As far as value for price:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/MES3FH7500G/
    500 GB for $130.
However as far as reliability is concerned:
    http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2014/01/30/are-ssds-reliable/
    http://www.extremetech.com/computing/173887-ssd-stress-testing-finds-intel-might -be-the-only-reliable-drive-manufacturer
So sudden power loss is an issue with SSDs.
Personally I'd go with a moderate sized SSD internally and a conventional external for backup. An array would be the most reliable.

  • Can anyone help me with Bakcing up my MacBook Pro???

Can anyone help me with Bakcing up my MacBook Pro???

Assuming you're looking for recommendations rather than experiencing specific problems, I would advise the following:
Buy 2 external hard disks. You don't say what model of MBP you have, but I would suggest buying the fastest type of drive your MBP supports. So, instead of going for a cheap USB2 drive, I would consider FW800 or Thunderbolt if your MBP supports it. It might cost more but will be faster.
One of the drives needs to be only as big as your internal HD. (Technically, it only needs to be as big as the amount of data you want to back up but to be safe, get one that matches your HD size). This HD can be used for a Bootable Clone. I use SuperDuper from Shirt Pocket, and a Freecom 1GB FireWire 800 drive. You can try it out for free, but it's worth buying a licence because once it's licenced you can do 'smart backups' where it only needs to copy files that have changed. The free version will have to do an entire clone each time which takes longer.
The second drive you should use as a Time Machine backup. The bigger this is, the more backups you can keep, so the further back in time you can go.
The reason to have both is that they both do different things.
SuperDuper is great for doing a complete 'emergency' backup every so often (i.e. before you go away, or at the end of each week, whatever). This disk means that if your MBP is lost, stolen or the HD goes pop, you can recover pretty much the whole system immediately, because you can boot from that drive on any Intel Mac that supports your bus type and OS version. I do an SD clone every so often and keep it hidden, in case anything happens to my MBP.
Time Machine backups are NOT bootable. However, in an emergency you can do a clean install of your OS and then get everything back by migrating from your last TM backup. But the best and most common use of TM backups is simply 'turning back the clock', i.e. you deleted something you wished you hadn't, or even saved over a piece of work you didn't mean to, or installed some software that has caused problems. As long as there was a recent TM backup, you can just get the older version of that file, or revert your whole system. I carry my TM drive around with me in my laptop bag and have it sat there attached and backing up the whole time I'm working.
Well worth having both strategies in place.
As an aside, if you keep confidential files (client or personal) on your MBP and carry it around somewhere like London as I do, it's also worth considering using FileVault so if your lappy gets nicked you don't have to worry about them getting at all your info. And if you have a clone at home, in the worst instance, all you really have to worry about is just buying a new laptop and restoring it. Expensive, sure, but at least your data is safe.

  • HD with FireWire 800 Recommendation/Suggestion

I'm looking for an external hard drive with FireWire 800 connectivity (ideally a Quad) to use for my Time Machine backup with MacBook Pro. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Btw, here are a few that I've have seen recently:
    1. $199.00 -- WESTERN DIGITAL MY BOOK STUDIO EDITION 500GB EXTERNAL QUAD. link: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/522057-REG/WesternDigital_WDH1Q5000N_500_GB_MyBook.html
    2. $189.99 -- Iomega Professional 500GB 3.5" External Hard Drive - 7200, 8MB, FireWire 800, FireWire 400, USB 2.0. link: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=32893 33&CatId=2427
    3. $229.95 -- From FireWire Direct: 500GB/7200rpm 3.5" Ultra IVs 'QUAD' FireWire800, USBv2.0 & eSATA Professional External Hard Drive Subsystem. link: http://www.firewiredirect.com/product/581/

    I recommend the Rocstor 500GB or 750GB model 800AV...
    http://www.rocstor.com/Products/rocpro-800av.html
I love it because it has an internal power suppy (so it accepts a standard universal power cable). That's great if you ever forget your power cable at home! Easy to scrounge up a spare!
Also it comes with a great travel case. Plus it has FW 800, 400, and USB 2 ports.
This is good because if you have it hooked up on FW 800, on your MacBook Pro, you will need to connect other FW perhiperals into the drive's FW 400 port insteat of the MBP's 400 port since you can't use the 400 and 800 ports at the same time due to the bus maximum being 800 MBS.

