Trouble with Time Capsule & Mountain Lion - unexpected error occurr when setting up connection to an existing network

Hi,
My TC was working perfectly fine until 2 weeks ago...
I have 2 MacBook Pro 2009 & 2012, I used the TC has wireles external hard disk for Time Machine.
I installed Mountain Lion on my oldest MacBook Pro (the newest has already Mountain Lion installed) 2 weeks ago. The installation was not straight forward... I tried to perform a clean installation, but I had difficulties with some applications.. anyway after a few days, everything went fine and smooth, I had to reconnect my TC with but it works fine, I could perform a few back-up with Time Machine.
But ... since 5 days ago, my TC is not find any more when I enter Time Machine... I went to Utility Airport and the TC was not connected, just circeld with dashed line and I cannot enter the set up mode.. I tried several things that did not worked and finally performed a reinitialisation of my TC with restauration of factory setting. This helped a bit because I could finally see my TC in utility arport in the wifi connected devices. I tried to et up my TC and connect it to an existing network. It went fine when specifying on whch network I want to connect, chossing a name for the TC and its password.
But then...  I got an error message: An unexpected error has occured. Retry. I never get the window asking for the password for the network.
I retried but, It did not help, now the airport is no more visible in the wifi connected devices in airport utility...
Any thoughts, ideas?
Thanks,
Yvan

If you have a clean install of Mountain Lion it will remove the 5.6 utility.. but this is still better for setups than the new one. .. certainly for Gen4 TC or earlier.
The setup of the TC manually from v5 utility.
Make sure you use all short names.. for the TC itself and for wireless.. I recommend different name for 5ghz as well.
Use WPA2 Personal security and fix wireless channels.. check 11, 6, 1 in that order.
For 5ghz try around 40 and around 150.. doesn't matter which one.
Use ethernet if wireless fails..
You will hate me but older Mac with ML upgrade that went badly.. sorry get some help to clean install. the wireless in the Mac itself is then the issue.

Usually a simple reboot will work.. Reboot the TC..
If that is not enough.. Restart the whole network from off.
Mountain Lion and to a lesser extent Lion.. have network issues and lose track of the TC.

  • When doing a restore with Time Capsule, I get -8003 error; restoring nothing

    Hi,
When doing a full restore with Time Capsule, I get -8003 error; restoring nothing. This happens with all recent backups. Also after doing a verify/repair of the TimeCapsule disk.
This is a dissaster for my originals (my Ableton Live projects). I am very dissapointed in TC and TM at this moment, because I trusted my backup system in combination with my MBP fully.
    Please help?
    Best regards, Tom

    Hi Pondini,
Sorry for the late response, but the problem was something else and were two separate ones.
Somewhere along the way the TC backup couldn't find backup to the original TC volume, that's why I let TM backup towards my user volume named 'Tom'.
When I wanted to restore the root of my drive when selecting the diskname and 'Restore' in any point in time, this resulted in error -8003 in the activated TimeMachine.
Then I tried to do it via the recovery OS and even via the original OSX DVD. Both not enabling me to select the TC volume named 'Tom'. Then I remembered that I first backed-up onto the original 'TimeCapsule' volume/partition. When I copied the sparsefile to the 'TimeCapsule' partition, I was able to recover the entire disk using the recovery OS.
All my files are backup and I am a happy Mac user once again :-)
    Thanks & Regards, Tom

  • I am trying to connect a 3rd airport express to my network, but am getting "an unexpected error occurred" when trying to connect.  Any ideas how to fix?

I am getting, "an unexpected error occurred" during set up of a 3rd airport express.  Any ideas why or how to correct?

Are you using the IMac in your profile, or are you using the iPhone or iPad to set up the Express?
If you are using the iMac, what operating system is installed on the Mac?

  • 2TB Time Capsule getting "An unexpected error occurred. Try again" error

    Hi,
I have been using 2TB Time Capsule as wireless hotspot and for Time Machine for about one year but all of a sudden it stopped doing backups. When trying to do a backup Time Machine said it couldn't find a disk to make the backup.
Airpot Utility is still able to see my time capsule:
However when trying to configure it using the utility first it spends some time at this point:
And after 2 or 3 minutes I get this error message:
Things I have tried with the same results:
    - Setting my network preferences to change the "Configure IPV6" value on TCP/IP advanced setting to "link-local only" as suggested by a post I read but no luck.
    - Also tried doing a hard reset of the device by pressing the reset button with a pen for 5 seconds until the led blinked fast. But I get the same error when using the Airport Utility.
-I even tried doing a factory-reset by unplugging the Time Capsule from power, pressing the reset button with a pen, plugging back the power and waited until the LED blinked fast. But I got the same error message when trying to configure with the Airpot Utility.
There are a few occasions (about 10% of my tries) where I am able to get one step further: I get to the point where it asks me for a password and for a name for the Time Capsule, however when clicking next it seems that it starts to configure some things and I even get internet access via the Time Capsule, however the Airport Utility shows the same unexpected error message after a few minutes. In this scenario Time Capsule works fine as access point, but it the disk still shows as unavailable for backups. I haven't found what conditions make me be able to get to this single further step. It seems to be related to the hard-reset. But it is confusing because most of the times I do the hard-reset procedure it doesn't allow me getting to the password and name setting step. 90% of the tries get stuck in the previous step.
Any thoughts about how to solve this problem? I am worries about not been able to backup my Mac. By the way, my Mac is a MabBook Pro running Mountain Lion.

