Trouble with IMAP SMTP

I am able to access and receive my mail, but I am unable to send mail. I have tried just about everything. I have been in touch with the IT Department at the University and since I have the correct settings and cannot send mail they sent me a copy of their instructions that work using Outlook Express. I was hoping to view them and adapt them to Apple's Mail, but no such luck.
The Instructions said to...
"Select ‘Outgoing server’ tab
Click on radio dial for ‘My Outgoing server (SMTP) requires…’
Make sure radio dial for ‘Use same settings as my incoming mail server’ is selected."
Based on the pictures I found that radio dial is a type of authentication but it is not listed in the authentication type drop down menu of Mail. I tried using password since it should be the same as the incoming server but that did not work. I tried using SSL as well, which also did not work. I tried using port 143 instead and received a similar error message. I have switched back to port 25 and receive the error message saying that the connection on port 25 timed out. Any ideas?
Thanks,

I am having a similar problem with Mail on my Ibook G4. I can receive email with no problem in Mail but when I attempt to send a message it just hangs and the message reads copying to Outbox. My cable provider is also my ISP and I have no problem sending and receiving mail using Mozilla. I have tried rebuilding the mailbox to no avail. In fact in order to quit Mail,I have to use Force Quit because it hangs in this copying process. I repaired permissions as well. What makes it even more curious is that I have a G4 Quicksilver desktop and have no problem using Mail to send and receive messages through the same ISP provider.
Both machines are running 10.3.9 but the mail program on the Ibook says it is 1.3.11. I thought 10.3.9 installed Mail 1.3.2 which is the latest version. Is this the possible source of the problem?

    Hello Sue,
I have an iPad 3, iPad Mini and iPhone 5S and they are all sluggish on capitalisation using shift keys. I hope that Apple will solve the problem because it is driving me crazy.
I find using a Microsoft Surface and Windows 8 phone, which I also have, work as well as all the ios devices before the ios 7 upgrade.
It has something to do with the length of time that you need to hold the shift key down. The shift key needs to be held longer than the letter key for the capitalisation to work. For some reason, this is a major change in the way we have learnt to touch type on computers. I am having to relearn how to type!

Well I am feeling a bit silly now because that was all I had to do. In the past Workgroup Manager had always opened right up to the list of my users, I never even thought to click on that but apparently that was all that was needed.
I still am not sure how the iChat Server preferences changed themselves on me, but it is not the first time I have had weird "settings" issues with our Snow Leopard Server.
    Thanks!

  • Setting up a mail server IMAP + SMTP with an external DNS

    Hi guys,
I'm not sure if i will be 100% clear in this message because i've got a slight pain in the head because i've been trying to get a mail server running in Tiger Server the entire evening.
So here's my problem: The server i'm administrating needs to gain a mail server. For the first time in my life i have to set one up and i'm not to happy about it. I've tried to follow everything in the manual but it isn't working at all.
This is my server situation: Domain registered by a friend points to DNS server of my ISP which creates all the Entries which all point to my server in the datacenter. On that server i need to get an IMAP + SMTP server running.
I've tried everything and I even got the IMAP part working at one time (people could send emails to a temp. account on the server) but after altering the setting so i could send email everything went wrong. No receiving or sending.
    Please help me out!
Thanks in advance and please don't tell me to read the manual because i have and it isn't working.
    greetings Abram

The final domain works like this:
Bought by friend ---> points to ISPs datacenter --> points to server
The current domain works like this
Bought by me ---> dns is hosted by the party where i bought the domain ---> points to server

  • Trouble with My University Email

I am having some trouble with my university email. It is an exchange server or an Outlook Web Access Server. Any ideas?

I am sorry. I was a little vague in my description. I will try to be more comprehensive this time around. I can get email in from the Outlook server. How ever I can't seem to send any out. Now I followed the same steps that Apple gives you for when you can receive but can't send out, and I still can't get it to work.
Here are my settings just in case:
    IMAP Account
    Server name is smtp.mailbox.sc.edu
    Using SSL port 993
    and password protected
    I hope this helps.

  • Using nsMail email server, works fine in ns email tool, as of yesterday TBird 31.3.0 can not send or receive email. Have verified all setting for IMAP/SMTP OK.

Will not retrieve incoming emails. When I try to send one, error message appears: "Sending of message failed.
The message could not be sent using SMTP server smtp.ullisart.com for an unknown reason. Please verify that your SMTP server settings are correct and try again, or contact your network administrator." I have checked all IMAP/SMTP settings and they are fine. I can receive and send emails to the same address via the email server provider's email tool. Using nsMail, WIndows8, Firefox, latest version of TBird. All worked fine two days OK and have made no known changes to computer installation since.

    ExchangeITPro,
    Thank you for your reply.
    >what SP are you at?
As noted in the first paragraph: "We have an Exchange 2010 server, running under Windows 2008R2. Both
the server and Exchange are current for Windows and Exchange updates. Exchange is on SP3 installed about a month ago with no errors reported in the event logs."
    >try restarting the transport services.
Done previously as well as the entire server. No change.

  • A tip on how to get mail to work with O2 SMTP servers.

