Trouble with second user account

I'm using migration assistant to move data from a pc to my new iMac. Everything worked fine for my files and I was able to access them with no problems. I am now trying to get my wife's files moved and am running into problems. I'll try to explain.
I log onto the PC with my wife's account and run migration assistant. On the Mac, I'm still logged on as myself since my wife does not have an account yet. Everything transfers fine and is now on the Mac and an account has been set up for her. The problem is that she cannot log in. When I go into the Users & Groups to change her password, I am not able to do so. When she tries logging on, she is prompted to reset the password but is not able to do so.
So, all of the information is on the new Mac, a user account has been created and she can't log on.
I also tried setting up the account first, before using Migration Assistant but then during the process a message comes up that says the user name is already being used and to select another.
Very confused and frustrated at this point. All of the help documentation on the Mac has been useless. I'm hoping someone from the community can help out before I give up and go back to the PC.

I called support and got walked through the process and am now all set. Kind of a pain and something to do with Migration Assistant.

  • Having trouble with multiple user accounts

I am still getting used to Aperture and am having trouble with multiple user accounts on my Mac.
My wife and I have separate accounts on our Mac, and both have Administrator rights. We keep our Aperture library in the "Shared" folder, and I have made sure that both she and I have read/write capabilities on the Aperture library.
However, she has difficulty creating new projects, saving data, and viewing thumbnails in Aperture. Whenever she creates a project, it does not save into Aperture, and cannot be viewed by any user. In addition, changes she makes to photos do not save. She also cannot view thumbnails of any photos (although she can see the photos in the viewer).
Are there any changes I need to make to the user accounts so she can have all these capabilities?
    Many Thanks.

Rather than having the Aperture library reside in the shared folder, keep it within a folder residing at the top level of your mac, eg.
I actually keep mine on one of my RAID disks.

  • "Bad request" errors in Firefox with second user account

Yesterday, I set up a second user account for my husband to use. Everything seems to work fine with one annoying exception. When Firefox 3 is used as the browser under the new user account, I get frequent "Bad Request" errors with various web mail programs (MobileMe, GMail, Earthlink's web mail).
This does not happen when the same Firefox 3 is used under my original user account. It also does not happen when performing the same functions with Safari under the new user account. It also doesn't seem to matter whether Fast User Switching is enabled or disabled.
I have tried clearing caches, deleting cookies, deleting preferences etc. in the second user's Firefox, all to no avail. Anyone have any other ideas?
I guess one thing I'm a little unclear about... is the second user actually using the same Firefox app as the first user? If so, would there be a way to install a 2nd Firefox app that would only be for the second user? I'm just thinking maybe there is some kind of conflict going on?
Any thoughts or help out there much appreciated!

I think I figured it out. I found an article online that said if you have Parental Controls enabled on an account (which I did on the second user account), it will not allow Firefox to write cookies, thus causing the "bad request" errors.
This is not exactly true, as Firefox under the new user DID seem to be writing cookies just fine. However, when I disabled Parental Controls on the account, suddenly the errors went away. So, it doesn't have to do with cookies, but there is something about having Parental Controls turned on that can cause these errors.

  • Connection to iTunes fails with second user account

    Hi there!
For some weeks now I am experiencing Problems connecting the iTunes of a Second User to Apple TV. I keep getting the error message that the connection failed and I should check if the iTunes is in the same network. Dumb message since one second before I selected the iTunes library of the second user in the list on Apple TV and before that I watched content from the iTunes library of the first user without any problems. So it is not the network connection.
This error can be easily reproduced:
Set up multiple user accounts on Mac
Set up home sharing on Apple Tv and all iTunes of them user accounts
    Restart all to beginn test
    Open iTunes of any user
Access content on Apple TV without problems
Keep first user logged in and iTunes running while switching to second user on Mac
    Open iTunes of second user
Second library will show up on Apple Tv
Try access second users library - error message will be shown
First iTunes library still works fine
Close first users iTunes and error will stay
Close all iTunes and restart Apple Tv
First iTunes open will work - any second will not
    System:
MacOS 10.7.5, iTunes 10.7 (21), Apple Tv 2 with OS 5.1 (5201), network via Ethernet cable to Time Capsule router
Thanks for any tips to get rid of this error!
    Cheers!
    Gerd

    Hi all!
Still the same, very reproduceable problem? No solution anyone?
Upgraded to latest OS on ATV2 (5.2.1) and iMac and iTunes (11.0.2). No result. Obviously this issue is being ignored by apple techs or it is really just me having this problem.
    Thanks for any help!

