Trouble with preview in finder

hey All!
Here is my problem, I have 10.4.2 installed on my IMac and my powerbook, and quick time pro for both. The problem is, that when I view movies in finder on my IMac, it shows up as a preview in finder. This however is not the case on my powerbook, where the round ball just keeps spinning ending up with no preview. I have installed VLC on both computers as well, but no matter what I do I cant get it working on my powerbook! Plz help!
Thanks in advance
Ehlerz

Open the Audio MIDI Setup on the offending computer (the Powerbook).
Set the Audio Output Format to 44100Hz. Quit and restart.
You should also set up a new user account (great for testing things) and try the offending file again.

Hi there are various threads here for this issue
this one being the most extensive
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3191263?start=0&tstart=0
First step is re-start the finder
1. Press command-option-esc simultaneously
2. Select Finder
3. Click on re-start
Then according to the above link, several people tried different things.
Try out what you find in above thread

I need any help i can get, im having trouble with the app find my iphone. I have lost my iphone, checked on the computer, and somehow, took it away so how do i get it back??

If you are saying that after signing into iCloud it is telling you device is not found, it could be for any number of reasons. If the battery is dead, if the SIM has been removed, or if someone else has the phone and they have restored it, it will not be shown. Also, if you located it once and then sent a remote wipe, it disables the abililty to locate the phone with Find My iPhone.

• Trouble with MacBook Pro finding AirPort networks

I recently bought a new (refurbished) MacBook Pro (15", 1.83GHz), to replace my old iBook, which was one of the early white models, circa 2001.
Everything about my new computer is wonderful, of course, except that every time I boot up, wake from sleep, or turn on the AirPort, it takes up to a full minute for the AirPort to find any open networks. This happens at school (where there are AirPort base stations all over the place), at home (where we have a Belkin router, and several neighbors have others), and at my parents' house (where they have a linksys router). It doesn't seem to matter whether the networks use encryption or not, nor how close or far I am from the nearest router. If I know the name of a nearby open network and type it in, I can get it, usually. On my old iBook, I had a little trouble with some of the networks at school sometimes, but never with this kind of delay across the board, and certainly never at home nor at my parents'.
Also, at home, when the the AirPort finally does find the available networks, it NEVER chooses my router first, even though it's the only one in the neighborhood that I listed under "Preferred Networks."
I've read some similar posts, dealing with problems with accessing encrypted networks, but nothing seemed to address my particular issue. It might be a defect with the AirPort or firmware, but I wanted to check, first.
(Oh, and I'm not a complete newbie, but tech-speak often goes over my head. Please keep it simple.)
Thanks!

This is how I fixed the problem on my MBP.
Go to Macintosh HD > Library > Preferences
Delete the folder SystemConfiguration
Go to System Prefrences > Network > Show+Network Port Configuration. Check Airport and Built-in Ethernet and make sure Airport is on the top of the list.
Reconfigure your wep passwords and it should work. Worked for me. Also, you will have to redo your power settings.

• Macbook pro 13" i7 and trouble with iphoto and finder

Hi, I've just bought last week the new macbook pro 13" i7.
I've just replaced the HDD for an SSD Intel 510 Series 120Go and it works very well !!!
But since yesterday when I've plugged my EOS 450D in order to transfer some photos... The problem is that I've a bug with iphoto: when I want to empty the trash (from iphoto), it doesn't work, photos are again in the trash, or when I look some picture it bugs !!!
At this moment iphoto doesn't run correctly, you know like when the "mouse" is searching all the time !!! Just after the finder and another soft bug... but not all the the time.
This trouble appears too in the menu: "files" appears with less word or "photos" or "event"...
So I've re install OSX since Time machine but nothing.
I've re install the original HDD but always the same !!!
I've empty the RAM with "cmd+alt+P+R" but always the same...
I've re install OSX with CD but nothing.
Problem with graphic card ? with RAM ? Motherboard ?
I don't think that it is th SSD because I've the same problrm with the original HDD.
I don't understand the macbook is new.
I need some help please.
Thanks in advance.

• Anyone else having trouble with Preview?

