Trouble with iMac G5 screen resolution

My wife has an iMac G5, running Snow Leopard; ATI Radeon HD 4670 video.
She was downloading pictures from her Nikon D60 and looked at one of the pictures, when suddenly the screen resolution changed.
I restored the default .icc profile from Time Machine from about a month ago (although it appeared to already be using the factory default).
Screen resolution won't work under any of the options shown under System Preferences / Displays. Any option leaves the screen too large (requiring scrolling to see the menus and the dock at the bottom) or else has strange characters / colors / boxes on part of the screen.
After restoring the .icc profile, I rebooted in Safe Mode (held down shift key while booting) and the display looks fine in 2560 x 1440.
When I reboot and don't go into Safe Mode, the display isn't right even though it's still in 2560 x 1440.
Since it works in safe mode, seems like it can't be hardware.
Any ideas what to do or try?
Thanks.
Keith

Sounds like maybe the Display is Zoomed in?
Try holding the ⌃ (control) key and scrolling down or alternately use the ⌥ ⌘ - (alt command minus) key command and see if that doesn't return to normal view?
The mouse scrolling feature can be disabled in the Mouse Preference and the key command feature can be disabled in the Universal Access Preference.

  • Does a New iMac Always Open With The Correct Screen Resolution?

This may sound a daft question but the other day I visited a friend and when he switched his 2 year old 24" iMac on, I was horrified to see black bands down each side of the screen.
It was obvious he had an incorrect resolution. . . . . I think it turned out to be 800x600!
Anyway I reset it to the correct 1920x1200 and he was amazed at the improvement!
I asked him how it had got like that and he said it had always been that way.
My immediate suspicion was that he had bought the machine second-hand from some idiot who had been fiddling with it but he assured me he had bought it new and that's how it had been from the start.
From what I remember, all my computers have started off with the correct screen resolution and haven't needed any resetting.
    Any idea why this happened?

    Thanks Barbara and den.thed.
Your suggestions will be helpful for anyone with a similar problem looking at this thread, however, they don't apply in this case. (Hope that doesn't sound bad! LOL)
This friend bought the iMac a couple of years ago simply to edit with Final Cut Pro. He doesn't use it for anything else and it isn't even connected to the internet. (He uses a PC for all mundane chores like that).
He claims that upon initial startup it displayed the 4:3 desktop image and assumed it was normal for his machine . . . . . . . . though he must have seen others in the shops displaying correctly.
Incidentally it may not have been 800x600, but it was certainly an incorrect 4:3 aspect ratio.
As he is a very intelligent and skilled film maker and editor I am surprised that he never queried it, after years of using PCs.

Often a Restart and a Reset will resolve these issues...

  • Tiger update 2008-004 screwed up iMac G5 screen resolution/desktop

I have an iMac G5. Installed the Tiger 2008-004 update (and Safari update). When the iMac boots up the screen resolution/desktop gets enlarged just as the spotlight icon appears. As I move the mouse around the screen the desktop moves with it. The desktop is about 5%-10% larger than the standard size. Tried display preferences with no effect. Zapped PRAM. Re-installed updates individually, nothing works.Help!

    Hi,
You probably have 'Zoom' enabled in the Universal Access preferences. Have a play around in there to find the setting to turn it off (sorry for the vague directions but I'm on a Linux machine at the moment )

  • 24"iMAC optimal screen resolution for photo processing

I have a 24" iMAC (matte) and do mostly photo editing. What is the optimal screen resolution for photo processing work?
    thanks
    a/d/

All Screens are 72 dpi (dots per inch- in reference to pixels) no matter what screen resolution you use. The only difference the screen resolution will make is the size of the photo when you are viewing. Higher resolution means the picture will take up less space in you work area, but you will most likely have to zoom in to edit finer areas. Lower resolution will cause the picture you are editing to take up more of your work space and to see multiple photos side by side you will have to zoom out of fron the photos. So, really the choice is up to you.
When creating the original document, this is where you need to monitor the dpi. The higher the dpi, the clearer your photo will look in print. A high dpi also means more disk space is being taken up by the photo. Generally a good dpi for print is 300 dpi. Anything that is only purposed for a screen based project (i.e. internet logos) should be saved at 72 dpi. Why use disk space and cause your pages to take longer load if no one will be able to tell the difference on screen between 72 and 300 dpi?
    Hope this helps!

  • Publishing with a new screen resolution changes the EXE file size quite dramatically

Does anyone know why if you change the screen resolution and
the re-publish a movie why the resulting EXE grows in size quite
dramatically. Is there any way to avoid this to keep file sizes
    down?
    Thanks
    Alastair

Yes it did help, in the respect that I felt confident that it wasn't anything to do with my project settings. The published files became corrupted when they were copied across to our intranet server.

  • Mouse troubles with iMac Summer 2000 DV with OS 9.1

    Hello all,
I have recently inherited an iMac as above, but am having trouble with it. I don't have a keyboard for it, but i do have an old school apple mouse for it. The mac starts fine, but when you are on the desktop you can move the mouse around, but you cant click on anything. Aside from this everything seems fine. I have been using macs for many years now, but am stuck as to what the problem could be. My only thought is that it might need a keyboard just to function.
if anyone could shed some light that would be amazing.
    many cheers

    Hi, mmemarc -
    Welcome to Apple's Discussions.
Unlike earlier Macs (perhaps ADB-based ones, certainly the very early ones with phone-connector type keyboard cabling) which would not fully boot, if at all, if a mouse and keyboard were not present, the USB-based Macs will boot satisfactorily whether or not a keyboard and/or mouse is connected. This is in line with the hot-swap nature of USB.
Old mouses (old hardware of any kind) can be suspect. Unfortunately, in order to test that you will need to get a functional keyboard for the Mac in order to use startup commands.
You need not use an Apple-labelled keyboard; there are many 3rd-party keyboards which work well with Macs, even with OS 9. One company in particular, Macally, offers keyboards for Macs which are also compatible with Mac startup commands - and they are less expensive than Apple keyboards.

