Trouble with Printers; Could be a network problem?

I have what I think is a pretty unique situation.
I have. . .
(1) a new iMac with Leopard that has a Cannon MP780 plugged in through USB. Printer Sharing, File Sharing, and Screen Sharing are turned on.
(2) a year old MacBook with Leopard that has a Cannon MP170 plugged in through USB. Printer Sharing, File Sharing, and Screen Sharing are turned on.
(3) a Dell PC with Windows XP Home. VNC Server installed. Bonjour Printer wizard installed.
All three are connected to the same router.
The goal: get the PC to print to the MP780 on the iMac because the macbook isn't always home.
The iMac can VNC into the MacBook and the PC, and it can print to the MP170 on the Macbook.
The PC can print to the MP170. When the PC tries to connect to the MP780 it says I "don't have sufficient privileges to access the printer".
Also, the Macbook cannot screen share with the iMac.
So why do you think both the PC and the Macbook are unable to connect to the iMac when the iMac can connect to them? All the sharing options are turned on.

Trouble with 10.3.9: possiblly network or permissions problems?

I'm running OS X 10.3.9 on my iBook G3 (old but still works ) Lately I've had a problem with my entire interface that may be related to file paths, network problems or permissions problems. Whenever I try to open anything on my desktop (including the Main HD or the trash), my iBook tries to connect to its own hard drive through the wireless network in my home. It sometimes successfully connects (to itself) and I can then access the files. This only occurs with things on my desktop (as far as I can tell) and with the Trash Icon in the dock. All apps open fine, but shortcuts on the desktop or anything stored on the desktop initiates a sequence that attempts to connect to the main HD THROUGH the wireless network.
Any and all help is greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance,

Trouble with MacBook Pro finding AirPort networks

I recently bought a new (refurbished) MacBook Pro (15", 1.83GHz), to replace my old iBook, which was one of the early white models, circa 2001.
Everything about my new computer is wonderful, of course, except that every time I boot up, wake from sleep, or turn on the AirPort, it takes up to a full minute for the AirPort to find any open networks. This happens at school (where there are AirPort base stations all over the place), at home (where we have a Belkin router, and several neighbors have others), and at my parents' house (where they have a linksys router). It doesn't seem to matter whether the networks use encryption or not, nor how close or far I am from the nearest router. If I know the name of a nearby open network and type it in, I can get it, usually. On my old iBook, I had a little trouble with some of the networks at school sometimes, but never with this kind of delay across the board, and certainly never at home nor at my parents'.
Also, at home, when the the AirPort finally does find the available networks, it NEVER chooses my router first, even though it's the only one in the neighborhood that I listed under "Preferred Networks."
I've read some similar posts, dealing with problems with accessing encrypted networks, but nothing seemed to address my particular issue. It might be a defect with the AirPort or firmware, but I wanted to check, first.
(Oh, and I'm not a complete newbie, but tech-speak often goes over my head. Please keep it simple.)

This is how I fixed the problem on my MBP.
Go to Macintosh HD > Library > Preferences
Delete the folder SystemConfiguration
Go to System Prefrences > Network > Show+Network Port Configuration. Check Airport and Built-in Ethernet and make sure Airport is on the top of the list.
Reconfigure your wep passwords and it should work. Worked for me. Also, you will have to redo your power settings.

Having trouble with printers

I am having varied problems trying to print to two different HP printers from the PowerBook 64 Aluminum 12-inch.
1) When printing to a Deskjet 6840, the machine recognizes the printer and seems to print okay, except for when the paper comes of the printer there is usually nothing on it. Sometimes It will get a truncated image that prints if I have it set to print in color. If I choose grayscale I get nothing. Both ink crtridges are new.
I have reinstalled new printer cartridges (black and color) to no avail. I also have tried to open the Utilities window in the Print monitor but it won't launch. It starts to launch then quits. So I can't clean the jets, check ink levels etc.
2) When trying to print to a photosmart 7350, it won't let me add the printer to the list of printers. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the printer software several times.
Any suggestions will be appreciated.

you use the object picker to select the groups? (AKA are they resolved
to SIDs in the ILT view?)

Trouble with wired and wireless home network

I recently installed a WTR54GS with my desktop wired to it and my laptop wireless. My laptop can get to the internet (router is attached to a cable modem) but it can not see shared files on the desktop or the printer that is attached to the desktop. However, the desktop can see the shared file folder on the laptop. I can not seem to correct this. Latest error message I got was Microsoft 871122, something about wireless zero configuration. I'm about ready to go back to my old USR router that worked fine, except that it lost its IP address periodically. Any advice?

