Trouble with iPod freezing, etc

Hi, I have a 40GB iPod (it's a year and a half old, thus long out of warranty), and while it frequently freezes, it's easily reset. However, recently it freezes, can't be reset, shows the sad iPod icon, but can be operational again after being set in disk mode. Today, it froze, sad iPod icon'd, and after being plugged in to my computer alternately displays: sad iPod, the still "battery charged to one bar" icon, and the apple icon. When I try to reset it while plugged in, it repeats this cycle, and when I try to put it into disk mode, the screen goes blank and stays like this for as long as I hold down the center and play buttons. If anyone can help after reading this long description, you would be my hero/heroine. Thanks.

  • Do you have trouble with iPod Classic and Ford's SYNC?

Anyone have trouble with Ford SYNC recognizing iPod Classic? When I first bought my Lincoln my iPod Classic worked perfectly--just like it should with Ford SYNC. But a few months ago, when I plug in the iPod using a USB cable I get the message on Ford Sync that says, "incompatible device". At first I thought it was a ford problem so I began testing using a 2010 Buick and a 2010 Lincoln Navigator. My iPod classic doesn't work in either. However, a iPod nano works perfectly in either car. Also if I put some of my music on a flash drive it works fine in the Lincoln. So, I'm convinced that the problem is some type of update that occurred to my iPod or to iTunes.
I have tried several iPod Classics and several USB cables so it is definitely aiPod Classic software problem. By the way, my iPod Classics work fine by themselves--just not through Ford's SYNC.
I'm pretty lost as to possible solutions.
    Thanks,

I have done some experimenting and testing with my old Classic iPod that uses operating system 3.1.1. I don't think this operating system has changed. However, later generation iPods such as nano, shuffle that use a different operating system seem to work absolutely perfectly in my 2010 Lincoln Navigator, especially the ones without a hard drive (i.e. flash drive). My conclusion is that the Ford SYNC updates have somehow not been backward compatible with the older operating system. I know this can be attributed to Apple for part of the problem but I suspect that Ford somehow did not do enough testing with the older iPod operating systems. Turns out there are probably 7 or more operating systems on iPods and while you would assume that "backward compatibility" is a no-brainer, that seems not to be the case with second party vendors such as Ford SYNC. Personally, I have given up trying to solve this problem and have gone to flash drive and a "line in" option. My old Classic iPod works exceptionally well, plus I have a spare so I can probably use these thing till "H freezes over". Being a older retired American these things may actually last a life time!

  • Anyone having trouble with iPod 1.2 update?

After going back from 7 to 6.05 (which I kept on another PC), I still find my iPod 5th gen. crashing occasionally when I play some podcasts. The fix has been to play a few moment from the podcast on the iPod through iTunes.
Everyone is bashing iTunes 7.0/7.01 - might there be a problem with iPod 1.2 upgrade too?

I don't have trouble with that.
But this might mean nothing, because I'm on a German version of InDesign CS6 v8.1.0 on Mac OSX 10.7.5.
    What I try to do:
    Change the preferences.
    Change the workspace.
    Restart your machine.
    Restart InDesign.
The preferences should be sticky then…