I found I had a problem in Mountain Lion where Mail could not log into the O2 SMTP servers even though I was using the exact same settings that were on my iPhone, iPad and MBP running Lion?
Well I finally found a solution.
In Mail open preferences and click on Accounts and select the account in the lefthand pane.
Click on the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) and in the drop down menu select Edit SMTP Servers to get:
Normally the radio button against Use Default Ports would be checked, instead check Use Custom Port and insert the number 25 and click OK.
Now back at the Accounts window click on Advanced at the top to get:
Make sure you have Port 110, on mine changing the SMPT to 25 also altered this to 25 so worth checking. When you have finished close the preferences and click on save, quite Mail then restart hopefully all should work now.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take one of the actions that you're having trouble with. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • External email users cannot use IMAPS/SMTPS

We have an email server running but since Mountain Lion (ML) server we do not have the webmail for external users and they are now forced to use email clients on PCs etc., which would be acceptable, if it worked.
This has created a weird problem... they cannot read and send email anymore.
Our server is using SSL and our preferred settings are:
    IMAP
    Port 993
    Authentication: CRAM-MD5
    SMTP
    Port 587
    Authentication: CRAM-MD5
The mail server is set to use automatic authentification (which I do not like because of the clear text option)
All this worked honkey-dorey before on Lion Server, but not now on a fresh installation of OS X ML Server. Only when using an iPhone or and iPad (3G mobile/cell connections) or being on our LAN can people read and send mail. We have users externally in Belgium, Denmark, Serbia, Turkey and Spain, and none of these users can now access their email. All the external users no matter if they use MAC/WINDOWS/LINUX clients have the same problems.
Looking the log at the same time when the users attempt to log in to check email just verify that the server is rejecting their connection in spite of them using correct credentials. The users get messages ranging from incorrect username or password to incorrect password but I can login into their accounts locally or from the LAN.
Could this problem be related to the usertype Local or Local Network User?
Any ideas or help is greately appreciated?
    Peter
(Now, if anyone from Apple should happen to read this then note that it would be greatly appreciated if Apple could mature and stabilize so these severe changes to vital services could be avoided. If you support webmail (good or bad) in one release then continue to do so and if you have an advanced interface to the server functionallity like in Snow Leopard, please let us, the users, be able to keep using those tools rather than using the current 'Nintendo' interface.)

    Hi Peter
Because this is working internally, it should be easy enough to solve.
First thing, most likely obvious, you do have port 993 open to your server?
Second, please post logs. Since we are dealing only with imap, just the imap (mailaccess) log will do.
Third, webmail functionality can be restored. Roundcube or Squirrelmail can be installed on your ML server. Roundcube takes a number of steps, but has a great/fast interface, its waht 10.7 used. Earlier versions of server used SQuirrelmail.
If you are under heavy pressure to get this up now and don't want to wait for forum responses, you can find contact info in my profile.

  • ML Mail, Exchange vs. IMAP/SMTP?

I'm setting up for a new mail service, the provider listed Exchange (MAPI) and IMAP+SMTP servers.
I didn't really want Exchange, what I wanted was IMAP with SSL.  However, Mail's auto config set me up with the Exchange service, via OWA.
Which setup is better (for mail only)? If IMAP+SMTP is better, how do I get Mail to configure that?
    Thanks.

We do not have a BB server at my company and connect our Berry's using Exchange 2003's OWA feature.
Works flawless and have not found any security holes.
Downside is, it does not always sync calendar items as well as having a BB server would.
If you are just looking for mail sync then OWA will work great.
Except for the gaping security hole where you're providing credentials to a 3rd party provider ...

  • AppleMail v7 send wrong authentication imap, smtp

    Hi all,
need help with Apple Mail v7.
I can not connect with an IMAP / SMTP Server (mdaemon). Because mail authentication sends wrong values.
The Mail server send allways "NO Authentication failed".
With wireshark i found this base64 coded user / passwort value (after decode):

    We need only this:

I can connect with thunderbird successfully.

I dont get any error's on my iphone that the smtp password is wrong or the server is down etc. And on exchange i can see that the mail has been send.
This indicates the mail was successfully sent by the SMTP server. If a message cannot be sent for whatever the reason, it will remain in the Outbox mailbox usually with an error message provided. A message moved to the account's Sent mailbox indicates the message was successfully sent by the SMTP server.
A successfully sent message does not guarantee the message will be accepted by the recipient's incoming mail server. Usually when a message is not accepted by the recipient's incoming mail server, a return email error message from the server is usually provided - but not always. Not with the high level of spam being circulated by low-life spammers.
Ask a recipient that is not receiving your messages sent by the iPhone's Mail client to check with their email account provider. You should be able to provide the recipient the long message headers for a sent message that was not received by the recipient.

I'm having trouble with one of my computers and my imap gmail account. Imap on my desktop works perfectly but on my laptop it does not go online (when I click on the caution symbol that asks me if I want to go online, it ignores the request). I am having trouble with my wife's new iPhone 5s. She can receive her telus email but can not send any email what did I do wrong in setting up her account on her iPhone? I tried to just copy the info from her old iPhone.

The sending of email is accomplished via the SMTP server. Take a moment to get back into Settings>Mail, contacts, calendars and select the account. Go to the SMTP server and check to make sure that username and password are entered in all of the appropriate places. If you cannot get it to work after trying to just change those settings, remove the account from the phone and recreate it. When recreating, make sure you enter the username and password in every location, even if the phone says optional. Make sure you have the settings from either the email provider or from the other device. Make sure that SSL is on or off as necessary.

  • Cannot read message bodystructure from Exchange 2010 with IMAP

    Hi,
I'm trying to read mails from MS Exchange 2010 that have multipart/mixed content type and contain only one text/html part. I'm using IMAP and the newest Javamail 1.4.3. The mail processing fails when trying to fetch the bodystructure. I can process the same message perfectly well from Exchange 2003:

Yup, looks like a bug in Exchange 2010, please report it to Microsoft.
If Microsoft gives you a bug ID or any way to track this bug, please let me know.
