Trouble with my MacBook Pro OS X snow leopard

I am having trouble with my MacBook Pro. I get a blank screen with a flashing document file with a question mark in it, yes I have tried to install Mac OS X with the original disk but I get no choices of where I wish to install Mac OS X. Please help ;(

Start up from the install disk. Don't start an install: from the Utilities menu choose Disk Utility. Select your internal hard disk (if you can) in the sidebar and click 'Repair disk'. Wait for the process to complete.
It's possible that the disk has failed. If Disk Utility is unable to complete a repair then you will need the services of an Apple-certified technician.

Hi Shootist. I would be interested in hearing some reasoning on this. I almost always use a USB cable to connect my camera to the MBP for transferring pictures, and have moved about 30,000 this way over the last 6 years since my photography went digital. Recently, on the rare occassions when I have only a few to transfer and I was too lazy to go for the cable, I have used the card reader; about half those times I have difficulty getting the MBP to recognise the card. I find I have to press the card very hard into the slot for it to be recognised.
My rationale is quite possibly wrong, but I feel that the USB connectors are more robust and hard-wearing than the flimsy connectors on an SD card. Also, I haven't measured it, but I think the data transfer is faster with the cable. (I just came across this test, which reports noticeably faster transfer for cable than built-in card reader, but the computer was a PC)

  • I was installing soundflower macbook pro mid 2011/Snow leopard Grey loading screen

Hello i was installing soundflower for my macbook pro mid 2011/Snow leopard. However when finishing the installation for soundflower and click restart computer my mac now has a grey screen with a loading bar that doesn't finish. I already try safe mode and it doesn't work. Is there a way to disable sound flower installation?

No. You use "C" to boot from the optical drive
Hold down the Option key to select a different disk drive to boot from
When it comes up with all the disk that have an operating system on them, select the one with the bootable clone on it

I should just change the OS and leave all your apps and data alone.  That said, if any of your apps are old and use Rosetta (ppc apps), they won't run under Mountain Lion.
Make sure you take a good Time Machine or Clone backup before you convert.

  • I took Lion off my Macbook Pro and put Snow Leopard back on and now I can't access Mail or iPhoto. How do I get Mail and iPhoto to work with the Snow Leopard I just put back on?

Hi. I was having slowness problems with my Macbook Pro and thought I would re-install Lion but put Snow Leopard back on by mistake. I bought the computer used with Lion on it and don't have access to the USB drive or a username/password to reinstall Lion. Now I can't access Mail or iPhoto since I put Snow Leopard on.
Is there a way to get my Mail and iPhoto working again with Snow Leopard or do I have to "re-upgrade" to Lion?
    Thanks!
    Steve

You can't. When you converted those libraries to Lion's format, you lost the ability to go backwards. Unless you saved a bootable backup./clone or Time Machine backup of your previous SL installation, you're up the proverbial creek w/o a paddle.

  • Macbook Pro OS X Snow Leopard and CS2 upgrade and CS5?

    Hi everyone,
I am a newbie and would love to hear some thoughts on this.
I currently have the Adobe CS2 which I use on my toshiba. but all that is about to change because I recently got a macbook pro that runs on Snow lepoard. I have read some of the other treads and have come to the realisation that my CS2 will not work on the macbook?!
What is really the case? Is there no chance at all that I will be able to use my CS2?
If so, that means I will need to get an upgrade. Currently, my CS2 is the normal version, but I am now a student so I will be eligible for the student discount & upgrade. Is it possible to have all that arranged over the Adobe site? I can only see the student option, but not the upgrade option for student editions. Or should I head over to a store?
Is it true that I can wait till CS5 to come up before I lose my upgrading option?
Even though I have had CS2 for almost 5 years now, I am still very much a beginner (shameful I know). Is it worth even getting the upgrade in my case? And will CS5 be compatible with the macbook pro leopard?
    Many thanks in advance!