  • Hi, I have problem with starting up my macbook pro, the gray screen coming and the circle still turning

    hi
Could u please help me with the problem that I have with starting up my macbook pro?

Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.

I have two problems with my 2012 13” MacBook Pro.
    Gray screen shows at startup
    Randomly disconnects from network.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

First, open Terminal in your Utilities folder and paste this into the prompt line:
    sudo update_dyld_shared_cache
Press RETURN. You will be prompted to enter your admin password which will not be echoed to the screen. Press RETURN again.
Next, boot the computer into Safe Mode.
    Next, do the following:
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

When you have kernel panics, the pertinent information is in the panic report.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent one. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.

I have a problem with Mail on my Macbook Pro. It is configurated with a gmail account, and now I can't access the mail. Is it possible to reboot the account or..? Please help:)

The question mark means the computer cannot find a bootable volumes so can;t do anything, That, combined with annoying sounds, strongly suggests a failed hard drive.
You can ask a "genius" at an Apple Rtail Store to test it but I'm pretty sure the drive is kaput. I'm hoping you had your data backed up.

  • How do I get my new 27" Thunderbolt Display to work with my mid-2010 Macbook Pro?

How do I get my new 27" Thunderbolt Display to work with my mid-2010 Macbook Pro? Or am I SOL?
    Hardware Overview:
      Model Name:    MacBook Pro
      Model Identifier:    MacBookPro6,1
      Processor Name:    Intel Core i7
      Processor Speed:    2.8 GHz
      Number of Processors:    1
      Total Number of Cores:    2
L2 Cache (per Core):    256 KB
      L3 Cache:    4 MB
      Memory:    8 GB
      Processor Interconnect Speed:    4.8 GT/s
      Boot ROM Version:    MBP61.0057.B0F
      SMC Version (system):    1.57f18

You can't. Theoretically, Thunderbolt devices that only transfer video and audio should work with Mini DisplayPort MacBooks like yours, but it's not the case of the Thunderbolt Display. Its firmware doesn't allow it to be used with non-Thunderbolt Macs, so you can't use the Thunderbolt Display with the Mid 2010 MacBook Pro.
Instead, you have to look for another screen, or you can get an adapter and connect the MacBook Pro to a TV

  • How to Force mac Thunderbolt External Display with Integrated GPU for Macbook Pro 2012?

I have been getting GPU Panic whenever I use external Thunderbolt Display.
Not sure whether this is software after(Mavericks) or hardware, if anybody could shed some light I would appreciate it.
The Current Discrete GPU will only work for few seconds 10 sec max before it became blank and require you to force shutdown. This also happened even without external display Blank and GPU Panic upon restart. So I suspected either the discrete GPU failure or software in Mavericks.
But at the moment I'm looking for workaround so I can use the intel intergrated GPU to use my Mac Thunderbolt External Display.
Thank you in advance for any input.

How can I sync the contacts in my phone with those on my MacBook Pro? I already have an iCloud account, and everything else (calendars, music, etc.I is already synched) but the contacts won't.

    Ok.
Open System Preferences, Apple Logo icon in the menu bar and then System Preferences or the Sys Pref iocon in the Dock and go to the Internet Accounts area and look at your iCloud account. It should list what is and isn't synced by a checkmark next to each item.
Also in the Contacts app click on Contacts in the menu bar and select Preferences then accounts and make sure your iCloud account is listed. You can also do that from the Internet Accounts area in System Preferences.

