Trouble with WMV files in Premiere

Hello,
I searched first but didn't find my issue or really old discussions came up.
Basically I recorded some screen captured tutorials with Microsoft Expression.  Since I'm using the free version when I'm done my only option is to export a WMV file.  It won't let me pick MP4 for example.
Anyway I exported fairly lightweight files from Expression, 10,000 kbps, 29,97 fps.  In total I'm only talking about 243 MB of footage.
These files play perfect in Windows Media Player and completely aweful in Premiere Pro CC.  This is on a Dell 7600 Nvidia Maximus setup with Mercury CUDA playback enabled.  It should fly with only one video track playing.  On other projects I've used DSLR 1080p footage with AE linked comps in the timeline with heavy effects and I could still play back in realtime.
I'm currently rendering a proxy file so that I can actually work and see footage play back.  Typically my render times are great but with the WMV files it's terrible.  It's going to take 4.5 hours to render 22 minutes of just video.  No crazy AE comp or anything like that.
So anything I can do to fix this?  i see myself doing more of these in the future and this workflow is horrible and a huge waste of time.  There's gotta be a better option.
Thanks!
Rich

Aweful as in 30fps playback in WMP and 0fps playback in Premiere.  The video will play choppy for the first 1 or 2 seconds then stop updating alltogether.  Only when I stop playback (and after a several second wait) will the video refresh.
Again, plays 100% perfectly in WMP.  Files are small, 50-100 megs each.  Only in Premiere do they not play correctly.
To even work I've had to create proxy videos in another format.  That wouldn't be that big of a deal but the slow playback affects Media Encoder too.  Encoding 250 megs, about 25 minutes of footage in a low bit rate, took about 6 hours.  Normally with another format that would only take a couple of minutes.
Kinda funny / sad.  My video was full frame until I tried uninstalling that update described in the other thread.  Now it's half frame, ha ha.  Now to try and reinstall that update that broke their system in the hopes that it fixes mine.

  • Safari and troubles with wmv files.

I'm using Safari, Quick Time Pro. I've installed Flip4Mac. When opening a file other than wmv Quicktime launches and it works fine. However when opening a wmv file it doesn't open Quicktime or Flip4Mac it open's I-Tunes. I did reset my mime-settings but it didn't work. I-Tunes still opens.
When using Opera it works fine. I can see that the Flip4Mac plugin is correctly installed. Opera also showed me that my standardapplication to open a wmv-file I-Tunes is. The latter is not mentioned to be. Probably I did something wrong, but I can't correct this.
Recently I had VLC installed and I tried to install Windows Media Player for Mac.
Should I reinstall Quick Time and I-Tunes??
Can somebody help me Safari play wmv files correctly?
    Thanks

It's simpler to just reinstall the OS, followed by running Software Update. Reinstalling shouldn't take too long and only replaces the system components and the basic Apple apps, leaving all settings and other files alone.

Im having trouble importing mov files into premiere pro on creative cloud, original problem was no video and only audio when I imported mov file, so I have installed quicktime after reading that may solve the problem, but now an error message reads codec missing or unavailable, any help would be appreciated

MOV is a wrapper... what is inside the wrapper?

  • Encoder Options For *.wmv Files re Premiere Pro CS5.5

    Hi,
I have a collection of *.wmv files that Premiere Pro CS5.5 refuses to open and it always generates an error message so I need to re-encode these *.wmv files into a format that Premiere Pro will import OK. I know that Premiere Pro will open *.wmv files so I think that the ones I have must have some data structures slightly out of normal. The files actually play with VLC and open with Sony Vegas so they are not corrupt.
What I hope to do is to use an encoder that will re-encode the files without any loss of video quality into another format or even into a slightly renamed *.wmv file in the hope that the re-encoded version of the *.wmv file will then be palatable to Premiere Pro.
Would anyone please be able to recommend an encoder that is suitable for my needs? On a final point, as a total novice with video, what aspects on re-encoding would cause loss of video quality or is there no loss of quality when re-encoding? Apologies for such a dumb question but I really am a newbie to all this.
    Rgds

If you can get the files open with Vegas, you could probably export them using Lagarith Lossless Video Codec or Ut Video Codec Suite, both of which are lossless AVI codecs that work nicely with Premiere Pro. PPro needs the 64-bit version, but I don't know enough about Vegas to know if you need 32-bit or 64-bit, so just install both. Note that the files will be much larger, but will not suffer any perceptible quality hit.
I'm not sure of any way to do a WMV rewrap--I'll see what I can find.

  • Audio Speeds Up With WMV Files

I am a college student in a film production class.  Our school computers have Premiere Pro on Macs and I have Premiere Elements on a PC.
For the last couple projects I have been editing in Premiere Elements on my PC and saving them as WMV files, and am using Premiere Pro to convert the files to MOV or MP4 because that is the required format for our assignments.  But I have been having a problem.
When I take the fully exported WMV files from Premiere Elements and put it into Premiere Pro and try to move it to the timeline to edit it says that  the clip doesn't match the sequence's setting.   When I tell it to keep the settings it speeds up only the audio while keeping the video at the same speed.  When I tell it to change the settings it speeds up the audio and also stretches out the video.
I do not know if this is the case for all WMV files, but it has been a problem with the ones that I have edited in Premiere Elements.  The Macs at my school have no problem reading the original WMV files in the full quality I shot them in, it is only when I import them into Premiere Pro that I have the problem.
Any suggestions to how I could fix this problem would be really helpful!
    Thank you!

