Trouble with the Wi-Fi

For Christmas, I received a 3rd gen iPod touch brand new and it started having major issues with the Wi-Fi about two weeks afterwards. Today I exchanged it for another one at the store it was bought at and the new one is having even more issues, right out of the package.
When I try connecting to my home network, it will connect and stay connected (complete with the little wi-fi symbol at the top of the screen) but only for around 8 seconds then it will disconnect, removing that little symbol, regardless of me trying to use the connection with an app or otherwise.
When I go into the settings under wi-fi, the network shows up and has a check mark to the left of the network name, but still has no working communication with anything.
The only way I can get it to connect and work properly again is to tap the 'Renew Lease' button but then it will disconnect every time about 8 seconds after I do. But this only makes it connect about a third of the time and the rest of the time I try, it will do absolutely nothing.
It will connect to my network eventually but the time it takes can be from 30 seconds to half an hour.
I've tried resetting the connection data, I've turned it completely off then back on.
The only way I can get it to work correctly and consistently is I wait until it connects and works right and I keep using the connection, not letting it disconnect at all. This means I can't lock it or leave it alone, not playing music.
The first one I had(the one I received at Christmas) had the same problem but it wouldn't work correctly with any network, public or private.
If there's something that might help in solving this issue that I didn't cover, please ask and I will answer to the best of my knowledge.
It has not worked right since I got it out of the package and the I was really hoping someone could suggest something that might make it work properly.

Did you ever consider that this might be a network/router problem and not your touch?
The easy things first...
1. Start with your router - unplug the power and let it sit for 30 seconds. Plug it back in and when it is done restarting, try your touch again.
2. Review your network setup. Are you using WEP? What is the Lease Time set to (should be forever). Is newer firmware available for the router?
If there is a newer version of the firmware for that router, download and install it before you go any further.
Write back if you still have problems.