*Check your iPod with Diagnostics Mode*
It's possible that the iPod's hard drive is failing. Take the iPod and place your right thumb on the centre SELECT button and your left on the top MENU button. Press down both thumbs for about 6 seconds until your iPod reboots. Immediately move your left thumb around to the rewind button |<< on the left and hold this down together with SELECT for a further 6 seconds. The iPod should now switch into Diagnostic Boot mode. Press MENU for *Manual Test*, then select *IO > HardDrive > HDSMARTData* to reveal your stats. For comparison here are mine for my 2 year old 6th Generation Classic:
    Retracts: 889
    Reallocs: 12
    Pending Sectors: 0
    PowerOn Hours: 2202
    Start/Stops: 894
    Temp: Current 24c
    Temp: Min 10c
    Temp: Max 50c
Take a note of your results. When finished press *SELECT & MENU* for 6 seconds to reset the iPod again.
With modern disc drives sectors are no longer marked bad by a disc scan, if the SMART firmware detects a sector it has trouble accessing it will attempt to invisibly reallocate it to a spare area of the disc.
Note that I've only 12 remapped sectors and none pending. To help explain what the numbers mean here is an extract from the Wikipedia S.M.A.R.T. article:
    *Reallocated Sectors Count*
Count of reallocated sectors. When the hard drive finds a read/write/verification error, it marks this sector as "reallocated" and transfers data to a special reserved area (spare area). This process is also known as remapping, and "reallocated" sectors are called remaps. This is why, on modern hard disks, "bad blocks" cannot be found while testing the surface – all bad blocks are hidden in reallocated sectors. However, as the number of reallocated sectors increases, the read/write speed tends to decrease. The raw value normally represents a count of the number of bad sectors that have been found and remapped. Thus, the higher the attribute value, the more sectors the drive has had to reallocate.
    *Pending sector count*
Number of "unstable" sectors (waiting to be remapped, because of read errors). If an unstable sector is subsequently written or read successfully, this value is decreased and the sector is not remapped. Read errors on a sector will not remap the sector (since it might be readable later); instead, the drive firmware remembers that the sector needs to be remapped, and remaps it the next time it's written.
Large numbers of Reallocs or Pending Sectors would suggest the drive is failing and that you may need to repair or replace the iPod. Check the stats after another attempt to update the iPod. If the numbers increase that again points to hard drive failure. While it won't be good news at least you'll know it isn't some random software problem and you can decide what to do next, e.g. replace the hard drive or the entire unit.

  • Major Trouble with iPod classic

I kept finding myself looking on here to trouble shoot with this issue do i just decided to ask straight forward.
A few days ago i was trying to sync music onto my ipod and was getting the corrupted ipod thing so i did some research and found out how to hold the select and menu buttons and proceeded to put it into disc mode and finally was able to reset my ipod to the factory condition. However, now when i try to load my library to the ipod it will do about 200/900 songs and freeze and then i am no longer able to sync anymore music without restarting both the computer and the ipod and by that time the 200 songs it loaded are gone. i have no idea where to begin with this thing and am beginning to get frustrated with the whole situation. if any of you all have any advice or can at least point me in the right direction i would really appreciate it. thank you

Windows cannot read the Mac disk format.  Try putting it in Disk Mode first
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1363
Run iTunes on the computer.  Connect the iPod to a direct USB port on the computer.  iTunes should prompt you about doing a Restore, to reformat the iPod using the Windows format.  Hopefully it works this time...
If it does not work, it is possible that the iPod's hard drive is faulty.

  • Having trouble with Ipod-because of cold??

I am having a problem with my ipod not wanting to change the songs with my ihome remote when attached to the ihome. It will not puase or play either when using the remote. I have put another ipod into the ihome and it works just fine. I also am having trouble plugging it into my car as it just gets an error. Also double checked this with another ipod. I have already reset and restored it with no luck. I think this problem maybe due to the fact that it was left in my car for a few hours and it was very cold outside. Can anyone tell me what I should/can do to fix this? I works in all other aspects, this is why I am so confused. Thanks!

I have discovered that the error I am getting from the car stereo is saying that it is a "connection" error between the car stereo and the ipod. So that kinda narrows it down and like i've said i know its the ipod b/c i have tested everthing else with a different ipod to double check things.

  • Bug? - trouble with iPod menus

I recently downloaded my first video podcasts, but I'm having some trouble playing them in my iPod. Although they are ok when played in iTunes, they didn't seem to be recognized as video by the iPod - at least when I selected them through the podcast menu (they played as audio with a small imaged on the left). But I just found they play perfectly fine, though, if I select them through the video ("recently added") menu. Weird.
But then under that menu (the "recently added" list under Videos) I got not only videos but also all the recently added songs/audio. Does this happen to everyone? Is it just me, or does this look like a bug?