  • Is it possible to easily run Microsoft office 2010 with access on a MacBook pro or have I wasted my money ?

Okay , first off thanks for any help in advance . I just purchased a MacBook pro for my daughter for college . ( finance major ) . Her class requires Microsoft office 2010 with access .  As you probably already know , and I have just learned , that is no offered for Mac. Is there an easy way To run ms office with access on a MacBook pro or have I wasted my money ?

All that matters is file compatibility. The documents look the same. I've been a professor, so I don't see any issues here at all.
Another option you may want to consider is this: Run Windows on the Mac:
    Windows on Intel Macs
There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
         1. Install the Apple Boot Camp software.  Purchase Windows
XP w/Service Pak2, Vista, or Windows 7.  For Boot Camp
4.0 and above you can only use Windows 7 or later. Follow
instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on
installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and
installing Windows.  Boot Camp enables you to boot the
computer into OS X or Windows.
         2. Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business,
Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  Parallels is software
virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently
             with OS X.
         3. VM Fusion and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate,
or Windows 7.  VM Fusion is software virtualization that
enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
         4. CrossOver which enables running many Windows
applications without having to install Windows.  The
Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
         5. VirtualBox is an Open Source freeware virtual machine such
as VM Fusion and Parallels that was developed by Solaris.
It is not as fully developed for the Mac as Parallels and VM
             Fusion.
Note that VirtualBox, Parallels, and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc.  There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization.  The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system. See MacTech Labs- Virtualization Benchmarks, January 2013 | MacTech for comparisons of Boot Camp, Parallels, and VM Fusion. Boot Camp is only available with Leopard or Snow Leopard. Except for Crossover and a couple of similar alternatives like DarWine you must have a valid installer disc for Windows.
You must also have an internal optical drive for installing Windows. Windows cannot be installed from an external optical drive.

  • Time Machine backup problems with firewire 800 since Mavericks

Since I installed Mavericks about a week ago, I have had problems with TM not working with my LaCie external drive. At best, it would not back up when the mac was awakened from sleep mode and in use.  When I would open time machine preferences, I would see the "preparing for back up" prompt that would last forever. Not only was it doing that, I have found that it would freeze my mac. I figured this out when I was not able to get my mac to respond from the login screen. It was basically frozen and couldn't log on.  I noticed the back up drive light flickering but nothing would happen even with waiting a long time. I finally figured out that shutting off the TM EHD would unfreeze the mac and it would start functioning normal again. This was happening with my external HD daisy chained to another external drive that contains my iPhoto, iMovie and Itunes files. That drive was also connected to the mac using firewire 800. I tried many different configurations, switched the order the drives were daisy chained, tried different cables and even directly connected the TM drive with firewire 800 to the mac, but the problems still persisted. The strange thing is that when I connect the TM drive through USB, it works flawlesly and no hanging up of the computer. Thats what Ive been forced to do. I have my other EHD connected directly through firewire 800 and it works fine. I only have one firewire 800 port, and since it works fine with my other LaCie drive, it makes me think its not the port or macs hardware? I can only guess this is a Time Machine issue or something wrong with my TM drive?  I have been in contact with LaCie and given them all these details but I have not heard back yet on what they feel the problem is. I thought I would post this to see if anyone else had some experience with this problem.

Forgot to mention I did that. Completely erased and reformatted HD and then reconnected to TM. Didn't help. I did have the mac hang up while installing Mavericks and had to eventually shut off the external drive. It did that to me the firs time I tried to install Mavericks and I lost all my data because it did a clean install after that. I had another back up on CCC so I just restored from there. This time the update to Mavericks transferred my data. I have had TM hang up my mac in the past on occasion, but I was always able to shut down the drive and then the mac would return to normal. Perhaps I should try to erase and reformat again?

if your computer does not support the operating system you wish to install in bootcamp then you have to use a virtual machine like virtual box to install the operating system you wish to install
