That's not good enough
Tell me what you actually did, it will make fixing this much easier.
so i had to make a new user.
What type of user, an Admin, or a Standard user?

  • Padlock will not unlock when i attempt to make changes to system preferences

After recently upgrading to Mountain Lion, when i try to click the padlock to make changes in system preferences, it does not do anything.  I have already repaired disk permissions, still no luck.  Any suggestions??

No luck.  When I click the padlock, it should popup my username and ask for my password.  it doesn't even do that.  the padlock just jiggles and doesn't attempt to open.

  • I don't know my administrator's name in order to make changes in system preferences.

I cannot make any changes in system preferences because whatever 'administrator name' I put down will not work. The password is correct. What steps should I take?

Thank you so much for your help. I apparently had the wrong Admin username somehow, and found it by typing
dscl . -read /groups/admin GroupMembership | open -ef
into Terminal. A text box popped up with the root username.

  • Unable to authenticate myself to make changes in System Preferences or install programs

Hello everyone I am just freaking out because I don't want/can't reinstall the system!!
I just recently started having the problem that every time that I wanna install something, when it should ask me for my password to authenticate my admin account, the window never shows up and the program shows up as "Not responding". The same problem occurs when I try to click on the padlock in the System Preferences to try to make a change it changes from "click the lock to make changes" into "authenticating" but the window never shows up (images below).
I am the only user with Admin rights in my Mac OS 10.10.2; MacBook Pro (13-inch, Early 2011), 2.7 GHz Intel Core i7, 10 GB 1333 MHz DDR3, Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB.
    I have tried:
    - I restarted - no good.
    - Repair the permissions - no good.
    - Also tried repairing the keychain access - no good.
    - In Terminal I tried: sudo killall -9 securityd; sudo pkill -HUP securityd; ssudo killall -HUP securityd - no good (and said that only Apple apps can do that).
I checked in the console and this comes up:

Thanks for the reply, I did what you recommended and reinstall with Command+R and you were right all my files survived!
Unfortunately the situation persist I keep having the same problem and I cannot  authenticate! Still the window to enter my password doesn't show and the lock stays saying "authenticating" even after I reinstalled! :-( what could it be? !

  • Finder wants to make changes to system.preferences

Every time we login to our iMac, a window comes up with "Finder wants to make changes" and asks for my password. The details indicate the change is to the system.preferences file, but I can't recall trying to make any changes.
How do I make sure that someone (e.g., one of our kids) didn't change system.preferences? And how do I keep the message from coming up?
(Note that up to now, I've been clickin on "Cancel".)

Are you sure this is the correct message? There shouldn't be any file with the name "system.preferences". Post the exact message.

    Greetings,
I've never seen this issue, and I handle many iPads, of all versions. WiFi issues are generally local to the WiFi router - they are not all of the same quality, range, immunity to interference, etc. You have distance, building construction, and the biggie - interference.
At home, I use Apple routers, and have no issues with any of my WiFi enabled devices, computers, mobile devices, etc - even the lowly PeeCees. I have locations where I have Juniper Networks, as well as Aruba, and a few Netgears - all of them work as they should.
The cheaper routers, Linksys, D-Link, Seimens home units, and many other no name devices have caused issues of various kinds, and even connectivity.
I have no idea what Starbucks uses, but I always have a good connection, and I go there nearly every morning and get some work done, as well as play.
You could try changing channels, 2.4 to 5 Gigs, changing locations of the router. I have had to do all of these at one time or another over the many years that I have been a Network Engineer.
    Good Luck - Cheers,
    M.

I cannot change my system preferences because I did the wrong thing in creating the admin profile. So, whenever I wanna change the preferences again, it says to me that you cannot do this. How do I resolve this?

Do you have an account that is a type of Administrator? If not, try this tip to restore an Administrator account.

  • Interesting Issue with Screen Saver in System Preferences

Sorry for posting what might be a simple fix, as I thought it would be such, but apparently I just can't seem to figure this out. (as I trouble shoot for Pro Apps support requests every day at the office, but it's always the simplest items that seem to get us for some reason)
Just recently assisted installing Snow Leopard (Mac Box Set) on my sister's machine, clean install, and was in the process of updating her screen saver the way it was previously, Cycling through her Photos in iPhoto. When I first selected iPhoto within the screen saver system preference pane, it would give me a message saying that there were no photos selected/available. Yet, when I opened iPhoto '08, all her photos where all coming up as expected. No matter how many times I tried to select iPhoto in the screen saver pane, it wouldn't come up.
I figured I'd follow the request it was giving me, about using the icon at the bottom of the pane to manually add the "Pictures" folder where they all reside. Instead of just adding the "Pictures" folder to the side bar, it now shows ALL various sub-folders in the side bar list. (making the list about 100x longer than original)
I figured I'd try reversing what I did, selecting the various photo folders/sub-folders and use the to remove them from the list, but each of the various items listed all have the button disabled and cannot be removed. I then made several attempts to delete any/all preference files that were associated with *screensaver* in the various *.plst file namings. Though, no matter how many, or how many times I removed all the obvious screen saver *.plist files I could find, even after emptying the trash, and starting System Preferences once again, the HUGE list of photos were still showing up in the Screen Saver pane within System Preferences.
I appreciate any advice and/or guidance in how I might be able to remove the extra photo folders from the Screen Saver Sys Preferences side bar, and thank you very much in advance for taking the time thus far.
    Best Regards,
    -James-

