Trouble with Gradient editor - Photoshop Mac

Hi,
I can't for the life of me figure out how to manipulate the gradient added to a layer (a rounded rectangle) in photoshop CS5.
I open the gradient editor and try to manipulate the gradient colors with the controls, but when I save, nothing changes with the gradient color.
What am I doing wrong?
Thanks.

Hi MTSTuner! Thanks for helping me with all of this!
Eliminating the color overlay did not work. I have CS5, so my blending options window looks like this:
So there is no gradient editor accessible in the blending options. And clicking on the preview does not do anything either. When I close the blending options, I go the gradient editor on the top of photoshop:
I then double click on the big dark rectangle in the above picture to access the gradient editor. Then when I try to manipulate the black squares with the white diamonds (below) in the gradient editor to get the right gradient, nothing happens when I press ok:
How should I go about this? THanks again for your help.... it is badly needed!

having trouble with the messages on mac my friends using it are coming not registered when i try to send them a message

That's probably because they're not registered.
Messages only works if your friend has an iphone.
There is a workaround that can work, though.
set up an AIM account online.
in System preferences > mail, contacts, and calendars, enter your new AIM account.
in Contacts, on your friend's contact card, look for AIM. Enter their phone number right before that, with a +1 before it, and the area code:  i.e., +11234567899.
This doesn't always work. Their cellular carrier has to cooperate with AIM. Some do, some don't. If it doesn't work, tell your friend to get an iPhone.

Hi I am having trouble with iMessage on the mac book pro, it doesnt sync with the ipad and iPhone, both the ipad and iPhone do but not on the mac book pro , has anyone any suggestions, thanks in advance

First, make sure that all your devices are using the same Apple ID in iMessages including your Mac.  Second, your messages that you've already started on your devices will not show up on your Mac - only ones that you start from now on will show up.  Third, if you're still not syncing accross all devices, make sure you read the directions on the first page of this thread.  It should work after performing those steps.  Good luck!

  • Aperture - Edit with External Editor - Photoshop

    Hi,
I recently made my first attempt via Aperture to "Edit with External Editor" and in my case I have the preferences set to export to Photoshop CS4 Extended. The External Editor File Format (in preferences) selected is TIFF and as advised by Apple's Help menu this is set at 16-bit. The External Editor Color Spaces is set to Adobe-RGB (1998).
I selected an image with some barrel distortion, hit the export button, and Aperture sent the new master to Photoshop. I did my fixing and saved. This automatically sends the updated file to Aperture. This is very handy and practical but I was shocked to see the size of the new and fixed file. The original file was a JPEG at 4MB and the new fixed file was a colossal 200+ MB file. I ended up throwing away the new file - too large.
I am just wondering if this is normal? This is my first time using the Edit with External Editor in Aperture and I am also quite clueless about using Photoshop efficiently and properly. Could I have done something differently and received the new and fixed file at a smaller size?
Thanks for your advice and help.

    This is normal.
TIFF files get rather large and the 200 MB sounds about right. If I send a 1.63 MB JPEG at the same settings in PS CS5, I get a 134 MB TIFF after applying the Lens Correction filter and saving.
If I send the same file as a TIFF 8-bit in Adobe-RGB (1998), I get back a 54.73 MB file.
You could therefore send as an 8-bit TIFF to reduce the size. Additionally, the PSD format tends to return a slightly smaller file size (51.xx MB in the case here).
A JPEG file is actually only an 8-bit file, so it isn't really necessary to go to 16-bit, but many users like to protect against further degradation of the JPEG when editing externally (especially from posterization where smooth gradients - such as a sky - start to break down into visible steps in the color transition).
I personally send as TIFF 8-bit in the sRGB color space and if the image shows degradation, then I might change to the TIFF 16-bit (or simply not use that image).

  • Trouble with Lion upgrade: 2009 Mac Mini not rebooting.

    Hi folks,
I'm having trouble with the Lion upgrade. My 2009 Mac Mini (running Snow Leopard) won't reboot. Everything looked fine, but it just went black after the gray and white Apple symbol screen on the restart and I can't get it to get past this. I should mention I'm using wireless keyboard and trackpad (both Apple) and a Philips HDTV via HDMI cable as monitor. Any thought? Looking forward to using Lion.
    Thanks,
    Chris.