  • Avoiding shape changes with changes in screen resolution

How do I avoid changes in the appearance of my movie at different screen resolution? For example, how do I avoid having my circles become ovals at different screen resolutions?
    Thanks

argh!...I've tested it on two computers, and for both, it looks fine at some resolutions and awful at others. I don't have the same problem with the similar Shockwave animations, at least not to the same degree. Are you sure that there's not some setting in Flash or on the HTML page that I'm missing?
You can see the Shockwave animation and the incomplete Flash movie at

  • Adding second monitor to iMac and screen resolution

I want to get the converter to plug my 17 inch IBM SVGA monitor into my iMac. The IBM monitor is quite old (one of the first 17 inch IBM color monitors I think). I understand what converted to buy so I can plug it into to iMac. I have no idea what resolution is possible on the IBM. Is this a concern???
I probably will upgrade to a current flat screen for the second monitor later but would really like to try this and see if 2 monitors at home is useful or not.
    Thanks!

I assume (based on the computer information attached) that your imac is less than one year old? Silver color? If so, you need to find out what connection this other monitor has. Could be one of two - VGA or DVI. If you have a cable for this other monitor already bring it with you to the store if possible (not ordering of the internet). Your imac can produce a variety of resolutions so I would not be concerned about that especially with a 17" monitor.
Could be two possible connectors - mini dvi to vga (probably based on the info you provided) http://store.apple.com/us/product/M9320G/A
Or mini dvi to dvi http://store.apple.com/us/product/M9321G/B

  • Serious issues with iMac, black screen during erase and install-PLEASE HELP

My sister's Intel iMac G5 seriously has been a lemon, it has had SO many issues. It's now 2 years old, and has been rather slow for the maybe the last year, but over the last month or so it has gone way downhill, and it literally takes an hour to boot up, and 4-5 minutes to do anything (open an application, look at a photo in iPhoto, etc.). So, we've been trying to "erase and install" with her install discs to hopefully give the computer a clean boot and see if it helps at all. She has already backed everything up.
She started the erase and install last night, and it was going ridiculously slow. This morning when she woke up, the blue progress bar had gone about half way across. Then she went to get her kids ready, and when she came back in it looked like the computer was rebooting itself (gray screen with apple), but then the screen turned black and she can't do anything on it. Has anyone seen anything similar to this before?
We have had so much trouble getting this to work (we tried an archive and install a few days ago, but it gave her an error at the end). For about a day we couldn't even get the computer to boot up at all, but then miraculously yesterday morning it booted! Please help, I've converted her to Macs but if I can't get hers fixed she may never get one again!!

I'm afraid that it's a contradiction in terms to talk about an intel iMac G5. What your sister has is an intel machine, and she will find good advice by posting to the [intel iMac Forum|http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1110].

  • Trouble with iMac

When I turn my iMac on it asks for my password, once I have put my password in the screen goes blue as it normally does before the background and apps appear however that's where it's stopping. What's wrong with the computer?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Something really strange with iMac G5 screen

My friend has an iMac G5, and he has a strange problem. He was trying to find a shortcut for something in Quark, he was hitting the command key and something else (he can't remember what) and suddenly, his 20" iMac screen doesn't fit the contents of the screen anymore. It's like the dock on the bottom is off the screen, ditto for the menu bar at the top and side to side. When you move the mouse, it shifts the whole screen left, right, up or down. Again, it's as though the contents of the screen are bigger than the 20" screen itself. I've checked resolution, and it's set to native; we've rebooted the computer, but the problem persists. I have no idea what's going on; can anyone please help?
    Thank you.

He might have turned on Zoom. If you look in System Preferences->Universal Access, you'll see the controls there. You can turn it on or off without having that Preference window open, though. Use ⌘-⎇-8 (Command-Option-8).

  • Anyone having trouble with IMac dropping internet connections? inter

My IMac is dropping my internet connection?
Any ideas or suggestions on what is causing this?
    george

I too have this problem but I've had it for about 2 years.  We used to think it was because I was on wi-fi and I was getting interference.  I moved the modem closer and that didn't help.  Then my ISP kept telling me it was my Dlink modem so I chucked that modem out and went with my ISP's modem.  That didn't solve the problem but at least my ISP couldn't blame it on other equipment.   I then moved the modem right beside my iMac and I was still loosing the connection  while on wi-fi.  I got so fed up that I have hard wired my iMac right into the modem and it's still happening.  Ive had my cable company out here a zillion times trying to trouble shoot this.  They changed all of my cabling from the road to my house and from my house to the computer.  They gave me a new modem and then they gave me another new modem but a different brand.  I'm still dropping my internet connection every few minutes.
The one thing that I discovered with my provider is that I'm not actually loosing connection to the internet as they don't see my internet dropping at all.  It's as if the signal comes and goes on this iMac and when it goes, I'm left with my curser doing the whirley-bird until it reconnects to the net.  Usually takes 5 minutes or so but it eventually comes back.  My wi-fi is fine with my iPad and my iPhone but it wasn't with this iMac.  I've been on Leopard, Snow Leopard and Lion and I've had the same problem with all three OS's on this iMac.
I'm totally at a loss as to why this is happening.  It's very frustraging and makes it near impossible to use online banking or booking flights etc because I can't keep a connection long enough.
Anybody have any brilliant suggestions to try?