It could be a bunch of things. I am guessing you added the wireless laptop after the desk top. The best place to start is on your desktop. Right click on your shared folder. From the dropdown menu select sharing and security. From there it gives you several options as well as more info...including your firewall settings. Do the same thing on your desktop using Control Panal and the printers and fax icon right click on your printer. You might also check to see if your LAN or Worgroup match between the two puters. You can make it work no matter, but might find it easier if they are the same. Do this by right clicking on My Computer, choose properties on the dropdown choose the computer name tab. It will give you an option to change the settings...That is a basic start...the wireless 0 connection error your are getting implies that you let microsoft setup on your wireless adapter settings on your laptop. This can be disabled. I avoid using the micorsoft stuff for setup for your wireless adapter. Just my prefrence. That is with one exception and unless you are Windows Registry Hexpert, I won.t get into that.
Anyway a possiable start.

I am having trouble with iTunes (possible Quartz Composer Visualizer problem) but have no idea how to fix it.

I tried to use my iTunes but the icon didn't show up and instead I get a folder. The folder is titled TunesApp and in it is another folder called Contents. Contents contains: _CodeSignature, Frameworks, Info.plist, MacOS, PkgInfo, Resources, and version.plist. In the folder MacOS is my iTunes and I can use it, but I get this message:

I can only use my iTunes as long as I keep the message open. When I close the message it tells me: "Closing this window will terminate the running processes: login, bash, iTunes." I have no idea what is going on with it as it was working not too long ago. I do not think I updated it recently but I could be wrong. Any help would be much appreciated.

Sounds like your computer is having additional issues. I suggest taking it to your nearest Apple Store.

Multiple printers on the same network problem

I have 2 HP OJ Pro 8600 printers and one HP OJ Pro 8500 Plus printer on the same network. My question is whether it is possible to change the network name of these printers so that it is easier to identify them.
The printers are in three different buildings so there is little stress to run around to find out where the print comes.

If all the printers are on the same network you won't be able to change the network name on the printer.
You can change the name of the printer though on each computer. Depending on the operating system you are using, go to the printers window, right click and rename. Example Office1, Office 2.
If the option isn't available you can go to the printer window and add a printer and change the printer name through the wizard.

Trouble with connecting 6280 printer to network

I am operating two systems (PC with Vista and MacBook Pro with OS X version 10.5.8). My printer is the C6280 All-in-One and it is hooked up to a router. My PC recognizes the printer just fine, but I cannot get my MacBook to find it. I have gone through the setup routine many times using the CD provided by HP, have uninstalled the software and installed again. I have rebooted every device several times. I have even manually put in the IP address of the printer. Still nothing. During the downloading of HP software I get an error message saying the HPIO Trap Monitor failed but it does it every time so I finally tried ignore and went on. The setup just doesn't complete itself and no printer is located. Any ideas?

First, what router and ISP are you using?
Second, can you type the printer's IP address into your Mac's internet browser to see the printer? (get the IP by printing a Network Config Page from the front panel of the printer).
Finally, try a printing system reset:
- Sys Prefs, Print & Fax
- Right (control) click the print queue area and select Reset Printing System.
- Select the plus sign to re-add it. Look for the printer, select it and wait until the "Add" button becomes available. Click it.

Having trouble with extending an Apple wireless network with a AirPort Express

Trying to extend the range of my AirExtreme with a AirExpress:
I get stuck when the AirPort Utility ask is I'm sure I want to switch networks. if I select switch I loose the AirExtreme. If I select don't switch it take me back to the beginning. Any help will be appreciated.

You have to "switch" networks to be able to pick up the signal from the Express and configure it with new settings.
Once the Express is configured it will become part your existing network when you see a green light.
Then, switch back to your regular wireless network on your Mac and everything will be on the same network

Troubles with remote installation on older macbook- problem arises when I restart computer while holding down option key

I've got remote disk sharing set up so I can upgrade my operating system from my desktop using snow leopard CD. My Macbook is able to read disk remotely and all goes well following directions for installation until I am supposed to hold down option key while restarting computer. When I do this, only my hard drive is an option for start up, not the hard drive and the disk as it shows in the instructions and pop up menu for start up. Why? What am I doing wrong with the start up? Also, it says I should be able to choose the Airport network, but my computer automatically connects and anyways, that is also not an option from the pop up menu (to choose a network and enter password), that pop up menu section doesn't show up at all, it goes right to choosing disc icon where only mac hard drive, not mac os x install, is an option. Does this make sense? I'm giving up for now.