Is anyone else having this problem (an infinite loop of "You need to restart your computer" messages)?
Any thoughts or suggestions? I don't know how I can fix the problem, since I can't properly boot into the OS. I tried holding down the shift button to boot into Safe mode, only to achieve the same results.
Any help would be much appreciated. I'm really looking forward to using Lion.
    Thanks,
    Chris

  • Trouble with Report Editor

I'm trying to create a simple report using a small real estate table with column names like City, OwnerName, AskingPrice, SalePrice, SquareFeet, BedRooms, etc.
At the bottom of the report, I want averages beneath the numeric fields.
When I "Run Paper Layout", the averages are all over the place and I can't move them into their correct positions in the Report Editor.
Is there some secret to working with the Report Editor?
    It seems prohibitively awkward.
    What am I missing?
    Thank you one and all.

    Hi Valentine,
I agree that the Layout Editor is a bit daunting for a newbie.
As your report is a simple tabular report, let me give you a brief explanation.....
Your columns (City, OwnerName, AskingPrice, etc) are being outputted into Field containers (F_City, F_OwnerName, etc).
All these fields are enclosed in a Frame (called a repeating frame) - meaning that they 'belong' or sit inside this repeating frame. Visually, the fields and the repeating frame are 'tightly' placed together. This frame will repeatedly output as many rows of data as your SQL will return.
In turn, this repeating frame 'belongs' to a group frame. The repeating frame and the group frame are also 'tightly' placed together.
If you have totals (sum, Averages, etc), these fields are outside of the group frame as described above. They are probably placed on another outer group frame.
By expanding the Layout model in the Object Navigator will give a better idea of what I am attempting to explain.
As they are objects residing within objects, an object cannot be easily moved outside its repeating frame or group frame. They are 'locked' in the frame for a good reason.
To be able to move a field object, there must be room for the object to be moved to. Therefore, the most outer group frame has to be expanded first (select and drag). Repeat this process with the other frames, etc.
Note that there is a Icon called 'Select Parent Frame' to help you to select the outer (Parent) frame.
Once you have the frames 'enlarged', you can move the fields around the frame. It is quite simple once you get the hang of it.
Of course, there are are many other complexities with the Editor, but that is another story.
    Good Luck.
    John

  • Tinting shadows with Gradient Editor

I recently saw a presentation that spoke of tinting shadows on an image by converting to black and white, then
creating a gradient map layer.  From there you went into the Gradient Editor and place the cursor directly beneath
the gray scale, and starting from the black end, move it toward the white end until the arrow cursor changes to a
finger pointer.  You then use the value in Location...
Unfortunately, every time I do this my cursor is ALWAYS a pointing finger.  I can put in color stops, but I don't
believe that was what the technique used...  I've tried using alt, ctrl, and/or shift in all the combinations I can
think of, but no matter what I do, I always get the pointing finger instead of the arrow cursor.
Does anyone know what I need to do differently to get the Gradient Editor to show an arrow cursor until I reach
whatever point I should be at when it changes to a pointing finger?  And what IS that point?  Does it represent
the darkest black in the image, or what?

OK, (hopefully), here's a screen shot of the Gradient Editor.  I'd put an arrow on there, but I can't find an arrow brush, so where I put the cursor is a red butterfly right below the gradient...
When I saw the technique shown, the cursor there was an regular curso, and as you move the cursor toward the white point, at SOME point, it's supposed to change to a pointing finger.
    As I said, mine doesn't...

  • Trouble with Sapphire HD 7850 mac edition graphics card

So i've recently decided to updagre the graphics card from a HD 5870 to the HD 7850 mac edition.
It has a toggle switch for different firmware requirements of different OS's. It works great when I have it in "Mac OS X/Windows (non-UEFI compliant)" or "Windows (UEFI compliant)" as long as i'm booting into Mac OS X. With the former option i can hold down option to get a boot screen whereas with the latter the monitor becomes active as soon as you're logged in - as expected.
However as soon as i go to boot into windows by selecting my bootcamp drive from the boot menu (switch in position 1 on GPU)  it goes to a nice BSOD and i have to force restart my computer. Does anybody understand why this card won;t allow me to boot into windows like my HD 5870 did in this manner?
Secondly, i figured I would try to bypass the boot screen by throwing the GPU switch to position 2 ("Windows (UEFI compliant)") and then go into system preferences and select the windows volume to startup in. However ever since i installed windows i haven't been able to boot in this manner...when it restarts i get an error saying that there is "no bootable device" which makes no f****** sense because i can boot into my windows drive just fine by selecting it from the boot menu.
I feel like since i had to install windows by bypassing bootcamp assistant (directly booting from usb and installing to a clean separate internal SSD) that I might have screwd up the association between the startup disk selector and the target disk...i'm so exhausted of dealing with windows and my mac with RAID drives...so many problems, so complicated.
Any help with the graphics card stuff would be much appreciated.