  • I`m having trouble with my new advanced system the mac os X 10.0.3

    Hello everybody...
I need Help, I would appreciated anything anybody could do to help me...
I`m trying to install the new software the mac os X 10.0.3 and having trouble transfering all my files form the mac os 9.2.2 classic to my new system...Do i have to erase my hard drive to do a clean install???? Could I transfer my files to my home`s computer, instead of buying a portable smartdisk hard drive of 100 Gb, and then so i could transfer my fiels back to my mac without no trouble ????
I Hope anyone could answer to my post as soon as possible, Thanks

Hi, John. If you weren't having trouble with Mac OS 10.0.3, it would be a major surprise. OS X 10.0.x and 10.1.x were unusable beta versions and never should have been released, in the view of most people who ever tried to run them. It would be a severe trial of your patience and a waste of your time to install 10.0.3 on your Mac.
If you want to run OS X, buy OS X 10.2.x (Jaguar), 10.3.x (Panther) or the current version, 10.4 (Tiger). All are available at reasonable prices from AppleRescue. Tiger is also available from any Apple retailer. Carefully read the system requirements for whichever version you prefer, and be sure your computer meets them before buying. If your Powerbook only has a 10GB hard drive, install a larger one (at least 40GB is sensible, since the cost per gigabyte of smaller drives is now exorbitant compared with larger units) before bothering to install OS X.
It would be most advisable to copy everything on your current hard drive to an external FireWire hard drive, then reformat and erase the internal drive before installing OS X on it. Doing so insures that your data is all safe and that your internal drive is in tip-top condition when the new OS is installed. After performing the installation, you can copy the contents of the external drive back onto the internal drive. The external drive will then be available as backup space for the entire contents of the internal drive, including OS X, all your applications, and all your data.
While OS 9 is still installed on your hard drive, check to make sure your Powerbook's firmware is up to date. It will need to be brought up to date while running OS 9, before you install OS X 10.2 or higher. Here is the updater for your 500MHz Tibook:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75132
If the firmware has already been updated, running the updater again will tell you so and will do no harm.

  • Cannot make changes to system HD - partition layout greyed out

    Hi!
I recently reformatted my entire drive and reinstalled Lion with the official Lion USB recovery tool/usb. Now in disk utility the Partition Layout option is greyed out and I can not seem to re partition my disk. I´ve tried repairing my disk rights but still its greyed out.
I ran a demo of iPartition and this message was flagged:
"You cannot make changes to the disk from which your system booted.
To make changes to this disk, you should either boot from an external drive, use Target Disk Mode with another Mac, or create a bootable CD/DVD."
Does this mean I can only make changes with it when booting with the usb? This doesn´t make sense as it worked on the default startdisk before. Does anyone have solution?

    i_Tim_ wrote:
It worked with the usb key, thank you!
You're welcome. Glad that worked for you.
But isn´t there a way to transfer the rights back to my disk or/and the integrated recovery partition?
I do not know the process. I suspect you'd get a quick answer by posting in the Lion forums: https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_os/mac_os_x_v10.7_lion
    Good luck to you.

  • Can't lock changes in System Preferences and Date & Time goes crazy

For some reason the items I lock in the System Preferences window become unlocked by itself. I have the password protect on, but it completey ignores it and unlocks the locks at a random time. This happens most frequently with my Time Machine prefs.
Also my Date & Time changes to whatever time it wants automatically. I have this password locked as well, but the computer seems to have a mind of its own.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

Boot with your install disk, launch Disk Utility, select the boot volume, and repair it. Boot back into the boot volume and try again. If you get the same behavior, move the com.apple.systempreferences.plist file to the desktop, log out and back in, and try again. If still no go, try a safe boot and see if it work s properly.

I am trying to fill in a PDF form online- there should be a submit button but it isn't showing. My partner has an identical Mac and can see the button when he opens the same page- what do I change in my systen system preferences to resolve this?

You and your partner might have different browsers, different versions of the same browser, or most likely a fervent version of the PDF plug-in.
See if just clicking on the Enter key sends the form in.

  • Able to make changes without system Key

I have been trying to set a authorization group for a SAP defined program. SAPMSUU0 is the program which runs in the background when SU01 is run. I go to SE38 and type in this program name and click on attributes and then Change. Here it asks me to enter the system key however when I run the report RSCSAUTH, I can set the authorization group for this program. Is this how it is supposed to work?

Yes. The report does not check the developer key, but it makes some other fierce checks...

Contact Apple for a replacement disc (you will need to give them the serial # of the iMac)

  • Trouble with 'make' file, Oracle pre-compiling

I wasn't sure which category to post this under, so I thought I'd try this one. I have C program with embedded SQL and I've had the same compile and link script for several months. Just a couple of days ago, it suddenly gives me an error:
    proc dbms=v6_char iname=pdmp_read.pc
    *** Error exit code 127
That's a statement from inside the 'proc.mk' file, getting ready to do the precompile. Apparently it doesn't recognize the 'proc' command; inside the env_precomp.mk file, there's a line 'PROC = proc'. I'm guessing that an environmental variable got messed up somehow, but I'm kind of at a loss right now.

If you open the command prompt and type proc at the prompt, does it run the proc precompiler successfully?
C:\> procCheck your PATH environment variable to make sure it correctly references the $ORACLE_HOME/bin directory and that proc installation has not been removed/deleted.