The only known way to make it work on an external drive is by first installing Windows onto an internal drive, then cloning the install to an external Thunderbolt drive. Thunderbolt is seen as an extension of the internal bus, so Windows doesn't see it as an external device.

HP 5530 Envy with error code B814E90A (probably network problem)

Bought this printer last January.Since a week it has the following problems:- makes a lot of noise during start-up (like something is a bit stuck)- tells me that I closed the printer incorrectly- gives the error code B814E90A- tells me that there's an error- I'm not able to use any button on the front/touchscreen of the printerAt a certain moment the printer told me it couldn't connect to the network. I tried to re-register, but kept returning in the loop mentioned above.I ran the printer-reset: didn't help. Today I took the printer to the shop where I bought it. The problems didn't occur there and the guy in the shop was able to connect the printer to the shops network. He advised me to reconnect the printer to my home network, and to ask the HP helpdesk about the error code, that he didn't know. As soon as I returned home and try to reconnnect the exact same loop was there again. The printer refused to reconnect to the network. I ran the Print and Scan doctor, installed new drivers, but the programmes tell me all that the connection fails.I cannot do anything on the printer to make it reconnect to the network again, reset those settings or ..... I cant use some of my software programs now because they were for MAC but power based. I wish Apple said that before taking my money. I am unemployed and cant go out and buy all new software.
In addition Lion is not recognizing my usual USB2 cables that always used to work for iPhone charging purposes - they work to connect the iPhone to the computer - and see the iPhone in iTunes, but it wont let me charge the iPhone, the iPhone gives the error message something like charging not supported with this .....

Having trouble with Netflix, could it be the processor?

So, yet again, I am asking for info about this 2005 Mac Mini that we were given. We have been trying to get it up to date so we can watch netflix, and I just upgraded the memory to 1GB, but it still won't play streaming Netflix. The only thing I can isolate is that it requires an Intel based processor, and according to the computer, ours is 1.42 GHz PowerPC G4. I really have no clue what that means, but I'm guessing it is not an Intel based processor. My question is, can the processor be changed to this intel based one, and how the heck do I do this? I'm getting ready to smash this thing into tiny little pieces if I can't figure out what the problem is.... PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!

No need to smash the thing. If it's working, sell it on eBay or Craigslist or where ever. Then use the funds to buy a new Mac. Or donate to a school or charity and get a tax credit (if applicable to you.)

Trouble with 3 ATV to connect to iTunes in one WiFi / LAN

I've trouble with my ATVs in my network. I have 1 3Gen. ATV connected via LAN to iTunes on iMac and 2 2Gen. ATVs via WiFi. The problem I am facing is, if I am connected with two of them to my iTunes Library the third can't even the others ( which have been conneted) are off. If I restart iTunes, I can connect again two of them and the third (doesn't matter which one) cannot. So I can circle arround which one gets connected but it is not very satisfying.
My network is setup on two Airport express and a TC 2Gen to cover the whole house. As I stated above, the ATV 3Gen is connected via Lan, and the other two via WLAN?
Any idea what I've made wrong, or what to do to find the problem?

Until the MacBook Air was released and supported in 10.5, the Mac did not consider USB to be a valid Networking Protocol. So set the Mac with USB solutions aside.
To connect computer-to-computer, you typically need to be using an Ethernet crossover cable. Assigning the same address to two Ethernet devices is never the solution -- it gives a Network Conflict, just as you said.
If your Windows box has some mechanism for Sharing its WiFi connection over Ethernet, you would have to follow its rules. Whether that means Manually assigning an Ethernet Address in the same range or the PC will provide the Address, I do not know.
Best success may be running an Ethernet cable to your Wired/Wireless Base Station, or using a "gaming adapter" (Ethernet-to-Wireless no drivers required) connected to the Mac's Ethernet port to give it WiFi access. What is your Base Station {Cable, DSL, FIOS, Other} ? Ethernet cables can be up to 100 meters (an American Football Field). Often the Base Station can be moved closer for more convenience.

Check File > Document Settings > Raster Effects
Settings.
The default is 72 dpi which is good enough for screen. 300
dpi is for print (press) but it may make screen redraw very slow.
Note that raster effects do not work well, or at all, in
FreeHand, especially with cmyk colors. And yes, most of the effects
will blur the object (!?!).
Probably the best way to create these effects is to use
Phothosop. Also in Illustrator the raster effects do work.