I work with graphic files (pdfs, tiffs, jpegs) on a daily basis and use Preview extensively. For the past several weeks, Preview crashes multiple times/day upon the simplest of tasks such as opening up a small pdf file. This happens on both my office computer (brand new iMac with clean Yosemite install) as well as at home (mac mini with current Yosemite), so I'm thinking mine is not a unique situation.
The beauty of it is that upon re-opening Preview, it automatically re-opens the file that caused the crash. When I close the image file, it crashes again - starting an endless cycle. Here's a portion of the output from the crash report:

• Trouble with Preview/Adobe: corrupt Finder cache???

hello!!
I posted this question in the Appleworks forum, and later under Finder and Dock Forum here. I thought that the issue was resolved, but this is not so.
here is the problem.
I prefer Acrobat to Preview, to work on PDF documents. Therefore, I have, on multiple occassions, selected the PDF documents, and "open with" Adobe Acrobat" and "Change ALL".
However, almost every time (but not ALL the time) I log out and come back, the default changes to the Preview. As good as Preview is, the idea that my MacBook Pro is misbehaving is annoying.
Then I did the following.
1. Select on the file such as pdf.
2. Right click and select the command Open with.
3. To change the default application. Select Other...
4. Then select the Adobe application and check the Always open with button.
Even this did not solve the problem. When I log back in, the default application for PDF had changed to Preview Not always however)
Then I was told that I may have a corrupt Finder cache and that I ought to address my question here.
At this point, I was told:
Try using a utility called Yasu to fix the problem. You can download Yasu at http://jimmitchell.org/projects/yasu/
I did so, and for 2-3 days now, there were no problems. And now, all of a sudden, I have the same problem.
I have NOt done anything unusual with my MBP. In fact, last night, a pdf document was opened with Adobe. And then I restarted the MBP now, and, it is all back to Preview.
What ought I do?
Thanks!

Chris:
Sorry! I was away.
Well. i am using Adobe Acrobat 7 pofessional. It had worked fine in my previous MBP that got stolen.
As I said, after having done everything that youhad suggested I failed to get the default on Acrobat, by clicking on the application in the get info panel. The only way to change that was to select change all.
Then I logged out, shut down, and restarted today. Same story. My Pdf defaulthad changed to Preview. In addition, I noted that some of the .doc files are now meing opened with textedit, instead of Word. Even the Word icon had disappeared, but this seem tohave affected only some doc files and notall.
I am clueless as to what to do now!!!
any moer ideas short of reinstalling?
Thanks by the way. You ahev been very kind and helpful in this matter.

• Trouble with Preview not using embedded fonts in a PDF

I have a client I'm working with that is generating PDF reports for various organizations in various languages. They are using an Arial Unicode font but are using different encoding for some of the more unique languages. To ensure the report will be viewable regardless of installed fonts, they are embedding the font.
Most of the languages are showing up fine in preview, but three languages are giving me trouble. Specifically Greek, Russian and Thai which are using encoding EL8MSWIN1253, CP1251, and TH8TISASCII.
Basically the question is whether there is some toggle that will tell Preview to use the embedded font? Or something we can put into the PDF (the pdf is created using FPDF) that will allow a user to know which font/encoding they'll need to install in order to properly view the document? (I'm actually trying to figure that out myself...which font I need to install to get preview to view the document properly).
Thanks in advance for any help.

Actually, I got that example to work... here are the changes
I made...
<mx:htmlText>
You can vary the font
size,
color,
face, or
<font
size="18"color="#FF00FF"face="Times New Roman">any combination
of the three.
</mx:htmlText>
As I said above, I have found errors in the code of the help
docs... this is yet another one of them. Usually its spaces in the
wrong place, or no space at all, or missing ) or ], or a case
sensitivity issue.
If you got your custom font to display, that should work...
but then again.. what should work, doesn't always.

• Anyone having trouble with Preview?

I'm able to create in iBA, however when I try to preview it will load onto my iPad (eventually) but I can't open the preview on my tablet. Anyone else find this issue? Any solutions?

I was able to delete the untitled non-function book preview by entering list view (Bookshelf/Library) and choose Edit (top right). Radio buttons will appear on the left to select individual books to edit/delete. Unhappily, the button for the non-functioning title does not seem to work. BUT, I was able to Select All, un-check all books except the bad title and then the Delete function worked. Another discovery was to exit iBooks, relaunch, go to list view and keep my finger on the bad title (it must be highlighted) and after about 20 seconds, the Delete button appeared (and it worked).
But still, the non-functioning Preview function is a real drag. Very un-Apple. I look forward to a real, working solution.

