Trouble with second monitor display?

I bought an external monitor for my mbp..
I do NOT have it on mirror display. However, I have my external monitor as my main monitor, with the dock dragged over to this screen as well. It's connected via HDMI. This is the problem I'm running into:
When I maximize a screen on the external monitor, it maximizes as it should. When that happens, my mbp screen turns to that thatched-looking grey screen. If I use my gestures on my wireless trackpad to swipe back, the external monitor will go back to it's desktop in order for the mbp screen to have a desktop photo on it. Basically, I can't see two different things at once with having dual monitors..
If I drag something over to my mbp screen, I have to be at the desktop on my external monitor in order to do so, and when I do, the external monitor goes to that thatched-looking grey screen. So again, I really can't look at two things at once when maximizing aplications.
the only pain in the arse temporary thing I'm doign right now is just draging the margins to fit the dimensions of the screen, and not the 'double arrow' icon in the top right to maximize it.. and try to juggle btwn different windows I open that way.
Huge pain.. not as efficient and I planned on.. Please help me with this issue!
Thanks in advance! Jon

Hi Joe,
In System Preferences, open the Display settings. Go to arrangement from the top of the little window. You will see the 2 small blue rectangles for your screens. You can arrange them to resemble your screen arrangement to - for example - move the mouse arrow from screen to screen in a straight line.
And you can also pick up the little white bar on top of the smaller screen and drag it over to the bigger blue rectangle.
This should move your main screen controls (menu bar and dock) over to the external display.
Alternatively - connect your external screen. Put your MacBook Pro to sleep. Close the lid and wake it up again. With the lid closed it should recognise the external display as the main screen.
hope this works for you.
Stefan.

  • Mountin Lion has trouble with external monitors

Not so much a question as a shout-out. Since going to Mountain Lion, my pretty new (February this year) MacBook has been having no end of trouble with external monitors. I use it a lot with the clamshell closed with two different external monitors of two different sizes, one at home, one at work. It sometimes thinks the one is the other, or if I unplug the monitor in sleep, when I later open the clamshell, the screen stays black and I have to force a reboot with the power button. Never had these problems with exactly the same set-up in Lion. Sometimes it also refuses to find a connected monitor or projector, I have to pull the dangle and put it in again.

If memory serves, one of the 'flaws' with BM's hardware is that it will not convert on-the-fly.  So if your sequence doesn't match what the TV is accepting, you get black.
For example, my TV will not accept 1080p, only 1080i, so working in a 1080p sequence would produce no image for me as the BM will only output exactly what's in the sequence, it can't convert my 1080p/24 sequence into 1080i/30 for output.
Now I'd expect your TV would have no trouble accepting a 720p signal but, maybe the above data will lead you down a path of investigation.

  • Extending display with second monitor

I am trying to add a second monitor to expand my desktop area. I routinely do this with my G5 laptop by simply plugging in a second monitor, clicking on DISPLAY in SYSTEM PREFS, clicking ARRANGEMENT, and clicking off MIRROR DISPLAYS.
With the iMAC G5 ARRANGEMENT does not appear as an option and default seems to be mirror. Any way to make this work?

This is an update to my previous post. I searched on Google about this problem and found an answer -- an old Macworld article:
    http://www.macworld.com/article/39969/2004/10/imacscreenspanning.html
It describes a freeware program called Screen Spanning Doctor. I printed out the page and followed the instructions. It worked! I now have a Samsung SyncMaster 930B set at 1280 x 1024 and my iMac G5 set at 1440 x 900 (maximums for both) and They are not mirrored; the Samsung monitor extends the desktop of my iMac G5. I couldn't be happier.
Just in case Screen Spanning Doctor does not work for you, be sure to print out this Apple support document, Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379?viewlocale=en_US
You can never be too careful. I believe what this will do is undo whatever changes Screen Spanning Doctor does. Per the Readme:
"This program is intended to unlock some features of the graphics hardware in some Macs (iBook, iMac, eMac but not for all models - you can find a complete list at my website http://macparts.de/ibook). On supported Macs it will allow the use of an extended desktop where usually only mirrored mode is available. This enables you to use an external display to extend your workspace. It will also unlock additional resolutions for the external display making it possible to driver high-resolution screens. This is especially nice if you want to use an LCD panel that has a higher native resolution than the 1024*768 of the internal display. After you apply the patch you should see an additional tab in the displays prYou will only see this tab if you have at least the monitor adapter plugged in."
Good luck! (I'm going to make a donation to macparts.de, which created this program. I figure it's worth $19 -- what I paid for the VGA display adapter at the Apple Store.