  • Problem with second user account sharing one iTunes library

I have an iTunes library that is outside my Home folder that I am sharing between two users. One account functions flawlessly. All the songs are there. Everything is organized into folders by iTunes. iTunes Match is working as it should and all files have been downloaded from the cloud.
I have tried everything to get the second account to work as the other. I have used Apple's instructions to reimport the xml file. I have even recreated that users iTunes account from scratch. But when I go to preferences and point that account to the shared iTunes library the new account wants to copy the files or re-download the music and in both cases making duplicates in the library.
    Looking for help.

So I have both accounts now working... sort of. The problem is that the common iTunes Media folder they share does not contain the iTunes Library files (.itl and .xml). Those files are still in each account's Home folder iTunes Media folder. I can see this will be a problem keeping the shared iTunes Media folder happy.
I'm not sure how I got things to this point but I do want to correct it.
Can can I copy one of the account's iTunes Library files to the shared iTunes Media folder?

  • Types and graphics displayed incorrect in Safari with a second User account

With my own user account (Admin) Safari works very well. With the second user account I have problems to display Websites correctly. They are only displayed in capital letters and graphics are not loaded. At first I was thinking it depends on the administration authorization or a Java Update. But either doesn't change anything.
In the meantime I install Firefox 3.0 and the same problem...
Please help me - it is such %*#
    Thank you very much!

Place this folder with Word documents located in your Home folder/directory in the Shared folder for your user account at Home > Shared and this employee can do the same when wanting to share a folder or documents with you.
After doing so, this folder with Word documents will be available in this user's Shared folder when the user logs in to their account.
The Shared and Public folders let you share files with other people.
The Shared folder is located in the Users folder on your hard disk. You can use it to share files with other users on your computer. The Shared folder is set up with Read & Write permissions so that all users can open the files in this folder and copy files to the folder.
Use your personal Public folder inside your home folder to share files with other people on the network. To share information in your Public folder, you must turn on Personal File Sharing in the Sharing pane of System Preferences. Your Public folder is set up with "Read only" permissions that allow others to see and copy its contents, but not change the content.
Your Public folder also contains a Drop Box folder, which is set up so other people can copy files to your Drop Box, but they cannot see its contents.

Used Migration Assistant to import PC files. It created second user account that won't sync with iPad.  How do I merge accounts?

It's next to impossible to fully merge two accounts on a Mac easily.
This being said, though, please take a look at "The Great Pondini's" site where this specific issue is addressed.  There should be information here you can use to get things sorted out.

  • Why won't garageband work for second user account

I have recently had new hard drive installed in my iMac, after a lot of time recovering everything I have my main (admin) user account working fine, including garageband 11 working fine after having to go through the unistall and delete all the library files work around. But now when I add a second user account for my kids, i get the same problem I had earlier. It shouldn't be the same thing because all of those files were deleted. I have cleared out the lirary files in the ~user library as well just in case but still the same issue. I get the warning that garageband needs to download files to work, it seemingly downloads all the files, then installs them, gets to 100% installed and then crashes.

. I get the warning that garageband needs to download files to work, it seemingly downloads all the files, then installs them, gets to 100% installed and then crashes.
This looks like GarageBand is trying to install the additional content - loops, instruments - for  the new users all over again as well. This should not happen. All loops and instruments should have been installed in the system library for all users and not in your user library for you alone. Or there may be a permissions problem with the system library. Did you install all additional contents from an administrator account or a regular user account without administrator privileges?

  • Interface slow/buggy with two user accounts?

I've recently created a second user account on my 2009 27" iMac and ever since I've been having weird things happening, such as flash videos in safari becoming unresponsive (literally frozen) untill I move the safari window, which gets the video to play for a few more seconds, then it freezes again... Also, GarageBand does the same thing, when I press play I hear my music, but the play head freezes in place after a few seconds and the only way to get it to move again is to jiggle the GarageBand window, switch to another Space and switch back or press CMD ALT ESC to bring up the force quit menu (not actually force quitting the application, just the action of bringing up the menu is enough to get GarageBand to refresh and start playing again...). These methods also work with safari.
Quitting and reopening the applications doesn't fix the problem and restarting the computer brings temporary relief, but it always comes back. Sometimes safari is open on both user accounts, that might be causing the problem, I'm not sure. I do know that it started at the same time I created a second account.
So whats going on? I'm thinking it's maybe a graphical issue? I've tried doing a permissions and disk repair and while my hard drive was found corrupt, the repair didn't seem to make a difference. Is my only option here to delete the second account? Would that even work? Or is a trip to the apple store in order? I'm hoping someone can shed some light on this issue since ive never come across a bug in OSX that I couldn't fix myself!
    Thanks

A trip might be in order but not yet. First run software update, if your profile is correct you're a version behind as 10.6.8 is current, there may neither updates as well. Second reset the SMC and pram
    To reset the SMC
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
    To reset PRAM/NVRAM
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Printing Error with second user.