There is some bug with the TC disk and Mountain Lion..
Look at Pondini section C .. much of it relates to later OS .. Lion and ML.
Some things are obvious and others are just a mess.
Note C9.. that is important. Use short names.. no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
Try manually mounting the disk.. in Finder.. use Go, Connect to server.. and type in the address,
AFP://TCname or TCIPaddress (replaced with actual name or actual IP). eg at default, AFP://10.0.1.1
Any failure to connect try another factory reset and use ethernet.. and do it in full isolation from the network.. ie just the MBP and the TC with ethernet between them.
What version is the TC.. A1xxx from the base please??
    What firmware revision?
Using v5 utility can sometimes get around things but you cannot use it on Gen5 TC.
You can load v5 utility into ML with a trick.
How to load 5.6 into ML.
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
Leave the package open on the desktop so you can see the file. AirportUtility56.pkg
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. If your Mac refuses to run the software, because it wasn’t downloaded from the Apple store, go to security in preferences and allow other software to work.. this is limitation of trade methinks. You can set back later if you like.
Now drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. in finder, open the new directory, drill down.. applications, utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall version 6 (now 6.3 if you updated) so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. although I have had no problems when doing so.

  • 2TB Time Capsule getting "An unexpected error occurred. Try again" error after a hard reset

    Hi,
I'm working with a brand new 2TB Airport Time Capsule and after I performed a Hard reset as expalined in the forums I'm not able to configure it any more.  I receive "An unexpected error occurred. Try again" from the AirPort Utility.
I'm running Mavericks in my Mac and I'm not sure what else to do.  Any suggestions?

Completely isolate the Mac and the TC from the network.. plug the TC lan port by ethernet to the Mac.
    Factory reset the TC.
Factory reset TC Gen 5 or AE Gen 6
Unplug your AE/TC .. hold in reset and power the TC/AE back on.. without releasing the reset.. wait until status led flashes rapidly.
Make sure in the ethernet settings you have ipv6 set to link local and the dhcp set for ip. It should give you an address of 10.0.1.2
Open the airport utility, using the top menu.. File, Configure Other.
Type in the address, 10.0.1.1 .. no password is required at this stage.
Click ok and the main setup will open.
Set all the names short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
Set the TC to the right mode .. dhcp+nat for router or off (bridge mode) for bridge.
Set wireless to create a wireless network.
No luck then the TC is faulty and needs to be returned.

  • Time Capsule + Mountain Lion + Cable Modem = Unhappy

    Greetings,
I have a frustrating networking issue that I *think* is related to Mountain Lion, but I'm not sure.  Here is the situation.
I have a cable modem connected to my Time Capsule.  It has been connected for more than 1 year with the same configuration and cables, and worked just fine.  I use the Time Capsule to connect my MacBook Air, iMac, a couple of iPhones/iPads, and several other wireless and wired network devices to the internet.
This week, I installed the Mountain Lion upgrade on my two macs.  I was able to download and install the update on both computers, but immediately after that, my Time Capsule and my Cable Modem will not connect to each other.
When I plug my MacBook Air directly into the Cable Modem it works fine.
When I plug the Time Capsule into the modem, it initially lets me connect to the internet for anywhere from few seconds to a minute or two, then I lose the internet.
    Troubleshooting steps I've taken:
Power cycled the cable modem multiple times.
Power cycled the Time Capsule multiple times.
Reset Time Capsule to factory defaults and set it up from scratch as a new Time Capsule
Replaced ethernet cable between the two.
Tried OpenDNS servers instead of my cable provider DNS servers
Tried requesting new DHCP lease on Time Capsule, and it doesn't appear that anything changes.
Disconnected all other devices from the network, just the Time Capsule and the MacBook are connected
I've talked with my cable modem support.  They say everything with the cable modem is fine, it is the Time Capsule that is bad.
I've talked with Apple, and they say the Time Capsule is fine it is the cable modem that is bad.
Neither have been able to fix it!
I'm not 100% sure this is realated to the Mountain Lion upgrade.  Prior to the upgrade, I had noted my internet connection speeds had been erratic over the last couple of weeks.  I can't remember for sure, but think the Time Capsule did get a firmware upgrade a week or two ago.  I can't remember if that was when it started to act up or not.
Any Time Capsule/Network gurus out there who can help?  Have other Mountain Lion updaters had similar problems?