I'm going to be doing that from now on.  My college is a little bit of a drive, so editing on Premiere Elements saves gas because I was editing at home.  But yeah, thanks for the advice.

  • Troubles with xmp files not loading...

I'm having troubles with xmp files not loading with images but are present in the image folders. does anyone know why this is happening and if there is a way to fix this. Also when trying to load the xmp individually they are grayed out and unable to load. I have tried this on different machines (Macs) and still no luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated in this issue.

    > The information contained in the XMP file is stored in the DNG file so there is no need for a separate file.
Aww, yuck!! That's a real drag...
When editing lots of files (yesterday's shoot produced 8GB) I back everything up to off-line storage and then, after doing all my edits and crops in ACR, I only have to copy over the small XMP files which takes no time at all.
So if I re-edit the DNG with ACR I have to re-copy ALL the files again to the off-line storage.
I used to sometimes even save 2 versions of the xmp files when I needed 2 different crops of the same images, such as doing a wide screen 'cinema' crop for a corporate client's Intranet presentation of their event, as well as more standard crops to be used for their newsletters.
Guess I won't be using DNG any more..
Thanks for the help Kees :-)

I am having trouble playing MFX files in Premiere Pro CC. The audio is out of synch. Is there a way to monitor the audio correctly?
    Many thanks

Chances are the pinnacle is producing .avi files or MPEFG1/2 streams - iTunes may know how to decode the audio but not the video. Download Handbrake and try running the Pinnacle files through it and adding to iTunes - use Universal format unless you have a specific device in mind.
    Keep copies of the originals.
Another option might be to try to install Perian.  Can't remember if the Apple MPEG2 plugin allows MPEG2 to be played in iTunes.

  • Having trouble with wav files and sample rates

Hi ,I am having trouble with wav files and sample rates .I have been sent multiple projects on wav as the main instrumental ; I wish to record in 48.000kHz .Now comes the problem. When I try to change the project to 48k It seems to pitch up the track.I can't have them send the logic/project file as most have outboard synths, different plug ins etc. This particular case the producer has recorded the synth task in 41.000 kHz .My successful outcome would be to be able t create a project file in 48 kHz .And NOT pitch up whne I add the instrumenta wav file .Any help would be gratefully recieved, this is my first post so any mistakes I may have made go easy

You'll have to convert the actual synth audio file file that the producer gave you to 48kHz. You can do this in the audio Bin in Logic.

  • Working with .wmv files on my new Mac

    Hi everyone,
I have some videos that I downloaded onto my older pc that I would like to use in iMovie. Does anyone know how I can edit and/or convert it into a format to use on my mac?
    Thanks,
    Karen

You can use the shareware program ReelBean to convert your .wmv to an mpeg-4 file (I think it does this in the free mode, but if not a license is $15), and then import that iMovie.
To view the .wmv files, you need the freeware Flip4Mac. I suspect you will need the components installed by Flip4Mac for ReelBean to work with wmv files - not sure, but it won't hurt to install it.
    Hope this helps...

  • Is there a way/compressor to work with wmv files?

Im working with wmv files. I have to render the clips to view them - is there a way around this?
My sequence settings are the same aspect as the media files. cheers.

FCP doesn't work with WMV files natively. Shocked you are getting them to work at all. Gotta convert them to MOV files....quicktime.

  • How do I remove the watermark when importing WMV files into Premiere Pro?

There is some metadata that adds a media player watermark to my WMV files when I import them into Premiere Pro. I can play the original WMV videos with out the watermark on VLC, but the watermarks show up when I play them on Realplayer. So I know there is something that reads the watermark into the video file and I want to know if there is a way to turn it off in Premiere. I can convert the wmv with Any Video Converter and there is no watermark, but I'd like to avoid this step if I can.

Unfortunately my client doesn't know how the videos were created. My guess is that they were created using some free screen recorder. Most of the videos are recorded PPTs.
I've checked the microsoft site, but haven't found anything relevant.
    Thanks for the suggestion.

  • Troubles with .m1v Files

    Hi All
I am having trouble working with .m1v files in Adobe Bridge CS3 2.1.1.9.
I exported the .m1v (video only mpeg files) in Adobe Premiere Pro with the Adobe Media Encoder.
But now, when I try to add metadata to these .m1v files by right clicking on one- the right click menu no longer has file info as an option. And further, under the file menu- file info is grayed out when a .m1v file is selected. I also tried selecting the .m1v file and clicking in the IPTC core dialogue box, but when I do this, Bridge gives me an error box that reads: "This property cannot be modified"
    Any Ideas???

It's simpler to just reinstall the OS, followed by running Software Update. Reinstalling shouldn't take too long and only replaces the system components and the basic Apple apps, leaving all settings and other files alone.

    Here is that ANNOUNCEMENT:
ANNOUNCEMENT: Windows Update Causes Half of Display to Be Blacked Out
    Hide Details
MicroSoft has issued an Update for Windows, that is causing problems with Displays. The following is from Talbot McInnis, who tracked down this problem, and offers a fix:
"MS bulliten MS13-057.  Specifically, on XP kb2834904 and on windows 7 kb2803821 is causing a problem
For us, it occurs when decoding WMV9 files.  Not all uses of WMV decoding are affected, but I confirmed that when connecting the WMV decode DLL to a sample grabber for RGB32 video, the frames arrive black on top, so that points directly to decoding internals of the WMV Decode dll.
You can uninstall these windows updates to resolve your problem."
There are several threads on the problem that this Update is causing on the PrE and PrPro Forums, so one can get more details. So far, there is not another fix from either MS, or Adobe.
