Trouble with my newly burned DVD's

I am having trouble with my newly burned DVD's which are produced using iDVD. They seem to play a couple of times then start freezing (usually on DVD players). I played one last night on my mac and it made a horrible grinding noise which you could hear slowing until the disc and movie froze completely. This is causing me much concern as I am burning DVD's as part of my wedding video business for newly weds.
I have a few questions
1. Is there a manufacturer that produces high quality DVD's to ensure my clients get the best.
2. Is there a chance that my mac DVD burner might be glitchy?
3. Does my mac DVD player/ burner need cleaned regularily?
4. Is there external DVD burner that I can buy that would ensure high quality DVD burning process?
5. I print DVD covers to stick onto the DVD's. Does this reduce quality or effect the playing process in anyway?
amy experience/ knowledge would be appreciated.

Hi
I can only try to answer - BUT I'm an Amateur - and can not give 100% Professional advices and take NO responsibility for how they may affect You. But I will try as best as I can.
1. Is there a manufacturer that produces high quality DVD's to ensure my clients get the best.
• I only use Verbatim DVD-R as they play well (There also is Tayio Juden - never had any possibility to try these)
2. Is there a chance that my mac DVD burner might be glitchy?
• I set down burn speed in iDVD (x4) to get as few burn errors possibly
3. Does my mac DVD player/ burner need cleaned regularily?
• Mine does - I run a Cleaning DVD from time to time
4. Is there external DVD burner that I can buy that would ensure high quality DVD burning process?
• Yes but I've doubt that the result will be any better or worse - MY OPINION - I've got a ForeMac DVD burner as last resort.
5. I print DVD covers to stick onto the DVD's. Does this reduce quality or effect the playing process in anyway?
• NEVER PUT ANY LABLE OR STICKY DEVICE ON ANY DVD or CD - as they will lose in stability and result will be a MAL-Functioning DVD (or most probably not working at all - especially DVDs)
I do - use printable DVDs and use printer that accepts DVDs. They look as Pro Quality DVDs

Problem with iDVD - cannot burn DVD.
Self has a MacBook Pro, which al new software.
My problem is, when my burn a slideshow, prop process ever before burning.
Box show: Multiflexing and burning: write Lead-in, then the process stops and ejects the disc.
I have burn a Movie test – no problems.
    Self use Verbatim DVD-R
Who can help - what should I do?

How did you create the slideshow and get it in iDVD?
As a general comment try following this workflow to separate the encoding and burning processes:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the  File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option.  This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

If you are still within your 15 day return period.  Call Apple they will sent out iDVD at no charge.  (There are no realistic substitutes.)
Nicely explain that you may return the computer without iDVD.  You MUST speak to a senior advisor to get a free copy. The first tier people cannot do it.

If that doesn't work you can purchase iLife 11  (includes iDVD) on disk.
IDVD is a wonderful piece of software and well worth the low cost of $40.

  • Problem with picture in burned DVD from Final Cut Express quicktime file

I use Final Cut Express HD to edit. On more than one occasion, I have exported a movie using quicktime conversion and then used iDVD to burn it to a DVD. Every time I do this, the DVD's picture is shaky, especially when there is fast motion. I have tried burning with both the best performance and best quality settings in iDVD and it doesn't make a difference. The same problem occured when I tried to use a friend's computer to do the same thing. We both have the new 20" iMacs. I am not sure if it is Final Cut or iDVD that is the problem, but quicktime files that are not from Final Cut Express are not a problem. I have a feeling it is a setting somewhere that needs to be changed. Thanks!

    Greetings.
I've personally never used iDVD for any sort of DVD authoring, but the symptoms that you're describing are giving me the impression that there may be an issue with the MPEG 2 encode. Again, I don't know iDVD so you might be better off asking this question in the iDVD forum.

  • Newly burned DVD won't play last chapter

I'm new to iDVD, so this may be a dumb question. I just burned my first DVD and when I put it into my DVD player it plays all but the last chapter of my menu. Any ideas?

First test is to load it into your Mac and see if it plays with Macs "DVD Player" utility.
Let us know whether it plays the disc with or without the same problems.