I don't accept this at all.
Firstly, CS2 not only didn't work properly on Leopard, but nor did it on Vista. So both Microsoft and Apple are presumably grossly violating this OS upgrade principal?
Secondly, Microsoft manage to keep their apps updated without too much complaint. Hence office 2004 still runs faultlessly on Leopard
Thirdly, we have seen the Adobe approach to upgrades with Phtoshop / Lightroom and Camera Raw. How many people have bought a new digital SLR just to find that Adobe doesn't support it and will only support it if you pay for the next upgrade.
Finally, the job of an OS build is to improve the OS and let 3rd party developers have the beta releases so they can test their apps on it. If the app's developer finds it is a big job, why not charge existing users a nominal fee for the patch? I'm happy with CS2 functionality and would happily pay a sensible amount for some fixes rather than £700 + for an upgrade. We all understand that software moves on, but having to pay huge sums for an upgrade after 2 years is simply unacceptable.

  • I am having having trouble with my macbook pro

Hi, I recently purchased a macbook pro off of ebay it is a year 2007. It was running great until I tried to install os x snow leopard. Everytime it failed and evetually my computer had a kernel panic and now I cannot get past it. Everytime I restart my computer I see the same message. I have tried rebooting in safe mood and many other methods but I still cannot turn my computer on to diagnose the problem. Does anyone have any suggestions that might help me get past the kernel panic? I made an appointment with the apple store for it to be looked at but in the mean time I would like to try and get the computer to at least function haha. So if anyone has any advice please let me know, Thank you.

Ask the seller for the DVDs that originally came w/the comp.  You need them to troubleshoot.  Due to Apple's license aggreement, Macs that came pre-installed w/SL & earlier are not suppose to be sold w/o them unless the comp is being sold for parts only.
You can get replacement System Install & Restore CD/DVDs from Apple's Customer Support - in the US, (800) 767-2775 - for a nominal S&H fee. You'll need to have the model and/or serial number of your Mac available.
If you're not in the US, you may need to go through the regional Apple Store that serves your location to find the contact number. Here's a list of links to all of those - http://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/intlstoreroutingpage.html Another resource:  International Support Phone #s.

  • Permissions trouble with new MacBook Pro

I had previously upgraded my MacBook Pro (original unibody model) to Mountain Lion with no apparent issues. I have two Users, both with Admin status and everything appeared to function as before.
I just traded in my old MacBook Pro for a new current model Retina MacBook Pro, using Migration Assistant upon first startup to move everything over from the older machine. Most everything has been seamless - except for Permissions.
I started seeing messages appear indicating I didn't have permission to open files, run apps, delete files, etc. Looking at Get Info, I found Sharing & Permissions was only set up for (if I recall correctly) Admin, Administrator and something called Wheel. I solved the permissions issue while logged in as the primary User by adding both Users to the Sharing & Permissions section of the Info screen for the entire hard drive, giving them Read & Write access, and selecting Apply to enclosed items... That seems to have solved the issue for the primary User.
But then I tried working logged in as the secondary User. I started getting messages indicating I could not save a file I had just modified because I did not have permission, and that I should contact the Administrator. Well, that's me. So I tried the same thing that I did logged in as the primary User, but there was no change. I still can't save a modified file logged in as the secondary Admin User.
I haven't found anything that addresses this - except to learn where the Wheel User originated. Can someone point me in the right direction to where I can learn how to gain full, unlimited access to my own computer - under bothe User accounts?
    Thank you.

You corrupted the permissions of every file on the volume. Restore everything from the backup you made before doing that. Then do as follows.
Back up all data. Don't continue unless you're sure you can restore from a backup, even if you're unable to log in.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click the following line on this page to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1 or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • TripleHead2Go DP Edition with MacBook Pro 13" and snow leopard 10.6.3

I have my triplehead2go DP edition set up, the problem is the resolution of my external monitors. If I try to set at maximum resolution, my external monitors go crazy/corrupt with graphics card NVIDIA GeForce 9400M. The work around according to Matrox is to downgrade from 10.6.3 to 10.6.1. Is there a way to do this? If you have 15" or 17" you can select high performance under energy saver, but that is not available for 13". I would like to find a way that would not require to reinstall 10.6.0. Will 10.6.4 fix this as well? I am only using two monitors (have to connect to ports 1 and 3) and should be able to set my resolution above 1880 x 900 (2 x 1400 x 900). I am using two Dell 24 inch monitors (U2410).