Dear Paul S, John B here. I have a 2008 Mac Pro, single Quad Core-not state of the art  at all. I bought my sapphire radeon HD 7950 to replace an nVidia 8800, so that I could play Bio shock infinite on Steam. Yes, I installed it myself, it's a piece of cake.  I had no issues after installing. Some have...might have been that gpu switch on the side was defective, but not for me. to the right for mac, left for PC, as far as I know.  As for the hype, can't say.  It does the job quite well.  I now have a Mac that can use Display Port and HDMI for output rather than DVI (very handy for buying monitors- you can use a small LCD tv as one). I guess it was worth the price, to me it was, anyway.  I learned my lesson on older graphics cards: when they go, try to not have a fit, and see if you can replace them with something a bit better, and don't take your Mac in to your local Fruit PC store, cuz they don't have a clue about such things, and the Fruit PC company's policy is to replace like with like-period.  You can ask them to, but they won't put a better video card into your Mac Pro, even though you are willing to pay the difference to upgrade. Also, you are on their turf, so you will be paying their prices for that old video card. $360 for an 8800GT mac version? I don't think so, at least not again ! Freak out with Bootcamp? I don't think so.  I've never used it with bootcamp, but I did mention the switch, so I think you're covered there.  Maybe you'd have to download and install Windows drivers for that card but that's be about it.  You might try MacVidCards.com
but that's a crapshoot, as PC cards flashed to work with Mac may be.
    just my 2 cents

  • Trouble with brushes in photoshop elements 7.0

My photoshop elements 7.0 worked perfectly fine until about a week ago, when all of my brushes (plug-ins and defaults) started acting strange. The image below shows what it looks like.
I'm working with only one layer here (the background), using the same hard "brush" from the defaults for both the erasor and the brush (the erasor is working normally and that's why i'm using it to compare with the brushstroke). There shouldn't be a difference between the stroke with the brush and the erasor, and there wouldn't have been a difference if i did this a week ago, but still, as you can see, something is not right here... It hasn't got anything to do with the layer opacity or the opacity of the brush/erasor, because they are all set to 100%. I did notice, however, that the first time this problem appeared, the space between the brushmarkings in the brushstroke was set to 25% in the brush settings. Now, everytime i restart the program, this brushsetting seem to be the new default setting for all of my brushes! I can't draw like i'm used to anymore because all of my brushes are so messed up. Does anyone know what's the problem with my photoshop brushes?

    Hi,
Your brush flow isn't set to 100%.
Select the brush as the tool then press and hold in the alt key (opt if on mac). While the alt (opt) key held in, press the 0 (zero) key. Your brush flow should now be set at 100% flow.
Reason: Brush flow is available as an option in Photoshop. In Elements, the option is not shown on the options bar but the function is still present and can be called up using the shortcut keys...brush tool + alt (opt) + number key. This setting is sticky...whatever flow rate you set with the shortcut acts as default for all brushes and is considered a user preference for all sessions.
Here's a video about the this undocumented shortcut:

  • Trouble with back to my mac in hotels?

I've got several Macs that are are connected via iCloud and back to my mac for screen sharing. I've noticed that while traveling I cannot "see" the other Macs and am wondering if some hotel wifi's close out these connections. I can easily see all the other mac users connected to the hotel network.

Hotels often block all ports except for those used used by common programs such as web browsers and email. If you are trying to use another port it is possible they have blocked it for security reasons. Ask the hotel it support. They usually have a trouble number or email address in the room.

  • Having trouble with Layout Editor

    Hi,
I'm using Oracle Forms Builder 6, with patch 18. Whenever I try to open the layout editor, I'm getting an error saying "Oracle Forms Designer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." and the whole program closes. This happens no matter which application I work on, even on a new form. It seems that this is a known bug and fixed in patch 12, but probably not. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the programs more than 10 times now, but still not working, and it was working good till 2 days ago.
My system is Windows XP SP2, Dual core 1.86Ghz with 2GB memory.
    Any help?
    Thank you in advance.

    > and it was working good till 2 days ago
What other software did you install 2 days ago?
Something has corrupted your system. If you have a System Restore point prior to the failure, I would try restoring to that point.
If that does not work, try to completely uninstall Forms and then re-install it.