  • Trouble connecting second monitor (MBP late 2011)

Hi guys! I'm Nico and as you can see from the title i'm having problems connecting a second monitor to my macbook pro late 2011.
I have a mini display port to hdmi adapter that works perfectly fine (I use it with my HDTV), and because I also have an Asus external 22" monitor I bought a hdmi/vga cable
    (http://cgi.ebay.it/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=171010746825#ht_2700wt_1144)
so I could use my mini display port to hdmi adapter without buying another adapter.
    This is what I do:
1- connect the vga cable to the Asus monitor
2- connect the other end of the cable (hdmi) to the mini display port to hdmi adapter
3- connect the mini display port to hdmi adapter to my macbook pro
But nothing works! My Mac is plugged to the power as well. I've tried to check in the monitor setting but nothing shows up, and even doing "detect display" still nothing works.
I've also tried to reset the pram. But without luck.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Nico

    Any idea guys?

  • Second monitor displays weird colors

    Hi there,
Yesterday I bought a Displayport to HDMI adapter (Mini DisplayPort Male - HDMI female) for my MacBook Pro 15" (Late 2011 version). I use this to connect my MacBook Pro to my Philips 32" television. Everything has been set up (I've adjusted the resolution of the TV to 1080p and put my refresh rate to 50 hz since my TV doesn't support 60 hz). But once in every 5 - 15 minutes or so, my screen turns green for a brief second and suddenly my background or whatever is on my second monitor turns in to weird colors. Sometimes it takes about 2 or 3 seconds and it switches back to how it normally was, but sometimes it takes way longer. I don't mirror my screen, I use it as a second display. But I can't figure out why the screen it switching betweens there colors and don't know how to fix it. I've looked it up on the internet, but couldn't find anything useful. So I hope you guys could help me with this.
    Thanks in advance.

    Bump.

  • MB 13 aluminum with XP Pro, computer locks with second monitor attached

I have a new macbook 13 unibody with windows XP pro, SP 3 installed. When i use an external monitor in dualview, the computer hard locks after the computer is left idle for a while - I think when power management tells the screen to shut off. The computer works fine without a second monitor in use. Using the bootcamp version of the video driver (177). Any suggestions?

There is a possibility that all you need to do is go into the display properties of the HP and have it look for the adapter.
First the model number of the HP and then the Windows version that is installed, please.

  • Previewing with second monitor

all I want to do is burn video to dvd. I want to make sure that the media is within the title action safe area. I made a video for my girl and it looked fine in the safe area on my lcd monitor but when I played in on my HD tv it was beyond the safe area. I've been looking at Blackmagic Intensity Pro
HDMI Capture Card and DeckLink SDI but am at a loss when it comes to the second monitor.
    my questions are:
what would be the most budget minded setup to do this?
can I hook up a regular hd tv in order to preview?
using after effects for the edits

  • No audio when with second monitor attached and using Extend, Duplicate,or Second Screen Only modes

When I attached a second monitor via HDMI cable and try to use Duplicate, Extend, or Second Screen only display modes, I can get the video to display and run but I get no audio unless I set the notebook display settings to P/C Only mode.  I really want to use the second screen for PowerPoint/Presenter View and play a embedded video (along with the sound).  Even if I try to play a YouTube video I can only get audio when in P/C Screen Only mode.  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

  • Problems with second monitor

    Hi all,
I have a MBP described bellow, and I have a problem, started after I changed the background image (I don't know if its had to do) to change each 15 minutes.
After this change, the second monitor started to be scratched, unreadable and freezing my MBP. Only solution was disconnect the mini port and force shutdown the machine. I tried this actions some times, but now, MBP doesn't recognize mini port any more. What might be happening?