  • Trouble with iPod setting screen

Right, Ive got all my music on my 5G 30gb iPod, the problem is, I also have a movie I want to put onto my iPod but Im not having much luck with it. I successfully coded the movie using HandBrake, and its currently under "movies" in my library. However, when I connect my iPod to my laptop, the iPod settings screen only brings up the Summary, Music, Podcasts and Contacts tabs. Also under the devices, it only has my iPod and its music. This does not give me the option of adding Photos, Movies or Games. I have iTunes 7.0.2 and Im sure the iPod is up to date because I only recieved it yesterday for Chrismas. Any ideas why and how I can get the Movies, Photos etc. under my devices and on my settings screen when the iPod is connected? Your help will be appreciated.

  • Anyone else having trouble with Pages freezing on iPad 2?

In just the last few days, Page documents are freezing. After I create a document it won't let me name it, file it with others, I don't see the little blue line telling me the document is being saved etc. I haven't lost anything but the program is not acting in a normal way. I used Pages daily.

I, too, had long waiting times. Here's what worked for me.
As I went through some of my Pages and Numbers documents, I got warnings that there were sync discrepancies (differing versions in iCloud and on my iPads and laptop). So, I removed everything from iCloud Drive using my laptop (saved to local folder). I let my iPads sync so they removed all the iCloud-based documents. On the laptop I went through and forced everything to the latest file format (latest Pages and Numbers on Yosemite) by re-saving, then copied everything back into iCloud Drive. My iPads both updated within seconds and everything now syncs quickly.
Don't know if eliminating sync discrepancies is the solution, but it seems to have worked in my case. Hope it might help others.

  • Trouble with ipod recognizing apple id after synching - it keeps telling me to reset my password. I did

Hi! I just synched/updated my ipod touch. Now when I went to use it I received a mesg saying that the Restore was successfully completed and I just need to follow a few steps and I'm done! I follow the steps and it asks me for my apple id and password, I hit next and it asks me for my apple id email then I get a message saying  to try another id, this one is being used. If this is my account then I need to reset my password at iforgot.apple.com.  I reset my password and it still is not working....What did I do wrong?  Please help!   It is much appreciated since I am really severely technoloically challenged. THANK YOU!

    Hello LeloChick,
It sounds like you are being prompted that your Apple ID has been disabled for security reasons, and even though you have reset the password, it keeps re appearing. If you have done all the steps outlined in the following article:
Apple ID: 'This Apple ID has been disabled for security reasons' alert appears

  • Having trouble with Ipod, restoring thing, kind of

This might be kind of long,
So two weeks ago my i tried to load my video ipod onto itunes but my computer said it didnt recognize the usb device, I left it there and then took it out and plugged it back in. This time it loaded on itunes but it said it was currupt. So I called my buddy and he walked me through the whole updating thing, so we updated everything, nothing helped. I tried restoring it but I kept giving me different messages, including the error 1418 one.
I took it to Best Buy, to have it looked at, and they said that nothing was wrong with it, and my computer was the problem. Somehow they also deleted everything off of it. When I got home, It began to work fine, I loaded all my stuff back on and everything. Yesterday, It started doingthe exact same thing. Both times it has been after my Ipod was fully depleted of power, so I think that this might be the problem, but the thing is even when the computer recognizes the ipod, it still gives my the restore screen.
Im grateful for any help anyone can give me, thanks.

See: Error 1415/1417/1418/1428 when restoring any iPod using iTunes 7 or later.

  • Having trouble with ipod and g4 tower.

    hi all,
my ipod is erratic in the sense that sometimes the os will mount it and other times it wont. i cant determine any set of circumstances that lead to either. the ipod always shows up in the ipod updater often with strange serial codes not that of my ipod. when i restore the ipod. it mounts, itunes recognises it. everything works great.
when i eject it and plug it back in,im back at the start, no mount(equally often it mounts), not in itunes (ever), and a different serial no. in ipod updater.
i had the same problem with my ipod mini before it died. so i guess its a problem with my machine. everything else works fine.
ipod works fine with powerbook g4, imac g5 and windows
is this a common problem, is there a fix.

not sure what to tell you other than try posting your same question in the iPod section of the discussion forums.