Is there a way to do this?
Reinstall 10.6 and install the 10.6.1 update only.
Will 10.6.4 fix this as well?
    Nobody here would know that.

  • I'm having trouble with my Macbook Pro's trackpad

I have a 2011 Macbook Pro that I got about a month ago. Anyway, everything is running great and fine until 2 days ago. My track pad stopped functioning as properly as it did before. Now when I click on a folder or a track on iTunes, it takes multiple clicks to open the folder or to play the song. I thought something was wrong with my track so I used my own mouse from old computer to use it. It worked but the same problem with the clicking remained. It takes multiple clicks to open a file, a song or a folder. What should I do? Did my computer get a virus or something? Any help would be appreciated.

  • Has anyone had trouble with the MacBook Pro Hardcase cover?

I bought a black hardcase cover for my MacBook Pro half a year ago, today i decided to remove it again. When i took it of (after fighting with it) there was dark spots and scratches all over. Has anyone had the same problem? And how should i reacht? If i want to sell the computer now, the price will be much lower that it would be without the scratches.

Like JoeyR said, you can complain to Incase, but I doubt there's anything they will be able to/willing to do about your problem. If the aluminum has been scratched, the only way to get rid of those scratches is to either resurface the metal, or replace the display assembly. The former is not an option, and the latter will be way too expensive. You can give it a go, and try to get Incase to pay for the process. But chances are really low. Just avoid using those hard plastic cases in future. I never use them, and my MBP 15 is as good as new! Just take care of your mac, don't drop it, don't put it in a bag with pins, needles, blades, pens etc ( or use a sleeve) and don't drag it around rough surfaces. That is more than enough to keep the aluminum scratch and dent free. The reason Apple uses Aluminum unibody is because it's tough and durable.

I am having some trouble with my computer, what happened was: I was playing on a game, I played with a magnet, it started to go slower and slower, I pressed F9 then it went slower and then it went to a blank screen with a flashing document with a question mark on it. I tried the original OS X installation disk but when it came to choosing the area of which I save it, it showed no areas.

Startup your Mac while holding down the Option key. That should prompt the Startup Manager window where you can select the startup disk then click Restart.
If the startup disk is not available from that window, you may be able to repair the disk.

Well this is the report, wish you can help me and tell me what I need to do, its quite difficult to find a support in Argentina for Mac!

You have the MacBookPro6,2, the Edsel of Macs. You might be able to resolve the problem by reinstalling OS X. Try that first, if you haven't done so already. Otherwise, you may be covered by this program:
MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010): Intermittent black screen or loss of video
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. The routine hardware diagnostics used by service providers may not detect the fault. There is a specific test for this issue.
Print the first page of the panic report, and the support page linked above, and bring them with you.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.
You may be able to stop the panics by disabling automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saver preference pane, but that's not a solution.

  • Macbook Pro 17" has Snow leopard light?

    Hi,
I was just wondering how come the new macbook pro 17" can have support for 8gb of ram?
As I understand it, Snow Leopard will be able to handle much stronger component in the future. Does the new macbook pro have some kind of new software support for the new components in the computer?
It all boils down to the question: How can the New Macbook Pro 17" have 8gb of ram?
    Kind Regards,
    Stephan

No. Snow Leopard is not yet released. The limitation on MacBook RAM on previous models was a product of the particular Intel notebook chipset being used, not the operating system. You've been able to order Mac Pros with Leopard for quite some time now... The feature of Snow Leopard is not that it's a 64-bit OS, Leopard is that, it's that all of the 32-bit libraries (Frameworks) are now 64-bit.
Leopard has always been capable of addressing more than 4G of RAM.
Newer MacBooks now use a different Intel laptop chipset that supports more memory, that's all. The hardware is new.