  • Some newbie trouble with default scripts in DVDS-4

    HI
We are trying to make video that works with menus and controllers and a contents listing at the beginning. It's content is like a book.
Most of us write Flash or Director and are not used to the DVDSP-4 constructs.
Simple set up is: animation intro that ends at a main menu; from which chapters are selected.
1 - Each video for a chapter is listed on a chapter menu and has from 2-10 videos listed on a chapter menu. We grouped these videos on their own separate track, by chapter.
Is this right? Do I need extra markers? At what amount of time is the DVD bogged down?
2 - We want each separate video, once played to jump back to the source chapter menu, and to have an both over lay buttons and content buttons. Chapter content menu buttons are play all and individual video buttons.
The overlay buttons are to the main menu, quit and replay last video or stop.
    Is this possible?
    Thanks,
    John

OK - let's try to set out a few ground rules here! The first and most important is that all of your 'book' content lives in a track - you can use lots of tracks if you wish, but you really only need one for the first intro and perhaps a second for the rest of your content.
Secondly, the chapter markers that you place throughout the track can be used in different ways. You can start playback from a marker and continue on to the end of the track, skipping forward using the 'next' button on the remote control. You can also arrange the chapters into 'playlists' called stories so that you only play a set of markers at a time, and then return to a menu. This sounds like the way you need to do things, IMO.
I'll assume that you are using a track for each set of content, as I believe this is what you have already got set up. You will need to switch between the outline view, the menu editor, the connections tab (or the property inspector... or both) and the time line. I assume that you have already got your assets imported, and that you have only one menu in the entire project. The menu has buttons that will be used to play each piece of content.
Your first piece, the introduction, needs to play as soon as the disc is put into a player and started. Whatever item you nominate like this is known as the 'First Play' item. Look in your outline view, control click on the track with that footage in it and select 'first play' from the contextual menu. You'll see a small icon appear on the track image to let you know that it is set. Now, still with that track, look in the property inspector and find the 'End Jump' drop down box, and set the end jump to go to your only menu, and to the appropriate button on that menu.
Set the menu buttons up so that you can navigate between them correctly (use the 'Settings' box and choose 'auto assign buttons now'), and set the target for each button to go to the relevant track in each case.
Make sure that you put the right content into each track, and create chapter markers along the track itself. Repeat this for each track you have got. You get a start marker by default, but you cannot put a marker right at the very end of the track - it needs to be a few frames back. Do not do anything else to the markers, go back to the outline view (or property inspector if the track is still selected) and set the end jump to go back to your menu and the button that links to this track. Also, set the menu command to go back to the menu and button, too.
Repeat this for every track that you have got linked to from the menu.
You should now be able to simulate this. When you do, the intro track should play, then go to the menu. You should then be able to get to each track by using the buttons, and get back to the menu by either pressing the menu button on the remote control, by letting the track play to its end, or by skipping chapters along the track by pressing the next button until you get to the last chapter... shortly after this chapter marker you'll reach the end of the track.
Make sure that your 'Title' button is also set to your menu, too - it should be by default when you only have a single menu, but click on the disc icon in the outline view, and go through the settings in the property inspector. If you set it correctly, the fourth way to leave a track is to use the title button.
Remember, if you play a track and use the menu button to go to the menu, pressing it a second time will take you back to the track... unless the track had finished playing. This is all normal.

  • Anyone with a clear workflow of what to do with projects after burned DVD

I am in dire need of help.
I've completed a project using FCE-export to iMovie-shared over to iDVD-and burned on a DVD
I want to keep the project in case the client wants another copy, or even to make changes.
I tried to start another project, but it said low disc space.
I then bought a Seagate external drive 160gb to try and transfer files over, but at this point, I've moved things over that I wasn't really sure should be moved.
    I have a Mac OS X version 10.4.10 -Processor: 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo-Memory: 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM - startup disk Macintosh HD

**What happened to the Auto Saves?**
*The Autosave Vault is still here, but as I try and open the most recent file, another popup says 'Missing Disks' -To preserve the integrity of the data used by Final Cut Express HD, its necessary to ensure the existence of the following paths:---'Unknown' is offline (is whats in the box)*
**Are there OFF-LINE clips in the Timeline (if openable)?**
*I can't open the FCE projects at this moment.*
    **What format is the external?**
*It was someone else who suggested below:*
    *-Go into Disk Utility*
    *-Select the disk*
*-Make sure all your files are off the drive before you do this:*
*-Change Format to Mac OS Extended.*
*The files that were on the external, I trashed, I thought since I dragged it there initially from the startup disk, it was a copy. As I did the above suggestion, right now, I can't see the external anywhere, but yet its plugged to the MacBook Pro.*
**It's important to know the difference between a Project, Scratch Disc and a project file.**
**Where is the project file located - internal or external?**
*It was external and internal, but after the suggestion of another person, I trashed all files in the external, and now its only the INTERNAL.*
*The project file is located under project files that I created under DOCUMENTS, but as I try the FCE project files, it says the same pop up as above 'Missing Disks'*
*As I try and open the project's iDVD project file, the pop up is 'Missing Files.'*

  • Trouble with CDRs after burning playlist

Feeling in a Christmassy mood, I compiled a playlist of songs, some imported from CD, some bought from iTunes store & some downloaded from MP3 Rocket Pro.
Playlist is fine on PC, but on listening to discs, all the tracks start part way through. I have tried both single use & re-recordable CDRs.
I am quite new to i-Tunes, but I don't think I'm doing anything stupid, and its beginning to drive me nuts, now!
Any advice would be gratefully appreciated!

