Trouble with start-up

Until yesterday my PowerBook was performing flawlessly, then when I tried to boot up this morning it it didnt. It made the power-on "dong" noise, went to the gray screen with the apple in the middle then to a black screen with a command prompt. The heading on the command line was sh3-# or something like that. I tried some commands like "exit" and "help" but nothing would get it to boot. Any ideas on what could be wrong?

Hi Andrew;
Anything is possible always.
It is always better to have a backup when using utilities to repair your system and not need them then to not have one and need it. With that reason it is always recommended to backup before you repair just in case.