• Trouble with Preview function- thumbnails

Adobe photoshop elements 9: Problem occurs after downloading my images from my camera's memory card. I have all the thumbnails open & have always right clicked on an individual photo, hit preview & viewed my photos as a slideshow to copy, delete, etc.. The preview function is not working, and had quit working just recently on my Elements 8 before I replaced it with the 9 version. How can I fix this or is there another way to look at my photos full screen, one after another without individually opening each one, then having to go back & start over?

Hi,
If you are opening these files in Organizer, resetting organizer preferences should help. Go to %appdata%\Adobe\Elements Organizer\9.0\Organizer\ on Win or ~\library\Application Support\Adobe\Elements Organizer\9.0\Organizer\ and delete the following files :
psa.prf
status.dat
If that doesn't help, I would suggest repairing and optimizing your catalog.
Thanks

• Hardware Trouble with Preview Application? (Kern_protection_failure)

i was having some software problem some months ago where many applications (photoshop, illustrator, sketchup, safari, mail, preview) were crashing constantly... i took my macbook to the tech guy and he said that i should do "erase and install"... I cleaned the HD, did the e&i process once with tiger, twice with leopard and it seemed to fix most problems with all the apps except Preview... on the third attempt i simply deleted Preview and installed it directly from the leopard disk it worked the first time but the second time it crashed once again... whenever i try to edit a pic and save it, it will crash and report stuff like this on the dialog:

and some other long dialog that i can't understand... i've tried reaching out for help on the boards and apple technicians but they don't seem to know what's wrong... since the erase and install isn't working...
please help ...

Hi Llore_pr!
Sorry to hear you're having issues. Throughout your dealings with other people on this issue has anyone had you reset the PRAM?
[Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238]
This error message looks oddly familiar to something I had seen recently on a buddy's computer with VLC. We "zapped" the PRAM and the problem went away and has yet to rear its ugly head.

• CS5 - Trouble with preview files...

Hi,
when I import footage and drag it to the tl I get this yellow line. After I did some color correction I get a red line. Then I render the tl und, surprise, I get a green line. I close PP and start it again after a while and... there is the red line again - always. The preview files are there in the right folder. So, what is going wrong here? Any ideas?
Thx, Uwe

Where is the surprise in that? That is how it should work.

Don't press the Skip previews button when asked where the preview files are located, or are you using an external? Then make sure that the drive letter remains the same all the time.

• Trouble with Preview and TextEdit

Every time I open a file in either Preview or textEdit, one or two other files open up as well. I don't know whether this is a feature or a bug. This started happening right after I upgraded to Lion.
Anyone know how to make this go away?

Let's try the quick and easy first...
Quit your apps.
On your "Go" menu holding down the option key, choose Library/Preferences
and delete these two files:
com.apple.preview.plist
com.apple.textedit.plist
Then restart.
EDIT: On second thought it may be the Resume feature
http://osxdaily.com/2011/08/01/turn-off-resume-per-app-in-mac-os-x-lion/
You can also unchekmark the resume feature when you log out or Restart.
You can test that right now by going to Apple Menu > Restart and choosing it. It will give you the option of cancelling out or proceeding.

• Trouble with Preview

when opening a Captured File (.png) in Preview 4.0(469) , the 1st time , it is very blurry (sometimes can't make out what is typed. If I open the SAME file a 2nd time , it is sharp. Would anyone have any idea why.

Open the Audio MIDI Setup on the offending computer (the Powerbook).
Set the Audio Output Format to 44100Hz. Quit and restart.
You should also set up a new user account (great for testing things) and try the offending file again.

• Trouble with Preview pdf

When I open pdf documents in Preview 4.2 (that were generated by Acrobat Pro - XP system), some of the elements that were created by the draw/comment tools do not appear. They do show-up if the document is opened in Acrobat Reader 9.
What I really want to be able to do is save pdf files in alternate formats (jpeg, tif, gif etc). Acrobat Reader will not support saving in alternate formats - Preview does convert to alt. formats, but does not show all elements so documents are incomplete - Is there a setting/work around/patch for Preview that allow it to recognize all elements of a pdf document or is there another reader that will save pdfs in alternate formats?.......J Brent

I'm having exactly the same problem! I've tried to alter the preferences without any luck. Sorry I can't help but I feel your pain.