    Hi m
When not knowing what to do.
There are a set of things to test:
    1. Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk: It should have 25Gb or more. This is especially important when running iDVD.
iDVD can’t address any other hard disk as scratch-disk so space is of uttermost importance.
    2. The Hard disk is untidy:
Repair Permissions (Apple Disc Util tool) - Run this
Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool) - To run this You need to start from a CD/DVD or external hard disk.
    3. Delete iDVD pref file - or rather start a new user/account - log into this and have a re-try
    4. Let Your Mac be turned on during one night. At about midnight there is a set of maintenance programs that runs and tidying up. This might help.
    5. Program miss-match:
iDVD 5.0.2, Mac OS X.3.9 AND QuickTime 6.5.2 - is OK
iDVD 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4 - is OK
iDVD 7.0.1, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4 - is OK
    6. UPDATES - is important: iLifeSupport8.1.1.dmg is important for running iLife08 bundle.
    7. iDVD (08) Locate theme folder. Move out iDVD1, iDVD 2 and eventually iDVD4 folders to desktop - re-try
    8. Mac OS X.5 (Leopard) - at least iDVD 1 to 4 - don’t work any more
    9. Trying to collect info on. Leopard system:
    iDVD08 - - - - - - - - - - not working - - - -> Should be soluble
    iDVD 6 - - - - - - - - - - not working - - - -> Should be soluble
    iDVD 5 - - - - - - - - - - not working - - - -> Don’t bother - will not work
    iDVD 4 or previous - - not working - - - -> Don’t bother - will not work

  • Audio missing on burned DVD

Follow me on this one: Made an iMovie and shared it with iDVD. Did all the menu items, etc. and burned the DVD. After watching the DVD, I wanted to make some edits. I went into iMovie and did the edits.
I did not create a new iDVD with the edited iMovie because I happened to discover that when I made the edits in iMovie, they actually translated to the original iDVD. So I saved the project in both iMovie and iDVD and burned the new DVD.
PROBLEM: Everything came out perfect except, the audio. I have audio on the menu (which I put there) but there is no audio throughout the rest of the DVD.
I checked my iMovie and audio is there. I reviewed the iDVD project on my computer and the audio is there. I checked the audio levels on iMovie and they're at 100%. I made sure that the "check boxes" on the 3 lines of audio were checked and operable. I checked the "map" on iDVD and there is no indication of any audio issues. Yet, when I play the newly burned DVD, there is no audio other than the menu music.
    Help!!!

Before you burn an updated project, it is a good idea to "Delete Encoded Assets" from the Advanced menu. That will start you afresh with new encoding for the updated project.
If you have incorrectly placed chapter markers in your movie, sometimes that can cause audio problems on a DVD. Make sure that you remove or reset any chapter marker within 1 second of the beginning or end of your movie, or in a transition. This would include the "beginning" marker that is automatically set.
You also could try dragging your iMovie project into a new iDVD project, and burning from there.
Instead of burning directly from iDVD, save the iDVD project as a disk image (an option from the File menu), wait until the assets have encoded (it takes a while), and then play the disk image by double clicking on it, and then clicking on your DVD player app icon on your Mac. If it plays fine, then your encoding is O.K. The next step would be to try burning a DVD from the Disk Image by using the Utilities/Disk Utility app on your Mac. Open the Disk Utility window and you should see your Disk Image icon displayed in the left hand pane. If it's not there, drag it into that pane. Select it and click on the burn symbol at the top of the window. Insert a DVD-R disk and then click on the "burn" button.

  • Can iMac burn DVDs playable on other DVD players?

I have a NON-Copyrighted DVD that I need to duplicate. This is a basic DVD, created by my son's school PTA for a school presentation, that will play on any DVD player. I have followed the online steps to create an image using Disk Utility (with DVD/CD Master), then burn the image onto a blank DVD. This newly burned DVD will play only on the iMac - it will not play on any other DVD player. Is the iMac capable of duplicating DVD that will play on any DVD player?