    Thanks in advance everyone.
Here is my issue, I have an iBook G4 running 10.3.9 connected to a network printer with two user accounts, The first user account works fine and can print, however the second account cannot. It gives me the "Error Printing" message which is really helpful.
I have tried re-adding the printer, and deleting com.apple.pint... preferences files, and repairing the permissions.
    Any insight would be wonderful.
    Thanks,
    Paul

In the second account ~/Library/Printers select the printer and Command + i. to open Get Info and check the *Ownership and permissions* down the bottom, to see if the second user can read and write to that printer.

  • Word, pdf, iPhoto email, don't work on one user account but work on second user account

I have MacBook Pro running 10.7.  In my main user account I've recently had major issues with several applications.  Word quits on startup, pdf files quit on startup, the latest iPhoto application quits when attemping to send email with photos from iPhoto.
I set up a second user account and all the issues went away.  Can anyone explain why such bugs are present in one user account by not the more recent one?
    Thanks

    In your wife's account:
Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    *What's the plist file?*
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.

  • CS2 Problems with multiple user accounts on 1 machine

I have been having this problem since I first installed CS2 in my Mac lab. I have 8 G5's and I have loaded the exact same software (all licensed of course) on all 8 machines, in the same order. The problem occurs when trying to use CS2 in a second user account on the machines.
All software works fine for the original admin account. Then when I try to open and use in a second account I get crashes and errors, nothing consistent. AND some computers work just fine. HUH? I have called Apple and they suggested repairing permissions, that doesn't work.
I have tried uninstall and reinstall. I have tried making the second user an admin user. I have tried 2nd and 3rd users. I have tried a total system reinstall. I have tried changing the order in which I install. I have tried installing both before and after creation of the second account.
It doesn't seem to matter. On some machines it works, on others it doesn't. The only account the software will work in is the original user account.
The reason this matters is it is a student lab. I have implemented a server and students can't use the software through their server accounts either. Currently the server is a 40lb paperweight until this problem is fixed.
    Any clue?
Thanks for any help you can give me.
    Amy O.

This has to do with permissions in the non admin accounts. A solution was posted a while back you could do a search or somebody will pop in with the solution soon.

  • Second user account crashes the system?

I'm really stumped; after enduring the migration assistant screw up and crash the newly installed Snow Leopard system on my macbook pro...THREE TIMES and finally ferrying all the documents and apps manually to my primary (home) account, I created a second user account to use for my office work. The home account seems to work fine, but when I logout and try to access the new, empty office account, it's like opening the door and stepping into blank space; all I get is the pink and blue astral plane and the spinning beachball of death!! The only solution is to press the on off button and reboot.
What do I do? This seems to be a different problem from the guest account accidentally wiping the hard drive clean? HEEELLLP!! I can't work until I can get my computer up!

Thanks VK and KT for the replies. I''ve done it both ways: I've deleted the second account and recreated it with a new name...still doesn't work. Changed the 2nd account from a Admin account to Standard, and that didn't work. AND I've tried logging out of one and directly into the other, and when that didn't work (because the system crashed) I started up from scratch and went directly to the second user account... and the same thing happened. LOL at least it's consistent <rueful grin>

  • Second user account not shown on OS X boot

I have created a second user account on my mac. Why is this account is not shown on initial log-in screen?
My user account (admin) and Guest account are shown, second user account (standard) is not shown.
How can I allow the second account to be shown?
    Cheers,
    Rob

Is there a way to remove the data from the old "student" account and then add it back in after creating a new "student" account?
    Might see if these help...
    Open the terminal and type:
    nireport / /users name uid | grep "5[0123456789][0123456789]"
This should report all users that are in the 500+ range for the user ID. User accounts generally start at 501, and work up, so look at the list returned, and pick the next available number to assign to the new user you are creating. You will use it in place of the uid 555 below.
(Above didn't work in 10.5.8, sorry)

  • Time machine for second user account erases other backups

I have a system drive and one other drive (two partitions: Files and Movies) on my iMac, and have been using Time Machine to back up these three drives.
Yesterday I created a second user account, but when logged in to that account Time Machine started to back up, it erased the previous backups and started from scratch, just backing up the system drive.
Can anyone tell me how to avoid this happening please?

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message. Clear the text field and scroll back in the log to that time. Post the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear.
Post the log text, please, not a screenshot. If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into a message.
Some personal information, such as the names of your files, may be included — edit that out, too, but don’t remove the context.