Update: I think I've pinpointed this problem to the Time Capsule.  I've replaced the Time Capsule with my Airport Express, and everything works flawlessly.  So:
Cable Modem -> MacBook Air (via ethernet cable) = Works fine
Cable Modem -> Airport Express -> MacBook Air = Works fine
Cable Modem -> Time Capsule -> MacBook Air = Doesn't work
I've reset the Time Capsule to factory defaults (holding down reset button while plugging in power) = no change
When I first plug the Time Capsule into the Cable Modem, I can get internet for few seconds.  But eventually the "Internet" status light in Airport Utility goes yellow and I can't access the internet at all.
It would be interesting to try a different cable modem with the Time Capsule but I don't have one.
Time to call Apple again I think.

  • My Ical events disappeared how do I restore with time machine/mountain lion?

I recently installed mountain lion.    Today my ICal events disappeared and I can't restore them with time machine.   What happened?   How do I fix it?

Did you try rebuilding the library's database file as follows:  make a temporary, backup copy of your library if you don't already have one (Control-click on the library and select Duplicate from the contextual menu) and  apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Time capsule mountain lion

how do I disconnect all users from time capsule in mountain lion, the option seems to no longer be available
I am encountering can't back up sparse bundle in use.  In previous versions you could go to airport utility and disconnect all users to restart time capsule.
Mountain Lion doesn't seem to have that option anymore

The restart command is on the menu bar under Base Station on mine.
Also you can still use the 'old' 5.6 AirPort Utility available here http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
I'm not sure if it installs directly on 10.8, it works fine on my upgraded lion machine but was installed before the upgrade.
    Hope this helps

  • Failed backup with Time Capsule, how to correct Error 11?

I just recently bought the Time Capsule and started using it with my MacBook. It performed the initial backup just fine, but then about two weeks after, I started getting failed backup messages. I recently checked this discussion forum and tried some of the suggestions with no success. So then I launched Consule (like one of the discussion threads recommended) and typed backupd and copied and pasted what was recorded when I tried to run the backup again. Can anyone help me make sense of what is going on here and what Error: 11 means and how to solve it? Thanks.

  • Trouble with Time Capsule

I had MAC os X tiger. I just upgraded to MAC os X Leopard. I wanted to use Time Machine and the time capsule. I was using a Linksys wireless router.
I could not get the time capsule to link to the existing network so I ran the router straight to Time Capsule and started a different network. I can not keep a solid connection between the MAC and the Time capsule. WHY? how do I fix this?
I also had a sonos system running thru the Linksys router and the Imac and it worked fine...Now I can not get it to work at all? I need help please

Please describe the other networking equipment you have (such as a modem or router, including brand and model) and how you've tried to connect things.
Have you tried to configure the Time Capsule with AirPort Utility?

  • Password trouble with time capsule

    Hello,
i just decided to replace my base station and external had with a new (refurb) time capsule and have run into a little problem.  1st, go ahead a point and laugh if the answer is in front of my face.  Ok, here goes.  I set up everything to replace the old drive and the internet/wireless is fine, but wheni try to configure time capsule, I am prompted for the password for the new one.  During setup, everything just migrated, but the password isn't working.  I checked keychain, did a soft reset, looked at the password in airport utility, and it still is not working.  During the setup I was never prompted to enter a password, to my memory, and in the keychain, the password is the same as what I am entering.
Without ithout starting all over, any suggestions?
    thanks!

Before you try a complete reset, try a "soft" reset.
Simply press the reset button for 1 second and release. If the TC is working correctly, now you have a few minutes of free access to go in and change the base station password and the wireless if needed.
Click the Base Station tab to change the base station password and the Wireless tab to change the wireless password.
If that does not work, then you have to reset back to factory default settings and set up the device again. I would suggest that you use different device names , different wireless network names and different passwords for the new setup.
You can delete the settings in KeyChain Access if you want to try to erase the old passwords.

  • More problems with time capsule on lion

    i have one problem:
time machine icon on the desktop is still there after time machine finishes backups (this happens over 50% of the times a backup is made, so it happens several times for day...)...
Also, lots of complains about time capsule takes 20 times longer for backups than on Snow Leopard....
Please fix this apple, i am backing up things all day now, and that icon stays there most of the times... (have to manually eject).

  • Im having trouble with the new mountain lion upgrade!

I bought the new upgrade and this is whats coming up....The product distribution file could not be verified. It may be damaged or was not signed.

Delete the installer and re download the ML. The installer is corrupted. it happens if you have unstable internet connection or slow connection.