  • Mac Pro Freezes on Startup with Second Monitor Connected

I have a base model Mac Pro with OS X Mavericks that is fully updated. When the computer boots, if my second monitor is connected, it begins to load the login screen and freezes before it has fully loaded. The second monitor is mostly black with a few blocks of color instead of the solid grey it should be. If I disconnect the second monitor and reboot the machine, it starts up fine and the second monitor can be connected without issue anytime after the login screen has fully loaded.
I am using two identical Asus monitors with Thunderbolt to DVI adapters.
Does anyone have an idea as to why this is occurring? Thank you in advance for your assistance.

I have the same problem with both Mac Pro (Office and Home)
The office's one have 2 Dell P2412H monitors with DVI adapter
The home's one have 2 Samsung 27" monitors width HDMI connections
Both have OS X Mavericks (10.9.4)
If i don't unplug a monitor, the OS X when have to start the graphics for the login freeze

  • Color shift with second monitor using develop module

LR 4.1 RC2, OSX 10.6.8 - when I'm trying to use the develop module with my second monitor, the image initially looks accurate. After a second or two and before any edits have been applied, the images desaturate and look very flat. Images viewed with the second monitor in Library module look great. I can't figure out what is happening and am wondering if any others are experiencing this. Thanks.

Will be fixed in 4.1 final.

  • AE CC loses connection with second monitor and audio mixer (BLACKMAGIC) when switching to desktop

    specifications:
    Mac OsX 10.7.5
AE cc (part of creative cloud, up-to-date) NOT TRIAL VERSION
software for connecting monitor and adui mix panel: Blackmagic Desktop Video 10.0
second monitor: Sony Trimaster EL PVM 2541
audio mix panel: Behringer Xenyx x1204USB audio mixer
Blackmagic connects the Sony screen + Behringer Xenyx x1204USB audio mixer to the mac computer.
    the problem:
When working in after effects, we link the program to show the video preview on the second screen (the sony one)
While the work area is still visible on the Mac screen.
The audio is also regulated through Blackmagic so we can mix on the xenyx mix panel.
Everything works fine as long as we stay in after effects.
If, for a brief moment, even a second, we swhitch to the desktop, or an other program (internet, acrobat reader, etc) After effects looses the connection to Blackmagic (forgets it exists). So we suddenly have no audio, or no longer a seperate video preview image.
The option to select Blackmagic in the dropdown menu is also gone.
If we restart After effects though, it's connected again.
    Any ideas?
I added two screenshots to clarify.
The screenshots is when it does work, and after effects still recognizes blackmagic.
    Cheers,
    Andreas

When this happens, open Activity Monitor. Is Adobe QT32 Server running? That is required for QuickTime video preview. If it is not running, this is the troubleshooting you want to do:
    http://blogs.adobe.com/aftereffects/2011/02/troubleshooting-quicktime-errors-with-after-ef fects.html
In the next update to After Effects CC, the old QuickTime video preview (on Mac; DirectShow video preview on Windows) is being replaced by Mercury Transmit:

  • BootCamp Windows7 and second Monitor display issues

I'm running BootCamp Windows7 on a 2010 15in MacBookPro. While my OSX side recognizes & displays to my ASUS VS238H-P monitor, the Windows7 won't output an image. The monitor is connected by a HDMI Cable.I have used http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?p=8596214 to get the right driver and thus monitor recognition form the control panel.  At this point the system says it recognizes the monitor, give me all the normal display option for outputing an image, but the monitor says it is recieving no signal.  Can anyone help me with this? I've seen alot of simmilar issues as I've looked for answers but nothing that directly addresses this.

  • Trouble with fuzzy external display?

I have a 13" Late 2012 Macbook Pro, and a Samsung E2420L Monitor, which I have used in the past with no problem. But now, when I hook it up, the pixels on the screen are very jittery. When I change the display settings, the only one that doesn't make the pixels jitter is 720p, but it isn't very good quality. After hooking it up to a windows laptop, it worked fine in 1080p, so I know it's my mac. Any suggestions?

Could be the computer may need to be inspected and a full diagnostic run to see
if there may be an issue relating to the hardware inside. If there is no external
adapter in use between the computer and the display, and the other Mac tested
with the display does not exhibit similar issues, and is of similar build vintage, an
issue may exist and it could be a symptom of hardware failure.
An Apple specialist or perhaps Apple Store genius bar could run some testing to
see what is behind this matter; with an appointment one or another could help
at least to learn of a probable cause and a path to a cure.