    Hi again Steve,
    SteveLasher wrote:
Thanks to everyone for your help and suggestions. I'm really just shaking my head here. I bought this Mac hoping things like this would be easier than on my old PC, but I hate to say I am really regretting ever getting this thing.
Hey, no problem... a pleasure, as always.
With regards to any regrets you may have in getting a Mac, I, nor anyone else here, can help you with that decision.
Your symptoms are genuine and are regrettable. I could repeat what I stated in my last post; that DVDs burned using DU work for me whether played on my Mac or on a DVD player for viewing on the telly. That would not help you though as your experience is different.
What I will suggest is that you do what is right for you and your needs. If that means selling your Mac and going back to a PC, so be it.
I am curious though. When, before you got a Mac and you used a PC to burn DVDs, did you use MS Windows in-built burning software (is there such a thing?) or did you use a third party utility like Nero. If you used something like Nero, then that's no different to investing in Roxio Toast for the Mac.
Regardless, I genuinely do regret that your experience with your new Mac isn't up to the standards that you expected. I could suggest many advantages for using a Mac (as, indeed, many others here can) but the decision is yours. You do have a great computer there so it's up to you.

  • Can you burn dvd's in PSE 11 without purchasing more software?

I just upgraded from PSE 7 because I had problems with sharing and burning dvd's, now it seems that I can not burn a cd or dvd without buying more software.  What am I missing here?

The options in PSE have always been limited where it’s possible to create a data disk for viewing on computers or a back-up disk. Windows users can create a wmv file and then use that in the free Windows DVD maker to create a DVD which can be played on a TV but it’s a bit cumbersome. Ideally you should have purchased the combo Photoshop+Premiere Elements which is the best value, imho and which will give you lots of output options for DVD, Youtube, Vimeo, Facebook etc. I had a similar problem some years ago but managed to get my store to exchange PSE for PSE/PRE.

  • DVD Studio Pro will not burn DVD in Lacie D2 External DVD Burner

I ordered a new pack of DVD's. These are the Beall 16x DVD's I bought from Meritline.com. I had been using the 8x Beall's with no problem. I was told that my interal drive was not compatable with the faster burning DVDs. So I bought a LaCie D2 External DVD burner 16x. I still can't burn a dvd in dvd studio pro. I tried Patchburn. It said that this burner is already supported.
I am using DVD Studio Pro 2.
    Any ideas?

Have you tried burning on other types of brands when burning to your external LaCie? My company bought a NEC external DL burner and it only worked with some type of discs, Maxell DVD+R DL worked but Traxdata DVD+R DL and some other Noname disc didnt work, maybe try that?

  • Cannot burn DVD (Domain users)

Am experiencing a problem in my employer's network with regards to burning DVDs from Final Cut Pro X.
When we click Share > DVD and hit go, the program starts "Processing", and once this bar fills up, it disappears without burning. The disc drive does not even spin up. I can tell why this is, becuase the Sharing Center window does not open.
This only affects our domain users - logging on as a domain admin or a local admin on the same mac works fine and sharing centre will open. When logged on as a domain USER, the button to open sharing center isnt even present, its just entirely missing.
We have to use domain user accounts, and right now they cannot burn from FCPX!! Does anyone know a solution for this one? I can only think its some kind of permission issue, but I can't think where to look to try anything.

Why not simply "burning to HD" and then use an external tool (i.e. Toast) to burn the actual DVD? I always write to HD first for a final quality check.

  • Satego X200-21D: TS-L632D DVD-Drive doesn't read and burn DVD-R DL

    Hallo,
I have problems with my SATEGO X200-21D DVD-Drive
TS-L632D to read an burn DVD-R DL discs.
I contacted the Toshiba-support via e-mail ans asked
for a new drive-firmware, but the answer did not solve my problem.
There are only updates in the toshiba download area,
but not for my drive model. I can send my notebook
for money to a service partner, to check this problem.
I can not understand this! I bought a highend notebook
for 1.700 EUR and it is no firmware update support
available to solve problems with newer discs?
If i search for this problem in the WEB, there an a lot of
questions and problems with reading and burning
DVD-R DL discs with this drive modell!
    How can it be???
I hope for some hints to get a firmware drive update
to fix the problems reading and writing DVD-R DL discs.

    Hi,
yes I have got the TS-L632D drive and not the TS-L632H - that is true. But why is no firmware update available for TS-L632D,
because also this drive has problems with DVD-DL discs!? I payed 1700,- EUR for my Thoshiba notebook with the
DVD-drive TS-L632D. And in my opinion it can't be, that for this drive version is no firmware update available!!!
Other companys (f. i. DELL , SAMSUNG) support this drive version and offer firmware updates for this drive modell.
It is a fact that my DVD-drive has problems to read and burn DVD-DL discs! This is a known fact for many drives and therfore
exists firmware updates for the DVD-drives to fix this problem. But why not for my drive modell???
My be it was an error to by a Toshiba Notebook!? I am a customer and I don't care what special
DVD-drive modell is in my notebook (TS-L632D , H or wwhat ever)!!!
My message to Thoshiba: "Pleas help me to solve my problem!!!"
